The various physical and surface‐chemical factors which might affect the lubricating action of molybdenum disulphide are discussed; the importance of particle size and shape are emphasized. Up to date thoughts on lubrication mechanism are examined together with various environmental factors which can affect its industrial use. Recent Climax development work, particularly with respect to MoS2 greases concludes the paper.

Abstract

LONG before man learnt to make fire by the friction of wood, he experienced the burden of friction in dragging home his kill. Perhaps it is not too fanciful to suppose that the torn sides of his beast gave the first solid lubricant. Blood and mutton fat were seriously recommended as lubricants for church bell trunnions as recently as the 17th century. Indoed we still reckon fatty acids the best of all boundary lubricants. The range of man's activities has increased enormously in the present century, and particularly in the last few decades. Men have circled the earth in space; a space ship is on its way to examine another planet; terrestrial man is boring to the bottom of the earth's crust; others have descended to the depths of the ocean, and oven established a home on the floor of the Mediterranean, Speeds have increased by factors of thousands, temperatures range from near absolute zero to thousands of degrees; and a new environment of high‐intensity nuclear radiation has been created. Still, objects must move over and along each other in these exotic conditions; and to a large extent solid lubricants can provide the answer to the frictional problems.

Abstract

The advantages of Molybdenum Disulphide powders for dry lubrication under extremes of temperature are well known and these products have solved a great number of extremely dfficult lubrication problems where conventional lubricants have completely failed. It is also known that, although liquid dispersions of Molybdenum Disulphide provide most valuable lubricants for many industrial purposes, it is in dry lubrication that MoS2 has proved the most valuable. This is probably because, hitherto, quasi‐colloidal dispersions lose some of the advantages of the dry powders, possibly due to oxidation. Again, this may, in turn, be due to the fact that the particle size of these powders has, up to now, not been smaller than three‐quarters of a micron and usually ranging from this size up to three microns.

Abstract

THE LUBRICATING PROPERTIES and industrial uses of Molybdenum Disulphide are sufficiently known and covered in literature to need no comment. It has been known for some years that this solid lubricant, in common with graphite, offers a performance that appears primarily to be related to the amount of impurities present, and secondly to the particle size of the powder, Thus for some industrial lubrication it appears desirable to aim at a size of powder characterised by a maximum number of particles between 1 and 10µ. At the lower end of the scale it would seem that excessive fineness in dispersions (i.e., below 1µ) tends to militate against performance, although for acid refined powders, the upper limit is considerably extended.

Abstract

INTEREST in tin powder for powder metallurgy is growing; not only does it find a place in non‐ferrous powder metallurgy, as in sintered porous bronzes used for bearings, but it is valuable as a sintering acid in ferrous powder metallurgy. Work at the Tin Research Institute demonstrates the advantages of small additions of tin powder in iron‐copper‐tin compacts for reducing the sintering temperature and increasing the dimensional stability and wear resistance. Tin powders are beingused worldwide for this purpose and not least in Japan.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the influence of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) concentrations (5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15 Wt.%) on the microstructure and tribological property of the self-lubrication cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasive composites.

Design/methodology/approach

Three point bending method and rotating sliding test are used to evaluate the flexural strength and tribological property of self-lubricating CBN abrasive composites. Microstructure, wear morphology of the ball and scratch are supported by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscope and three-dimensional confocal microscopy, etc.

Findings

The MoS2 concentration has a significant influence on the interface microstructure between CBN abrasives and matrix alloys, and thus, affects the flexural strength of CBN abrasive composites. The grain fracture modes of CBN abrasive composites are transformed from the transgranular fracture into intergranular fracture as the MoS2 concentrations increase. Additionally, the friction coefficient of as-sintered samples decreases with the MoS2 concentrations. The MoS2 concentrations of 10 Wt.% are final determined to fabricate self-lubricating composites in basis of the mechanical and lubricating property.

Originality/value

The ball is fabricated under vacuum sintering process. The tribological property of self-lubricating CBN abrasive composites is evaluated in terms of the friction coefficient and morphologies of the ball and scratches after rotating sliding tests.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the tribological properties of MoS2 nano‐sized hollow spheres in liquid paraffin (LP) and the corresponding action mechanism. Morever, its feasibity of industrial application as an oil additive in the industrial lubrication field is also explored.

Design/methodology/approach

The tribological properties of MoS2 nano‐sized hollow spheres (NH‐MoS2) modified by Cyanex 301(di‐(2,4,4‐trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid) with size of 200 ∼ 300 nm in LP are studied and compared with those of the commercial colloidal MoS2 (CC‐MoS2) on a four‐ball tester and an Optimol SRV Oscillating friction and wear tester in a ball‐on disk configuration. The worn surfaces of the lower flat disc are examined with a scanning electron microscopy and an X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively.

Findings

Results show that NH‐MoS2 is a better extreme‐pressure additive and anti‐wear (AW) and friction‐reducing additive in LP than CC‐MoS2. Under the optimum concentration of 0.5 per cent for both NH‐MoS2 and CC‐MoS2 and the load of 400 N, the friction coefficient of NH‐MoS2 + LP and CC‐MoS2 + LP decreases about 43.8 and 6.3 per cent, and the wear volume loss decreases about 60.3 and 12.0 per cent compared with the pure LP. The boundary lubrication mechanism for NH‐MoS2 + LP can be deduced as the effective chemical adsorption protective film formed by the long chain alkyls R and active elements (S and P) in the modification layer and tribochemical reaction film containing the tribochemical products of the additive. Moreover, sliding and rolling frictions co‐exist in NH‐MoS2 + LP, doing contributions to the good tribological properties as well.

Originality/value

In this paper, the Cyanex 301‐modified MoS2 nano‐sized hollow spheres with diameter of 200 ∼ 300 nm are firstly added into LP to investigate its tribological properties. The excellent AW and friction‐reducing properties indicate that this MoS2 hollow spheres product is a good oil additive, and the fundamental data presented here will be useful for its further industrial application in the future.

Abstract

A method extensively used in the production of optically flat and finely finished surfaces is that of lapping the surface upon a plate using a loose abrasive mixed into a slurry form with a carrying fluid. If the surfaces finished in this way are in continuous or intermittent sliding contact, it is the author's opinion that any abrasives retained in their surfaces will affect surface wear. This paper reported on some exploratory work to indicate the degree of embedment of abrasive in certain materials lapped by hand.
