Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the probable factors resulting in the lubrication failure in detail, based on the experimental study on the tribological property of the low-viscosity lubricant subjected to the different slide/roll ratios and loads under micro confined space.

Design/methodology/approach

The interference images and the traction coefficients of the spindle oil with low viscosity were recorded using a ball-on-disc test rig. Moreover, the corresponding flash temperatures were obtained via an analytical method.

Findings

More scratches can be observed in the interference images with higher slide/roll ratios. The applied load plays a significant role in the variation of the traction coefficient under different slide/roll ratio, and higher load resulted in lower traction coefficient. The flash temperature generated in the point contact zone non-linearly increases with increasing slide/roll ratio.

Originality/value

The flash temperature is not a crucial factor which results in these scratches in the interference images. Moreover, it is probable that the micro confined space is in boundary lubrication at higher shear rates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the drivers of new incubators’ business model. Several researchers have agreed that incubation is related to the early phase of a venture’s life and identified the incubators as organizations that support start-ups. But only recently has a new generation of incubators emerged.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an Italian incubator case study, the research results are mainly ascribable to the ability of the incubator to facilitate not only internal networking, but also external networking.

Findings

As described in the findings, the business model of the service incubator is founded on value-added services among networking within incubatees as well as between start-ups and external actors. The service incubator becomes a knowledge intermediary that allows new ventures to identify innovation parties and transform them into innovation partners.

Originality/value

The paper investigates the new business model of incubator founded on external networking orientation. Even if some researches analyzed incubators and cooperation within incubatees, less attention has been focussed on external networking and collaboration among incubators, incubatees, and several stakeholders. Based on such collaboration, incubatees can undertake new entrepreneurial measures, explore new markets, and innovate constantly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explain how sensory stimuli can influence environments, improve the shopper experience and change the nature of behaviour in ways beyond our consciousness.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviews research gathered over several years and it considers how significant increases in sales can be achieved by attention to shopper “sightlines” and movement through each retail space; how neuro‐imaging is starting to make sense of our reactions to products; how Virtual Reality can save money and how a well‐designed study is a cost‐effective means of ensuring environments are right for shoppers. The latest sensory approaches are also assessed together with thoughts to ponder for the next decade including a word of caution for all to ensure success does not come at the detriment of our planet.

Findings

The current economic gloom need not spell financial disaster for the retail sector. Consumers will simply become more discerning as they spend their limited resources. The savvy retailer will invest in understanding shopper needs and motivations to create an enhanced shopping experience by moving beyond simple POP displays and signage, where “minor plus est”, through to shoppers' sense of sound, sight, smell and touch which will have a clear impact on decision‐making, store choice and spend.

Originality/value

This paper will be of interest to all operating in the retail sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the residual test results under uni-axial compression of tie confined pre-damaged normal strength concrete short columns subjected to elevated temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

The test variables included temperature of exposure, spacing of transverse confining reinforcement and pre-damage level. An experimental program was designed and carried out involving testing of hoop confined concrete cylindrical specimens exposed to elevated temperatures ranging from room temperature to 900 °C.

Findings

The test results indicate that the residual strength, strain corresponding to the peak stress and the post-peak strains of confined concrete are not affected significantly up to an exposure temperature of 300 °C. However, the peak confined stress falls and the corresponding strain increase considerably in the temperature range of 600 to 900 °C. It is shown that an increase in the degree of confinement reinforcement results in an increased residual strength and deformability of pre-damaged confined concrete.

Research limitations/implications

It is applicable in finding the residual strength and strain of the pre-damaged confined concrete in uni-axial compression after exposure to elevated temperature.

Practical implications

The practical implications is that the test result is applicable in finding the residual strengths of pre-damaged confined concrete under uni-axial compression after exposure to elevated temperature.

Social implications

The main aim of the present investigation is to provide experimental data on the residual behaviour of pre-damaged confined concrete subjected to high temperatures.

Originality/value

The results of this study may be useful for developing the guidelines for designing the confinement reinforcement of reinforced concrete columns against the combined actions of earthquake and fire, as well as for designing the retrofitting schemes after these sequential disasters.

Abstract

Purpose

Detecting O2 gas in a confined space at room temperature is particularly important to monitor the work process of precision equipment. This study aims to propose a miniaturized, low-cost, mass-scale produced O2 sensor operating around 30°C.

Design/methodology/approach

The O2 sensor based on lanthanum fluoride (LaF3) solid electrolyte thin film was developed using MEMS technology. The principle of the sensor was a galvanic cell H2O, O2, Pt | LaF3 | Sn, SnF2 |, in which the Sn film was prepared by magnetron sputtering, and the LaF3 film was prepared by thermal resistance evaporation.

Findings

Through pretreatments, the sensor’s response signal to 40% oxygen concentration was enhanced from 1.9 mV to 46.0 mV at 30°C and 97.0% RH. Tests at temperatures from 30°C to 50°C and humidity from 32.4% RH to 97.0% RH indicated that the output electromotive force (EMF) has a linear relationship with the logarithm of the oxygen concentration. The sensitivity of the sensor increases with an increase in both humidity and temperature in the couple mode, and the EMF of the sensor follows well with the Nernst equation at different temperatures and humidity.

Practical implications

This research could be applied to monitor the oxygen concentration below 25% in confined spaces at room temperature safely without a power supply.

Originality/value

The relationship between temperature and humidity coupling and the response of the sensor was obtained. The nano-film material was integrated with the MEMS process. It is expected to be practically applied in the future.

Abstract

This paper describes some aspects of micro sensors developed as part of the micromachine project in Japan. This national R&D project, industrial science and technology frontier program “Micromachine technology”, was inaugurated in 1991 as a ten‐year project. The R&D goal is to establish technologies to realize micromachines for the following practical applications; maintenance and repair of power plant facilities; miniaturization of manufacturing facilities; medical diagnosis and treatment. As a result, various types of micro sensors have been successfully developed.

Abstract

Proposes the use of genetic algorithms to assist the development of turbulence models. A variable Schmidt number model for scalar mixing in jet‐in‐crossflows was developed through theoretical analyses. A uniform micro genetic algorithm is implemented to optimize the model. This is the first known application of the genetic algorithm (GA) technique to turbulence model development. Overall, the GA technique worked exceptionally well for this problem in a cost‐effective and time‐efficient manner. A set of experimental data on a single round jet issued into a confined crossflow is selected for calibration and optimization of the model constants using the uniform micro‐genetic optimization algorithm. Three sets of experimental data of jet‐in‐crossflows are used for the validation of the new model. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme of using the genetic algorithms to develop turbulence models produces very promising results.

The core goal of the “micro-foundational” agenda appears to be less an institutionalism founded in the micro, or reduced to the micro, and more some form of integrative institutionalism: that is, an institutionalism that does justice to the perpetual, co-constitutive interplay of local activities (the micro) and trans-local patterns (the macro). In this chapter, thus, the authors argue for a conscious, explicit embrace of integrative institutionalism; and of the broader agenda that this terminology opens up. Based on this overdue rewording the authors highlight additional problems and possibilities – providing a constructive reformulation and elaboration of the “micro-foundational” agenda as it currently stands.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to extant literature on socioeconomic transition in Central and Eastern Europe through using a spatial lens in order to address, at the level of individual experience, some of the changes that have affected Polish society post‐1989.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts Taylor and Spicer's three‐fold conceptualisation of organizational space as a framework to present and discuss qualitative data collected through interviews.

Findings

This paper finds that socioeconomic restructuring has brought about changes in space conceived of as distance, as materialisation of power relations and as experience. In the narratives of research participants, present experience of space within the city they live and work in is related to their past experience and to their movement in the space. Different spaces are interconnected to form the individual's “mental map” of the city. The spatial dimension of postsocialist transition has an important impact upon the identities of individuals, and an analysis of narratives allows for gaining rich insights into the ambiguities and contradictions involved in evaluating its significance.

Research limitations/implications

An awareness of the link between the transformation of the city and social change contributes to the understanding of postsocialist transition.

Originality/value

By applying a spatial lens to analysis of the processes of social differentiation, as experienced at the micro‐level of individuals, this paper contributes to the literatures on organizational space and postsocialist transition.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a framework for understanding how millennial social media use preferences can help public administrators change their delivery ethos to foster meaningful micro-encounters in digital spaces to then create public value. Ideally, these micro-encounters encourage public values creation from both the user (government) and audience side. Traditional government social media use often is one-way push without much care for dialogue and discussion. This revised framework shifts that thinking from the social media creation phase, allowing public administrators to use the tools in a more creative way.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach to the paper is theoretical, meaning the theoretical framework brings together lines of scholarship that have previously run parallel: millennial social media use preferences, government social media, and public values creation.

Findings

The theoretical framework offers propositions for future inquiry. The framework shows how traditional public sector social media use fails when it comes to creating meaningful spaces for interaction, which ideally is the purpose of social media.

Practical implications

The framework offered herein can help practitioners change the way they set up and even currently use social media tools to engage with the public. Though the framework is based on millennial social media preferences, any generation can benefit from a more open, inclusive platform that strives to foster public values such as collaboration, dialogue and transparency.

Originality/value

The theoretical framework generated for this paper brings together usually separate literatures to create a more holistic picture of social media use for public administrators.
