Abstract

Purpose

One of the crucial steps in the molded bra production is the process of developing the mold head. The purpose of this paper is to determine the final cups style and size. Compared with traditional development process of the mold head, less time-consuming and a more quantitative method is needed for the design and modification of the mold head.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model for the simulation of large compressive deformation was built in this paper to research the foam bra cup molding process. Since the head cones have more representative than the mold heads, the male and female head cones were used in the simulation. All of the solid shapes are modeled by using 3D Solid 164 elements as well as an automatic surface-to-surface contact between head cones.

Findings

Simulation of the foam cup molding process is conducted by inputting different properties of the foam material and stress-strain curves under different molding temperatures.

Research limitations/implications

In order to simulate the laminated foam moulding process, heat transfer through a layered textile assembly can be studied by using the thermo-mechanical coupled FE model.

Practical implications

According to the different foam performance parameters under different temperatures along with different head cone shapes, distribution and variation in the stress field can be obtained as well as the ultimate capacity of foam materials.

Social implications

A computer-aided parametric design system for the mold heads provides an effective solution to improving the development process of mold heads.

Originality/value

The distribution and variation in the stress fields can be analyzed through simulation, providing a reference for the mold head design.

Reviews the inherent advantages, i.e. design flexibility and processing, of manufacturing piezoelectric ceramics and composites with numerous architectures via rapid prototyping techniques. Reports on processing in which piezoelectric ceramics and composites with novel and conventional designs were fabricated using rapid prototyping techniques. Fused deposition of ceramics, fused deposition modeling, and Sanders prototyping techniques were used to fabricate lead‐zirconate‐titanate ceramics and ceramic/polymer composites via, first, direct fabrication and, second, indirect fabrication using either lost mold or soft tooling techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the work is development a novel of hydro-vibration technology for the formation of hats from fabrics, which will expand the functionalities of application of various fabrics.

Design/methodology/approach

The work is based on a novel technology of forming hats from different fabrics with the use of liquid-active working environment (LAWE). This hydro-vibration technology is characterized by high efficiency, productivity, manufacturability and potential opportunities when compared to existing technologies. This allows expanding its range of applications and increase functionality.

Findings

In the article, hydro-vibration technology is developed for the formation of hats from fabrics. As a result of the experiment, regression dependences of the shape stability coefficient on the formation factors having a close correlation were obtained. The performed optimization allowed determining the optimal values of technological parameters of the vibroforming process from fabrics: LAWE pressure 0.26 MPa, vibration frequency LAWE 4.3 Hz, forming time 74 s.

Practical implications

The use of developed hydro-vibration technology has great practical significance in the textile industry. This technology increases labor productivity and reduces the cost of production of hats due to its high efficiency. Increased efficiency is provided by the use of special equipment, methods and optimal parameters of the hats formation. With sufficient refinement, the developed technology can be applied to other technological processes.

Originality/value

Originality of the work is using liquid-actin working environment at vibroforming of heads of headdresses from fabrics. It is determined that the use of LAWE is effective in the formation of hats. To ensure maximum plasticization of textile fibers in the fabric of the part and increase the force field, it is developed a novel hydro-vibration technology of forming the heads of hats from fabrics.

Abstract

A simplified approach for estimating weld lines, vent locations and fill times for resin transfer molding applications in non‐planar geometry is presented. The molding parts are treated as polyhedral spaces for which the concept of Voronoi diagram and shortest paths is utilized to predict the formation of weld lines, location of vents and filling times. The approach is based purely on geometrical considerations and on previously established observations that it is possible to treat the resin flow inside the mold as partly radial and partly channel‐like. The proposed procedure is geared towards software implementation, but it enables one to gain more insight into the process before detailed and time‐consuming calculations are attempted.

The brief announcement that the Government had accepted that there should be regulations on open date marking of food, to come into effect in 1975, will come as no surprise. It is a timely reminder of what public pressure can achieve these days; how sustained advocacy and publicity by interested sectors of society—magistrates, local authorities, public health workers, consumer groups—can secure legislative changes which, in this case, run counter to trade opinions and the recommendation originally made by the Food Standards Committee that such a proposal was not practical and the existing law was an adequate protection. This was stated in the FSC Report on Food Labelling of 1964, although there was no indication of the evidence reviewed or that the subject had been considered very deeply; it was, after all, only a small fraction of the problem of food labelling control. It was also stated in this Report that in certain cases, date‐stamping of food could give to purchasers a false sense of security, “not justified by the conditions under which the food has been kept since manufacture”.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the mechanical model of typical shear tests, this study aims to propose the test principle and method of freshwater/seawater ice adhesion shear strength of carbon ceramic brake pads for amphibious aircraft, designs and builds the test equipment, prepares the freshwater/seawater ice samples and completes the tests.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines the influence of the icing process, mechanism, temperature and freshwater/seawater on ice adhesion shear strength of carbon ceramic brake pads and puts forward a test method for the freshwater/seawater ice adhesion shear strength of amphibious aircraft brake pads.

Findings

The obtained results examine the influence of the icing process, mechanism, temperature and freshwater/seawater on ice adhesion shear strength of carbon ceramic brake pads. The adhesion shear strength of frozen freshwater and of the seawater of Dalian, Qingdao, Fuzhou and Zhuhai on the surface of aircraft brake pads is measured at –10 to –50°C. It is found that the shear strength of freshwater increases first and then decreases with the decrease of temperature. The adhesion shear strength of seawater; however, increases mainly linear with the decrease of temperature.

Originality/value

The value of this paper is that the test method proposed and test results for the freshwater/seawater ice adhesion shear strength of amphibious aircraft brake pads provide technical support for the anti-icing design of amphibious aircraft brake devices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper provides a general review of automated processing methods currently being used to fabricate aircraft composite structure.

Design/methodology/approach

Presents a description of the Automated Tape Layer (ATL) process and the Fiber Placement (FP) process. These processes are the most “automated” of all processes being used to fabricate composite aircraft structure. Fiber Placement machines and Automated Tape Layers are composites machine tools and they are the closest comparison the composites industry has to metals machining equipment.

Findings

There is a need for more variety of composites automation and more affordable machines in the aerospace composites industry. The limited variety of automation and the cost of equipment tend to limit the spread of automation throughout the aerospace composites industry. ATL and FP are composites laminating technologies that could be adapted to a wide range of machine sizes, configurations, and price ranges.

Originality/value

More widespread use of automated processes in composites would tend to lower the cost of composite aircraft structure on a global basis.
