Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report the studies on the corrosion inhibition property of 4-amino-5-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (APTT) for the corrosion of 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite.

Design/methodology/approach

The corrosion behavior of 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite was studied at different temperatures in 0.5-M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution in the presence of APTT by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques. The effect of inhibitor concentration and temperature on the inhibitor effect of APTT was studied. The surface morphology of the metal surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The activation parameters for the corrosion of the composite and base alloy, as well as the thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of APTT on the composite and alloy surfaces, were calculated.

Findings

The inhibition efficiency of APTT increases with the increase in the concentration of the inhibitor and decreases with the increase in temperature. The adsorption of APTT on the composite was found to be through physisorption, obeying Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm. APTT acts as a mixed inhibitor with predominant cathodic action on the composite.

Practical implications

APTT can be used as an inhibitor for the corrosion of 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite in the NaOH medium.

Originality/value

This paper provides information regarding the corrosion inhibition property of APTT on 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite. An attempt was made to explain the mechanism of the inhibition action by APTT.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this review paper is to provide a review of the most recent advances in the field of manufacturing composite sandwich panels along with their advantages and limitations. The other purpose of this paper is to familiarize the researchers with the available developments in manufacturing sandwich structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The most recent research articles in the field of manufacturing various composite sandwich structures were reviewed. The review process started by categorizing the available sandwich manufacturing techniques into nine main categories according to the method of production and the equipment used. The review is followed by outlining some automatic production concepts toward composite sandwich automated manufacturing. A brief summary of the sandwich manufacturing techniques is given at the end of this article, with recommendations for future work.

Findings

It has been found that several composite sandwich manufacturing techniques were proposed in the literature. The diversity of the manufacturing techniques arises from the variety of the materials as well as the configurations of the final product. Additive manufacturing techniques represent the most recent trend in composite sandwich manufacturing.

Originality/value

This work is valuable for all researchers in the field of composite sandwich structures to keep up with the most recent advancements in this field. Furthermore, this review paper can be considered as a guideline for researchers who are intended to perform further research on composite sandwich structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to develop the forming methodology for FML laminates with complex shapes, based on aluminium and epoxy-glass composite.

Design/methodology/approach

The subject of research encompassed Al/GFRP fibre metal laminates. Autoclave process has been selected for FML profiles production. The manufacturing process was followed by quality analysis for laminates produced.

Findings

The achievement of high stability and dimensional tolerance of thin-walled FML laminates is ensured by developed technology. The values of selected sections angles are significantly limited as a result of forming of FML laminates through the components performing. Failure to adhere to technological recommendations and to high regime of developer technology may lead to the occurrence of defects in FML.

Practical implications

Thin-walled composite structures could be applied in light-weight constructions, such as aircraft structures, which must meet rigorous requirements with regard to operation under complex load. The development of this type of technology may contribute to increased importance of FML sections in research area and finally to increased scope of their applications.

Originality/value

The production of thin-walled FML profiles with complex geometry, which would be characterized by dimensional stability and repeatable structural quality free of defects, is associated with many problems. No studies have been published so far on an effective forming process for FML laminates with complex shapes. Developed methodology has been verified through quality evaluation of produced profiles by means of non-destructive and destructive methods. The development of this type of technology may contribute to increased importance of FML, e.g. in aerospace technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Aluminium metal matrix composite (AMMC) is most popular in various industrial applications such as aerospace, automobile, marine, sports and many others. In common practice, silicon carbide, aluminum oxides, magnesium oxide, graphene and carbon nano tubes are the major reinforcing elements to prepare the AMMC. The purpose of this paper is to develop AMMCs reinforce with eggshell (ES) and rice husk ash (RHA).

Design/methodology/approach

Stir casting process is used for preparation of AMMC. From past few years, more emphasis is given to prepare the AMMCs using agro waste such as rice husk and/or ES as reinforcing materials. In this method, after the Al-matrix material is melted; it is stirred vigorously to form vortex at the surface of the melt, and the reinforcement material is then introduced at the side of the vortex. Stir casting process is a vortex and vigorous method to prepare the AMMCs. First, aluminum alloy (AA3105) is melted in the furnace when metal is in semisolid form. Reinforcement, i.e. ES and RHA are preheated at temperature 220°C and 260°C, respectively.

Findings

The result of AMMC shows that the tensile strength and hardness increased by using 22.41% and 45.5%, respectively, at 4.75 Wt.% each reinforcement, i.e. ES and RHA, and 1% Cr. The toughness and ductility of metal matrix composite (MMCs) have decreased up to 23.31% and 19.23% respectively by using 1% Cr, 4.75 wt. % ES and by 4.75 wt. % RHA of composite material.

Originality/value

In this work, Cr, waste ES and RHA have been used to develop green MMC to support the green revolution as promoted/suggested by United Nations, thus reducing the environmental pollution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the conductivity and processability of polyaniline (PANI).

Design/methodology/approach

The study opted for synthesis of the conductive PANI/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film, co-doped with 5-sulphosalicylic acid and sulphuric acid. Using an electrochemical method, a small amount of silver (Ag) was electrodeposited on the film. The PVA/PANI and PVA/PANI/Ag composite films were characterised by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and infrared. The composite deposition mechanism of the composite film was investigated by cyclic voltammetry for the first time.

Findings

The conductivity of the optimum PVA/PANI composite film reached 21.2 S · cm−1.Then, a small amount of Ag was deposited on the PVA/PANI film, and the conductivity significantly increased by 1250 S · cm−1. Through appropriate degree of stretching, the conductivity of the films was enhanced. The results indicate that uniform PVA/PANI fibres and dendritic Ag can combine to form complete three-dimensional conductive networks that exhibit better conductivity and mechanical properties. The cyclic voltammetry curves reveal that the dedoping potential of PANI was more negative than the reduction potential of Ag. Therefore, the procedure for the deposition of Ag on the PANI/PVA composite film cannot decrease the conductivity.

Practical implications

This paper for the first time described and revealed the effective and practical synthesis approach and composite mechanism to prepare multi-types metal-conductive polymer composites and improve the conductivity of a conductive polymer with a less expense and one-step electrochemical method.

Originality/value

This paper first explored galvanostatic oxidation to synthesise a PANI composite film to resolve the processability and conductivity of PANI by co-doped with mixed acids and deposited Ag on film. Furthermore, for the first time, the composite mechanism of metal and conductive polymer was studied.

Abstract

Purpose

Mechanical properties are highly sensitive to the microstructure, and these are indirectly related to solidification parameters and processing conditions. AA7075 possesses lightweight and excellent properties as structural material which can be optimized with SiCp addition and a good fabrication technique.

Design/methodology/approach

7000 series aluminium alloys exhibit the highest mechanical properties. They are used for high-strength structural applications such as aircraft parts and sporting goods. The desirable properties of these alloys are: low density, high stiffness, specific strength, good wear resistance and creep resistance. The focus of this work is to investigate the microstructure of composites formed by the dispersion of silicon carbide particles (SiC) into AA7075 by stir casting processes. 7075 Al alloy is reinforced with 10 and 15 wt.% SiCp of size 10–20 µm by stir casting process. The composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis and electron probe microscopic analysis.

Findings

SiCp distribution and interaction with AA7075 matrix have been studied. AA7075/10 wt.%/SiCp (10–20 µm) and AA7075/15 wt.%/SiCp (10–20 µm) composites microstructure showed excellent SiCp distribution into AA7075 matrix. In addition, no evidence of secondary chemical reactions has been observed in X-ray diffraction and electron probe microscopic analysis.

Originality/value

Little experimental work has been reported so far about effect of addition of 10 and 15 wt.% SiCp of size (10–20 µm) on the microstructure of 7075 Al alloy fabricated by stir casting process. The present investigation has been carried out to study the microstructure and carry out XRD, DTA and EPMA analysis of 7075 Al alloy, 10 and 15 wt.% SiCp of size (10–20 µm) composite and detect the interfacial reactions with the objective to minimize the formation of Al4C3.

Abstract

Purpose

During the past years, numerous market segments have increasingly adopted additive manufacturing technologies for product development and complex parts design. Consequently, recent developments have expanded the technologies, materials and applications in support of emerging needs, in addition to improving current processes. The present work aims to propose and characterise a new technology that is based on selective formation of metal-polymer composites with low power source.

Design/methodology/approach

To develop this project, the authors have divided this work in three parts: material development, process feasibility and process optimisation. For the polymeric material development, investigation of metallic and composite materials assessed each material’s suitability for selective composite formation besides residual material removal. The primary focus was the evaluation of proposed process feasibility. The authors applied multivariable methods, where the main responses were line width, penetration depth, residual material removal feasibility, layer adherence strength, mechanical strength and dimensional deviation of resultant object. The laser trace speed, distance between formation lines and laser diameter were the main variables. Removal agent and polymeric material formulation were constants. In the last part of this work, the authors applied a multi-objective optimisation. The optimisation objectives minimized processing time and dimensional deviation while maximizing mechanical strength in xy direction and mechanical strength in z direction.

Findings

With respect to material development, the polymeric material tensile strength was found between 30 and 45 MPa at break. It was also seen that this material has low viscosity before polymerized (between 2 and 20 cP) essential for composite formation and complete material removal. In that way, the authors also identified that the residual material removal process was possible by redox reaction. In contrast with that the final object was marked by the polymer which covers the metallic matrix, protecting the object protects against chemical reactions. For the feasibility study, the authors identified the process windows for adherence between composite layers, demonstrating the process feasibility. The composite mechanical strength was shown to be between 120 and 135 MPa in xy direction and between 35 and 45 MPa in z direction. In addition, the authors have also evidenced that the geometrical dimensional distortion might vary until 5 mm, depending on process configuration. Despite that, the authors identified an optimised configuration that exposes the potential application of this new technology. As this work is still in a preliminary development stage, further studies are needed to be done to better understand the process and market segments wherein it might be applied.

Originality/value

This paper proposed a new and innovative additive manufacturing technology which is based on metal-polymer composites using low power source. Additionally, this work also described studies related to the investigation of concept feasibility and proposed process characterisation. The authors have focused on material development and studied the functional feasibility, which at the same time might be useful to the development of other additive manufacturing processes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the wear behaviors of aged metal matrix composites and of the as-cast Al-Si alloy by using a pin-on-disk wear testing machine at room temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

Hypoeutectic (Al-7Si) alloy reinforced with low volume fractions of SiC particles (SiCp) and graphite (Gr) particles were prepared by the stir-casting process. It was found that the addition of 9 Wt.% of SiCp and 3 Wt.% of Gr particles conferred a beneficial effect in reducing the wear rate of the composites.

Findings

The worn-out surfaces of the specimens were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the extensive micro cracking occurs on the surface of the Al-7Si alloy tested at lower loads. The growth of these microcracks finally led to the delamination of the base alloy surface. The reinforcements (SiCp and Gr) particles tended to reduce the extent of plastic deformation in the surface layer, thereby reducing extensively the occurrence of micro cracking in the composites.

Originality/value

From the results, it is revealed that the quantity of wear rate was less for aged specimens compared to the as-cast specimens. The worn-out surfaces were studied using electron dispersive spectroscopy, and wear debris was analyzed using SEM.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss changes to MIL-STD-1530C “Aircraft Structural Integrity Program” to account for the increased usage of composites in aircraft structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The evolution of the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program is presented and the five tasks that comprise the program are assessed for compatibility with composite aircraft structures.

Findings

This paper identifies a number of recommended changes to MIL-STD-1530C to ensure that the unique behaviour of composites is considered within the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program.

Originality/value

This paper recommends changes to MIL-STD-1530C to account for composite aircraft structures, thus providing assurance compatibility of the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program with composite materials.

Abstract

Purpose

Stainless-clad bimetallic steels (SCBS) are widely investigated in some extremely environmental applications areas, such as polar sailing area and tropical oil and gas platforms areas, because of their excellent anticorrosion performance and relatively lower production costs. However, the properties of SCBS, including the mechanical strength, weldability and the anticorrosion behavior, have a direct relation with the manufacturing process and can affect their practical applications. This paper aims to review the application and the properties requirements of SCBS in marine environments to promote the application of this new material in more fields.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the manufacturing process, welding and corrosion-resistant properties of SCBS were introduced systematically by reviewing the related literatures, and some results of the authors’ research group were also introduced briefly.

Findings

Different preparation methods, such as rolling composite, casting rolling composite, explosive composite, laser cladding and plasma arc cladding, as well as the process parameters, including the vacuum degree, rolling temperature, rolling reduction ratio, volume ratios of liquid to solid, explosive ratio and the heat treatment, influenced a lot on the properties of the SCBS through changing the interface microstructures. Otherwise, the variations in rolling temperature, pass, reduction and the grain size of clad steel also brought the dissimilarities of the mechanical properties, microhardness, bonding strength and toughness. Another two new processes, clad teeming method and interlayer explosive welding, deserve more attention because of their excellent microstructure control ability. The superior corrosion resistance of SCBS can alleviate the corrosion problem in the marine environment and prolong the service life of the equipment, but the phenomenon of galvanic corrosion should be noted as much as possible. The high dilution rate, welding process specifications and heat treatment can weaken the intergranular corrosion resistance in the weld area.

Originality/value

This paper summarizes the application of SCBS in marine environments and provides an overview and reference for the research of stainless-clad bimetallic steel.
