Abstract

Purpose

Notwithstanding been a significant stakeholder in the sustainable and responsible tourism (RT) development and management process, worldwide very few studies exclusively investigated tourists’ attitudes towards them. Moreover, studies are especially missing for developing and least developed countries where domestic tourism market is more significant than international market. Besides, in Bangladesh, there is no study as yet which aimed to identify domestic tourists’ attitudes towards responsible tourism management (RTM) and to its triple bottom line (TBL) components. So, the purpose of this paper is to fill these gaps, contributing thus to the existing RTM literature.

Design/methodology/approach

After conducting extensive literature review, this study followed both the exploratory (in-depth interview) and single cross-sectional descriptive (survey) research designs. Further, this study used descriptive statistics (frequency distribution analysis) and multivariate dependence data analysis technique (multiple regression analysis) to analyse the data collected from the 385 sample respondents through systematic random sampling.

Findings

Based on the findings, the present study argues, Bangladeshi tourists have positive attitudes towards each of the TBL components and to RTM, however, there is scope for further improvement. This study also suggests that there is a close link between tourists’ attitudes and their socio-demographic characteristics.

Originality/value

With the support and reference to this study, destination management organisations can work on each of the TBL components to enhance Bangladeshi tourists’ positive attitudes towards RT practices at Cox’s Bazar (CB). Moreover, this study on CB, Bangladesh also contributes to the RTM literature and minimises the known literature gap for developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering the constraints on resources and the need for firms’ planning to avoid recession and underdevelopment, enhanced investment efficiency would promote the capital market attractiveness and increase the performance of capital market investment. Empowering these markets through investment efficiency requires to promote the flow of information disclosure to stakeholders to provide the greater coherence and integration of information, enhance equal decision-making capabilities and promote trust and confidence in the company. The present study aims to examine the impact of stakeholder relationship capability on investment efficiency through testing the mosaic theory.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, two criteria (namely, the ratio of net fixed assets to total assets and investment level) were used to measure investment efficiency. Furthermore, meta-synthesis and Delphi analyses were adopted based on a five-point Likert scale to measure the development of stakeholder relationship capability. To collect the research data, the questionnaires were sent to 142 companies in 2019, of which 112 questionnaires were returned by the managers of the firms listed in Tehran Stock Exchange. To fit and test the research hypothesis, partial least squares analysis was used.

Findings

After confirming the fit of the model, the results revealed that the stakeholder relationship capability had a positive and significant effect on investment efficiency.

Originality/value

With regard to the mosaic theory, this finding confirms that the equity of information in reflecting news and knowledge among stakeholders can promote the role of the firm’s stakeholder relationship capability, thus enhancing the investment efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to achieve an optimal design for distribution transformers considering cost and power losses. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used as an optimization tool for minimizing the objective functions of design procedure which are cost and electrical and iron losses.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, distribution transformer losses are considered as operating costs. Also, transformer construction cost which depends on the amount of iron and copper in the structure is assumed as its initial cost. In addition, some other important constraints such as appropriate ranges of transformer efficiency, voltage regulation, temperature rise, no-load current, and winding fill factor are investigated in the design procedure. The PSO algorithm is applied to find optimum amount of needed copper and iron for a typical distribution transformer. Moreover, transformer impedance considered as a constraint to achieve an acceptable voltage regulation in the design process.

Findings

It is shown that the proposed design procedure provides a simple and effective approach to estimate the flux and current densities for minimizing the active part cost and active power losses which means reduction in amount of transformer total owning cost (TOC).

Originality/value

The methodology advances a proposal for reducing distribution transformers costs using PSO algorithm. The approach considers the aforementioned constraints and TOC to minimize the active part cost and maximize the efficiency. It is demonstrated that a designed transformer will not be optimum when the transformer losses over years are not considered in design procedure. Finally, the results prove the effectiveness of the proposed procedure in designing cost-effective distribution transformers from its initial cost until its whole life.

Abstract

Purpose

Developing country workers mainly face important challenges when examining equality in health services utilization among the population and identifying influential factors. The purpose of this paper us to: understand health service use among households with different socio-economic status in Isfahan province; and to investigate probable inequality determinants in service utilization.

Design/methodology/approach

Almost 1,040 households living in Isfahan province participated in this cross-sectional study in 2013. Data were collected by a questionnaire with three sections: demographic characteristics; socio-economic status; and health services utilization. The concentration index was applied to measure inequality. Analysts used STATA 11.

Findings

Economic status, educational level, insurance coverage and household gender were the most influential factors on health services utilization. Those with a high socio-economic level were more likely to demand and use such services; although self-medication patterns showed an opposite trend.

Practical implications

Female-headed families face with more difficulties in access to basic human needs including health. Supportive policies are needed to meet their demands.

Originality/value

The authors used principle component analysis to assess households’ economic situation, which reduced the variables into a single index.

Abstract

This study explores whether metacognitive strategy training can influence the lexical knowledge of L2 learners of the present study, and what they think about the use of metacognitive strategies in language learning classes. To do so, a 50-item multiple-choice vocabulary test, developed by the researchers based upon Nation’s (1990) levels of language proficiency, was employed to measure the learners’ vocabulary knowledge progress during the period of instruction. The instruction received by the experimental group was based on the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) Model, developed and validated by Chamot and O’Malley (1994). The findings revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in their endeavors for comprehending and producing vocabulary. This may be attributed to the fact that after this intervention, participants have developed their metacognitive awareness and their thinking skills. The study concludes with pedagogical implications and highlights avenues for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the stability of laminated shells subjected to axial loads or external pressure with considering various geometries and boundary conditions. The main aim of the present study is developing an efficient combined method which uses the advantages of different methods, such as finite element method (FEM) and isogeometric analysis (IGA), to achieve multipurpose targets. Two types of material including laminated composite and sandwich functionally graded material are considered.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel type of finite strip method called isogeometric B3-spline finite strip method (IG-SFSM) is used to solve the eigenvalue buckling problem. IG-SFSM uses B3-spline basis functions to interpolate the buckling displacements and mapping operations in the longitudinal direction of the strips, whereas the Lagrangian functions are used in transverse direction. The current presented IG-SFSM is formulated based on the degenerated shell method.

Findings

The buckling behavior of laminated shells is discussed by solving several examples corresponding to shells with various geometries, boundary conditions and material properties. The effects of mechanical and geometrical properties on critical loads of shells are investigated using the related results obtained by IG-SFSM.

Originality/value

This paper shows that the proposed IG-SFSM leads to the critical loads with an approved accuracy comparing with the same examples extracted from the literature. Moreover, it leads to a high level of convergence rate and low cost of solving the stability problems in comparison to the FEM.

Abstract

Purpose

Images taken from construction site interiors often suffer from low illumination and poor natural colors, which restrict their application for high-level site management purposes. The state-of-the-art low-light image enhancement method provides promising image enhancement results. However, they generally require a longer execution time to complete the enhancement. This study aims to develop a refined image enhancement approach to improve execution efficiency and performance accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

To develop the refined illumination enhancement algorithm named enhanced illumination quality (EIQ), a quadratic expression was first added to the initial illumination map. Subsequently, an adjusted weight matrix was added to improve the smoothness of the illumination map. A coordinated descent optimization algorithm was then applied to minimize the processing time. Gamma correction was also applied to further enhance the illumination map. Finally, a frame comparing and averaging method was used to identify interior site progress.

Findings

The proposed refined approach took around 4.36–4.52 s to achieve the expected results while outperforming the current low-light image enhancement method. EIQ demonstrated a lower lightness-order error and provided higher object resolution in enhanced images. EIQ also has a higher structural similarity index and peak-signal-to-noise ratio, which indicated better image reconstruction performance.

Originality/value

The proposed approach provides an alternative to shorten the execution time, improve equalization of the illumination map and provide a better image reconstruction. The approach could be applied to low-light video enhancement tasks and other dark or poor jobsite images for object detection processes.

Abstract

Purpose

As hospitals are the most costly service providers in every healthcare systems, special attention should be given to their performance in terms of resource allocation and consumption. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate technical, allocative and economic efficiency in intensive care units (ICUs) of hospitals affiliated by Yazd University of Medical Sciences (YUMS) in 2015.

Design/methodology/approach

This was a descriptive, analytical study conducted in ICUs of seven training hospitals affiliated by YUMS using data envelopment analysis (DEA) in 2015. The number of physicians, nurses, active beds and equipment were regarded as input variables and bed occupancy rate, the number of discharged patients, economic information such as bed price and physicians’ fees were mentioned as output variables of the study. Available data from study variables were retrospectively gathered and analyzed through the Deap 2.1 software using the variable returns to scale methodology.

Findings

The study findings revealed the average scores of allocative, economic, technical, managerial and scale efficiency to be relatively 0.956, 0.866, 0.883, 0.89 and 0.913. Regarding to latter three types of efficiency, five hospitals had desirable performance.

Practical implications

Given that additional costs due to an extra number of manpower or unnecessary capital resources impose economic pressure on hospitals also the fact that reduction of surplus production plays a major role in reducing such expenditures in hospitals, it is suggested that departments with low efficiency reduce their input surpluses to achieve the optimal level of performance.

Originality/value

The authors applied a DEA approach to measure allocative, economic, technical, managerial and scale efficiency of under-study hospitals. This is a helpful linear programming method which acts as a powerful and understandable approach for comparative performance assessment in healthcare settings and a guidance for healthcare managers to improve their departments’ performance.
