Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the current study is to measure the dynamic relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and firm performance in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) economies.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study applies dynamic panel system generalized method of moments estimator to investigate the dynamic relationship between IC and firm performance of 6,045 publically listed firms in BRICS economies for the period of 2005-2014.

Findings

The results revealed that IC efficiency is significantly associated with return on assets and return on equity. Furthermore, human, structural and physical capitals have a positive and significant impact on firm performance. The results, while endorsing resource-based, resource-dependency and learning organization theories, emphasize the importance of IC for firm performance.

Practical implications

The current study does not only provides new direction for future research to analyze dynamic nature of IC and firm performance relationship but also emphasizes the importance of intangibles because of their contribution toward value added. The current study does provide cross-country comparison of top five emerging economies which is useful for the policy makers to evaluate investments in intangibles.

Originality/value

The current study is the first study to use dynamic ordinary least square (OLS) and Wooldridge strict exogeneity test to test the dynamic nature of the relationship between IC and firm performance. Moreover, unlike previous studies which ignore South Africa, this study covers all BRICS economies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the effect of design quality (i.e. appearance, navigation, information and interactivity) on cognitive and affective involvement leading to continued intention to use the online learning application.

Design/methodology/approach

We assume that design quality potentially contributes to enhance the individual's involvement and excitement. An experimental prototype is developed for collecting data used to verify and validate the proposed research model and hypotheses. A partial-least-squares approach is used to analyze the data collected from the participants (n = 662).

Findings

Communication, aesthetic and information quality revealed to be strong determinants of both cognitive and affective involvement. However, font quality and user control positively influence cognitive involvement, while navigation quality and responsiveness were observed as significant indicators of affective involvement. Lastly, cognitive and affective involvement equally contribute to determining the continued intention to use.

Research limitations/implications

This study will draw the attention of designers and practitioners towards the perception of users for providing appropriate and engaging learning resources.

Originality/value

Prevalent research in the online context is focused primarily on cognitive and utilization behavior. However, these works overlook the implication of design quality on cognitive and affective involvement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative strategy for the approximate solution of the heat flow problems in two- and three-dimensional spaces. This new strategy is very easy to implement and handles the restrictive variable that may ruin the physical nature of the problem.

Design/methodology/approach

This study combines Sawi transform (ST) and the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to formulate the idea of Sawi homotopy perturbation transform method (SHPTM). First, this study implements ST to handle the recurrence relation and then incorporates HPM to derive the series solutions of this recurrence relation. ST has the advantage in that it does not require any assumptions or hypothesis for the evaluation of series solutions.

Findings

This strategy finds the results very accurate and close to the precise solution. The graphical observations and the surface solution demonstrate that SHPTM is a reliable and powerful scheme for finding the approximate solution of heat flow problems.

Originality/value

The study presents an original work. This study develops SHPTM for the approximate solution of two- and three-dimensional heat flow problems. The obtained results and graphical representation demonstrate that SHPTM is a very authentic and reliable approach.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to purpose the idea of a new hybrid approach to examine the approximate solution of the fourth-order partial differential equations (PDEs) with time fractional derivative that governs the behaviour of a vibrating beam. The authors have also demonstrated the physical representations of the problem in different fractional order.

Design/methodology/approach

Mohand transform is a new technique that the authors use to reduce the order of fractional problems, and then the homotopy perturbation method can be used to handle the further series solution in the form of convergence. The formulation of Mohand transform and the homotopy perturbation method is known as Mohand homotopy perturbation transform (MHPT). The fractional order in this paper is considered in the Caputo sense.

Findings

The results are formulated in the shape of iterative series and predict the solution close to the exact solution. This successive iteration demonstrates the authenticity and reliability of this scheme.

Research limitations/implications

This paper presents the significance of MHPT such that, firstly, Mohand transform is coupled with homotopy perturbation method and, secondly, the fractional order a is used to show the physical behaviour of the graphical solution.

Practical implications

This study presents the consistency and authenticity of the graphical solution with the exact solutions.

Social implications

This study demonstrates that Mohand transform is capable to handle the fractional order problem without any constraints and assumptions.

Originality/value

A new integral transform has been introduced without any restriction of variables that produces the results in a series form and confirms the validity of the proposed algorithm by graphical illustrations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to suggest the solution of time-fractional Fornberg–Whitham and time-fractional Fokker–Planck equations by using a novel approach.

Design/methodology/approach

First, some basic properties of fractional derivatives are defined to construct a novel approach. Second, modified Laplace homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is constructed which yields to a direct approach. Third, two numerical examples are presented to show the accuracy of this derived method and graphically results showed that this method is very effective. Finally, convergence of HPM is proved strictly with detail.

Findings

It is not necessary to consider any type of assumptions and hypothesis for the development of this approach. Thus, the suggested method becomes very simple and a better approach for the solution of time-fractional differential equations.

Originality/value

Although many analytical methods for the solution of fractional partial differential equations are presented in the literature. This novel approach demonstrates that the proposed approach can be applied directly without any kind of assumptions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to suggest the approximate solution of time fractional heat-like and wave-like (TFH-L and W-L) equations with variable coefficients. The proposed scheme shows that the results are very close to the exact solution.

Design/methodology/approach

First with the help of some basic properties of fractional derivatives, a scheme that has the capability to solve fractional partial differential equations is constructed. Then, TFH-L and W-L equations with variable coefficients are solved by this scheme, which yields results very close to the exact solution. The derived results demonstrate that this scheme is very effective. Finally, the convergence of this method is discussed.

Findings

A traditional method is combined with the Laplace transform to construct this scheme. To decompose the nonlinear terms, this paper introduces the homotopy perturbation method with He’s polynomials and thus the solution is provided in the form of a series that converges to the exact solution very quickly.

Originality/value

The proposed approach is original and very effective because this approach is, to the authors’ knowledge, used for the first time very successfully to tackle the fractional partial differential equations, which are of great interest.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to synthesize the corporate social responsibility decoupling (CSRD) literature, CSRD's causes and consequences and discuss other organizational attributes examined by CSRD scholars during 2010 and 2020. The authors provide suggestions for a future research agenda in this domain.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors' systematic literature review (SLR) uses the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework to extract CSRD studies. The authors filter collected articles against quality and relevancy criteria and finally review 175 published articles.

Findings

A theme analysis identifies and structures the many themes related to CSRD. The authors discuss the drivers of CSRD and reveal the consequences companies face after CSRD. The authors also provide a comprehensive CSRD discussion in the context of developed and developing economies. CSR communication is also identified as a tool for decoupling and recoupling.

Research limitations/implications

The identified themes provide a thorough illustration of CSRD literature for new CSRD scholars. The authors also provide suggestions for future research, such as examining country-level policy-making and implications of CSRD variance and identifying cultural and economic hurdles to achieving core CSR purposes.

Practical implications

Policymakers and scholars may adopt the approach that CSRD is a misreporting of information similar to accounting fraud. This is particularly relevant given that an increasing number of CSRD scandals indicate that the purpose of bringing change through corporate CSR has not been adopted well by corporations.

Originality/value

The authors' study offers a comprehensive literature review for the period of 2010–2020. The studies identified are structured into meaningful themes which can provide groundwork for future researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the relationship between sustainability reporting and firm performance in New Zealand, encompassing the materiality concept of sustainability reporting based on the newly available sustainability reporting standards of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). This set of disclosure items published in 2018 is likely to impact on investors’ decision-making and firm performance, as stipulated by the SASB.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 84 New Zealand companies during the period 2017–2019 and an ordinary least squares statistical approach, this research examines whether firms disclosing sustainability reporting and financially material sustainability information have better performance than the ones non-disclosing.

Findings

Consistent with the legitimacy and stakeholder theories, a positive relationship between sustainability reporting and performance is observed. This positive association is stronger when the sustainability disclosure is financially material information as defined by the SASB.

Originality/value

The outcome of this study provides evidence of the financial incentives for firms to initiate sustainability reporting, especially including financially material sustainability information as guided by the SASB. It also supports the rationale of the SASB for developing new standards that can be globally applicable, influencing investors’ decisions and firm’s financial performance. The results also have implications for the management of New Zealand firms in considering the disclosure of material sustainability information which is linked to firm performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Corona viruses have spiked structure and enveloped glycoproteins in their structure, along with specific proteins in membranes. The mode of action of COVID-19 consists of three phases, i.e. viral replication, immune hyperactivity and pulmonary destruction. However, angiotensin-converting enzyme is an essential receptor that causes COVID-19. After infecting any individual, COVID-19 develops in specific pattern with the following stages: replication stage and adaptive immunity stage. After adaptive immunity stage, the clinical symptoms of patient include cough, fever, runny nose, shortness of breath and many more. To cope with this COVID-19, food and nutrition played an important role. The purpose of this review article is to emphasize the significance of food and immunity to reduce COVID-19 attack among susceptibles.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present era, corona virus, a member of crown-shaped type, created a pandemic situation around the globe owing to its capability to move from human to animals and vice versa. This virus can transfer its 35% infection to the individuals. Contemporarily, this outbreak was observed in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and affected a huge number of communities by spreading like common flu. However, after investigation, it was revealed that COVID-19 is different from common flu regarding respiratory illness created by this novel coronavirus along with its taxonomy.

Findings

Over and above to all the aforementioned food safety concerns, it is suggested to use sufficient supply of green leafy vegetables along with fiber-rich foods such as legumes, beans, whole grains and vegetables. It is further good for health to get all these varieties whole and organic. The individuals should use probiotics (lactobacillus) on daily basis as a source of diary probiotic that can further bind to the virus directly and then can inhibit the viral attachment with body cells; also the probiotics are claimed to enhance the immune system of the body.

Research limitations/implications

In the case of fruits and vegetables purchased, it must be thoroughly washed with water and then disinfected; after pat drying, these fruits and vegetables can be moved to the refrigerator and stored along with other foods. During the outbreak of COVID-19, the partially cooked or ready-to-eat foods should be avoided, especially eggs, meat, meat products, milk and milk-related products. On the other side, nuts should not be consumed; if required, then it must be properly roasted at home before consumption.

Practical implications

The baked product right after coming out of oven is completely safe; however, these are contaminated during handling such as crumb in case of bread and with knives; so in the breakout of any viral attack, the individuals should avoid slicing of the bread. Moreover, it is recommended to place the baked products in personal bags instead of bulk quantity. Before the consumption, the baked products should be toasted, microwaved or heated with the help of pan (traditional) to reduce the amount of viral load.

Social implications

Dietary supplements are taken by most of the people on daily basis or sporadically especially when they are suffering from inflammation or cold. They have options while selecting these types of supplements such as probiotics, Echinacea, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and E, calcium glucosamine, garlic and iron. These supplements are beneficial for the group of population who do not eat diversity of food as sufficient amount of essential nutrients is provided through this pathway.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the approximate solution of the time fractional time-fractional Newell–Whitehead–Segel (TFNWS) model that reflects the appearance of the stripe patterns in two-dimensional systems. The significant results of plot distribution show that the proposed approach is highly authentic and reliable for the fractional-order models.

Design/methodology/approach

The Laplace transform residual power series method (ℒT-RPSM) is the combination of Laplace transform (ℒT) and residual power series method (RPSM). The ℒT is examined to minimize the order of fractional order, whereas the RPSM handles the series solution in the form of convergence. The graphical results of the fractional models are represented through the fractional order α.

Findings

The derived results are obtained in a successive series and yield the results toward the exact solution. These successive series confirm the consistency and accuracy of ℒT-RPSM. This study also compares the exact solutions with the graphical solutions to show the performance and authenticity of the visual solutions. The proposed scheme does not require the restriction of variables and produces the numerical results in terms of a series. This strategy is capable to handle the nonlinear terms very easily for the TFNWS model.

Originality/value

This paper presents the original work. This study reveals that ℒT can perform the solution of fractional-order models without any restriction of variables.
