Abstract

Purpose

The current body of empirical research regarding the impact of trust in the cybersecurity commitment of institutions on digital payment usage has focused solely on a macro-level analysis, overlooking the intricate dynamics between institutions' cybersecurity commitments and the trust levels of digital payment users. In light of this limitation, this study aims to offer a more comprehensive understanding of this complex relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study was conducted on digital payment users in India through the critical realist lens. To gather data, interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with digital payment users from various regions of the country.

Findings

The citizen-centric outcomes of the national cybersecurity commitment (performance and responsiveness) are the most prominent and impactful trust indicators. These outcomes play a crucial role in shaping digital payment users' perception and trust in the cybersecurity commitment of public institutions. Individuals' value positions also influence trust judgments, as it is essential to recognize the value tensions that may arise due to security implementation and their congruence with citizens' values.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study have significant implications for policymakers. They are potentially an artifact of the security and perception of digital payment users and the cultural uniqueness of digital payment users in India.

Originality/value

The study proposes a holistic understanding of the relationship between institutions' cybersecurity commitments and the trust levels of digital payment users. It offers a qualitative evaluation of how digital payment users perceive and construe efficient information security management implemented by public institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to assess the systemic risk in the new energy stock markets of China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first uses the VaR method to study individual stock market risks. It then introduces the DCC model to capture the dynamic conditional correlation among the new energy stock markets.

Findings

The paper shows a generally upward trend of the stock market risk over time in the recent decade. Among all the markets considered, the solar power market demonstrates the highest risk, closely followed by the wind power market, while the hydropower market exhibits the lowest risk. Furthermore, the average dynamic conditional correlations among the new energy markets stay high during the period under investigation though daily correlations vary and significantly declined in 2020.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first of its kind to study the systemic risk within the new energy stock market context. In addition, it not only investigates individual new energy stock market risks but also examines the dynamic linkages among those markets, thus providing comprehensive and unprecedented evidence of systemic risk in China new energy markets, which have useful implications for both regulators and investors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to attempt to examine some of the unique features of cryptocurrency and the reasons for its growing market acceptability. Given the expanding size of cryptocurrency markets, the present study strives to identify whether it can be used as an alternative financial asset in place of traditional financial assets to meet firms' financial constraints. It also provides issues for future research in the area of cryptocurrency markets.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analysed 94 research papers from databases such as ScienceDirect, Proquest, EBSCO, Emerald Insight and Web of Science. Articles connected to cryptocurrency, financial assets and corporate financial constraints research were explored. VOSviewer software has been used to visualise the specified body of literature and identify eight clusters in previous literature using keyword and abstract analysis.

Findings

Studies reveal that cryptocurrency markets are independent of traditional financial markets and cryptocurrency returns have less correlation with traditional financial asset classes. This can be an advantage to firms, especially during times of crisis when traditional financial assets are impacted by significantly lower returns, while cryptocurrencies can serve as an alternative. Realtime data reveals that during the pandemic, cryptocurrencies had the maximum growth in returns which also happened to be a time when firms faced severe cash constraints. While accepting cryptocurrency as a means of exchange is still under review by regulatory authorities, it can be considered an alternative asset for investment purposes. Firms can take advantage of it to overcome financial constraints and thus reap the gains from holding crypto assets for precautionary reasons.

Originality/value

The present study investigates using cryptocurrency as an alternative financial asset to solve the financial constraint problem in corporates. The issues regarding volatility, cyber securities, gold returns, long-term and short-term returns have been some of the most prominent studies in the area of cryptocurrency. The present study uses eight theme-based clusters to identify the role of cryptocurrency as an alternative investment class and examines evidence-based research regarding the financial returns from holding cryptocurrency over certain traditional asset classes such as gold, currency or stocks. In recent years, it has been found that investors' growing interest in holding cryptocurrency as part of their financial portfolio has led to the substantial appreciation of cryptocurrency prices. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study will be a novel attempt to identify the role of cryptocurrency as an antidote to the companies’ financial constraints and liquidity issues.

Abstract

Purpose

This study seeks to explicate how institutional disruptions impact multinational corporation (MNC) subsidiary control choices. It uses institutional theory to understand the influence of formal and informal institutions across countries on the type of control system employed in an MNC manufacturing subsidiary.

Design/methodology/approach

This study’s sample is based on a unique dataset from five trustworthy sources. We use multi-level models to account for the hierarchical nature of the sample of 1,630 multinational subsidiaries spread across 26 host countries by firms from 21 home countries.

Findings

The institutional distance between the host and the home country has a negative relationship with strategic control. In contrast, the home country’s power distance has a positive relationship with strategic control.

Originality/value

Study findings indicate the need to incorporate formal and informal institutional elements in the control system’s conceptual framing and design. This notion complements existing visualizations of optimizing MNC controls through extant articulations of minimizing governance costs through organizational design choices or strategic needs.

Abstract

Purpose

The advent of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and the requirements imposed on companies still need to be clarified. Companies still strive to understand I4.0 requirements and technological, organizational, operational and management challenges. Current literature on I4.0 underlies the importance of a roadmap with structured steps to achieve the benefits of I4.0, mainly focused on augmenting operational performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a roadmap to implement I4.0 focused on operational management concepts, mainly aiming to augment operational performance and bridge the gap between theory and practice regarding roadmaps focused on the operational management dimension.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper follows a research approach divided into the following stages: a literature review to analyze the I4.0 roadmaps and identify the main components of I4.0; development of the proposed I4.0 roadmap presented; field research to test the roadmap by collecting data from a manufacturing company in the automotive industry; validation of the roadmap through modeling and simulation.

Findings

The authors presented a production line design with real-time control, fast response, shop floor coordination and predictive capacity. The results prove that the proposed I4.0 roadmap augments operation performance in the investigated automotive company. The main results were work in process reduction, lead time reduction, output increase, real-time control, shop floor coordination and fast response.

Originality/value

The main novelty of the proposed roadmap is to move toward I4.0 implementation with a focus on the operational management dimension. The roadmap has an innovative combination of the two approaches – lean manufacturing and factory physics – a straightforward roadmap with only three steps: (1) requirements, (2) real-time control and (3) predictive capacity, a structured definition of the approaches and operational management concepts fundamental in each step.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the evolution of massive open online courses (MOOCs) literature over the past 15 years and identifies its significant developments.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing main path analysis (MPA) on a dataset of 1,613 articles from the Web of Science (WoS) databases, the authors construct the main pathway in MOOC literature through a citation analysis. Pajek software is used to visualize the 34 influential articles identified in the field.

Findings

Three phases emerge in MOOC research: connectivism as a learning theory, facilitating education reform and breaking barriers to MOOCs adoption. Multiple-Global MPA highlights sub-themes including self-regulated learning (SRL), motivation, engagement, dropouts, student performance and the impact of COVID-19.

Research limitations/implications

First, data limitations from the WoS core collection might not cover all research, but using reputable sources enhances data validity. Second, despite careful algorithm selection to enhance accuracy, there remains a limitation inherent in the nature of citations. Such biased citations may result in findings that do not fully align with scholars' perspectives.

Practical implications

The authors' findings contribute to the understanding of MOOCs literature development, enabling educators and researchers to grasp key trends and focus areas in the field. It can inform the design and implementation of MOOCs for more effective educational outcomes.

Originality/value

This study presents novel methodologies and important findings for advancing research and practice in MOOCs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the possible defects and their root causes in a soft-termination multilayered ceramic capacitor (MLCC) when subjected to a thermal reflow process.

Design/methodology/approach

Specimens of the capacitor assembly were subjected to JEDEC level 1 preconditioning (85 °C/85%RH/168 h) with 5× reflow at 270°C peak temperature. Then, they were inspected using a 2 µm scanning electron microscope to investigate the evidence of defects. The reliability test was also numerically simulated and analyzed using the extended finite element method implemented in ABAQUS.

Findings

Excellent agreements were observed between the SEM inspections and the simulation results. The findings showed evidence of discontinuities along the Cu and the Cu-epoxy layers and interfacial delamination crack at the Cu/Cu-epoxy interface. The possible root causes are thermal mismatch between the Cu and Cu-epoxy layers, moisture contamination and weak Cu/Cu-epoxy interface. The maximum crack length observed in the experimentally reflowed capacitor was measured as 75 µm, a 2.59% difference compared to the numerical prediction of 77.2 µm.

Practical implications

This work's contribution is expected to reduce the additional manufacturing cost and lead time in investigating reliability issues in MLCCs.

Originality/value

Despite the significant number of works on the reliability assessment of surface mount capacitors, work on crack growth in soft-termination MLCC is limited. Also, the combined experimental and numerical investigation of reflow-induced reliability issues in soft-termination MLCC is limited. These cited gaps are the novelties of this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The present paper aims to explore if innovation strategies and crowdfunding campaigns can be cross-referred or even matched. These alternatives could increase the efficiency of crowdfunding processes since seeking new projects/business ideas to finance could be more targeted.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is theoretical and explorative. Two dedicated literature reviews are carried out. The former is focused on innovation strategies and the latter is focused on crowdfunding campaigns. The offering of research propositions is the result of an inductive process.

Findings

Two main findings are achieved: first, a possible match between innovation strategies and crowdfunding campaigns (expressed by four research propositions); second, the confirmation of the role of innovation studies to corroborate the relevance of crowdfunding as an attractive field of research.

Originality/value

Previous contributions, expressly concerning the relationship between innovation strategies and crowdfunding campaigns, have mainly focused on the influence/support that crowdfunding campaigns offer to innovation strategies, by supporting or fostering them. Possible matches between innovation strategies and crowdfunding campaigns have rarely been investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

An abundance of techniques has been presented so forth for waste classification but, they deliver inefficient results with low accuracy. Their achievement on various repositories is different and also, there is insufficiency of high-scale databases for training. The purpose of the study is to provide high security.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, optimization-assisted federated learning (FL) is introduced for thermoplastic waste segregation and classification. The deep learning (DL) network trained by Archimedes Henry gas solubility optimization (AHGSO) is used for the classification of plastic and resin types. The deep quantum neural networks (DQNN) is used for first-level classification and the deep max-out network (DMN) is employed for second-level classification. This developed AHGSO is obtained by blending the features of Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) and Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO). The entities included in this approach are nodes and servers. Local training is carried out depending on local data and updations to the server are performed. Then, the model is aggregated at the server. Thereafter, each node downloads the global model and the update training is executed depending on the downloaded global and the local model till it achieves the satisfied condition. Finally, local update and aggregation at the server is altered based on the average method. The Data tag suite (DATS_2022) dataset is used for multilevel thermoplastic waste segregation and classification.

Findings

By using the DQNN in first-level classification the designed optimization-assisted FL has gained an accuracy of 0.930, mean average precision (MAP) of 0.933, false positive rate (FPR) of 0.213, loss function of 0.211, mean square error (MSE) of 0.328 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.572. In the second level classification, by using DMN the accuracy, MAP, FPR, loss function, MSE and RMSE are 0.932, 0.935, 0.093, 0.068, 0.303 and 0.551.

Originality/value

The multilevel thermoplastic waste segregation and classification using the proposed model is accurate and improves the effectiveness of the classification.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to explore the structural attributes of the pharmaceutical industry before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic by examining the relationship between inventory and firm performance and developing a taxonomy of pharmaceutical firms based on the earns-turns matrix.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines the inventory–firm performance linkage, considering both total inventory and its discrete inventory components in pharmaceutical firms. In addition, this research develops a new taxonomy of pharmaceutical firms based on the earns-turns matrix. A large panel dataset of firms in the US pharmaceutical industry was collected for the period 2000–2019.

Findings

The results reveal that strategic groups identified based on this taxonomy show different levels of profitability and inventory turns in the earns-turns matrix. Most pharmaceutical firms moved from the low-right to the top-left section in the earns-turns matrix, indicating that these firms have generally pursued profitability rather than effective inventory management.

Research limitations/implications

This study explores the structural attributes of the pharmaceutical industry using the earns-turns matrix. This two-dimensional analysis may not, however, capture the full complexity of inventory–firm performance dynamics.

Practical implications

The mapping of strategic groups on the earns-turns matrix provides a useful tool for visual representations of the dynamics of strategic groups in terms of financial performance and inventory management performance. Practitioners can use the earns-turns matrix to benchmark their firm's position against their competitors.

Originality/value

This study broadens the scope of operations management research by introducing the earns-turns matrix as an empirical validation tool for operational and strategic management theories. This study emphasizes the effectiveness of the earns-turns matrix in analyzing strategic groups of pharmaceutical firms.
