Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the impact of the introduction of the 2004 bank capital requirements on the quoted stock prices on the Nigerian stock market.

Design/methodology/approach

Using monthly data over the period January 1986 to December 2006, residual analysis methodology was used to investigate stock price reaction to the 2004 bank capital requirements on the Nigerian stock market.

Findings

The results show that the introduction of the 2004 bank capital requirements has a positive impact on quoted securities on the Nigerian stock market. This is reflected in positive abnormal returns from the Nigerian stock market when trading is based on the information from the 2004 bank capital requirements. The results are unaffected by the choice of model. This lends support for the work of Olowe that the Nigerian stock market is inefficient in the semi‐strong form.

Originality/value

This study provides evidence on the stock price reaction to the introduction of the 2004 bank capital requirements on the Nigerian stock market. The result will have implications for the semi‐strong form efficiency of the Nigerian stock market.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of dividend announcements on the stock return of Shariah-compliant and conventional stocks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of dividend announcements on the stock return of Shariah-compliant and conventional stocks.

Design/methodology/approach

An event study methodology is applied to study the beta anomaly. Market-adjusted return model, mean-adjusted return model and market model have been applied to calculate excess returns. Estimation period used in this study is 130 days, and event period consists of 21 days in total, i.e. starting from the day –10 “before the cash dividend announcement” to day +10 “after the cash dividend announcements.

Findings

It has been concluded from the results that dividend plays an informational role in the Pakistan Stock Exchange. As the investors in Pakistan react favorably to the dividend increase announcements and unfavorably to the dividend decrease announcements, they consider dividend increase announcement as good news and dividend decrease announcement as bad news.

Practical implications

The findings of this study have several implications for different participants of the stock market, such as investors, academicians, researchers, fund managers and policymakers. They can use this information to make decisions while making efficient portfolios. Investors may get abnormal returns by focusing on the dividend announcement patterns. This can influence the attitude of investors toward efficient investments in the stock market and ultimately contribute to the betterment of society. This study is also beneficial for academicians and researchers, as it provides a comparative analysis of Shariah-compliant and conventional stocks and the anomalous effect of dividend announcements on stock return.

Originality/value

Limited research in the world’s context and null is available in Pakistani context on the subject matter. The comparative analysis of “Shariah-compliant” and “conventional” stocks provides insight into the asset pricing of Shariah-compliant stocks that have not been explored earlier. This study also uses three different methods (mean model, market model and market-adjusted return models) to compare Shariah-compliant and conventional stocks

The purpose of this paper is to study whether mergers and acquisitions (M&As) create value in Indian and Chinese markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study whether mergers and acquisitions (M&As) create value in Indian and Chinese markets.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors study abnormal returns (AR) created by the acquiring firms in Indian and Chinese markets relating to M&A announcements, using the following three different statistical methods: i.e. mean, market and ordinary least squares adjusted return models.

Findings

On average, M&A announcements do not create value for the firms in Chinese and Indian economies. For the mean model, M&As create value for Chinese firms, whereas for the Indian firms no such value is created for the same event windows. The regression results showed that debt has a positive impact on the AR and cumulative average abnormal returns at 1, 5 and 10 per cent significance levels, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

This study suggests increasing the sample size and period and using the instrumental variables regression to ensure the estimator’s impartiality, consistency and efficiency. With the investigative period surrounding a financial crisis, the estimators may have omitted bias.

Originality/value

Multiple methods used in this paper made it possible to capture the level of method variance in the AR, which is unusual in the Chinese and Indian context. Hence, the current study provides local knowledge and further strengthens the literature about M&As. The authors also regress AR with firm-specific factors, the consideration of which is scarce in the previous literature. Furthermore, much of what the authors know about M&A is relevant to developed economies.

Abstract

The global financial crisis (GFC) of 2007–2008 had far-reaching consequences for the global economy, triggering widespread economic turmoil. We use the event-study method to investigate whether investors priced the effect of significant events before the Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy in European and Asia-Pacific banks. Abnormal returns on the event days range from −4.32% to 5.03% in Europe and −5.13% to 6.57% in Asia-Pacific countries. When Lehman Brothers went bankrupt on September 15, 2008, abnormal returns averaged the lowest at −4.32% in Europe and −5.13% in Asia-Pacific countries. The significant abnormal returns show that Lehman Brothers' collapse was a turning point, and investors paid attention to the precrisis events as warning signs of the oncoming crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to examine the long‐term abnormal returns of firms that have experienced chief executive officer (CEO) succession. According to Chief Executive magazine, directors rank CEO succession as the second most important issue their firms face, the first being strategic planning.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines 202 CEO succession announcements. It utilizes two returns‐generating models to calculate abnormal returns for two estimation windows of 200 trading days before and after the succession event.

Findings

The results support the theory first developed by Guest (1962) that succession is an adaptive event. Specifically, this study shows that firms that experience a CEO change have positive abnormal returns, suggesting that new CEOs raise the firm performance. Moreover, this study shows that firms that experience CEO change due to CEO retirement improve firm performance in the post‐succession period, whereas succession due to CEO sudden death or illness seems to have no direct effect on the long‐term performance of these firms. Finally, this study provides strong evidence that outside successions help firms raise performance more than inside successions.

Research limitations/implications

Like any empirical event‐study, the validity of the results depends on the absence of confounding events. Future research could be to explore the relationship between the information content of the CEO succession announcement and the market reaction.

Originality/value

This paper is believed to be the first attempt to empirically examine the relation between CEO turnover and long‐term firm performance through the analysis of the successor's origin and of the force initiating the change, by using an event study methodology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between uncertain political events and Pakistani Stock Markets from May 1999 to December 2011.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the mean-adjusted return model and event study methodology and by comparing the market efficiency between the two government style, i.e. autocratic and democratic, the authors determined that how uncertain political events are affecting Pakistani Stock Markets.

Findings

The empirical result shows that political events have an impact on the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) returns. Moreover, the paper derives from the results that the KSE is inefficient for a short span of time, after 15 days KSE absorbs the noisy information. The political situation in Pakistan was more stable in autocratic government structure than in democratic structure but it is difficult to state that the stock markets are more efficient in Autocracy because only few events took place during an autocratic regime and magnitude of events was not same in the autocratic and democratic government structure.

Originality/value

This study is unique in its nature as it examines the effect of multiple political events on stock market returns in Pakistan simultaneously and is expected to contribute significantly in the capital market literature of Pakistan in particular.

This study aspires to explore how the US stock market reacts to ISO 14001 certification announcements.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aspires to explore how the US stock market reacts to ISO 14001 certification announcements.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs an event‐study methodology on a sample of 140 announcements and matching control firms to study the impact of ISO 14001 certification announcements.

Findings

The results suggest that ISO 14001 certification announcements have a negative impact on stock performance. More importantly, they show that the shareholder wealth reduced due to these certifications announcements.

Research limitations/implications

This study focuses on short‐term stock market reaction. Future studies should consider the entire sample of ISO 14001‐certified firms within the USA and use certification date to evaluate short‐ as well as long‐term improvements in shareholder wealth.

Practical implications

The results suggest that firms will need to educate shareholders about their actions towards the betterment of the environment. Such coordinated communication will ensure that the ISO 14001 standard is highly regarded, widely adopted, and even requested by shareholders.

Originality/value

Past empirical studies indicate that certified environmental management systems help organizations to reduce waste and pollution, thereby ultimately resulting in superior environmental and economic performance. At the same time, given its focus on the process rather than performance outcomes, opponents criticize ISO 14001 suggesting that it is just a label for image building. Owing to this dilemma, it is pertinent to evaluate how shareholders perceive a firm's attainment of ISO 14001 certification announcements.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address a deficiency in the literature by exploring the impact of negative workplace safety announcements on firm performance. The authors analyze the issue from a corporate social responsibility perspective and explore ways supply chain managers can contribute to improve firm performance through the development of safe working environments.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing a sample of 227 negative workplace safety announcements, this paper explores the implications of negative workplace safety announcements on the stock price of a firm using event study methodology.

Findings

The authors find that negative workplace announcements are associated with an abnormal decrease in shareholder value. Furthermore, the authors find evidence that negative workplace safety announcements have a more pronounced negative effect on firm value in the present environment than in any previous time period.

Practical implications

Operations managers need to play leading roles in ensuring safe working environments. The results provide the support needed to acquire the financial resources necessary to mitigate exposure to unsafe working conditions.

Originality/value

This study explores the impact of negative workplace safety announcements on a firm’s stock performance. It is the first large-scale study to look at public announcements of workplace incidents and to explore the impact of such announcements in the context of time.

Abstract

One of the primary motives behind any strategic corporate decision is to maximise shareholder value. Strategic decisions for UK construction firms are made with the objective of maximising the wealth of the company's shareholders. This paper investigates the financial performance of UK construction companies, which have been involved in construction related mergers and acquisitions and examines the impact of merger announcements on acquiring firms' and target firms' stock performance in the UK construction industry. It also examines abnormal share returns throughout a period surrounding the announcement of both successful and unsuccessful acquisition and merger bids. The overall results indicate that related construction mergers create wealth for shareholders of the target firms.

Abstract

Purpose

The devastating acute COVID-19 epidemic crippled the global economy in 2020. Within a month of the COVID-19 epidemic, every industry saw its stock prices plummet the most. Ending the COVID-19 pandemic will need equitable access to safe and effective vaccinations. This study aims to look at the link between COVID-19 vaccination and the stock markets for health and pharmaceutical sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers used a mean-adjusted return model and event research approach to figure out how the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine affects health and pharmaceutical sector stock market returns.

Findings

The evidence-based outcome indicates that immunisation announcement affects health and pharmaceutical company returns. Furthermore, the study concludes that the health and pharmaceutical industry is inefficient for a short period of time, but after 41 days, the sector absorbs the noisy information.

Originality/value

Since the outbreak, the development of COVID-19 vaccines has been a key focus of shareholders and investors. This study is unique in that it investigates the effect of the first dosage of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination on equity returns in the health and pharmaceutical industries, and it is likely to make a substantial contribution to the capital market literature on event methodology.
