Abstract
Purpose
Flipped classroom (FC) is a potential approach that encourages active learning and enhances student performance while reducing the failure rate in education. This study was carried out to present the conceptual model of FC adoption by students in higher education.
Design/methodology/approach
This was a cross-sectional study in which 110 medical students from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran, were selected by convenience sampling methods as the sample population. An extended technology acceptance model (TAM) was applied to determine the students’ intention concerning the FC adoption. A research-based questionnaire, the validity and reliability of which have been approved, was used as the data collection instrument. The data was analyzed by SPSS v16, IBM. Correlation and regression methods have been used in the empirical study. Finally, the authorized model was presented.
Findings
The data show that subjective norms and perceived enjoyment have a direct and significant effect on perceived usefulness of the FC approach (ß = 0.32, P-value < 0.05), (ß = 0.7, P-value < 0.01). Also, we found that perceived usefulness (ß = 0.67, P-value < 0.01), perceived ease of use (ß = 0.51, P-value < 0.01) and self-efficacy (ß = 0.43, P-value < 0.01) have a direct and significant effect on FC adoption.
Practical implications
This study extended TAM and presented a validity model to elucidate student’s behavior concerning FC acceptance. Also, in this study, five determinant factors that affect successful adoption of FC have been clearly identified. The authors found that the new approach of learning such as FC should be an effective, attractive and enjoyable method.
Originality/value
The findings of this study should be considered when successful implementation of FC is in progress.

Purpose
To extend the work of Rob Kling, whose research interests, and advocacy were at the center of a movement in analytical inquiry and empirical research now known as “social informatics”.
Design/methodology/approach
Reviews the work of those who engage in social informatics research to strengthen and further the conceptual perspective, analytical approaches, and intellectual contributions of social informatics.
Findings
The vibrant and growing international community of active social informatics scholars has assembled a social informatics resource kit that includes: perspective lenses through which research data can be viewed critically; techniques for building theory and developing models from socially rich empirical data; and a common body of knowledge regarding the uses and effects of ICTs.
Originality/value
The paper identifies opportunities to engage new scholars in social informatics discussions, and suggests new venues for promoting and extending the work of scholars already enrolled in the social informatics movement.

Abstract
Purpose
This work shows the results of a systematic literature review on biomedical text mining. The purpose of this study is to identify the different text mining approaches used in different application areas of the biomedical domain, the common tools used and the challenges of biomedical text mining as compared to generic text mining algorithms. This study will be of value to biomedical researchers by allowing them to correlate text mining approaches to specific biomedical application areas. Implications for future research are also discussed.
Design/methodology/approach
The review was conducted following the principles of the Kitchenham method. A number of research questions were first formulated, followed by the definition of the search strategy. The papers were then selected based on a list of assessment criteria. Each of the papers were analyzed and information relevant to the research questions were extracted.
Findings
It was found that researchers have mostly harnessed data sources such as electronic health records, biomedical literature, social media and health-related forums. The most common text mining technique was natural language processing using tools such as MetaMap and Unstructured Information Management Architecture, alongside the use of medical terminologies such as Unified Medical Language System. The main application area was the detection of adverse drug events. Challenges identified included the need to deal with huge amounts of text, the heterogeneity of the different data sources, the duality of meaning of words in biomedical text and the amount of noise introduced mainly from social media and health-related forums.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, other reviews in this area have focused on either specific techniques, specific application areas or specific data sources. The results of this review will help researchers to correlate most relevant and recent advances in text mining approaches to specific biomedical application areas by providing an up-to-date and holistic view of work done in this research area. The use of emerging text mining techniques has great potential to spur the development of innovative applications, thus considerably impacting on the advancement of biomedical research.

Purpose
Applying cloud computing (CC) in education is a great opportunity to globalize knowledge with the minimum costs and maximum accessibility. This study aims to understand and predict teacher intention to use cloud commuting as infrastructure in Smart education.
Design/methodology/approach
This was a cross-sectional study in which faculty members’ perception concerning CC services adoption in education were assessed based on the extended model of theory of planned behavior, by researcher-developed questionnaire (a = 0.9). Collected data were analyzed by regression analysis and the final model was tested by structural equation modeling.
Findings
Attitude towards the behavior, perceived behavior control and privacy; had direct and significant associations with faculty members’ intention to use CC. However, subjective norms (p = 0.311) and security (p = 0.505 ) were not significant predictors of intention to use CC.
Originality/value
The results of this study elucidate the critical factors associated with teacher’s behavioral intentions toward CC services and also serve as a valuable reference for education sector to plan for the better use of these services. The presented model can be considered as best practice framework for adapting cloud commuting as infrastructure in education. Applying CC services in education is great opportunity and should be subsequently the major concern of educational organizations. This study clearly identified significant and non-significant factors that should be considered when successful implementation on could computing services is in progress.

There are few veterinary libraries or information centres in sub‐Saharan Africa, on average one to two per country. This scarcity makes cooperation all the more vital. For successful cooperation, effective communication structures are a prerequisite. These structures are not only necessary for library staff but for the faculty members they serve as well, in their communication with colleagues in related research fields or veterinary extension projects. (1) The steps taken by the Veterinary Science Library of the University of Pretoria to promote electronic communication in particular, in order to render a more effective information service to its clients and others beyond South Africa's borders are described namely: — the use of the Internet listserv VETLIB‐L; — the use of the non‐university networks SANGONET and HealthLink mainly for community outreach projects; — making the University of Pretoria Academic Information Service's own network, ROMINFO, available to non‐university persons via dial‐in facilities; — the creation of a unique electronic forum facility by the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Library in conjunction with the CSIR's NIBS, called VETAFRICA, mainly for practising veterinarians needing information. (2) Veterinary lecturer involvement in teaching and research is increasingly dependent on Veterinary Computer‐Mediated Communications (VC‐MC), in Africa and globally. A sampling of some of the dynamically expanding information sources globally available to online veterinary teams and animal health workers, as well as a starter list of contact details of currently available online veterinary faculties, libraries and institutions in Southern Africa, is provided.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the contribution of medical information systems (IS) to efficient use of information when diagnosing chest pain complaints with suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI) as regards ordering of tests and accuracy of diagnosis.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 102 physicians were asked to diagnose three cases of chest pain in patients consulting an emergency department (ED) in a simulation study. Half of the participants had access to a medical IS with complete patient information and the other half of the physicians did not.
Findings
It was found that participants who viewed the medical IS ordered fewer clinical examinations. Participants who viewed the medical histories made a more accurate main differential diagnosis (DD) of AMI. Physicians with access to the medical history reported significantly higher levels of confidence in their decisions, regardless of seniority.
Originality/value
The findings suggest that IS leads to better utilization of medical services, greater efficiency and lower costs and thus has implications for other healthcare sectors.
