Abstract

Purpose

This paper represents a hybrid Vision/INS system for tool tracking applications. The proposed system incorporates low cost MEMS sensors and low cost vision type sensors for tracking industrial tools. Vision systems alone have to deal with the problem of “line of sight” and the INS sensor alone will encounter an exponential drift, which render both systems useless for the proposed application.

Design/methodology/approach

The Vision/INS system with the integration of the extended Kalman filter calculates 6D position‐orientation of a tool during its operation within the required accuracy tolerance specific to the application at hand. In this paper, a tool motion modeling approach is proposed to limit the error in an acceptable range for a short period of missing data. The motion of the tool is modeled and updated at any time that the instrument is in the camera view field. This model is applied to the estimation algorithm whenever the camera is not in line of site and the optical data is missing.

Findings

The result of applying motion modeling is shown that the resulted error due to absence of the vision measurement system was bounded and decreased (see the experimental results).

Originality/value

In this paper, the tool motion modeling is proposed to bind the error in the acceptable range for a short period of missing data. Abstract

Purpose

Shaft orbit is an important characteristic for vibration monitoring and diagnosing system of hydroelectric generating set. Because of the low accuracy and poor reliability of traditional methods in identifying the shaft orbit moving direction (MD), the purpose of this paper is to present a novel automatic identification method based on trigonometric function and polygon vector (TFPV).

Design/methodology/approach

First, some points on shaft orbit were selected with inter‐period acquisition method and joined together orderly to form a complex plane polygon. Second, by using the coordinate transformation and rotation theory, TFPV were applied comprehensively to judge the concavity or convexity of the polygon vertices. Finally, the shaft orbit MD is identified.

Findings

The simulation and experiment demonstrate that the method proposed can effectively identify the common shaft orbit MD.

Originality/value

In order to identity the shaft orbit MD effectively, a novel automatic identification method based on TFPV is proposed in this paper. The problem of identifying the shaft orbit MD is transformed into the problem about orientation of complex polygons, which are formed orderly by points on orbit shaft, and TFPV are applied comprehensively to judge the concavity or convexity of the polygon vertices.

Abstract

Purpose

The main objective of this paper is twofold: to analyse the progress of a research stream concerning expatriate academics in the last four decades and to make recommendations for further studies in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the systematic literature review (SLR) concerning expatriate academics was applied. The search embraced the period from 1980–2022. The review was performed in two interdisciplinary electronic databases: Web of Science and Scopus. The selection process of papers was conducted in steps, as recommended by the PRISMA protocol. The total pool of articles received after the exclusion criteria was 110. The content of each paper was thus extracted and categorised in Excel file: author, year of publication, tittle of article, journal, theory applied, research method, sample size, country/field of investigation.

Findings

For almost three decades this topic was almost absent in the literature of the subject. The most active publication period started from 2009 and since then there have been two “waves” of published articles devoted to expatriate academics: 2009–2014 and 2017–2021. The significant number of studies appeared in Journal of Global Mobility followed by Personnel Review, IJHRM, Higher Education. The thematic analysis revealed six themes which have been already researched on expatriates academics: (1) motives, (2) adjustment, (3) job factors and work outcomes, (4) academic missions, (5) academic career, (6) women and men in academia.

Practical implications

Practitioners and university management might find this article useful as the article allows to manage this pool of international academics more efficiently with mutual benefits for expatriates and organisations. This study may assist the university authorities to develop systemic approach to attract foreign academics; adjust the same in work and culture domain through effective training; support in organisational, financial and career field; create the performance criteria of expatriate work related to three missions: research, teaching and service; introduce metrics and indicators to evaluate the contribution and work outcomes of foreign scientists into the host university.

Originality/value

This review shows that there are many new perspectives and models through which the academic expatriation can be analysed. This paper gives an insight into the academic literature on academics expatriates. The paper is innovative and has contributed to research by doing an SLR in a new area (academic expats) and tackling all the areas that has been covered by academic research so far. New research directions have been recommended for future research, to open the field further.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the design and synthesis of a series of novel antibacterial monoazo disperse dyes based on sulfonamide derivatives to combine the dyeing and functional finishing steps on polyester into one process.

Design/methodology/approach

The diazoniom salts of sulfonamides, namely, 4-amino-N-(2-pyrimidinyl) benzenesulfonamide, 4-amino-N-(4-methyl-2-pyrimidinyl) benzenesulfonamide and 4-amino-N-(4,6-dimethyl-2-pyrimidinyl) benzenesulfonamide were prepared and then coupled to N,N-diethyl aniline, N,N-dicyanoethyl aniline and N,N-dihydroxy ethyl aniline, respectively, to produce the dyes.

Findings

The structures of the dyes were characterized using their spectral data (FTIR, 1H-NMR, UV-Vis) and elemental analysis. The results indicated that all the dyes exhibit positive solvatochromism in more polar solvents. Dispersion of the dyes was prepared in water and applied to polyester fabrics. The synthesized dye 3a which had good exhaustion on the fabric (89.98 per cent) and were tinctorially stronger (28899 l/mol.cm) showed higher visual colour yield (16.51). The antibacterial efficacy of the dyes was assessed, and they showed activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria but in different levels depending on their structures.

Research limitations/implications

A simple way to combing functional finishing and dyeing in one process was successfully performed via design and synthesis of disperse dyes with an antibacterial moiety incorporated into dye molecules. The dyes were fully charaterized and evaluated on polyester.

Originality/value

A series of novel antibacterial monoazo disperse dyes based on sulfonamide derivatives were synthesized. The authors studied their application for dyeing of polyester fabric. The dyes offered good results in terms of preparation, yield, purity, visual colour yield, fastness properties and activity against bacteria.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between internet filtering, emotions and information-seeking behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 15 postgraduate students at an Iranian university participated in the study which involved a questionnaire, search tasks with think aloud narratives, and interviews.

Findings

Internet content filtering results in some changes in the information-seeking behaviour of users. Users who face website blocking use a variety of methods to bypass filtering, mostly by using anti-filter software. Filtering encourages users to use channels such as social networking services to share resources and it increases the use of library material by some of the users. Users who face filtering during their search are more likely to visit more pages of results and click on more hits in the results, unlike users who do not experience filtering who rarely go past the first page. Blocking users’ access to content stimulates their curiosity and they become more determined to access the content. In terms of the affective aspect, filtering causes several negative emotions (e.g. anger, disgust, sadness and anxiety) and the main reason for these emotions is not the inability to access information but the feeling of being controlled and not having freedom.

Research limitations/implications

The study was limited to a small number of postgraduate students in social sciences and not generalisable to all user groups. The implication is that in countries where filtering is used, libraries can play an important role in serving users and reducing users negative emotions, especially if libraries can take advantage of technologies such as social media for their services.

Originality/value

This is first study to address the effects of internet filtering on information-seeking behaviour and emotions. The study shows that internet filtering causes negative emotions and results in some changes in information-seeking behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of trisodium nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) on the physical and luminescence emission properties of NaLuF4:Yb, Tm Upconversion (UC) particles and compared with trisodium citrate (CA). Upconversion materials have been remarkably considered in many applications in the past decades. However, the morphology of the UC particles affects their emission properties, depending on the synthesis situation.

Design/methodology/approach

The UC particles were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Properties such as crystal phase, particle morphology, particle size, smoothness and uniformity of particle surface and their emission intensity in the UV–Vis region were studied.

Findings

Observations showed that pH is an essential factor in determining the crystalline phase. In addition, quality factors affect the morphology, particle size and surface smoothness of crystalline facets. It was also found that the UC particles synthesized in the presence of trisodium NTA have a much higher emission intensity than those synthesized in the presence of CA. The use of UC particles in security inks to maintain the brand was also investigated.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, for the first time, the effect of trisodium NTA as a chelating agent was investigated on morphology and UC intensity of NaLuF4:Yb,Tm phosphor.
