Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a new airport gate assignment method to effectively improve the comprehensive operation capacity and efficiency of hub airport. Gate assignment is one of the most important tasks for airport ground operations, which assigns appropriate airport gates with high efficiency reasonable arrangement.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of airport gates and flights, an efficient multi-objective optimization model of airport gate assignment based on the objectives of the most balanced idle time, the shortest walking distances of passengers and the least number of flights at apron is constructed. Then an improved ant colony optimization (ICQACO) algorithm based on the ant colony collaborative strategy and pheromone update strategy is designed to solve the constructed model to fast realize the gate assignment and obtain a rational and effective gate assignment result for all flights in the different period.

Findings

In the designed ICQACO algorithm, the ant colony collaborative strategy is used to avoid the rapid convergence to the local optimal solution, and the pheromone update strategy is used to quickly increase the pheromone amount, eliminate the interference of the poor path and greatly accelerate the convergence speed.

Practical implications

The actual flight data from Guangzhou Baiyun airport of China is selected to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the constructed multi-objective optimization model and the designed ICQACO algorithm. The experimental results show that the designed ICQACO algorithm can increase the pheromone amount, accelerate the convergence speed and avoid to fall into the local optimal solution. The constructed multi-objective optimization model can effectively improve the comprehensive operation capacity and efficiency. This study is a very meaningful work for airport gate assignment.

Originality/value

An efficient multi-objective optimization model for hub airport gate assignment problem is proposed in this paper. An improved ant colony optimization algorithm based on ant colony collaborative strategy and the pheromone update strategy is deeply studied to speed up the convergence and avoid to fall into the local optimal solution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate deterministic strategies for low-cost multi-objective design optimization of compact microwave structures, specifically, impedance matching transformers. The considered methods involve surrogate modeling techniques and variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) simulations. In contrary to majority of conventional approaches, they do not rely on population-based metaheuristics, which permit lowering the design cost and improve reliability.

Design/methodology/approach

There are two algorithmic frameworks presented, both fully deterministic. The first algorithm involves creating a path covering the Pareto front and arranged as a sequence of patches relocated in the course of optimization. Response correction techniques are used to find the Pareto front representation at the high-fidelity EM simulation level. The second algorithm exploits Pareto front exploration where subsequent Pareto-optimal designs are obtained by moving along the front by means of solving appropriately defined local constrained optimization problems. Numerical case studies are provided demonstrating feasibility of solving real-world problems involving expensive EM-simulation models of impedance transformer structures.

Findings

It is possible, by means of combining surrogate modeling techniques and constrained local optimization, to identify the set of alternative designs representing Pareto-optimal solutions, in a realistic time frame corresponding to a few dozen of high-fidelity EM simulations of the respective structures. Multi-objective optimization for the considered class of structures can be realized using deterministic approaches without defaulting to evolutionary methods.

Research limitations/implications

The present study can be considered a step toward further studies on expedited optimization of computationally expensive simulation models for miniaturized microwave components.

Originality/value

The proposed algorithmic solutions proved useful for expedited multi-objective design optimization of miniaturized microwave structures. The problem is extremely challenging when using conventional methods, in particular evolutionary algorithms. To the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to investigate deterministic surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization of compact components at the EM-simulation level.

Abstract

This chapter presents the survey of selected linear and mixed integer programming multi-objective portfolio optimization. The definitions of selected percentile risk measures are presented. Some contrasts and similarities of the different types of portfolio formulations are drawn out. The survey of multi-criteria methods devoted to portfolio optimization such as weighting approach, lexicographic approach, and reference point method is also presented. This survey presents the nature of the multi-objective portfolio problems focuses on a compromise between the construction of objectives, constraints, and decision variables in a portfolio and the problem complexity of the implemented mathematical models. There is always a trade-off between computational time and the size of an input data, as well as the type of mathematical programming formulation with linear and/or mixed integer variables.

Abstract

Purpose

Strategies for accelerated multi-objective optimization of compact microwave and RF structures are investigated, including the possibility of exploiting surrogate modeling techniques for electromagnetic (EM)-driven design speedup for such components. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Two algorithmic frameworks are described that are based on fast response surface approximation models, structure decomposition, and Pareto front refinement. Numerical case studies are provided demonstrating feasibility of solving real-world problems involving multi-objective optimization of miniaturized microwave passives and expensive EM-simulation models of such structures.

Findings

It is possible, through appropriate combination of the surrogate modeling techniques and response correction methods, to identify the set of alternative designs representing the best possible trade-offs between conflicting design objectives in a realistic time frame corresponding to a few dozen of high-fidelity EM simulations of the respective structures.

Research limitations/implications

The present study sets a direction for further studied on expedited optimization of computationally expensive simulation models for miniaturized microwave components.

Originality/value

The proposed algorithmic framework proved useful for fast design of microwave structures, which is extremely challenging when using conventional methods. To the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization of compact components at the EM-simulation level.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to realize a multi‐objective location‐routing network optimization in reverse logistics using particle swarm optimization based on grey relational analysis with entropy weight.

Design/methodology/approach

Real world network design problems are often characterized by multi‐objective in reverse logistics. This has recently been considered as an additional objective for facility location problem or vehicle routing problem in reverse logistics network design. Both of them are shown to be NP‐hard. Hence, location‐routing problem (LRP) with multi‐objective is more complicated integrated problem, and it is NP‐hard too. Due to the fact that NP‐hard model cannot be solved directly, grey relational analysis and entropy weight were added to particle swarm optimization to decision among the objectives. Then, a mathematics model about multi‐objective LRP of reverse logistics has been constructed, and a proposed hybrid particle swarm optimization with grey relational analysis and entropy weight has been developed to resolve it. An example is also computed in the last part of the paper.

Findings

The results are convincing: not only that particle swarm optimization and grey relational analysis can be used to resolve multi‐objective location‐routing model, but also that entropy and grey relational analysis can be combined to decide weights of objectives.

Practical implications

The method exposed in the paper can be used to deal with multi‐objective LRP in reverse logistics, and multi‐objective network optimization result could be helpful for logistics efficiency and practicability.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in realising both a constructed multi‐objective model about location‐routing of reverse logistics and a multi‐objective solution algorithm about particle swarm optimization and future stage by using one of the newest developed theories: grey relational analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use a data-driven approach towards optimizing construction operations. To this extent, it presents a machine learning (ML)-aided optimization approach, wherein the construction cost is predicted as a function of time, resources and environmental impact, which is further used as a surrogate model for cost optimization.

Design/methodology/approach

Taking a dataset from literature, the paper has applied various ML algorithms, namely, simple and regularized linear regression, random forest, gradient boosted trees, neural network and Gaussian process regression (GPR) to predict the construction cost as a function of time, resources and environmental impact. Further, the trained models were used to optimize the construction cost applying single-objective (with and without constraints) and multi-objective optimizations, employing Bayesian optimization, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm.

Findings

The results presented in the paper demonstrate that the ensemble methods, such as gradient boosted trees, exhibit the best performance for construction cost prediction. Further, it shows that multi-objective optimization can be used to develop a Pareto front for two competing variables, such as cost and environmental impact, which directly allows a practitioner to make a rational decision.

Research limitations/implications

Note that the sequential nature of events which dictates the scheduling is not considered in the present work. This aspect could be incorporated in the future to develop a robust scheme that can optimize the scheduling dynamically.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates that a ML approach coupled with optimization could enable the development of an efficient and economic strategy to plan the construction operations.

Abstract

Purpose

The adverse interactions between disruptions can increase the supply chain's vulnerability. Accordingly, establishing supply chain resilience to deal with disruptions and employing business continuity planning to preserve risk management achievements is of considerable importance. The aforementioned idea is discussed in this study.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes a multi-objective optimization model for employing business continuity management and organizational resilience in a supply chain for responding to multiple interrelated disruptions. The improved augmented e-constraint and the scenario-based robust optimization methods are adopted for multi-objective programming and dealing with uncertainty, respectively. A case study of the automotive battery manufacturing industry is also considered to ensure real-world conformity of the model.

Findings

The results indicate that interactions between disruptions remarkably increase the supply chain's vulnerability. Choosing a higher fortification level for the supply chain and foreign suppliers reduces disruption impacts on resources and improves the supply chain's resilience and business continuity. Facilities dispersion, fortification of facilities, lateral transshipment, order deferral policy, dynamic capacity planning and direct transportation of products to markets are the most efficient resilience strategies in the under-study industry.

Originality/value

Applying resource allocation planning and portfolio selection to adopt preventive and reactive resilience strategies simultaneously to manage multiple interrelated disruptions in a real-world automotive battery manufacturing industry, maintaining the long-term achievements of supply chain resilience using business continuity management and dynamic capacity planning are the main contributions of the presented paper.

Abstract

Purpose

Developing an optimized project schedule that considers all decision criteria represents a challenge for project managers. The purpose of this paper is to provide a multi-objectives overall optimization model for project scheduling considering time, cost, resources, and cash flow. This development aims to overcome the limitations of optimizing each objective at once resulting of non-overall optimized schedule.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a multi-objectives overall optimization model for project scheduling is developed using particle swarm optimization with a new evolutionary strategy based on the compromise solution of the Pareto-front. This model optimizes the most important decisions that affect a given project including: time, cost, resources, and cash flow. The study assumes each activity has different execution methods accompanied by different time, cost, cost distribution pattern, and multiple resource utilization schemes.

Findings

Applying the developed model to schedule a real-life case study project proves that the proposed model is valid in modeling real-life construction projects and gives important results for schedulers and project managers. The proposed model is expected to help construction managers and decision makers in successfully completing the project on time and reduced budget by utilizing the available information and resources.

Originality/value

The paper presented a novel model that has four main characteristics: it produces an optimized schedule considering time, cost, resources, and cash flow simultaneously; it incorporates a powerful particle swarm optimization technique to search for the optimum schedule; it applies multi-objectives optimization rather than single-objective and it uses a unique Pareto-compromise solution to drive the fitness calculations of the evolutionary process.

Purpose

The optimization of investment portfolios is a topic of major importance in financial decision making, with many relevant models available in the relevant literature. The purpose of this paper is to perform a thorough comparative assessment of different bi-objective models as well as multi-objective one, in terms of the performance and robustness of the whole set of Pareto optimal portfolios.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, three bi-objective models are considered (mean-variance (MV), mean absolute deviation, conditional value-at-risk (CVaR)), as well as a multi-objective model. An extensive comparison is performed using data from the Standard and Poor’s 500 index, over the period 2005–2016, through a rolling-window testing scheme. The results are analyzed using novel performance indicators representing the deviations between historical (estimated) efficient frontiers, actual out-of-sample efficient frontiers and realized out-of-sample portfolio results.

Findings

The obtained results indicate that the well-known MV model provides quite robust results compared to other bi-objective optimization models. On the other hand, the CVaR model appears to be the least robust model. The multi-objective approach offers results which are well balanced and quite competitive against simpler bi-objective models, in terms of out-of-sample performance.

Originality/value

This is the first comparative study of portfolio optimization models that examines the performance of the whole set of efficient portfolios, proposing analytical ways to assess their stability and robustness over time. Moreover, an extensive out-of-sample testing of a multi-objective portfolio optimization model is performed, through a rolling-window scheme, in contrast static results in prior works. The insights derived from the obtained results could be used to design improved and more robust portfolio optimization models, focusing on a multi-objective setting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a low evaluation budget optimization strategy for expensive simulation models, such as 3D finite element models.

Design/methodology/approach

A 3D finite element electromagnetic model and a thermal model are developed and coupled in order to simulate the linear induction motor (LIM) to be conceived. Using the 3D finite element coupling model as a simulation model, a multi‐objective optimization with a progressive improvement of a surrogate model is proposed. The proposed surrogate model is progressively improved using an infill set selection strategy which is well‐suited for the parallel evaluation of the 3D finite element coupling model on an eight‐core machine, with a maximum of four models running in parallel.

Findings

The proposed strategy allows for a significant gain of optimization time. The 3D Pareto front composed of the finite element model evaluation results is obtained, which provides the designer with a set of optimal trade‐off solutions for him/her to make the final decision for the engineering design.

Originality/value

An infill set selection strategy is proposed, which allows the parallel evaluation of the finite element model, and at the same time guides the progressive construction of an improved surrogate model during the multi‐objective optimization run. The paper may stand as a good reference for researchers/engineering designers who have to deal with optimal design problems implying costly simulation models.
