Abstract

The privatization of State Owned Enterprises (SOE) has significant implications for SOE stakeholders. However, the effects on stakeholders will vary depending on characteristics of the privatization process and the structure of the SOE. This paper identifies privatization process characteristics of wealth creation and wealth distribution, and describes SOE structures on a continuum between government corporation and government agency. The privatization effectiveness for stakeholders is discussed and examples provided for each classification of privatization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a dynamically balanced mechanism for cleaning unit used in agricultural thresher machine using a dynamically equivalent system of point masses.

Design/methodology/approach

The cleaning unit works on crank-rocker Grashof mechanism. This mechanism can be balanced by optimizing the inertial properties of each link. These properties are defined by the dynamic equivalent system of point masses. Parameters of these point masses define the shaking forces and moments. Hence, the multi-objective optimization problem with minimization of shaking forces and shaking moments is formulated by considering the point mass parameters as the design variables. The formulated optimization problem is solved using a posteriori approach-based algorithm i.e. the non-dominated sorting Jaya algorithm (NSJAYA) and a priori approach-based algorithms i.e. Jaya algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA) under suitable design constraints.

Findings

The mass, center of mass and inertias of each link are calculated using optimum design variables. These optimum parameters improve the dynamic performance of the cleaning unit. The optimal Pareto set for the balancing problem is measured and outlined in this paper. The designer can choose any solution from the set and balance any real planar mechanism.

Originality/value

The efficiency of the proposed approach is tested through the existing cleaning mechanism of the thresher machine. It is found that the NSJAYA is computationally more efficient than the GA and Jaya algorithm. ADAMS software is used for the simulation of the mechanism.

It is observed that the Jaya algorithm is computationally more efficient than the GA. The dynamic analysis of the proposed mechanism is simulated using ADAMS software.

Abstract

A numerical study is performed to investigate flow instability phenomena in a square channel with steady, laminar throughflow. The channel rotates around an axis perpendicular to the channel longitudinal axis. The flow field extends from the channel entrance to a distance of 120 to 600Dh. The range of Reynolds number is Re = 300−2000. The inlet flow velocity is assumed uniform. Surface vorticity intensity is introduced to indicate the variation of vortices. It is revealed that at intermediate Reynolds numbers (680 > Re > 300), the flow is characterized by three vortex patterns: at slow rotation there is one vortex pair; at intermediate rotation a secondary vortex, in addition to the original vortex, emerges near the trailing wall and then breaks down downstream; and at rapid rotation the secondary vortex does not exist with the flow being restabilized to form a single‐pair vortex pattern. At low Reynolds numbers (Re ≤ 300), the flow exhibits a single‐pair vortex pattern, while at high Reynolds numbers (Re ≥ 680), the flow experiences the emergence and breakdown of a secondary vortex, but no restabilization is found with an increase in the rotational speed. It is also disclosed that the variation of the vortices is related to the distance from the inlet.

Abstract

Purpose

In this work, an SFEM is proposed for solving acoustic problems by redistributing the entries in the mass matrix to “tune” the balance between “stiffness” and “mass” of discrete equation systems, aiming to minimize the dispersion error. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This is done by simply shifting the four integration points’ locations when computing the entries of the mass matrix in the scheme of SFEM, while ensuring the mass conservation. The proposed method is devised for bilinear quadratic elements.

Findings

The balance between “stiffness” and “mass” of discrete equation systems is critically important in simulating wave propagation problems such as acoustics. A formula is also derived for possibly the best mass redistribution in terms of minimizing dispersion error reduction. Both theoretical and numerical examples demonstrate that the present method possesses distinct advantages compared with the conventional SFEM using the same quadrilateral mesh.

Originality/value

After introducing the mass-redistribution technique, the magnitude of the leading relative dispersion error (the quadratic term) of MR-SFEM is bounded by (5/8), which is much smaller than that of original SFEM models with traditional mass matrix (13/4) and consistence mass matrix (2). Owing to properly turning the balancing between stiffness and mass, the MR-SFEM achieves higher accuracy and much better natural eigenfrequencies prediction than the original SFEM does.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid urban population growth in Ethiopia is causing an increasing demand for urban land, which primarily tends to be supplied by expropriation of peri-urban land. The process of urban development in Ethiopia is largely criticized for forced displacement and disruption of the peri-urban local community. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to introduce how Ethiopia’s urban development system could be built on the participatory and inclusive approaches of land acquisition.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has employed questionnaire survey results, focus group discussion with panel of experts and previous research reports to examine the peri-urban situations and then to show why an alternative land development approach is needed to be introduced in the urban land development system of Ethiopia. Desk review on land readjustment was also made to explore best lessons from other countries applicable to the peri-urban contexts of Ethiopia.

Findings

This study has explored that land readjustment is potentially an appropriate land development tool to alleviate peri-urban land development limitations in Ethiopia.

Practical implications

Researchers, policy makers and government bodies that are interested in peri-urban land would appreciate and consider implementing the adapted land readjustment model as an alternative land development tool. Consequently, the local peri-urban landholders’ rights would be protected and maintained in the process of urbanization.

Originality/value

Although land readjustment has the potential to achieve participatory peri-urban land development, awareness of the method in the Ethiopian urban land development system is inadequate. This study contributes to fill this gap and create an insight into the basic conditions for the adaption of the tool.

Study of soil‐structure interaction effect in framed structures necessitates proper physical modelling of the structure, foundation and the soil mass. At the same time, the stress—strain model used for the constitutive relationship of the soil mass must also be realistic. In the present study, a hyperbolic stress—strain model has been used to consider the soil non‐linearity. The interactive behaviour of a five storey, two bay plane frame has been studied in detail and the results are compared with those obtained from a conventional and a linear interactive analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to relate the four modes of coexistence of goal-orientated systems – conflict, hierarchy, the niche and cooperation – to static behavioral descriptions of social systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Analyzing the options for interactions of goal-orientated systems leads the four modes of coexistence. These show certain behavioral characteristics. Searching for these characteristics in selected behavioral descriptions in organizational theory, sociology, political science and system science allows relating them to certain modes.

Findings

In organizations, the four modes of coexistence show in general (Cameron and Quinn) and dyadic interaction patterns (Argyris). In sociology, they show in educational schemes preparing for specific modes (Bernstein) and in different exchange patterns (Polanyi). In political theory, the four modes of coexistence show in preferred policies of parties, in institutional development, in oligarch power politics (Winters) and in external policy. In system science, they show in problem solving strategies (Jackson) and “mindscapes” (Murayama).

Research limitations/implications

The analysis is restricted to static patterns leaving out dynamic developments, for example, in networks.

Practical implications

Together with previous investigations, the paper shows how behavioral descriptions ranging from psychology to politics correspond to the four modes of coexistence, and it suggests interrelations and alignments of the modes via various levels of societal organization.

Originality/value

The four modes of coexistence provide an unequivocal theoretical framework that allows finding parallels in behavioral descriptions ranging from psychology via sociology to politics.
