Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide new empirical evidence on the performance of multinational banks as a subset of the eclectic theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs the least square method of random effects model (REM). The opportunity to use a random effects rather than a fixed effects model has been tested with the Hausman test. To control for cross‐section heteroscedasticity of the variables, the study employs White's transformation.

Findings

The empirical findings indicate that credit risk, overhead costs, income from non‐traditional sources, and loans intensity contribute positively to the profitability of the foreign subsidiaries. The results seem to suggest that the parent bank's branch networks exert positive influence on their foreign subsidiaries in India, while the size of the parent banks negatively influences their Indian subsidiaries’ performance.

Research limitations/implications

Due to its limitations, the present study could be extended in a variety of ways. First, future research could include more variables such as taxation and regulation indicators, and exchange rates as well as indicators of the quality of the offered services. Second, future studies could also examine the differences in the determinants of profitability between small and large or high and low profitability banks. Third, in terms of methodology, frontier optimization techniques such as the data envelopment analysis, the stochastic frontier analysis, and/or the Malmquist productivity index methods are recommended to examine the performance of the foreign subsidiaries of multinational banks operating in the Indian banking sector.

Practical implications

Studies on the potential benefit of foreign bank entry have been studied extensively. Still, little is known about in which type of country, and under which circumstances, foreign banks have an advantage over their domestic bank peers. Furthermore, Claessens and van Horen point out that the recent financial crisis has highlighted risks associated with cross‐border banking and foreign banks presence. These developments have led to greater interest among policy makers and academicians for more analyses to help guide regulatory reform.

Originality/value

The empirical works concerning multinational banking have mainly focused on the determinants and methods of multinational banks entry into foreign markets. On the other hand, empirical evidence on the performance of multinational banks as a subset of the eclectic theory is scarce. By using the whole gamut of foreign subsidiaries of multinational banks operating in the Indian banking sector during the period 2000 to 2008, the paper contributes to this line of the literature.

Abstract

This paper provides a primer on European multinational business groups (BGs) and their subsidiaries. Firms in these BGs appear to have higher sales performance than firms in domestic groups (15% higher). This leads us to investigate which elements increase the likelihood that a group will transition towards multinational status. BGs’ characteristics matter for foreign acquisition: groups becoming multinational are usually larger, have a more hierarchical structure with respect to the number of layers in a group, and are more diverse in terms of sectors. Groups tend to expand into bordering countries or countries providing particular advantages, such as a large internal market. The first acquisition is a corporate-level decision that appears to be made by the group’s controlling firm and is often a diversification into a different industry.

Abstract

This chapter examines whether the geographic distance between subsidiaries of multinational banks and their headquarters is an important factor in determining the performance of the subsidiaries. Using various performance indicators of 340 subsidiaries in 54 emerging and developing economies from 69 global banks during the years 1994–2008, we find evidence that first, the distance constraint adversely affects loan growth, profitability, and performance of foreign bank subsidiaries, and second, the unfavorable information asymmetry faced by foreign banks, due to the distance constraint, in financing foreign clients cannot be fully overcome by establishing their presence abroad such as setting up their foreign subsidiaries. We further examine if the effect of distance is symmetric across different banks and countries and find the following various economic, financial, and institutional factors to affect the strength of distance constraints in the multinational banking activities: the entry mode of foreign banks, the history of presence in local markets, the existence of credit information institutions, the cultural similarity between the home and host markets, financial depth, financial crisis periods, the stock market development, the banking market structure in host markets, and the hierarchy of the subsidiary in the multinational banking conglomerate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to approach issues such as what type of value chain activities are carried on by the subsidiaries of multinationals located in Spain, where and how their resources and capabilities are generated and how these are transferred within the multinational. Creating resources and capabilities within a subsidiary of a multinational company enables it to gain competitiveness and therefore greater power of decision within the corporation.

Design/methodology/approach

This research conducts a descriptive analysis of the value chain in Spanish subsidiaries. A population of 1,072 firms has been identified. To gather primary data, a questionnaire was designed based on international value chain and resources and capabilities literature.

Findings

Analysis of the data gathered from 125 subsidiaries has enabled researchers to map out the profile of the value chain in these companies. The results indicate that the principal source of resources and capabilities is the subsidiary itself. Moreover, the experience built up over time is basic to the creation of skills in all the activities in the value chain.

Practical implications

This is a matter of the subsidiaries identifying new opportunities to attain a new position or broaden their existing one.

Social implications

Subsidiaries should benefit from favourable local policies to help them develop and strengthen their capabilities to obtain major international competitiveness.

Originality/value

Although numerous studies assess the country's foreign direct investment flows, works concentrating on the presence of foreign capital in Spain are scarce. The growing interest in the international literature on the subsidiary as a unit of analysis makes this study interesting.

Abstract

This chapter aims to investigate the relationship between levels of subsidiary autonomy and the performance of a subsidiary’s subunit (factory) in Japanese manufacturing subsidiaries in Thailand. We conducted ordinary least squares regression analysis based on a questionnaire survey of 50 Japanese manufacturing subsidiaries in Thailand and multiple case studies to investigate the causal relationship between subsidiary autonomy and factory performance. We have three main findings. First, the autonomy level of Japanese manufacturing subsidiaries is linked to the subsidiaries’ factories’ performance compared to factories in Japan, but not in other foreign countries. Second, high levels of subsidiary autonomy are negatively associated with factory performance. Third, there are two causal relationships: high factory performance leading to low subsidiary autonomy and high/low subsidiary autonomy leading to low/high factory performance. From this, we discussed whether the degree of resource centralization in the home country influences the relationship between the level of subsidiary autonomy and a subunit’s performance in the foreign subsidiary. Moreover, we discussed the possibility that the causal relationships between them are not necessarily direct causal relationships. We identified a new factor determining subsidiary autonomy and investigated the relationship between the subsidiary autonomy and performance of a subunit in the foreign subsidiary compared to the home country. Because this has not been discussed in previous studies, this chapter contributes to the study of headquarters–subsidiary relationships and gives guidelines to practitioners on managing subsidiary autonomy.

Abstract

Purpose

The author contributes to the theory of the multinational enterprise by examining subsidiary-specific capability in financial management, defined as the stock of knowledge and capability to plan, manage, control and direct financial resources effectively and efficiently, and the perceptions of subsidiary managers of host country financial development as drivers of export intensity (the share of sales that are exported) of foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs). The author theorizes that subsidiary-specific capability in financial management is conceptually a valuable subsidiary-specific advantage and it is as important as other traditional competitive advantages, such as research and development and marketing intensity. Perceptions of subsidiary managers of host country financial development are argued to be largely related to the characteristics of the host country-specific advantages.

Design/methodology/approach

The author uses a survey dataset of the foreign subsidiaries of Western multinational enterprises (MNEs) together with other public data sources.

Findings

The author provides empirical evidence to support for these arguments that export intensity of MNE foreign subsidiaries depends on subsidiary-specific advantages and host country specific advantages.

Originality/value

The study broadens the understanding of the relationships between subsidiary-specific advantage in financial management, host country specific advantage, and export intensity of MNE foreign subsidiaries. In this way, the author makes an original contribution to new internalization theory by emphasizing the internal capability building of subsidiaries. The author discusses the implications of the findings for MNE foreign subsidiary managers, and policy makers because exporting is critical to the overall strategy of foreign subsidiaries, and it also contributes to the balance of trade and economic development of host countries where foreign subsidiaries operate.

Purpose – To show the properties of performance measurement and management systems (PMMS) used dialogically and the association between the dialogic use of PMMS and the characteristics of the organizational relationships between parent companies and foreign subsidiaries.

Design/Methodology/Approach – Data were collected through a questionnaire e-mailed to large foreign subsidiaries of multinational firms operating in various industries. Hypotheses regarding factors associated with the extent to which PMMS are used dialogically between parent companies and foreign subsidiaries were tested based on responses to 136 usable questionnaires (45% response rate).

Findings – PMMS are used more dialogically within relationships between parent companies and subsidiaries characterized by subsidiary strategic role and organizational interdependence. Measurement diversity and perceived comprehensiveness of PMMS are higher if PMMS are used more dialogically. Finally, the dialogic use of PMMS is positively associated with subsidiary size and the emphasis on collaboration in the parent company’s national culture.

Originality/Value – In contrast to prior management accounting research that is focused on the outcomes of different styles of use of PMMS, this study shows organizational characteristics and PMMS properties associated with the dialogic use of PMMS. Moreover, this study advances the traditional view of the international business literature that conceives PMMS as bureaucratic systems employed by parent companies to coercively control foreign subsidiaries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a new reference framework which accounts for the motivations of headquarters (HQs) from developed countries and the roles of their subsidiaries established in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiple case studies approach was used for this research. The data were collected using a directed interview with 20 participants in eight foreign subsidiaries established in Tunisia.

Findings

The results show that the studies of subsidiaries can be classified into “workshop” subsidiaries and “market” subsidiaries according to the level of their added‐value activities, the scope of the market served and the level of their decision‐making autonomy. Furthermore, the development trajectory of these subsidiaries takes the form of two consecutive phases. In the first phase, the subsidiaries begin acquiring new competencies which allow them to integrate value‐creating activities that are far beyond intensive labor or low‐technology activities. Subsidiaries in the second phase intervene more and more in strategic decisions related to their growth. While the “workshop subsidiaries” in this study are still in the first phase, the “market subsidiaries” have succeeded in broadening their regional responsibilities within the multinational.

Research limitations/implications

This research had a number of limitations; the most important is the explanatory and qualitative method used in this paper. In addition, this research solely focused on foreign subsidiaries that are still in business. It also would be interesting to investigate the subsidiaries that are stalled or shrank. The perspective of the HQs and the Western institutional players would be also relevant to explore.

Originality/value

Despite the abundance of works on subsidiaries' role, there has been very little research that looks explicitly at the role of foreign subsidiaries in developing countries. This research expands the existing literature and provides evidence on the motivation of multinational companies as well as the role of their subsidiaries in developing countries. This study helps us rethink the redistribution of decision‐making power between the HQs and the subsidiaries established in the developing countries.
