Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to focus on how law, together with the internet, has created a new environment in the legal arena; and how the USA as a high‐tech nation relying upon previous territorial experience is making a new pathway for all the concerned persons and organizations to overcome the problems that have come out of cyber peculiarity.
Design/methodology/approach
This article is based on keen observation and intensive analysis of the US case laws and practices. This article concentrates on the study of the American cases as a representative type of hi‐tech nations for searching the influences of traditional territorial concept on the settlement of internet cases.
Findings
In spite of the inevitability of a distinct set of laws and legal principles to be adopted for cyber offences, the traditional territorial law can provide elements for cyber‐legal issues. As for being a pioneer hi‐tech nation, the US courts, whether federal or provincial, are very much inclined to decide the internet cases on the basis of territorial concept by applying the principles of traditional territorial notions.
Originality/value
The judges, lawyers, jurists, governments, public authorities, local authorities, statutory bodies and all other persons and institutes concerned from around the world shall find indications to chalk out the framework of solution for cyber disputes from the US practices.

The purpose of this paper is to focus on existing law, the legal system and jurisprudence circling round territorial concepts.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is an opinion piece based on current and recent analysis of legal principle.
Findings
After the emergence of the internet as well as cyberspace, human activities are not confined solely to the physical world. They have been extended to a very different and peculiar non‐physical world. This world is everywhere and at the same time it is nowhere; and necessarily it is difficult to prescribe rules and enforce the same regarding cyberspace for its everywhere and nowhere proposition. The elementary concept of jurisprudence e.g. title, ownership and possession, etc. cannot be considered in the way we usually understand in case of real world. However, cyberspace has to be controlled by a legal framework that involves new ideas, leading to a new challenge in existing legal philosophy exclusively based on territorial concept.
Originality/value
Traditional territorial jurisprudence has to be revised in the light of cyber necessities arising out of high technological development. Moreover, certain new institutions have to be established in order to apply new principles in dispute settlement of cyber matters. This paper both identifies the need and options for the future.

Abstract
Presents an updated version of a paper given by the author at an international conference in Athens 2000. Briefly outlines the development of the internet and e‐commerce and the effect of globalization. Considers the potential for the EU to standardize rules and advance its economic integration agenda. Looks at present EU laws in this area. Covers the unicitral model law on electronic commerce, its merits and its problems. Discusses personal jurisdiction under traditional rules and cyberspace transactions. Concludes that existing legislation must be re‐evaluated in the light of technological advances, the need for a more mobile kind of legal person and the worldwide nature of transactions across territorial boundaries, paperless contracts and digital signatures and the use of self‐regulation are also covered.

Abstract
Purpose
Aftercare is an important predictor of outcomes following treatment for substance abuse. Despite this, there is evidence that the great majority of substance abusing clients choose not to participate in aftercare. Aftercare programs that are tied to specific residential treatment facilities, sometimes known as alumni groups or alumni clubs, might increase participation by offering former residents the opportunity to maintain treatment oriented social networks. Therapeutic communities (TCs), which emphasize mutual aid between residents, are ideal candidates for such programs. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 100 randomly chosen former TC residents were randomly surveyed regarding their contact with fellow alumni and their exchange of recovery oriented helping behaviors. A thirty day timeline follow-back methodology was used.
Findings
Contact was primarily through electronic means, particularly phone calls, texts and the alumni club Facebook page. Participants who reported more electronic contact also reported more days in which they offered and received recovery oriented help. Participants who were African American or had spent more time in TC treatment offered and received recovery oriented help on more days.
Research limitations/implications
While this is an exploratory study limited to one TC, this alumni club allows for the maintenance of a mutual aid network after termination. That network primarily consists of electronic forms of contact. A longer time spent in TC treatment may allow for the internalization of the practice of mutual aid. Further research on alumni clubs is warranted.
Originality/value
This is the first survey of TC alumni club members.

Investigates the differences in protocols between arbitral tribunals and courts, with particular emphasis on US, Greek and English law. Gives examples of each country and its way of using the law in specific circumstances, and shows the variations therein. Sums up that arbitration is much the better way to gok as it avoids delays and expenses, plus the vexation/frustration of normal litigation. Concludes that the US and Greek constitutions and common law tradition in England appear to allow involved parties to choose their own judge, who can thus be an arbitrator. Discusses e‐commerce and speculates on this for the future.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to develop an estimation tool for warpage behavior of slim printed circuit board (PCB) array while soldering with electronic components by using finite element method. One of the essential requirements for handheld devices, such as smart phone, digital camera, and Note-PC, is the slim design to satisfy the customers’ desires. Accordingly, the printed circuit board (PCB) should be also thinner for a slim appearance, which would result in decreasing the PCB’s bending stiffness. This means that PCB deforms severely during the reflow (soldering) process where the peak temperature goes up to 250°C. Therefore, it is important to estimate PCB deformation at a high temperature for thermo-mechanical quality/reliability after reflow process.
Design/methodology/approach
A numerical simulation technique was devised and customized to accurately estimate the behavior of a thin printed board assembly (PBA) during reflow by considering all components, including PCB, microelectronic packages and solder interconnects.
Findings
By applying appropriate constraints and boundary conditions, it was found that PBA’s warpage can be accurately predicted during the reflow process. The results were also validated by warpage measurement, which showed a fairly good agreement with one and another.
Research limitations/implications
For research limitations, there are many assumptions regarding numerical modeling. That is, the viscoplastic material property of solder ball is ignored, the reflow profile is simplified and the accurate heat capacity is not considered. Furthermore, the residual stress within the PCB, generated at PCB manufacturing process, is not included in this paper.
Practical implications
This paper shows how to calculate PBA warpage during the reflow process as accurately as possible. This methodology helps a PCB designer and surface-mount technology (SMT) process manager to predict a PBA warpage issue and modify PCB design before PCB real fabrication. Practically, this modeling and simulation process can be easily performed by using a graphical user interface (GUI) module, so that the engineer can handle an issue by inputting some numbers and clicking some buttons.
Social implications
In a common sense manner, a numerical simulation method can decrease time and cost in manufacturing real samples. This PCB warpage method can also decrease product development duration and produce a new product earlier. Furthermore, PCB is a common component in all the electronic devices. So, this PCB warpage method can have various applications.
Originality/value
Because of an economic advantage, the development of a numerical simulation tool for estimating the thin PBA warpage behaviour during reflow process was attempted. The developed tool contains the features of detailed modeling for electronic components and contact boundary conditions of the supporting rails in the reflow oven.

It is generally recognised that companies spend approximately 50% of their marketing budget on promotional activities. Advertising belongs to the most visible areas of a company’s activity. Therefore, it should not be surprising that the average recipient associates marketing with advertising, competitions and leaflets about new promotions delivered to houses or offices. Advertising, especially Internet advertising, is one of the most effective forms of marketing and one of the fastest developing areas of business. New channels of communication are emerging all the time – the Internet, digital television, mobile telephony; accompanied by new forms, such as the so-called ambient media. Advertising benefits from the achievements of many fields of science, that is, psychology, sociology, statistics, medicine and economics. At the same time, it combines science and the arts – it requires both knowledge and intuition. Contemporary advertising has different forms and areas of activity; yet it is always closely linked with the operations of a company – it is a form of marketing communication.
The indices of marketing communication presented in this chapter are generally known and used not only by advertising agencies but also by the marketing departments of many organisations. Brand awareness, advertising scope and frequency, the penetration index or the response rate belong to the most widely used indices; others, like the conversion rate or the affinity index, will get increasingly more significant along with the process of professionalisation of the environment of marketing specialists in Poland and with increased pressure on measuring marketing activities. Marketing indices are used for not only planning activities, but also their evaluation; some of them, such as telemarketing, mailing and coupons, provide an extensive array of possibilities of performance evaluation.
