Abstract

Lanolin‐impregnated tapes Whilst many thousands of tons of lanolin compositions have been used in rust preventives applied thinly by brushing, spraying or dipping for application in corrosive conditions, thick films are essential and therefore an improved method of application in thicker tape form is desirable. This has been acquired by Merseyside Anti‐Corrosion Services, of Aintree, Liverpool, by impregnating and coating cotton or glass fabric which is applied spirally in the case of tubes and longitudinally in the case of structural steelwork, all overlaps being hermetically sealed by the simple process of smoothing over with the hands. In this form it is finding a growing use in industry not only for transit or storage protection on bright or bearing surfaces of machines and parts but also on pipes, conduits, tank exteriors, ducting, etc., in situations where corrosion is particularly heavy.

Abstract

This article provides a summary of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) work over recent years to address occupational exposure to particulates during the manufacture and use of coating powders. It contends, in particular, that many users of coating powders are not controlling exposure to total inhalable particulate (TIP) (i.e. the total inhalable dust in the air from all sources), and that these control issues would exist even if TGIC (triglycidyl isocyanurate) was not being used. TGIC is a curing agent for polyester coating powders which is classified as a Category 2 mutagen. HSE is raising awareness that control of exposure is generally poor whatever powders are being used.

Abstract

Simple to apply anti‐corrosive coating. The introduction of Polyform makes the necessity for specialist anti‐corrosive contractors, who fit resin systems with expensive plant and machinery, obsolete it is claimed. Polyform, manufactured by M W (Polymer Products) Ltd is a new formulation of materials which can be applied as an anti‐corrosive coat‐ing, in a single layer up to 50mm thick, even on a vertical surface, without slumping. Applied with a simple spatula, no specialist equipment or fitting skills are necessary, indeed the pipework or plant that is to be coated need not be removed or production stopped whilst the coating operation is carried out.
