Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential application of electron beam melting, as a layered manufacturing process, to fabricate dental coping of metal‐ceramic crown restoration using Ti6Al4V powder.

Design/methodology/approach

This experiment was conducted in two steps: shrinkage study to determine scale up factor for shrinkage compensation and parameter selection study, based on thickness, hardness, and surface roughness, to select process parameter of electron beam melting.

Findings

A promising result of fabricating metal coping of Ti6Al4V via electron beam melting was shown. Ti6Al4V coping was successfully fabricated, with an average thickness of 0.52 mm required for dental coping. Total average hardness of 333.35 HV that is comparable to casted Ti6Al4V with considerably high roughness of RSm of 382 μm.

Originality/value

The paper presents a novel application of electron beam melting to fabricate metal coping for metal‐ceramic crown restoration.

Abstract

States that over the last decade an increasing number of new buildings have become disfigured in the first few years of their use. Outlines a recent major study of this phenomenon and investigates the following areas: what premature staining is and what effects it can have; the mechanisms of the staining process; building features that commonly give rise to staining problems; strategies for remedial measures once staining has occurred. Presents unique yet practical solutions to this increasing problem and concludes that the key to avoiding staining is a detailed consideration of a broad range of issues at all stages of the design and construction process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply rapid prototyping (RP) philosophy as a technology transfer in industries to take its time and cost‐effective advantages for development of rapid tooling (RT).

Design/methodology/approach

Experimentations are performed for development of RT for sand casting, investment casting and plastic moulding applications.

Findings

This paper reports the procedures developed for manufacture of production tooling using RP. A cost/benefit model is developed to justify implementation of RP as a technology transfer in industries.

Research limitations/implications

The examples are limited to parts build by fused deposition modelling RP process. However, the concepts experimented may be applied for other RP processes.

Practical implications

RP has proved to be a cost‐effective and time‐efficient approach for development of RT, thereby ensuring possibility for technology transfer in casting as well as plastic industries.

Originality/value

This is the pioneer attempt towards quantifying RP benefits, in view of technology transfer. This paper presents original case studies and findings on the basis of experimentations performed in foundries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to simulate the temperature distribution during an electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) process based on a fully threaded tree (FTT) technique in various scales and to analyze the temperature variation with time in different regions of the part.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presented a revised model for the temperature simulation in the EBF3 process. The FTT technique was then adopted as an adaptive grid strategy in the simulation. Based on the simulation results, an analysis regarding the temperature distribution of a circular deposit and substrate was performed.

Findings

The FTT technique was successfully adopted in the simulation of the temperature field during the EBF3 process. The temperature bands and oscillating temperature curves appeared in the deposit and substrate.

Originality/value

The FTT technique was introduced into the numerical simulation of an additive manufacturing process. The efficiency of the process was improved, and the FTT technique was convenient for the 3D simulations and multi-pass deposits.

At the Royal Society of Health annual conference, no less a person than the editor of the B.M.A.'s “Family Doctor” publications, speaking of the failure of the anti‐smoking campaign, said we “had to accept that health education did not work”; viewing the difficulties in food hygiene, there are many enthusiasts in public health who must be thinking the same thing. Dr Trevor Weston said people read and believed what the health educationists propounded, but this did not make them change their behaviour. In the early days of its conception, too much was undoubtedly expected from health education. It was one of those plans and schemes, part of the bright, new world which emerged in the heady period which followed the carnage of the Great War; perhaps one form of expressing relief that at long last it was all over. It was a time for rebuilding—housing, nutritional and living standards; as the politicians of the day were saying, you cannot build democracy—hadn't the world just been made “safe for democracy?”—on an empty belly and life in a hovel. People knew little or nothing about health or how to safeguard it; health education seemed right and proper at this time. There were few such conceptions in France which had suffered appalling losses; the poilu who had survived wanted only to return to his fields and womenfolk, satisfied that Marianne would take revenge and exact massive retribution from the Boche!

Abstract

Numerical techniques and experimental methods for the electrical characterisation and design of large multilayer thick film circuit boards are discussed. The numerical techniques investigated here include the boundary element and finite element methods for the estimation of capacitance and inductance and the method of normal modes for the analysis of voltage crosstalk between coupled transmission lines. Three‐dimensional capacitance and inductance calculations are included for typical thick film signal line and power and ground grid plane configurations. Numerical results are compared with measured data obtained from carefully constructed test coupons. Electrical characteristics of several popular high speed logic families and their compatibility with multilayer thick film interconnects are discussed and guidelines for the design of large thick film circuit boards for high speed digital applications are presented.
