This real-life case is based on interviews that took place with Kate Rogan, the co-founder of Love Books, and other stakeholders associated with the small bookselling business that is based in the suburb of Melville in Johannesburg. It describes how Rogan’s past influenced how she saw and was open to the opportunity; and how, through passion, commitment, dedication and stakeholder management, she created a business that brought meaning to her and others’ lives. Rogan’s vast experience in editing, publishing and radio influenced how she evaluated the bookstore opportunity. For the past 11 years, she focused on building a loyal customer base through knowing her customers, staying on top of current industry and market trends and constantly thinking about how she could add value through minimal financial outlay. COVID-19 further complicated her thinking about how to traditionally market and sell books to her client base. As the case concludes, Rogan wonders how to build upon the foundations of her successful bookshop and grow profitability while remaining true to her and the business’s values.

The case allows students to consider the key enablers for assessing entrepreneurial opportunities and drivers of small business growth. Following discussion and analysis of the case, students should be able to: explore how cognitive dynamics affect an entrepreneur’s evaluation of opportunities; analyze the case against the 4Cs (continuity, community, connection and command) of competitive business advantage; evaluate building blocks for sustainable business profitability; and assess and recommend different learnings for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

This paper explores the workforce development issues that arose in the course of an Australian repeat pilot study. The aim of the pilot study was to introduce, within a different setting, a planned approach to the assessment of, and interventions in, emotional states of service users that may lead to episodes of behavioural disturbance within psychiatric units. The pilot study necessitated training of staff in the use of an assessment tool. During the course of the study, a novel element was encountered with regard to staff understanding of service user involvement in treatment. This element, presented here as 'integral self‐intervention', emerged in conjunction with the development of two wall charts: an acute arousal management process chart for staff, and a patient safety chart for service users. The paper will outline the collaborative process towards the partial realisation of this element of integral self‐intervention, and associated workforce development issues.

MANCHESTER, like most of our provincial cities, is undergoing a transformation as its grimy Victorian buildings crumble beneath the demolition squads. In their place rise faceless blocks of offices and shops, whose glass and concrete soon lose their early gleam and smoothness and become streaked and shabby. They do not mature with the same charm as the brickwork and the carved and moulded stonework of the buildings they replace, for in spite of its reputation for ugliness and the accepted view of a drab city of umbrella‐carrying citizens and shawl‐clad and clog‐footed millworkers, there was an aura of romance about the older Manchester, something that prompted a man who was not a native of the city, Howard Spring, to write:

THE Annual Meeting of the Library Association will have taken place before our nest issue is published, so, with three weeks still ahead, comment upon it here is necessary. As Mr. Berwick Sayers's reminiscent article on another page shows, it is the third conference to be held at Brighton and judging from the success the first two achieved the third should be as good. Brighton has a particularly tonic effect on its visitors which is often reflected in the debates. The subjects to be dealt with concern the aftermath in the main and are in good hands. A novelty is a paper on the first day. It is to be by Mr. T. E. Callender on the uses in libraries of punched cards; we mention this as mechanization will come in librarianship as in accountancy. All the details of the other papers have not reached us yet, which is a pity as members should always know early exactly why they confer and about what. There are, however, the difficulties of getting the papers from their writers, and the speed of publishing—need we say it?—is not what it was. There are also difficulties which exclude more excursions. Not all desire them, however, and Brighton affords as many means of diversion as members are likely to find time to enjoy.

THE Wanstead Library is just round the corner from the shopping centre in the High Street where the old shop branch existed for many years. The new Library is a large, single‐storey structure with floor to ceiling windows facing Christchurch Green, a charming open space with well established trees. This spacious, attractive building is in complete contrast to the cramped accommodation previously occupied and local reaction has been emphatically favourable.
