Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the rationale for using social engineering as a tool to impact the nationalization of workforce in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Design/methodology/approach

Interpretative and exploratory approaches have been employed for this research. Accordingly, the study has extensively reviewed government documents, reports of international organizations and relevant academic literature, including journal articles, conference papers and unpublished dissertations.

Findings

The findings show that the UAE Government has initiated multiple policies and programs to enhance participation of indigenous Emiratis in the burgeoning labor market which has been hitherto dominated by the expatriates. However, while the Emiratization programs are on the verge of fulfilling the targets in the public sector job market, significant gaps exist between the targets and accomplishments in the private sector, causing policy concern.

Originality/value

This paper links theoretical insights from the social engineering model used in the social sciences research to analyze the dynamics of workforce nationalization. The study will be helpful to inform further empirical research in this area.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to outline the development steps that should be undertaken by any executives who are to be sent on an expatriate assignment to take the lead in a foreign subsidiary location. It highlights the need to develop an understanding of the host country's business practices, cultural preferences and operational methods.

Design/methodology/approach

This article explores contemporary thinking and practice and is based on work carried out over the past two years. It also uses arguments from organizational development and learning literature.

Findings

The paper explains that programs need to impart skills and knowledge in the area of cross cultural empathy, cross cultural communication and leadership, and, finally, the individual's self efficacy and level of adaptability.

Practical implications

The paper provides insights and practical tools to assist in the development of a successful international executive.

Originality/value

The short paper is designed for executives and researchers with demanding lifestyles and assists in getting an in‐depth overview by selecting the most relevant information and presenting it in a condensed and easy‐to‐digest format.

Abstract

Zakah is an important ethico‐economic institution in the Islamic code of life. It provides a mandatory mechanism for sharing societal resources in a Muslim community. It redistributes income and wealth, plays an important role in poverty alleviation, and thus can contribute to grassroot development. This paper analyzes Zakah's role in this context, and suggests how this institution can be made an instrument of self‐reliance and sustainable development of those who live below poverty line.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present the variations of optimal seismic control of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structure using different structural systems. Different third-dimensional mathematical models are used to examine the responses of multistory flexibly connected frames subjected to earthquake excitations.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper examined a G + 50 multi-storied high-rise structure, which is analyzed using different combinations of moment resistant frames, shear walls, seismic outrigger systems and seismic dampers to observe the effectiveness during ground motion against soft soil conditions. The damping coefficients of added dampers, providing both upper and lower levels are taken into consideration. A finite element modeling and analysis is generated. Then the nature of the structure exposed to ground motion is captured with response spectrum analysis, using BNBC-2020 for four different seismic zones in Bangladesh.

Findings

The response of the structure is investigated according to the amplitude of the displacements, drifts, base shear, stiffness and torsion. The numerical results indicate that adding dampers at the base level can be the most effective against seismic control. However, placing an outrigger bracing system at the middle and top end with shear wall can be the most effective for controlling displacements and drifts.

Originality/value

The response of high-rise structures to seismic forces in Bangladesh’s soft soil conditions is examined at various levels in this study. This study is an original research which contributes to the knowledge to build earthquake resisting high-rises in Bangladesh.
