Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe main ideas and demonstrate results of the research activities carried out by the authors in the field of design concepts of induction mass heating technology based on multiple-criteria optimization. The main goal of the studies is the application of different optimization methods and numerical finite element method (FEM) codes for field analysis to solve the multi-objective optimization problem that is mathematically formulated in terms of the most important optimization criteria, for example, maximum temperature uniformity, maximum energy efficiency and minimum scale formation.

Design/methodology/approach

Standard genetic algorithm (GA), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) and alternance method of parametric optimization based on the optimal control theory are applied as effective tools for the practice-oriented problems for multiple-criteria optimization of induction heaters’ design based on non-linear coupled electromagnetic and temperature field analysis. Different approaches are used for combining FEM codes for interconnected field analysis and optimization algorithms into the automated optimization procedure.

Findings

Optimization procedures are tested and investigated for two- and three-criteria optimization problems solution on the examples of induction heating of a graphite disk, induction heating of aluminum and steel billets prior to hot forming.

Practical implications

Solved problems are based on the design of practical industrial applications. The developed optimization procedures are planned to be applied to the wide range of real-life problems of the optimal design and control of different electromagnetic devices and systems.

Originality/value

The paper describes main ideas and results of the research activities carried out by the authors during past years in the field of multiple-criteria optimization of induction heaters’ design based on numerical coupled electromagnetic and temperature field analysis. Implementing the automated procedure that combines a numerical FEM code for coupled field analysis with an optimization algorithm and its subsequent application for designing induction heaters makes the proposed approach specific and original. The paper also demonstrates that different optimization strategies used (standard GA, NSGA-II and the alternance method of optimal control theory) are effective for real-life industrial applications for multiple-criteria optimization of induction heaters design.

Abstract

Supply chain is an important aspect for all the companies and can affect many aspects of companies. Especially the disruption in supply chain is causing huge impacts and consequences that are difficult to deal with. This chapter presents a review of selected multiple criteria problems used in supply chain optimization. Research analyzed the multiple criteria decision-making methods to tackle the problem of supplier evaluation and selection. It also focuses on the problem of supply chain when a disruption happens and presents strategies to deal with the issue of disruptions in supply chain and how to mitigate the impact of disruptions. Prevention, response, protection, and recovery strategies are explained. Practical part is focused in the risk-averse models to minimize expected worst-case scenario by single sourcing. Computational experiments for practical examples have been solved using CPLEX solver.

Abstract

This chapter presents the survey of selected linear and mixed integer programming multi-objective portfolio optimization. The definitions of selected percentile risk measures are presented. Some contrasts and similarities of the different types of portfolio formulations are drawn out. The survey of multi-criteria methods devoted to portfolio optimization such as weighting approach, lexicographic approach, and reference point method is also presented. This survey presents the nature of the multi-objective portfolio problems focuses on a compromise between the construction of objectives, constraints, and decision variables in a portfolio and the problem complexity of the implemented mathematical models. There is always a trade-off between computational time and the size of an input data, as well as the type of mathematical programming formulation with linear and/or mixed integer variables.

Abstract

Purpose

The results obtained from previous studies are not found to be sufficient for hydrostatic bearing design optimisation since thermodynamic effects are not considered. Therefore, this research is presented with considering parameter variations based on thermodynamic effects for more efficient optimisation of bearing parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

Single and multi‐criteria approaches were carried out to determine the hydrostatic journal bearing design parameters so that the total performance of the system is optimal.

Findings

It is seen that firstly, the results of single criteria approaches for minimum power, bearing coefficient and minimum temperature rise in circular hydrostatic axial journal bearings are not sufficient, secondly, there is a crucial need to consider multiple criteria optimisation cases and thirdly, thermodynamic effects must be taken into account for more efficient approach to compute the optimum values of bearing design parameters.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is required to develop a genetic algorithm‐based optimisation for bearing design problems considering thermodynamic effects and multiple criteria approaches to compare the results of present study.

Practical implications

Comparison of optimisation results of single and multi‐criteria approaches are given to show temperature variation effects on bearing performance.

Originality/value

Although, there are some works related to design and optimisation of hydrostatic bearings, most of them consider the single criteria optimisation and thermodynamic effects are not usually taken into account. Therefore, this research is different than others since the present approach is implemented with thermodynamic effects and also not limited to single criteria approach.

Abstract

In continuation of the recent development of Evolutionary Structural Optimisation (ESO) applied to the simultaneous objective to maximise the natural frequency and to minimise the mean compliance, presents the Multicriteria ESO optimisation of two new criteria. This has been done with the use of four different multicriteria methods. Three examples have been used to verify the usefulness and capability of these methods applied to ESO in the context of the aforementioned criteria. Concluded that the ESO weighting method is proficient in presenting the designer with a range of options (of Pareto attribute) taking into account multiple criteria, and the global criterion method has the tendency to produce shapes and topologies that resemble that of the weighted 50 per cent: 50 per cent method. Likewise, the logical OR operator method produced designs that corresponded directly to those of 100 per cent stiffness weighted criteria. No clear resemblance could be concluded with the case of the logical AND operator method.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new hybrid approach based on criticality analysis and optimisation to deal with spare parts inventory management in the initial provisioning phase in the mining industry. Spare parts represent a significant part of mining companies' expenditures, so it is important to develop new approaches to reduce the total inventory value of these items.

Design/methodology/approach

This hybrid approach combines qualitative and quantitative methods based on VED (vital, essential and desirable) analysis, analytical hierarchical process (AHP), and e-constraint optimisation method to obtain the spare parts to be stocked. The study was applied to a large mining company. The mineral sector was chosen due to the great importance to the emerging Brazilian economy and the lack of researches in this sector. In addition, the spare parts have a relevant weight on the total inventory cost.

Findings

Present a novel approach combining multi-objective optimisation and multi-criteria evaluation approaches to tackle the inventory decision in spare parts management. This work also defines and classifies relevant criteria for spare parts management in the mineral sector validated by specialists. The proposed approach achieves an average increase of 20.2% in the criticality and 16.6% in the number of items to be stocked compared to the historical data of the surveyed company.

Research limitations/implications

This paper applies the proposed approach to a mining company in Brazil. Future research in other companies or regions should analyse the adequacy of the criticality criteria, hierarchy and weights adopted in this paper.

Practical implications

The proposed approach is useful for mining industries that deal with a large variety of resource constraints as it helps in formulating appropriate spare part strategies to rationalise financial resources at both tactical and strategic levels.

Originality/value

The paper presents a new hybrid method combining the AHP a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach coupled with e-constraint optimisation to deal with spare parts inventory management allowing for a better spare parts inventory analysis in the initial provisioning phase and providing managers with a systematic tool to analyse the trade-off between spare parts criticality and total inventory value.

Purpose

This paper aims to study the shape of the concrete arched bridge by particle swarm optimization algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

Finite element model of open-spandrel concrete arch bridges was constructed using a number of parameters. Design variables of optimization problem include height of skewback abutment, height of arch crown, position of crown with respect to global axes and left and right radius of up and down arches. After parametric modeling of bridge geometry and application of multi-objective particle swarm optimization, the shape optimization of bridge arch was determined. The concrete volume used in bridge substructure construction and maximum principal tensile stress of concrete arch body was adopted as two objective functions in this study. The optimization problem aims to minimize the two objective functions. Geometric and stress constraints are also included in the problem.

Findings

Based on the results presented in the paper, the Pareto front is generated which helps the decision-maker or designer to pick the compromise solution from among 20 optimum designs according to their subjective preferences or engineering judgment, respectively. Moreover, to help the decision-maker, the two multiple objective decision-making methods were used for selection of the best solution from among nondominated solutions.

Originality/value

This research aims to solve an interesting optimization problem in structural engineering. Optimization of arch bridges structure was done for reducing construction costs and increasing safety for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new generic Petri net (PN) model based on assembly plan for assembly sequence optimization. The model aims to allow modeling the flexible assembly system (FAS) configuration, determining the optimal work in process, lead time, throughput, and utilization of each station. Moreover, it aims to show assembly features (AFs) as being useful in assembly sequence planning.

Design/methodology/approach

Sophisticated knowledge of AFs is used to get very few feasible assembly sequences (ASs) rather than all possible ASs for a product. A PN model is developed to find out the near optimal assembly sequence out of the sequences obtained from the AF knowledge. It is also used for design and performance evaluation of FAS. Multiple optimization criteria are used for assembly sequence optimization, keeping in view the line balancing. The PN is optimized using weighted‐WIP when the throughput is bounded by the utilization of the bottleneck machines.

Findings

The results achieved from the example show a considerable reduction in the number of feasible ASs for a product. The PN optimization gives minimum WIP corresponding to the maximum production rate. Moreover, the PN model pushes more inventories to the initial assembly phase.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed PN can be easily extended for inclusion of dual kanban, where the managers may adjust the number of kanban cards as per the requirement.

Practical implications

Managers may use the concept of multiple AFs in order to design and operate robot assembly that will result in more efficient sequence planning. Using the PN model, the assembly manager may design, analyze, evaluate, and even optimize the layout of the FAS for minimum WIP, maximum throughput, and reduced lead time. The determination of total WIP, total number of stations in the assembly line, and the number of servers at each station may be helpful in the factory floor management. Line balancing may result in the highest efficiency and the shortest idling time along with ease of management and supervision.

Originality/value

This paper provides a clear insight into how a large reduction in the number of feasible ASs for a product can be obtained using the knowledge of AFs. It also presents a new PN model used for assembly sequence optimization and design and performance analysis of FAS.

This paper aims to investigate different multi-objective optimization (MOO) approaches for design and control of electromagnetic devices. The main goal of MOO is to find the set of design variables or control parameters which will provide the best possible values of typical conflicting objective functions.

Design/methodology/approach

In the research studies, standard genetic algorithm (GA), non-dominated sorting GA (NSGA-II), migration NSGA algorithm and alternance method of optimal control theory are discussed and compared.

Findings

The test practical problems of multi-criteria optimization of induction heating processes with respect to chosen quality criteria confirm the effectiveness of application of considered MOO approaches both for the problems of design and control.

Originality/value

This paper represents and investigates different MOO approaches for design and control of electrotechnological systems.
