Abstract

Microcomputer systems which are the most relevant to today′s manager are the prime focus. New developments during the last 18 months are given priority. Microprocessors used in recent microcomputer systems in relation to the RISC and CISC technologies are discussed. Networking and standardisation, two major areas of development, are described, along with the hardware, software and peripherals of microsystems. Finally, the application to managers is analysed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of brand transgression severity on different behavioral responses (BRs). In addition, the role of perceived brand betrayal (BB) is examined as a mediator between brand transgression severity and BRs.

Design/methodology/approach

A total number of 331 customers of Tehran travel agencies were recruited as the statistical sample. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 4 software was used to analyze the collected data.

Findings

The results showed that the severity of brand transgression significantly affects perceived BB and customer BR, including avoidance and retaliatory behaviors. Moreover, the results showed that perceived BB has a mediating role in the relationship between brand transgression severity and reparatory and retaliatory behaviors.

Originality/value

This study adds to the understanding of consumer behavior by demonstrating how customers react to brand transgression severity through perceived BB.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide lessons from the emergence of the sharing economy after the 2008 recession and helps managers prepare more effectively for recessions in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

In this conceptual paper, the authors build on research on the sharing economy and study the best practices contributing to the sharing economy’s emergence and growth after the 2008 recession. The authors identify the key characteristics of this new economic sector and share lessons that can be used by other companies.

Findings

The authors recommend five major takeaways: seeking a more flexible supply; actively watching the trends; leveraging customers like employees; using advanced data science and technology like the sharing economy companies; and proactively avoiding panicked responses. This will help companies succeed during recessionary times – and the boom times that follow.

Originality/value

This is the first paper that, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, investigates the interplay between the sharing economy and recession and highlights practical lessons.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between employee happiness at work and organizational citizenship behaviour in Indian private sector banks. In this study, happiness at work is represented by three constructs: job satisfaction, affective commitment and work engagement. The study also investigates whether employees’ perception of diversity management practices mediates the relationship between happiness at work and organizational citizenship behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 498 responses from employees of three major private sector banks in the Delhi-NCR region were analysed to investigate relationships between dependent, independent and mediating variables by using structural equation modelling.

Findings

Happiness at work has a significant positive impact on organizational citizenship behaviour, and employees’ perception of diversity management plays a strong mediating role between the relationship of happiness at work and organizational citizenship behaviour.

Practical implications

Happiness at work and perception of diversity management have a significant influence on organizational citizenship behaviour of banking employees. Private sector banks in India need to make strategies for workplace happiness and diversity management so that the employees work as citizens of the bank and willingly take responsibility for extra-role behaviour along with their assigned roles.

Originality/value

The findings of this paper reveal that although employees may experience happiness at work represented by job satisfaction, affective commitment and work engagement, their happiness is less likely to be reflected in their organizational citizenship behaviour until they have a positive perception of the workforce diversity management practices. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is unique in terms of its emphasis on the mediating role of diversity management on employees’ happiness and organizational citizenship behaviour in Indian private sector banks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to fill the gap in income-environment literature by adding agricultural contribution to the nexus. The authors investigate the short-run and long-run impact of agricultural contribution, renewable energy consumption, real income, trade liberalisation and urbanisation on carbon emissions for a balanced panel of five South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries spanning the period 1990-2013.

Design/methodology/approach

Pedroni and Kao cointegration techniques have been used to test the existence of long-run relationship between the variables. The directions of causal relationships have been verified using Granger causality tests. Further, the long-run parameters of the baseline equation have been estimated by using the fully modified ordinary least squares, the technique developed by Pedroni, (2001a) for heterogeneous cointegrated panels.

Findings

The result reveals that agricultural contribution and renewable energy consumption improve environmental quality in the long run, while urbanisation and per capita real income degrade it. The study did not find any evidence of “pollution heaven hypothesis” in the selected countries. The Granger causality tests confirm bidirectional causality between carbon emissions and income and between carbon emissions and urbanisation. In addition, there is unidirectional causality running from agricultural contribution to renewable energy consumption.

Originality/value

This is the only study to investigate the role of agriculture sector in carbon mitigation from a panel of South Asian economies. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is also the first study to test the applicability of “pollution heaven hypothesis” for SAARC countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceived severity of service failure (PSSF) and service recovery strategies (SRSs) as antecedents of customer forgiveness (CF), customer reconciliation, negative word-of-mouth and re-patronage intention as outcomes across two Middle Eastern countries: Egypt and Oman.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative technique was used, using a questionnaire, to collect data from customers of the national airline companies of Egypt and Oman. The perspectives of 1,084 airline customers were analysed using partial least squares-structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results of this study show that service failure severity has a negative influence on the effectiveness of SRSs. In turn, proper SRSs strongly and positively affect both Egyptian and Omani CF. Furthermore, the findings of this study indicate that service failure habit plays an important role in increasing the negative influence of perceived service failure severity on Egyptian, but not Omani, CF. Overall, results suggest that CF differs considerably between Egyptians and Omanis.

Originality/value

This study developed and empirically examined a comprehensive conceptual model of the drivers and outcomes of CF of airline companies. This study provides academics with meaningful insights into how social and cultural differences between customers in different countries can result in sometimes dramatically different behaviours following a service failure.

Este estudio analizó la gravedad percibida de los fallos del servicio de reclamaciones (PSSF) y quejas como antecedentes de respuesta a los clientes, la reconciliación con el mismo, el boca a boca negativo y la intención de patrocinio como resultados en dos países del Medio Oriente (MO): Egipto y Omán.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

se empleó una técnica cuantitativa, utilizando un cuestionario, para recopilar datos de los clientes de las compañías aéreas nacionales de Egipto y Omán. Se analizaron las perspectivas de 1084 clientes de aerolíneas utilizando PLS-SEM.

Resultados

los resultados muestran que la gravedad de los fallos en el servicio tiene una influencia negativa en la efectividad de las estrategias del servicio de reclamaciones. Asimismo, las estrategias de este tipo afectan fuerte y positivamente sobre la empatía de los clientes egipcios y omaníes. Además, los resultados indican que los fallos en el servicio de quejas, juega un papel importante en el aumento de la influencia negativa de la severidad percibida sobre el servicio y la consideración a la hora de perdonar por parte del cliente egipcio, pero no en el omaní. En general, los resultados sugieren que el perdón del cliente difiere considerablemente entre egipcios y omaníes.

Originalidad/valor

el estudio se desarrolló y se implementó empíricamente sobre un modelo conceptual integrado de impulsores y resultados del perdón de los clientes de las compañías aéreas. El estudio brinda a los académicos información significativa sobre cómo las diferencias sociales y culturales entre los clientes en diferentes países pueden resultar en comportamientos a veces dramáticamente diferentes en los fallos en el servicio.

Abstract

The “Blue Economy” is a recent topic of study that spans those economic activities which depend on ecosystem services, thereby including such sectors as tourism, maritime transport, energy, water, fishing, among others. However, there is only limited research approaching the added value produced by marine activities connected with these sectors. This research contributes to the literature by providing interpretations of blue economy factors in terms of their added economic value. The authors deployed secondary data from 2009 to 2020 from the European Union Economy Database to analyze six sectors involving maritime activities: coastal tourism, living marine resources, non-living marine resources, port activities, shipbuilding and repair, and maritime transport. This study highlights how the sustainability of countries depends on the ability to manage their natural resources, especially maritime resources. Furthermore, sustainability depends on the economic interpretation of countries and sectors over time with regard to creating value and managing the activities derived from ecosystem services.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a scale for new ways of working (NWW) in higher education institutions in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The study also intends to validate the psychometric properties of the developed scale.

Design/methodology/approach

This study targeted the academic staff of universities in the GCC region. Out of the 1,200 questionnaires distributed, only 1,016 questionnaires represented valid responses. Because there was not a unified theory for NWW, the authors developed a six-dimension tool that covered all virtual work aspects and psychometrically validated.

Findings

The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed a structural model of six factors: flexible work location; work–life balance; communication; workplace design at home; culture and motivation; and satisfaction. The model showed a satisfactory fit. The scale consisted of 32 items with a high Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.85, which demonstrated good internal consistency. The results also suggested that the NWW scale had adequate convergent and divergent validity.

Research limitations/implications

The data for the current study is a cross-sectional that represents a single sector; therefore, it would be more interesting to include more sectors. The study findings contribute to the ongoing debate in feasibility and usefulness of NWW pre, during and post-Covid-19 crisis. This research has offered a new scale for measuring NWW that fits dynamic educational environment where continuous learning and innovation are the key critical factors for survival. For this reason, further future studies need to refine, validate and improve the current scale structure. Also, because the current scale is by no means conclusive, future studies may look at other work characteristics and contextual factors that determine the success of NWW.

Practical implications

Practitioners can use the results of the current study as an intervention tool to leverage NWW acceptance to regain benefits and mitigate negative consequences. In addition, policymakers may use the scale as an evaluation tool to examine the readiness of higher education institutions to counter the COVID-19 crisis.

Originality/value

The originality of this work stems from the fact that it is the first study to develop a scale for NWW and test its psychometric properties in higher education institutions in the GCC countries, a domain that has been ignored by the extant literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The study is an endeavour to find out the preservation status of rare documents in Srinagar. The rare documents, here, mean the manuscripts and rare books, journals, reports, magazines, archival documents, etc. These resources are available in private libraries of individuals and religious institutions in Srinagar. This study aims to find these private libraries of individuals/families and religious institutions, which are unknown to the scholarly world and observe the preservation status of rare documents. The main focus is to document their present preservation status to give an opportunity to the stakeholders, particularly the government organizations, to take appropriate action before they are lost forever.

Design/methodology/approach

Before conducting the survey, the investigator interviewed 114 persons including literary persons, faith leaders, librarians, faculty members from various prominent institutions in Srinagar to get leads regarding the persons/families and religious institutions in possession of rare documents. The investigator gathered data through two different schedules and later analyzed the same in this study after carrying out a pilot study to make necessary changes to the schedules compiled for the study. The investigator visited personally each family/individual and religious institution to gather the data for months together.

Findings

An arduous job was carried out in which around 111 individuals/families and religious institutions were found to be having such rare resources. However, the data gathered reveals a dismal picture of private libraries and religious institutions, in possession of rare documents, as almost all caretakers/ families are devoid of any knowledge regarding the maintenance of these important sources of knowledge. Further, the traditional methods of preservation are still in vogue in some private libraries. These traditional methods have opened new areas of research while at the same time can prove detrimental to the collection if they are useless.

Originality/value

The study is the first of its kind in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir i.e. Srinagar. The study gives an idea of preservation status of manuscripts and rare documents including books, magazines, journals, archival documents, etc. so that the same are taken care of for posterity. The study is an eye-opener for the policymakers, conservators, archivists and others interested in historical documents. The study will help in furthering the research process as it needs to be ascertained whether the traditional methods of preservation are fruitful. In short, the study is quite helpful in understanding the nature of collection in Srinagar so that appropriate steps are taken by all particularly the Government in J&K. The paper will surely help in the policy formulation in the future.
