Abstract

The paper examines the level of information technology (IT) application in university libraries in Iran. As a background, an attempt was made to present current status of IT application in the libraries. In this study the whole population of 79 university libraries under the jurisdiction of two ministries: Culture and Higher Education (MCHE) and Health, Treatment and Medical Education (HTME), was surveyed. The significant difference between the level of IT application in two library groups, i.e. MCHE and HTME, and the relationship between the level of IT application and the number of computers in use and the annual expenditure on IT, have also been discussed. The paper concluded that the automation of Iranian university libraries is a continuous exercise.

2008

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of students' need for cognition (NFC) on their information seeking behavior (ISB).

Design/methodology/approach

Out of 19,965 students enrolled in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, during the academic year of 2010-2011, 364 students were selected as the study sample. They were asked to complete the “need for cognition scale” and the “information seeking behavior questionnaire”.

Findings

Students' NFC affected their ISB. The students' ISB was significantly different based on their NFC levels. It has been concluded that NFC is an important cognitive factor in directing ISB.

Originality/value

This study makes a contribution toward enriching knowledge on psychological traits embedded in information seeking behavior. Such studies are beneficial to library and information science researchers as well as librarians and system designers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relative effectiveness of title keywords and assigned subject descriptors in representing the content of theses in various subject areas indexed in the Iranian Dissertations Database.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted by the content analysis research method.

Findings

This research made a number of useful insights, such as a pattern of significant differences among the average number of keywords in the title in different subject areas. It also showed that 67 percent of the assigned descriptors are derived from the title keywords and that the relative recall for searches by title keywords is 44 per cent, while the relative recall for searches by subject descriptors is 56 per cent.

Research limitations/implications

Although this investigation concentrates on a very specific database (the Iranian Dissertations database), its findings are offered in the wider context of a number of other related studies.

Practical implications

It can be concluded that searching by subject descriptors gives better results than searching by title keywords.

Originality/value

The paper reaffirms the value of assigned subject descriptors, while noting the effectiveness of title keywords in certain contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the research experience of PhD students of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and factors influencing this experience.

Design/methodology/approach

The information was gathered through a questionnaire which has been developed based on PREQ questionnaire. The statistical populations of this study consist of those PhD students whose research proposal had been approved by the educational council of their faculty or had defended their dissertation. By using random sampling method, 118 questionnaires were collected.

Findings

The findings showed that there is a significant relationship between all of the research experience factors and significant differences between overall satisfactions of the students on their research experience. Variables such as sex and different stages of research have positive and significant impact on the research experience of the respondents.

Originality/value

The outcomes of this study suggest that among the PhD students of Ferdowsi University, there is a relative satisfaction with factors making up the research experience.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to construct a model for measuring the strength and weakness of individual disciplines.

Design/methodology/approach

The model is developed based on the balanced approach. The model is tested on Iranian and Malaysian social sciences publications between 1991‐2008 as a case study.

Findings

The result indicates that the differences in rankings for measures of publication output, citation distribution, and mean observed citation rate are large, which justifies the use of the scientific power index which is introduced in this paper.

Originality/value

Scientific power index proposes an objective mode of measuring performance at an aggregate level that will allow a comparison of individual fields within different disciplinary areas like technological sciences, medicine, natural science, social sciences, and humanities at national or global levels. The disciplinary characterization of national research efforts identifies the mainstream and dominant scientific fields, thus the developed index can be important tool for science policy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overall picture of women's participation in Iranian scientific production.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 7,846 articles was obtained from the three ISI databases: Science Citation Index (SCI), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) for the study period 2005‐2010. The articles were broken down by gender. Then for the scope of this study, research productivity, collaboration pattern, scientific‐disciplinary, and research impact were investigated.

Findings

A chi‐square test showed that there is a significant difference between the male and female research output in the three databases. Females accounted for 13 percent of the articles indexed in ISI databases during the study period. There is a gap of approximately 87 percent in research productivity between males and females in Iran. Iranian women are more active in the areas of chemistry, clinical medicine and general social sciences.

Originality/value

The paper highlights the role of women in science and the gap of research productivity between men and women; it may help illuminate policy decisions to promote female research in the country.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the author self‐citation behavior in four disciplines: electronic engineering, general and internal medicine, organic chemistry and plant sciences.

Design/methodology/approach

By using SCI and random stratified method 1,000 articles were analysed as a sample in the four disciplines during 2004‐2006.

Findings

It was found that about 60 per cent of the articles in the four disciplines' literature contained at least one self‐citation. Four disciplines all showed skewed distributions of articles citation rates, either self‐citation or other citations. Organic chemistry articles had the highest self‐citations than the other disciplines. Share of self‐citation decreases with growing time window. The expected self‐citation rate increased with growing number of citation, co‐authorship and author productivity.

Originality/value

The outcomes of this study suggest that self‐citation indicators should be used as supplementary indicators in evaluative bibliometrics.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between information technology and internal controls of state agencies in Iran.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between information technology and internal controls of state agencies in Iran.

Design/Methodology/Approach

The research population includes all auditors and managers working in public sector. Data collection instrument is a questionnaire designed by the researcher and administrated during March 5, 2016. The collected data are analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics (binomial test).

Findings

The findings of the research show that there is a significant relationship between information technology and internal controls (administrative, financial and accounting controls, risk assessment, information and communication, control activities and monitoring). Moreover, the alteration of data collection methods (from traditional to modern) and the written instructions (in information technology) have a positive effect on the internal control and its subscales.

Originality/value

With regard to the emphasis on the development of computer application and the use of new processing facilities and the exchange of information and its specific controlling consequences, this is an innovative research.

The purpose of this article is to present an aggregated methodology for construction of the stop word list in Farsi language and generate a generic Farsi stop word list.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to present an aggregated methodology for construction of the stop word list in Farsi language and generate a generic Farsi stop word list.

Design/methodology/approach

The stop word list is extracted based on: syntactic classes, domain dependent, corpus statistic and expert judgments. Some of the main challenges that arise in the Farsi automatic text processing are outlined as well.

Findings

Results from the techniques are aggregated and a general Farsi stop word list containing 927 words is generated.

Practical implications

The created stop word list can affect the efficiency and effectiveness of retrieval and indexing process in Farsi information retrieval system, moreover, it can play an important role during Farsi text segmentation.

Originality/value

Our stop word extraction algorithm is a promising technique; it could be applied into other languages that they have ambiguities in automatic text segmentation.
