Abstract

At its Deeside plant in North Wales, Pilkington Micronics produces 0.4‐4mm glass panels for use in LCD and emissive displays for watches, calculators and laptop computers. The material for these panels is cut to size, ground and packed at Deeside. Describes the automation of the packing operations on three purpose‐built machines designed and developed by the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Institute (AMTRI). It was found that dedicated two‐axis electric drive gantry loaders most efficiently perform the process of stacking the glass sheets interleaved with special non‐contaminating paper. AMTRI was able to use experience with the first machine, which uses three gantries, to simplify the design of the second and third machines that use just one gantry each. The result is easier, with faster set‐ups, while maintaining the capability to meet the maximum cycle time set by Pilkington Micronics.

Abstract

While a printer may be the most important accessory in a personal computer system, it can also be the most annoying and disappointing part of a system. Printers can be noisy, difficult, and expensive. Their quality ranges from intolerably poor to better than typewriter output. Tastes and expectations for printed output have changed in recent years, making low‐cost printers more widely acceptable. Some of the issues involved in choosing and using a printer are discussed. A recent survey article is cited as a source of further information. Based on personal experience, the author describes and compares two low‐cost printers: the Star Micronics Gemini‐Wand Hewlett‐Packard's ThinkJet.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the extensive industrial applications of stagnation flow problems, the present work aims to investigate the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flow and heat transfer of a magnetite nanofluid (here Fe3O4–water nanofluid) impinging a flat porous plate under the effects of a non-uniform magnetic field and chemical reaction with variable reaction rate.

Design/methodology/approach

Similarity transformations are applied to reduce the governing partial differential equations with boundary conditions into a system of ordinary differential equations over a semi-infinite domain. The modified fourth-order Runge–Kutta method with the shooting technique which is developed for unbounded domains is conducted to give approximate solutions of the problem, which are then verified by results of other researchers, showing very good agreements.

Findings

The effects of the volume fraction of nanoparticles, permeability, magnetic field, chemical reaction and Schmidt number on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are examined and graphically illustrated. It was found that fluid velocity and temperature fields are affected strongly by the types of nanoparticles. Moreover, magnetic field and radiation have strong effects on velocity and temperature fields, fluid velocity increases and thickness of the velocity boundary layer decreases as magnetic parameter M increases. The results also showed that the thickness of the concentration boundary layer decreases with an increase in the Schmidt number, as well as an increase in the chemical reaction coefficient.

Research limitations/implications

The thermophysical properties of the magnetite nanofluid (Fe3O4–water nanofluid) in different conditions should be checked.

Practical implications

Stagnation flow of viscous fluid is important due to its vast industrial applications, such as the flows over the tips of rockets, aircrafts, submarines and oil ships. Moreover, nanofluid, a liquid containing a dispersion of sub-micronic solid particles (nanoparticles) with typical length of the order of 1-50 nm, showed abnormal convective heat transfer enhancement, which is remarkable.

Originality/value

The major novelty of the present work corresponds to utilization of a magnetite nanofluid (Fe3O4–water nanofluid) in a stagnation flow influenced by chemical reaction and magnetic field. It should be noted that in addition to a variable chemical reaction, the permeability is non-uniform, while the imposed magnetic field also varies along the sheet. These, all, make the present work rather original.

Abstract

City Link is one of the UK’s largest business‐to‐business courier companies. Founded in 1969, it pioneered the concept of same day and next morning delivery services. Describes the latest phase in the development of PC CLAN (City Link automated network), a PC‐based tracking and tracing system which was installed in the warehouses of City Link’s larger customers to improve the communication and monitoring of jobs between client and courier. Suggests that this latest phase in development is essentially electronic data exchange for parcels and that it may have a significant impact on the shaping of the parcel courier business.

Abstract

There's never been a better time to buy a PC, whether it's your first system, a replacement, or an addition. Values have improved enormously in the past year, and you can now get reasonably good values even from the traditionally high‐priced vendors. That doesn't mean you should automatically buy the best‐known brand. You'll still do much better by evaluating your needs, understanding what's important in a PC (and how to look for it), and looking over the marketplace carefully. If you're reading Library Hi Tech back‐to‐front, skip to Looking Back #1: it provides important background for this article. In this article the author discusses various aspects of PC purchasing in 1993, focusing on what matters now. He discusses the numbers that count, critical aspects of a system that are sometimes ignored in reviews, and the advantages and disadvantages of bundling. He offers some notes on brand names and suppliers, but cautions that completely safe purchases are nearly impossible. The article concludes with notes from the literature received between October and December 1992.
