Abstract
Purpose
This study presents finite element (FE) and generalized regression neural network (GRNN) approaches for modeling multiple crack growth problems and predicting crack-growth directions under the influence of multiple crack parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
To determine the crack-growth direction in aluminum specimens, multiple crack parameters representing some degree of crack propagation complexity, including crack length, inclination angle, offset and distance, were examined. FE method models were developed for multiple crack growth simulations. To capture the complex relationships among multiple crack-growth variables, GRNN models were developed as nonlinear regression models. Six input variables and one output variable comprising 65 training and 20 test datasets were established.
Findings
The FE model could conveniently simulate the crack-growth directions. However, several multiple crack parameters could affect the simulation accuracy. The GRNN offers a reliable method for modeling the growth of multiple cracks. Using 76% of the total dataset, the NN model attained an R2 value of 0.985.
Research limitations/implications
The models are presented for static multiple crack growth problems. No material anisotropy is observed.
Practical implications
In practical crack-growth analyses, the NN approach provides significant benefits and savings.
Originality/value
The proposed GRNN model is simple to develop and accurate. Its performance was superior to that of other NN models. This model is also suitable for modeling multiple crack growths with arbitrary geometries. The proposed GRNN model demonstrates its prediction capability with a simpler learning process, thus producing efficient multiple crack growth predictions and assessments.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to deal with the study of interaction between multiple cracks in an aluminum alloy under static loading. Self-similar as well as non-self-similar crack growth has been observed which depends on the relative crack positions defined by crack offset distance and crack tip distance. On the basis of experimental observations, the conditions for crack coalescence, crack shielding, crack interaction, crack initiation, etc. are discussed with respect to crack position parameters. Considering crack tip distance, crack offset distance, crack size and crack inclination with loading axis as input parameter and crack initiation direction as output parameter, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed. The model results were then compared with the experimental results. It was observed that the model predicts the crack initiation direction under monotonic loading within a scatter band of ±0.5°.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is based on the experimental observations. Growth studies are made from the growth initiation from two cracks in a rectangular aluminium plate under static loading. The present study is focused on the influence of crack position defined by crack offset distance and crack tip distance on growth direction. In addition to this, ANN has been used to predict crack growth direction in multiple crack geometry under static loading. The predicted results have been compared with the experimental data.
Findings
The influence of the interaction between multiple cracks on crack extension angle greatly depends on the relative position of cracks defined by crack tip distance S, crack offset distance H and crack inclinations with respect to loading direction. The intensity of the crack interaction can be described according to degree of crack extension angle and relative crack position factors. It is also observed that the progress of the outer and inner crack tip direction is different which mainly depends on the relative crack position.
Research limitations/implications
It is limited to static loading only. Under fatigue loading findings may differ.
Practical implications
It is important to investigate the growth behaviour under multiple cracks and also to know the effect of crack statistics on the growth behaviour to estimate the component life. The study also focused on the development of a high quality predictive method.
Originality/value
The results show trends that vary with crack geometry condition and the ANN and empirical solution provides a possible solution to assess crack initiation angle under multiple crack geometry.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this work is to describe the effects of the length of cracks and the patch size on the stress intensity factors in a bonded composite repair structure containing multiple site damage.
Design/methodology/approach
Finite element method was applied to simulate a bonded repair of a cracked aluminum plate with multiple site damage. A two‐dimensional three‐layer technique was utilized to model damage in a typical aluminum plate with collinear twin cracks.
Findings
This research has found that the stress intensity factors of collinear twin cracks can be reduced significantly through bonded composite repair, and their values strongly depend on the relative position of the cracks. Moreover, the composite patch should be 1.5 to two times longer than the crack length and the patch thickness should be 30‐40 percent of the plate thickness for the best repair performance.
Research limitations/implications
Patch debonding can significantly reduce the repair efficiency and should be avoided if possible.
Originality/value
It is seen that, instead of the three‐dimensional finite element model, which is computationally intense, the two‐dimensional three‐layer finite element model has an adequate accuracy to obtain stress intensity factors in a bonded composite repair structure with multiple site damage.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to perform dynamic response analysis of damaged rigid-frame bridges under multiple moving loads using analytical based transfer matrix method (TMM). The effects of crack depth, moving load velocity and damping on the dynamic response of the model are discussed. The dynamic amplifications are investigated for various damage scenarios in addition to displacement time-histories.
Design/methodology/approach
Timoshenko beam theory (TBT) and Rayleigh-Love bar theory (RLBT) are used for bending and axial vibrations, respectively. The cracks are modeled using rotational and extensional springs. The structure is simplified into an equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) system using exact mode shapes to perform forced vibration analysis according to moving load convoy.
Findings
The results are compared to experimental data from literature for different damaged beam under moving load scenarios where a good agreement is observed. The proposed approach is also verified using the results from previous studies for free vibration analysis of cracked frames as well as dynamic response of cracked beams subjected to moving load. The importance of using TBT and RLBT instead of Euler–Bernoulli beam theory (EBT) and classical bar theory (CBT) is revealed. The results show that peak dynamic response at mid-span of the beam is more sensitive to crack length when compared to moving load velocity and damping properties.
Originality/value
The combination of TMM and modal superposition is presented for dynamic response analysis of damaged rigid-frame bridges subjected to moving convoy loading. The effectiveness of transfer matrix formulations for the free vibration analysis of this model shows that proposed approach may be extended to free and forced vibration analysis of more complicated structures such as rigid-frame bridges supported by piles and having multiple cracks.

Abstract
Purpose
Moderately thick circular cylindrical shells are widely used as supporting structures or storage cavities in structural engineering, rock engineering, and aerospace engineering. In practical engineering, shells often work with micro-cracks or defects. The existence of micro-crack damage may result in the disturbance of dynamic behaviours and even induce accidental dynamic disasters. The free vibration frequency and mode are important parameters for the dynamic performance and damage identification analysis. In particular, stiffness weakening of the local damage region leads to significant changes in the vibration mode, which makes it difficult for the mesh generated in the conventional finite element method to capture a high-precision solution of the local oscillation.
Design/methodology/approach
In response to the above problems, this study developed an adaptive finite element method and a crack damage characterisation method for moderately thick circular cylindrical shells. By introducing the inverse power iteration method, error estimation, and mesh subdivision refinement technique for the analysis of finite element eigenvalue problems, an adaptive computation scheme was constructed for the free vibration problem of moderately thick circular cylindrical shells with circumferential crack damage.
Findings
Based on typical numerical examples, the established adaptive finite element solution for the free vibration of moderately thick circular cylindrical shells demonstrated its suitability for solving the high-precision free vibration frequency and mode of cylindrical shell structures. The any order frequency and mode shape of cracked cylindrical shells under the conditions of different ring wave numbers, crack locations, crack depths, and multiple cracks were successfully solved. The influences of the location, depth, and number of cracks on the disturbance of dynamic behaviours were analysed.
Originality/value
This study can be used as a reference for the adaptive finite element solution of free vibration of moderately thick circular cylindrical shells with cracks and lays the foundation for further development of a high-performance computation method suitable for the dynamic disturbance and damage identification analysis of general cracked structures.

Abstract
Purpose
Crack detection of pavement is a critical task in the periodic survey. Efficient, effective and consistent tracking of the road conditions by identifying and locating crack contributes to establishing an appropriate road maintenance and repair strategy from the promptly informed managers but still remaining a significant challenge. This research seeks to propose practical solutions for targeting the automatic crack detection from images with efficient productivity and cost-effectiveness, thereby improving the pavement performance.
Design/methodology/approach
This research applies a novel deep learning method named TransUnet for crack detection, which is structured based on Transformer, combined with convolutional neural networks as encoder by leveraging a global self-attention mechanism to better extract features for enhancing automatic identification. Afterward, the detected cracks are used to quantify morphological features from five indicators, such as length, mean width, maximum width, area and ratio. Those analyses can provide valuable information for engineers to assess the pavement condition with efficient productivity.
Findings
In the training process, the TransUnet is fed by a crack dataset generated by the data augmentation with a resolution of 224 × 224 pixels. Subsequently, a test set containing 80 new images is used for crack detection task based on the best selected TransUnet with a learning rate of 0.01 and a batch size of 1, achieving an accuracy of 0.8927, a precision of 0.8813, a recall of 0.8904, an F1-measure and dice of 0.8813, and a Mean Intersection over Union of 0.8082, respectively. Comparisons with several state-of-the-art methods indicate that the developed approach in this research outperforms with greater efficiency and higher reliability.
Originality/value
The developed approach combines TransUnet with an integrated quantification algorithm for crack detection and quantification, performing excellently in terms of comparisons and evaluation metrics, which can provide solutions with potentially serving as the basis for an automated, cost-effective pavement condition assessment scheme.

Purpose
Periodic inspection and maintenance are essential for effective pavement preservation. Cracks not only affect the appearance of the road and reduce the levelness, but also shorten the life of road. However, traditional road crack detection methods based on manual investigations and image processing are costly, inefficiency and unreliable. The research aims to replace the traditional road crack detection method and further improve the detection effect.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, a crack detection method based on matrix network fusing corner-based detection and segmentation network is proposed to effectively identify cracks. The method combines ResNet 152 with matrix network as the backbone network to achieve feature reuse of the crack. The crack region is identified by corners, and segmentation network is constructed to extract the crack. Finally, parameters such as the length and width of the cracks were calculated from the geometric characteristics of the cracks and the relative errors with the actual values were 4.23 and 6.98% respectively.
Findings
To improve the accuracy of crack detection, the model was optimized with the Adam algorithm and mixed with two publicly available datasets for model training and testing and compared with various methods. The results show that the detection performance of our method is better than many excellent algorithms, and the anti-interference ability is strong.
Originality/value
This paper proposed a new type of road crack detection method. The detection effect is better than a variety of detection algorithms and has strong anti-interference ability, which can completely replace traditional crack detection methods and meet engineering needs.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a numerical investigation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack behavior emanating from a semicircular notch and double semicircular notch and its interaction with another crack which may occur in various positions in (TiB/Ti) functionally graded material (FGM) plate subjected to tensile mechanical load.
Design/methodology/approach
For this purpose the variations of the material properties are applied at the integration points and at the nodes by implementing a subroutine USDFLD in the ABAQUS software. The variation of the J-integral according to the position, the length and the angle of rotation of cracks is demonstrated. The variation of the J-integral according to the position, the length and the angle of rotation of cracks is examined; also the effect of different parameters for double notch FGM plate is investigated as well as the effect of band of FGM within the ceramic plate to reduce J-integral.
Findings
According to the numerical analysis, all parameters above played an important role in determining the J-integral.
Originality/value
The present study consists in investigating the simulation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack behavior emanating from a semicircular notch and double semicircular notch and its interaction with another crack which may occur in various positions in (TiB/Ti) FGM plate under Mode I. The J-integral is determined for various load applied. The cracked plate is joined by bonding an FGM layer to TiB plate on its double side. The determination of the gain on J-integral by using FGM layer is highlighted. The calculation of J-integral of FGM’s involves the direction of the radius of the notch in order to reduce the J-integral.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to employ analytical and numerical techniques to generate modal displacement data of damaged beams containing very small crack-like surface flaws or slots and to use the data in the development of damage detection methodology. The detection method involves the use of double differentiation of the modal data for identification of the flaw location and magnitude.
Design/methodology/approach
The modal displacements of damaged beams are simulated analytically using the Bernoulli-Euler theory and numerically using the finite element method. The principle used in the analytical approach is based on changes in the transverse displacement due to the localized reduction of the flexural rigidity of the beam. Curvature analysis is employed to identify and locate the structural flaws from the modal data. The curvature mode shapes are calculated using a central difference approximation. The effects of random noise on the detectability of the structural flaws are also computed.
Findings
The analytical approach is much more robust in simulating modal displacement data for beams with crack-like surface flaws or slots than the finite element analysis (FEA) approach especially for crack-like surface flaws or slots of very small depths. The structural flaws are detectable in the presence of random noise of up to 5 per cent.
Originality/value
Simulating the effects of small crack-like surface flaws is important because it is essential to develop techniques to detect cracks at an early stage of their development. The FEA approach can only simulate the effects of crack-like surface flaws or slots with depth ratio greater than 10 per cent. On the other hand, the analytical approach using the Bernoulli-Euler theory can simulate the effects of crack-like surface flaws or slots with depth ratio as small as 2 per cent.

Purpose
Most supersonic aircraft were manufactured using 2A70 aluminum alloy. The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion mechanism and fatigue behavior of an aircraft in a semi-industrial atmospheric corrosive environment, alternating effects of corrosion and fatigue were used to simulate the aircraft’s ground parking corrosion and air flight fatigue.
Design/methodology/approach
For this purpose, the aluminum alloy samples were subjected to pre-corrosion and alternating corrosion-fatigue experiments. The failure mechanisms of corrosion and corrosion fatigue were analyzed using microscopic characterization methods of electrochemical testing, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Miner’s linear cumulative damage rule was used to predict the fatigue life of aluminum alloy and to obtain its safe fatigue life.
Findings
The results showed that the corrosion damage caused by the corrosive environment was gradually connected by pitting pits to form denudation pits along grain boundaries. The deep excavation of chloride ions and the presence of intergranular copper-rich phases result in severe intergranular corrosion morphology. During cyclic loading, alternating hardening and softening occurred. The stress concentration caused by surface pitting pits and denudation pits initiated fatigue cracks at intergranular corrosion products. At the same time, the initiation of multiple fatigue crack sources was caused by the corrosion environment and the morphology of the transient fracture zone was also changed, but the crack propagation rate was not basically affected. The polarization curve and impedance analysis results showed that the corrosion rate increases first, decreases and then increases. Fatigue failure behavior was directly related to micro characteristics such as corrosion pits and microcracks.
Originality/value
