Abstract
Purpose
Environmental and emergency leaders are important individuals who play a vital role in managing ecological resources. Based on the resilience thinking of Walker and Salt, this study highlights aims to how resilience for adaptive management can be built by incorporating vision formation of environmental and emergency management leaders.
Design/methodology/approach
The study addresses two research questions: What constitutes environmental and emergency leadership systems? How are the concepts of vulnerability, resilience, and adaptation relevant to the environmental and emergency management processes? The study employs two case studies and discusses how resilience leadership can be incorporated into environmental management and emergency management systems in organizations.
Findings
This study includes a review that consists of activities in resilience‐building, and the process of vision formation. It explains how resilience thinking influences vision. Investigations of the application of the resilience approach by examining two environmental and emergency leadership organizations in Arizona demonstrate how situations can improve with resilience thinking and leadership in emergency and environmental management systems.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the knowledge body of resilience and leadership by calling importance and incorporation of resilience thinking into the management systems of environment and emergency management.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to show how shape analysis and quantitative characterization of fiber cross sections, with the aid of image analysis techniques, provide a quick, powerful approach to automated profiled fiber identification.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, an effective method of cross‐sectional shape characterization for profiled fiber identification is reported with extraction of the distance fluctuation curve of fiber cross‐sectional boundary to the centroid. By calculating their cross‐correlations using signal processing techniques, the authors tackle the problem of calibrating the starting points of fiber objects orientated arbitrarily in image successfully, which are difficult to deal with by means of image processing, to finish the normalization of distance fluctuation curves. For two fiber cross‐sections, the similarity degree of their boundary fluctuation curves normalized can effectively reflect the similarity degree of themselves.
Findings
Based on this, the method presented extracts the curves of all fiber cross‐sections in one sample, compares the similarity degrees between each other, and creates clusters to identify profiled fiber.
Originality/value
Experimental results validate that this curve can effectively characterize profiled fiber cross‐sectional contour for profiled fiber identification and the normalization method is feasible.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive literature survey on dyslexic learners and to propose a model for integrated assistive technology of dyslexic learners.
Design/methodology/approach
The use of the proposed model through real-life scenarios categorized as “phonological, reading and writing scenarios”. We have also surveyed some systems for use with dyslexic learners currently in use and have compared them on the basis of number of barriers, technological innovation, age group and fostering.
Findings
Dyslexic learners are characterized by slow learning, poor handwriting, poor spelling skills and difficulties in planning, organizing, revising and editing texts; technology plays a major role in the educational environment; it has become crucial in impacting knowledge across the globe; and open research issues and challenges that have to be addressed in the design of the current dyslexic system have been presented in detail.
Research limitations/implications
Full implementation of the proposed model and its application in developing countries.
Practical implications
The system improves the phonological awareness, reading and writing skills of dyslexic learners and it provides a solution for children as well as adults with dyslexia.
Social implications
This survey can be used as a reference guide to understand learning barriers and intelligent systems for dyslexic learners and to promote the use of these in schools for those with learning disabilities who need assistive technologies.
Originality/value
Development of a newly proposed integrated intelligent assistive system for dyslexic learners; knowledge generation as a reference guide to understand dyslexic learning ability in general and an intelligent assistive dyslexic system in particular; and survey of open research issues and challenges to further research in intelligent dyslexic systems.

Abstract
Purpose
The modification of the tribological system is an essential aspect of the implementation of resource-saving processes in cold forming. As a result, the focus of this contribution is the influence of the tribological system on the full forward impact extrusion of aluminum alloy EN AW 6082 (T6) with regard to reduction of friction and wear.
Design/methodology/approach
The investigations included a variation of lubricant and die treatment. Friction, wear and the mean arithmetic height Sa were used as evaluation criteria. The aim was to find a suitable die surface treatment and a suitable lubricant on the basis of the evaluation criteria.
Findings
The experiments indicated that each of the selected tribological systems prevents physical metallic contact between tool and workpiece and thus prevents the formation of wear. Nevertheless, differences were found in the areas of smoothing of workpiece surfaces and adhesive strength of lubricants.
Originality/value
As general cause effect relationships between die coating and lubricant are not known in the field of bulk metal forming of aluminum, fundamental investigations are described below. The investigations focus on the influence of the material and the tribological system on friction as well as wear.
