Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the antecedents and consequences of the level of procedural justice climate in new product development (NPD) teams. The aim is to discover answers to the following questions: First, can the procedural justice climate level be used to predict NPD team outcomes such as product performance and product creativity? Second, what NPD team characteristics can be leveraged to improve the justice climate?

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model was developed and tested on the survey data collected from 93 product managers of Turkish companies. The product managers who participated in this study represented various industries, including those of telecommunications, food, material, software, machinery, chemicals, and service technologies.

Findings

Statistical analyses demonstrated that stability, collectivism, and moderate‐level functional diversity of teams were significantly related to the procedural justice climate. In addition, procedural justice climate had significant positive impacts on new product creativity and speed to market. Such impacts were found to be more significant with regard to high‐turbulence conditions.

Originality/value

This paper is the first attempt to explore the role of procedural justice in NPD teams.

Abstract

Purpose

The usage of pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) is becoming increasingly widespread across a variety of industries because of its advantages such as its lightness and its ability to generate a huge amount of force using the fewest components. The purpose of this paper is to develop a piece of hardware to minimize and equally distribute the thermal changes on the surface of a PAM when positioning using PAMs. A classic PAM and a PAM that contains the hardware suggested for tasks, such as the positioning of spoilers decelerating control surfaces for aircrafts, were compared experimentally.

Design/methodology/approach

Rapid thermal changes were detected in the classic PAM, especially at the tip of the PAM. These thermal changes decrease the positioning sensitivity and reliability, thus shortening life span of the PAMs. A component was developed that could create a circulation of air around the tip of the PAM, preventing the temperature increase caused by still air. It is installed inside the PAM and makes it possible to control the pressurized air volume in crucial areas. Shaped as a perforated metal pipe, the component was embedded inside the PAM and effects of this component were investigated.

Findings

The experiment results have shown that, thanks to the system that was developed, cool air that comes from outside is able to reach the tip of the PAM every time, thus keeping regional temperature increase to a minimum. The temperature increase in the pressurized air inlet was minimized by creating a circulation of air in the area.

Originality/value

With this study, the distribution of heat in different areas on PAM was homogenized at a low cost using the component that was developed.

Abstract

Purpose

Seeds and nuts include many dietary minerals as well as trace metals. It is very important to determine the nutritional mineral values in seeds and nuts. Many minerals can be analyzed simultaneously in low concentrations by using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. This paper aims to evaluate nutritional values of dietary and trace minerals in selected seeds and nuts.

Design/methodology/approach

Dietary minerals in the sunflower seed (Helianthus annuus), pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo L.), peanut (Arachis hypogaea) and corn (Zea mays L.) samples collected from the markets in Sakarya city of Turkey have been analyzed. Two digestion procedures were applied by using hydrochloric acid solution and the mixture of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution.

Findings

In the evaluation of the mineral contributions of the nuts, the micro-mineral contributions (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and Se) were found at higher values than the macro-minerals (Ca, Mg, K and Na). Potassium was determined as the most abundant mineral, and sodium was found at lower levels. The results showed that nuts are trace mineral suppliers and possible Na-K regulator foods in human nutrition.

Social/implications

The obtained results for the mineral profile and daily intake values provide useful information that could sensitize the people on the consumption of seeds and nuts.

Originality/value

Findings from the digestion procedures and the assessments based on the recommended daily intakes have got valuable impact.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and compare the protective, anticorrosion behaviors and electrochemically synthesis of poly(2-chloroaniline) (PCANI) and poly(2-chloroaniline-co-aniline) P(CANI-co-ANI) films on thin zinc–iron plated carbon steel (CS).

Design/methodology/approach

Zinc–iron (ZnFe) alloy plating was successfully achieved on CS applying 3 mA constant current value. The PCANI and P(CANI-co-ANI) films on ZnFe-plated CS electrode were synthesized by cyclic voltammetry technique using monomer(s) containing 0.20 M sodium oxalate solution. The CS/ZnFe electrodes with and without PCANI or P(CANI-co-ANI) films were characterized using SEM and anodic linear sweep voltammograms. The anticorrosive behaviors of uncoated and coated electrodes were studied in 3.5 per cent NaCl solution by corrosion techniques which include open circuit potential measurements, the anodic polarization curves and alternative current electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique.

Findings

The protection efficiency values (E per cent) for CS/ZnFe, ZnCS/ZnFe/PCANI and CS/ZnFe/P(CANI-co-ANI) electrodes were calculated as 71.05, 84.53 and 92.79, respectively, after 168 h of immersion time. The results showed that P(CANI-co-ANI) coating on ZnFe-plated CS electrode exhibited higher corrosion resistance and provided better barrier property in comparison with PCANI coating and ZnFe alloy plating, in longer exposure time.

Originality/value

A number of reports on the synthesis and characterization of PANI have appeared in the literature during the past decade, but there is no such publication of PCANI. At the same time, the synthesis of PCANI onto the surface of metal alloy coating being the first of this kind, no such proceedings have been reported in the literature so far.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model for evaluation of the energy alternates in India based on their sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

A fuzzy analytical hierarchy process approach is used for the weight calculation of the criteria and the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution is used for ranking of the energy alternates. Seven energy sources – thermal, gas power, nuclear, solar, wind, biomass and hydro energy are considered for the assessment purpose on the basis of sustainability criteria, namely, economic, technical, social, environmental, political and flexible.

Findings

The result of the analysis shows that economics is the highest weight criterion, followed by environmental and technical criteria. Solar energy was chosen as the most sustainable energy alternate in India, followed by wind and hydro energy.

Research limitations/implications

Few other MCDM techniques such as VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (multi-criteria optimization and compromise solution), weighted sum method and preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluations – II can also be explored for the sustainability ranking of the energy alternates. However, the present model has also provided a good result.

Practical implications

The present research work will help the decision-makers and organizations in the evaluation and prioritizing the various energy sources on the scale of sustainability.

Social implications

Research finding provides guidance to government and decision-makers regarding the development of social conditions through energy security, job creation and economic benefits.

Originality/value

Research work can be act as a supplement for the investors and decision-makers specifically in prioritizing the investment perspective and to support other multi-perspective decision-making problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The modern day has seen an increase in the prevalence of the improvement of high-performance thermal systems for the enhancement of heat transmission. Numerous studies and research projects have been carried out to acquire an understanding of heat transport performance for their functional application to heat conveyance augmentation. The idea of this study is to inspect the entropy production in Darcy-Forchheimer Ree-Eyring nanofluid containing bioconvection flow toward a stretching surface is the topic of discussion in this paper. It is also important to take into account the influence of gravitational forces, double stratification, heat source–sink and thermal radiation. In light of the second rule of thermodynamics, a model of the generation of total entropy is presented.

Design/methodology/approach

Incorporating boundary layer assumptions allows one to derive the governing system of partial differential equations. The dimensional flow model is transformed into a non-dimensional representation by applying the appropriate transformations. To deal with dimensionless flow expressions, the built-in shooting method and the BVP4c code in the Matlab software are used. Graphical analysis is performed on the data to investigate the variation in velocity, temperature, concentration, motile microorganisms, Bejan number and entropy production concerning the involved parameters.

Findings

The authors have analytically assessed the impact of Darcy Forchheimer's flow of nanofluid due to a spinning disc with slip conditions and microorganisms. The modeled equations are reset into the non-dimensional form of ordinary differential equations. Which are further solved through the BVP4c approach. The results are presented in the form of tables and figures for velocity, mass, energy and motile microbe profiles. The key conclusions are: The rate of skin friction incessantly reduces with the variation of the Weissenberg number, porosity parameter and Forchheimer number. The rising values of the Prandtl number reduce the energy transmission rate while accelerating the mass transfer rate. Similarly, the effect of Nb (Brownian motion) enhances the energy and mass transfer rates. The rate of augments with the flourishing values of bioconvection Lewis and Peclet number. The factor of concentration of microorganisms is reported to have a diminishing effect on the profile. The velocity, energy and entropy generation enhance with the rising values of the Weissenberg number.

Originality/value

According to the findings of the study, a slip flow of Ree-Eyring nanofluid was observed in the presence of entropy production and heat sources/sinks. There are features when the implementations of Darcy–Forchheimer come into play. In addition to that, double stratification with chemical reaction characteristics is presented as a new feature. The flow was caused by the stretching sheet. It has been brought to people's attention that although there are some investigations accessible on the flow of Ree-Eyring nanofluid with double stratification, they are not presented. This research draws attention to a previously unexplored topic and demonstrates a successful attempt to construct a model with distinctive characteristics.
