Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the linear solution of equality constrained problems by using the Frontal solution method without explicit assembling.

Design/methodology/approach

Re-written frontal solution method with a priori pivot and front sequence. OpenMP parallelization, nearly linear (in elimination and substitution) up to 40 threads. Constraints enforced at the local assembling stage.

Findings

When compared with both standard sparse solvers and classical frontal implementations, memory requirements and code size are significantly reduced.

Research limitations/implications

Large, non-linear problems with constraints typically make use of the Newton method with Lagrange multipliers. In the context of the solution of problems with large number of constraints, the matrix transformation methods (MTM) are often more cost-effective. The paper presents a complete solution, with topological ordering, for this problem.

Practical implications

A complete software package in Fortran 2003 is described. Examples of clique-based problems are shown with large systems solved in core.

Social implications

More realistic non-linear problems can be solved with this Frontal code at the core of the Newton method.

Originality/value

Use of topological ordering of constraints. A-priori pivot and front sequences. No need for symbolic assembling. Constraints treated at the core of the Frontal solver. Use of OpenMP in the main Frontal loop, now quantified. Availability of Software.

Abstract

Purpose

Following the deregulation of electricity markets in the USA, independent power producers operate as for-profit entities. Their profit depends on the price of electricity and an accurate forecast is critical in making bidding decisions on the electricity and reserve markets or engaging in bilateral contracts. Competing price forecasts have their accuracy expressed in statistical terms but producers need to determine the long-term value of using a given forecast. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue by presenting a method of electricity price forecast valuation which compares forecast models using financial rather than statistical measures.

Design/methodology/approach

The objectives of this paper are achieved by mathematical modeling of thermal power plants and price forecast information available to market participants and simulating the operation of a thermal power plant using various price forecasts and perfect information (as a baseline). The operating profit calculated over a long period was used for ranking forecast models.

Findings

The framework can be used to estimate the value of a new price forecast as well as to determine if potential gains from developing or acquiring a new forecast will justify the expenses. The results show that an improvement in terms of statistical forecast accuracy measures does not guarantee increased profit.

Practical implications

This paper presents a new method for comparing electricity price forecast models. It can be adapted to various types of thermal power plants that operate on liberalized electricity markets and utilize price-based dynamic economic dispatch models.

Originality/value

This paper presents a simulation-based valuation framework for short-term electricity price. The approach described in this paper can be utilized by independent power producers for different types of generators, operating on deregulated electricity markets.

Abstract

Purpose

Modeling of material behavior by physically or microstructure-based models helps in understanding the relationships between its properties and microstructure. However, the majority of the numerical investigations on the prediction of the deformation behavior of AA2024 alloy are limited to the use of phenomenological or empirical constitutive models, which fail to take into account the actual microscopic-level mechanisms (i.e. crystallographic slip) causing plastic deformation. In order to achieve accurate predictions, the microstructure-based constitutive models involving the underlying physical deformation mechanisms are more reliable. Therefore, the aim of this work is to predict the mechanical response of AA2024-T3 alloy subjected to uniaxial tension at different strain rates, using a dislocation density-based crystal plasticity model in conjunction with computational homogenization.

Design/methodology/approach

A dislocation density-based crystal plasticity (CP) model along with computational homogenization is presented here for predicting the mechanical behavior of aluminium alloy AA2024-T3 under uniaxial tension at different strain rates. A representative volume element (RVE) containing 400 grains subjected to periodic boundary conditions has been used for simulations. The effect of mesh discretization on the mechanical response is investigated by considering different meshing resolutions for the RVE. Material parameters of the CP model have been calibrated by fitting the experimental data. Along with the CP model, Johnson–Cook (JC) model is also used for examining the stress-strain behavior of the alloy at various strain rates. Validation of the predictions of CP and JC models is done with the experimental results where the CP model has more accurately captured the deformation behavior of the aluminium alloy.

Findings

The CP model is able to predict the mechanical response of AA2024-T3 alloy over a wide range of strain rates with a single set of material parameters. Furthermore, it is observed that the inhomogeneity in stress-strain fields at the grain level is linked to both the orientation of the grains as well as their interactions with one another. The flow and hardening rule parameters influencing the stress-strain curve and capturing the strain rate dependency are also identified.

Originality/value

Computational homogenization-based CP modeling and simulation of deformation behavior of polycrystalline alloy AA2024-T3 alloy at various strain rates is not available in the literature. Therefore, the present computational homogenization-based CP model can be used for predicting the deformation behavior of AA2024-T3 alloy more accurately at both micro and macro scales, under different strain rates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a simplified but accurate finite element procedure for the analysis of the conjugate conduction-convection heat transfer in cross-flow micro heat exchangers.

Design/methodology/approach

The velocity fields in single microchannels are calculated by solving the parabolised form of the momentum equations and later mapped onto the three-dimensional grid, corresponding to an appropriate portion of the micro heat exchanger, which is used for the solution of the energy equation in its elliptic form. To allow the use of finite elements elongated in the flow direction, layers of perpendicular microchannels can be meshed independently with grids that do not match at the common interface (domain decomposition).

Findings

An original and easy-to-implement method has been developed to deal with non-matching grids. Computed results show that increasing the number of microchannels per layer yields relative pressure drop increments that are larger than those displayed by the relative heat flow rates.

Research limitations/implications

The simplified procedure requires the assumption of constant thermophysical properties. The adopted domain decomposition technique yields non-symmetric system matrices.

Practical implications

The procedure can be very useful in the design of cross-flow micro heat exchangers.

Originality/value

The finite element procedure described in the paper requires only limited computational resources for the analysis of the conjugate conduction-convection heat transfer in cross-flow micro heat exchangers with a large number of microchannels per layer.

Abstract

Purpose

The present paper aims to describe the model updating of a small aircraft dynamic finite element model (FEM) to improve its agreement with ground vibration test (GVT) data.

Design/methodology/approach

An automatic updating method using an optimization procedure is carried out. Instead of using dedicated updating tools, the procedure is implemented using standard MSC/NASTRAN because of wide availability of the software in small aircraft industries. The objective function is defined to minimize the differences in the natural frequency and the differences in the mode shape between the analytical model and the GVT data. Provision has been made to include the quantification of confidence in both the GVT data and in the initial model. Parameter grouping is carried out to reduce the number of design parameters during the optimization process.

Findings

The optimization module of standard finite element (FE) software can be effectively used to reduce the differences between the GVT and the FEM in terms of frequency and mode shape satisfactorily. The strategy to define the objective function based on minimizing the mode shape error can reduce the improvement in the frequency error. The required user interference can be kept low.

Originality/value

The most important contribution of the present paper concerns the combination of strategies to define the objective function and selection of the parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

In former work, test results of cracks in aluminium panels under cyclic shear buckling showed that cracks in the tensile stress field of a buckle propagate. The main influencing factor for the crack growth rate is the maximum principle stress. A simplified approach for crack propagation analyses based on this finding showed limitations for application on larger cracks because it disregarded the increasing out-of-plane deformation for larger cracks as well as stress redistributions. The purpose of this paper is to improve the results of the simplified approach with the help of finite element method (FEM).

Design/methodology/approach

An approach for crack propagation based on FEM is presented taking into account the mutual interaction of cracks and buckling. The finite element (FE) model, which is described in detail, respects the boundary conditions of the test-set-up. Different initial crack positions, loads and panel thicknesses are analyzed. Results of the stress intensity factors KI calculated by the ABAQUS® FE model provide a function which is used to run a crack propagation analysis based on Forman law.

Findings

The results of the FE-based crack propagation solution are in good agreement with test results and improve the prediction of the simplified approach. It is not restricted in terms of panel thickness, crack position or applied shear load.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations of the FE-based crack propagation solution compared to the experimental results are discussed. These are, the sensitivity of crack propagation analyses to initial crack length and deviations of the experimental settings from the ideal FE model.

Originality/value

The interaction of cracks and buckling in aluminium shells is mainly disregarded both in research and industrial work, but can be of interest considering, accidental damages in fuselage side shells. Cracks propagate under shear load as it was shown in former work. The FE modeling of the tests presented in this paper proves the mutual interactions of crack propagation and buckling deformation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an assembly coordination modelling approach based on measured data for assembly quality control of multi-constrained objects in aircraft assembly. This approach aims to establish a high-precision digital mirror of physical assembly system in the virtual environment, with which the assembly process in the virtual environment can be performed synchronously with that in the physical world.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a realistic geometrical representation model based on measured point cloud, as well as the multiple constraints modelling methods for local and global constraints with the proposed representation model. For the assembly target optimization, a novel optimization method based on the evaluation of multi-dimensional tolerance zone is proposed, where the particle swarm optimization and simulated annealing algorithm are combined to calculate the optimal solutions.

Findings

As shown in the validation results, the minimum easiness value for easiness model in global optimization is 3.01, while the best value for weighting model by adjusting weights for more than 10 times is 1.94. The results verify that the proposed coordination modelling approach is effective to the assembly of multi-constrained objects, and the optimization model has an obvious advantage over the traditional weighting method.

Originality/value

This paper provides a new idea for the fine control of assembly quality of non-ideal components by introducing the measured data into the on-line assembly process. Besides, a novel optimization method based on the evaluation of multi-dimensional tolerance zone is proposed, which overcomes the problem of traditional weighting model wherein the weightings are difficult to determine.

Abstract

Purpose

The structural design problem can be viewed as an iterative design loop with each iteration involving two stages for topology and shape designs with genetic algorithm (GA) as the optimization tool for both.

Design/methodology/approach

The topology optimization problem, which is ill posed, is regularized using a constraint on perimeter and solved using GA. The problem is formulated as one of compliance minimization subject to volume constraint for the single loading case. A dual formulation of this has been used for the multiple loading cases resulting in as many behavioral constraints as there are loading cases. The tentative topology given by the topology optimization module is taken and the domain boundary is approximated using straight lines, B‐splines and cubic spline curves and design variables are selected among the boundary defining points. Optimum boundary shape of the problem has been obtained using GA in two different ways: without stress constraints; and with stress constraints.

Findings

The proposed two stage strategy has been tested on benchmark structural optimization problems and its performance is found to be extremely good.

Practical implications

The strategy appears to be eminently suitable for implementation in a general purpose FE software as an add‐on module for structural design optimization.

Originality/value

It has been observed that the integrated topology and shape design method is robust and easy to implement in comparison with other techniques. The computing time requirements for the GA does not appear daunting in the present scenario of high performance parallel computing and improved GA techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

Modeling and analysis of dimensional variation propagation is a crucial support technology for variation reduction, product/process design evaluation and recognition of variation source. However, owing to the multi-deviation (i.e. part deviations and fixture deviations) and multi-interaction (i.e. part-to-part interaction, part-to-fixture interaction and station-to-station interaction) in assembly processes, it is difficult for designers to describe or understand the variation propagation (or accumulation) mechanism clearly. The purpose of this paper is to propose a variation propagation modeling and analysis (VPMA) method based on multiple constraints aiming at a single station.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, part-to-part constraints (PPCs) and part-to-fixture constraints (PFCs) are applied for the multi-interaction of assembly, and multiple constraints graph (MCG) model is proposed for expressing PPCs, PFCs, parts, as well as the variation propagation relation among them. Then, locating points (LPs) are adopted for representing the deviations in constraints, and formulas for calculating the deviations of LPs are derived. On that basis, a linearized relation between LPs’ deviations and part’s locating deviations is derived. Finally, a wing box is presented to validate the proposed method, and the results indicate the methodology’s feasibility.

Findings

MCG is an effective tool for dimensional VPMA, which is shown as an example of this paper.

Originality/value

Functions of geometric constraints in dimensional variation propagation are revealed, and MCG is proposed to formulize dimensional variation propagation.

Abstract

Purpose

In response to the challenge of reduced efficiency or failure of robot motion planning algorithms when faced with end-effector constraints, this study aims to propose a new constraint method to improve the performance of the sampling-based planner.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, a constraint method (TC method) based on the idea of cross-sampling is proposed. This method uses the tangent space in the workspace to approximate the constrained manifold pattern and projects the entire sampling process into the workspace for constraint correction. This method avoids the need for extensive computational work involving multiple iterations of the Jacobi inverse matrix in the configuration space and retains the sampling properties of the sampling-based algorithm.

Findings

Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the planner when using the TC method under the end-effector constraint surpasses that of other methods. Physical experiments further confirm that the TC-Planner does not cause excessive constraint errors that might lead to task failure. Moreover, field tests conducted on robots underscore the effectiveness of the TC-Planner, and its excellent performance, thereby advancing the autonomy of robots in power-line connection tasks.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a new constraint method combined with the rapid-exploring random trees algorithm to generate collision-free trajectories that satisfy the constraints for a high-dimensional robotic system under end-effector constraints. In a series of simulation and experimental tests, the planner using the TC method under end-effector constraints efficiently performs. Tests on a power distribution live-line operation robot also show that the TC method can greatly aid the robot in completing operation tasks with end-effector constraints. This helps robots to perform tasks with complex end-effector constraints such as grinding and welding more efficiently and autonomously.
