Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is simplification of some mathematical theories for the needs of school education.

Design/methodology/approach

This work is a result of long‐lasting regular observations of extra‐curriculum classes with primary school pupils. This research is based on some maxima given in a paper written by Zvonkin.

Findings

This work gives examples of simplified math models that satisfy the claimed concept, accompanied with the set of problems attainable for primary school pupils.

Originality/value

This work represents a set of criteria, with the guidance of which, any mathematician would be capable of creating a set of problems that would lead the pupils into the area of his research not as observers, but as participants.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the initial stages of a year to 18 month project to design and produce a peer designed video game for teenagers for use across Derbyshire Libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

The context is set with an overview of educational games focusing on the UK experience before examining both commercial off the shelf and bespoke games in schools, universities and libraries in the USA and UK.

Findings

The paper posits a specification it is believed will result in a game which is both educational and fun.

Originality/value

Describes the initial development of a peer designed game for young people.

Abstract

Describes why modern engineering plastics have supplanted or superseded traditional materials such as wood and metal in a wide range of applications and in particular in wear‐part or bearing applications. States that the most important factor in choosing plastic bearings is their ability to withstand wide variations in load over a long period of time, yet operate with very good reliability despite an unpredictable maintenance routine; the so called “fit and forget” ability. Discusses in depth the application of composite materials in the production of bearings for off‐shore and marine use including rudder bearings, steering gear support and stern tube bearings.

Abstract

Trade between Great Britain and the European Continent has been carried on for centuries but has developed most rapidly in the last hundred years or so consequent upon the construction of railways which facilitated the movement of passengers and goods to ports and upon the provision by the railways of cross‐channel steamer services. Transhipment at ports was necessary until 1918 when ferry ships carrying trains or wagons across the sea were introduced between Richborough and Calais by the War Department; these vessels began to operate a civil service between Harwich and Zeebrugge in 1924, but the facility was still confined to rail traffic.
