Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the potential application of mudharabah (silent partnership) as an investment instrument through an Islamic crowdfunding platform.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a qualitative study in which semi-structured interviews were carried out with several experts regarding the application of mudharabah in Islamic crowdfunding. To achieve the purpose of this study, the data is analysed based on thematic analysis.

Findings

The findings reveal that even though Islamic crowdfunding could be an efficient platform through financial technology (Fintech), mudharabah is not an entirely ideal instrument, particularly for equity-based Islamic crowdfunding because of its high risk. These include fraudulent projects, insufficient regulations to protect investors’ money and the structure of mudharabah itself in which it is in the form of profit-sharing contract. However, the risk can be mitigated by using Fintech as a way to closely monitor the project, enhancing regulatory aspects to protect investment funds, enhancing mudharabah practice and creating awareness among all involving parties in terms of mudharabah philosophy.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited because it focuses on the current practice of Islamic crowdfunding in Malaysia, given that it is still a new industry. Currently, there is only one Islamic registered equity crowdfunding platform. Also, as the number of interviewees in this study is limited because of purposive sampling, the findings may be considered the result of an exploratory study.

Practical implications

An equity Islamic crowdfunding platform based on mudharabah can be proposed, particularly to support micro enterprises in which they involve small capital. Also, this model can be considered for less risky ventures such as investment in food industries or technology sectors.

Social implications

Mudharabah Islamic crowdfunding model could potentially support local businesses, especially for start-ups. By channelling money among society, it is not only creating a wealth circulation among society, which is one of the Sharīʿah objectives in finance, but it also promotes mutual cooperation and kindness among society members.

Originality/value

While Islamic crowdfunding is not a new topic in research, it lacks empirical studies, particularly qualitative analysis. As this study engages with experts in Sharīʿah and crowdfunding regarding the potential application of mudharabah, it highlights a fresh discussion both in theory and practice.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the applicability of mudharabah (partnership) based crowdfunding as an alternative fund to support the book publishing industry, particularly for self-publishers and small publishers.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an exploratory qualitative study whereby the data are obtained from library research and empirical studies. As for empirical data, it is sourced from semi-structured interviews with three types of groups: the book industry, the crowdfunding platform and Shari’ah experts.

Findings

The study found that mudharabah crowdfunding could overcome the book publishing industry’s financial problems. However, this requires special requirements for applicants (writers or publishers) to avoid fraudulent cases, as well as committed management in running the platform and a substantial crowd of loyal funders to maintain the platform. Simultaneously, even though mudharabah is a risky instrument, the risk can be mitigated by closely monitoring the progress of the project. As a result, this study proposes a special framework for mudharabah based crowdfunding to fund self-publishers and small publishers in Malaysia.

Research limitations/implications

This is an exploratory study, in which its findings may not be generalised due to the limited number of participants.

Practical implications

A special model for mudharabah based crowdfunding can be established through an online platform to support book publishing in Malaysia.

Social implications

As this mudharabah crowdfunding model has the potential to support the book industry financially, it could also nurture talented young writers while also preserving knowledge.

Originality/value

This study highlights a fresh and in-depth discussion both in theory and practice in proposing a special Islamic crowdfunding framework based on mudharabah as an alternative fund for the book industry, particularly to support self- and small publishers.

Abstract

We empirically investigate the determinants of sukuk issuance type in Indonesia to issue either ijarah sukuk or mudharabah sukuk. We include sukuk characteristics, sharia-related factors, and firm characteristics, provide empirical evidence on the determinants of sukuk issuance type by incorporating sukuk-specific factors, firm-specific factors, and sharia compliance variables, and address the role of Sharia Supervisory Board, as the sharia representative of firm compliance for sharia products, in the issuer’s choice of sukuk type. By studying 88 sukuk issuance in Indonesia from 2009 to 2017, we find that firm profitability and the sharia compliance level have a significant effect on the probability of issuing mudharabah sukuk. Some other factors’ characteristics including sukuk yield, firm age, and inflation rate are also found to have a significant effect.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the role of corporate governance in moderating the effects of murabahah, mudharabah and musyarakah financing on the financing risk and financial performance of Islamic banks.

Design/methodology/approach

The population for this study covered Islamic banks in Indonesia. Purposive sampling was performed, and statistical analysis was conducted using moderating regression analysis by selecting among the common, fixed and random effects models.

Findings

The results showed that murabahah financing has a positive effect on financing risk; conversely, mudharabah financing has a negative effect on financing risk. By contrast, musyarakah financing has no effect on financing risk. However, corporate governance weakens the influence of murabahah financing on financing risk and increases that of mudharabah financing on financing risk. Further, corporate governance cannot weaken the effect of musyarakah financing on financing risk. Additionally, financing risk reduces financial performance.

Research limitations/implications

This research focusses only on Indonesian Islamic banks; future research should be extended to Islamic insurance and Islamic micro finance.

Practical implications

The results serve as input for government regulations on corporate governance in Islamic bank financing and encourage Islamic banks to diversify their financing proportionally.

Social implications

This research can be used for optimising Islamic bank financing to empower the realty sector and reduce poverty.

Originality/value

Research on the role of corporate governance as a moderating variable in reducing financing risk in Islamic banks remains limited.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an insight of Islamic securitization based on sukuk structures.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive, analytical, and comparative analyses are used to discuss the risk‐sharing behaviour in Islamic securitization through different structures of mudharabah and musharakah sukuk derived from asset securitization.

Findings

The paper reveals that although sukuk are structured in a similar way to conventional asset‐backed securities, they can have significantly different underlying structures, provisions and shariah‐compliant. In particular, it prohibits the receipt and payment of interest and stipulates that income must be derived from an underlying real business risk rather than as a guaranteed return from interest. With regards to sukuk securitization, an asset is one of the vital elements that should exist as an evidence to support the process and make it permissible in Islam. In terms of Islamic securitization mechanism, it can be divided into two principles, namely, debt based and partnership. This paper further emphasizes that sukuk structures based on partnership principle is regarded as risk sharing rather than risk shifting, where it works by combining risk‐exposures in such a way that they offset one another to some degree. Accordingly, overall risk will be less than total risks on individual basis.

Practical implications

This paper has important implication for the understanding of risk management practices particularly in structuring sukuk. Banks as originators and special purpose vehicles (SPV) as issuers, might consider more sukuk on partnership principles since it directed towards risk‐sharing concept that could lead to increase mobilization of savings and investment. As for the investors or sukuk holders, the partnership principle could generate the wealth creation, which to be shared between both investors (fund providers) and issuers (fund users), while both bear the risks involved and the resulting loss.

Originality/value

The paper will fill the gap in the existing literature of Islamic finance by showing that Islamic securitization via sukuk is a viable source of funds that could help stabilize the securities market, and as solution to the current subprime mortgages financial crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to compare the return on Mudhārabah deposits (ROMD) to the return on equity (ROE) in Islamic banks.

Design/methodology/approach

The summary statistics of the ROMD and the ROE is used to make a comparison between them with a sample of nine Islamic banks, from seven countries, over the last five years. Regression analysis is also undertaken to unveil the variables affecting the behaviour of ROMD and ROE at Kuwait Finance House.

Findings

The results show that the ROE tend to be at least two times higher than the ROMD. In most of the investigated cases the ROMD are more correlated to the corresponding conventional interest rate than to ROE. The regression analysis suggests that the return on assets affects more significantly the ROE than the ROMD.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper resides in the size of the sample and in the design and the findings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the development of return forecasting model for mudharabah time deposit product in Islamic bank based on artificial neural networks (ANNs).

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis consists of two main elements. First element is the identification and selection of significant macroeconomic variables that determine return volatility of mudharabah time deposit in Indonesian Islamic bank industry. Second element is the implementation of appropriate ANNs model according to neural networks properties, and model evaluation based on simulated return predictions of mudharabah time deposit product in Bank Syariah Mandiri (RR‐BSM).

Findings

It is shown that monthly changes of return can be predicted quite well. The model provides a satisfactory result in forecasting RR‐BSM for 12 months ahead with 95.22 per cent accuracy. These results suggest that the ANNs can be applied as an adequate tool to help depositors in predicting future return of mudharabah time deposit product.

Originality/value

There is believed to be no other empirical study of Islamic banks that exclusively examines the utilization of ANNs to forecast time deposit return as well as return from other investment instruments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find out whether profit‐and‐loss‐sharing (PLS) modes of finance have become viable financial alternatives for entrepreneurship and enterprise development or whether they are still merely an academic endeavour.

Design/methodology/approach

The method employed in this study is a combination of extensive examination of existing literature and critical analysis of the outcomes of several relevant studies in order to establish the convergent/divergent relationship between theory and practice in Islamic finance.

Findings

Based on available bank level and country level data, the paper presents evidence that the divergence between the theoretical perspective and the practical implementation of PLS modes of finance is widening to an alarming level. The paper argues that this divergence by no means can be attributed to the construct and the disposition of the PLS instruments; it is rather the product of the negative attitude and the lack of proper infrastructure of the majority of Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) – and their (reluctance) to accommodate entrepreneurship through the genuine implementation of PLS instruments.

Practical implications

The findings of this study draw attention to the visible shortage in practical research pertaining to the application of the principles of PLS modes in financing entrepreneurial activities. The study suggests that the relevance, the direction and the resilience of future research undertakings should be focused on bridging the increasing gap between the prescribed role of PLS instruments and the actual performance of IFIs in promoting socio‐economic development through the creation of a vibrant entrepreneurship sector.

Originality/value

The paper points out that while PLS models dominate the theoretical literature on Islamic finance, and whereas the majority of mainstream Muslim scholars and financial authorities overwhelmingly judge PLS models as being compelling financial options and practical developmental tools, the reality of Islamic finance paints a different picture. The paper emphasizes the need for IFIs to conform to their own charters and assume a leading developmental role in order to realize al‐Shariah objectives (maqasid al Shariah). The paper identifies key research areas that warrant the attention of keen researchers with interest in the field of Islamic finance and entrepreneurship development.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze marketability constructed from market share and concentration and to test its effect on the profitability and the mediation effects of profit‒loss sharing under stewardship theory.

Design/methodology/approach

This research employs data of financial statements published by ten sharia commercial banks listed in the Indonesia Financial Services Authority during the period 2011–2016. The data are analyzed into path analysis model using multiple mediators.

Findings

The result reveals that sharia banks’ marketability in Indonesia tends to be low. Based on the test of significance through Partial Least Square, it is found that marketability has a positive effect on the level of profitability, indicating that market share and concentration of sharia banks positively lead the change on the level of Return on Asset and Return on Equity. This paper further identifies the mediation effects emerged through mudharabah and musharakah. The results point out that mudharabah has a partial effect and musharakah has a competitive effect on the relationship between market share and profitability.

Practical implications

This paper can be a decision-maker for Central Bank and Financial Services Authority for encouraging sharia banks to enhance the power market through the mode of finances with profit‒loss sharing.

Originality/value

The growth of sharia banks is currently becoming highlight of the literature of sharia banks. This paper provides insights into stewardship theory that sharia banking management provides the concept of the alignment of interest.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss Islamic laws which are relevant to finance. More specifically, it covers the types of contracts as foundation for the distinctive Islamic financial products. The current institutional framework of financial institutions seems to be incompatible with the nature of these Islamic contracts.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a conceptual paper describing the link between finance and economic growth in the present of Islamic contracts, which have various types from contract of partnership, buy‐sale contract, to contract of usufructs. The nature of Islamic contract is to avoid riba (i.e. interest system), because it is unjust and prohibited, meanwhile under conventional system they rely very much on the interest system.

Findings

The conclusion of the paper is that the distinctive character of Islamic contracts applied by Islamic banking and finance relies mostly on the profit and loss sharing mechanism which contains the cooperative spirit, in the contracts such as mudharabah (profit‐sharing), musharakah (partnership). The development of equity partnership instruments in the financial system necessitates a different set of regulation and institutions in order to achieve Islamic goal through economic/financial activities.

Research limitations/implications

This paper opines that the current framework of financial institutions does not match with the nature of Islamic contracts.

Practical implications

This paper suggests that a new framework for financial institutions is necessary in order to accomplish the maqasid‐al‐shariah, by implementing the true spirit of cooperative through various Islamic contracts. Consequently, the rules and regulations and other relevant elements also need to adjust.

Originality/value

The paper indicates a possible different consequence on the link between finance and growth in the presence of Islamic contracts, i.e. a more positive relation.
