Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the corrosion inhibition of Methyl 2-(benzamido)-2-(4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl) acetate (MBPTA) and Methyl 2-(benzamido)-2-(4-p-tolyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl) acetate (MBTTA) in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 25 °C.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have used weight loss measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, FT-IR, quantum chemical calculations and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques.

Findings

The polarization measurements indicate that both compounds are mixed type inhibitors, and that MBTTA is more effective than MBPTA. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior using optimal concentration of MBTTA and MBPTA was studied in the temperature range 298-328 K. SEM was used to examine the morphology of the metal surface. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated and discussed. Monte Carlo simulations were applied to lookup for the most stalls configuration and adsorption energy for the interaction of inhibitors on Fe (1 1 1) interface. The difference in inhibition efficiencies between the two organic inhibitors can be clearly explained in terms of frontier molecular orbital theory.

Originality/value

The authors report on the comparative inhibiting effect of two new 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles, namely Methyl 2-(benzamido)-2-(4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl) acetate (MBPTA) and Methyl 2-(benzamido)-2-(4-p-tolyl-1H-1, 2, 3-triazol-1-yl) acetate (MBTTA) on mild steel corrosion in 1 M H2SO4 solution.

Abstract

Purpose

Surface pretreatment of iron and its alloys to remove stains and inorganic contaminants on the metal surface undergoes dissolution by virtue of the strong acidic media thereby increasing its susceptibility to corrosion. The purpose of this study is to explore the corrosion mitigation prospects of green corrosion inhibitors on mild steel surface.

Design/methodology/approach

Corrosion inhibition performance of Garcinia gummi-gutta leaf extract (GGLE) was explored against mild steel in 1 M HCl solution using the weight-loss method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) techniques. Surface characterization was carried out to study the mechanism of inhibitor action.

Findings

The concentration of GGLE varied from 100 to 6,000 ppm and the result indicates that corrosion inhibition efficiency was amplified by raising the inhibitor concentration. The maximum inhibition efficiency was 82.2% at 6,000 ppm concentration. EIS results show the development of a protective layer of inhibitor molecule over the metal surface and PDP demonstrates that the inhibitor operates as a mixed-type inhibitor. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were executed to assess the surface morphology and roughness, respectively.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, so far, no studies have been reported on the corrosion inhibition performance of GGLE which is rich in many bioactive components especially hydroxyl citric acid. This work encompasses the corrosion inhibition capability of GGLE against mild steel in an acidic medium.

Abstract

The inhibition effect of propargyl alcohol on the acidic corrosion of mild steel in 5 per cent commercial hydrochloric acid was studied at different temperatures by mass loss measurements and polarization studies. Corrosion potential and corrosion current have been calculated in the presence and in the absence of inhibitor. The inhibitor efficiency increases with increase in concentration and it decreases with rise in temperature. The interrelationship between the surface coverage and concentration of the inhibitor was also studied. It has been found that the inhibitor obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm.

Improved value for money, plus a written guarantee against corrosion for two years or 24,000 miles is offered to motorists buying the Bainbridge Challenger aluminised steel replacement exhaust system. Announced recently by specialist exhaust system suppliers Richard Bainbridge & Son Ltd. of Bolton, Lancashire, a TI Silencer Group company, the aluminised steel exhaust system is immediately available for eleven popular saloon cars. They are: BLMC Mini MkI/MkII; 1100/1300 range; Marina 1·3/1·8 litre models; Morris Minor 1000; Rover 2000; Hillman Avenger; Ford Cortina MkII 1300/1600 models and the Vauxhall Viva HB. The physical properties of two types of silicone resin were examined. The resin was coated on mild steel panels and allowed to cure for one week. The resin‐coated panels were heated according to ASTM specification D 2485. The thermal stability of the resin coatings was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The chemical resistance property of the resin coatings was also studied.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to measure peak temperatures and cooling rates for distinct locations of thermocouples in the butt weld joint of mild steel plates. For experimental measurement of peak temperatures, K-type thermocouples coupled with a data acquisition system were used at predetermined locations. Thereafter, Rosenthal’s analytical models for thin two-dimensional (2D) and thick three-dimensional (3D) plates were adopted to predict peak temperatures for different thermocouple positions. A finite element model (FEM) based on an advanced prescribed temperature approach was adopted to predict time-temperature history for predetermined locations of thermocouples.

Design/methodology/approach

Comparing experimental and Rosenthal analytical models (2D and 3D) findings show that predicted and measured peak temperatures are in close agreement, while cooling rates predicted by analytical models (2D, 3D) show significant variation from measured values. On the other hand, 3D FEM simulation predicted peak temperatures and cooling rates for different thermocouple positions are close to experimental findings.

Findings

The inclusion of filler metal during simulation of welding rightly replicates the real welding situation and improves outcomes of the analysis.

Originality/value

The present study is an original contribution to the field of welding technology.
