Abstract

Purpose

Mary Mackillop, the only Australian to have been declared a “saint” by the Roman Catholic Church, co-founded the Institute of the Sisters of St Joseph, a religious congregation established primarily to educate the poor. Prior to this, she taught at a Common School in Portland. While she was there, the headmaster was dismissed. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which the narrative accounts of the dismissal, as provided in the biographies of Mary, are supported by the documentary evidence. Contemporary records of the Board of Education indicate that Mary played a more active role in the dismissal than that suggested by her biographers.

Design/methodology/approach

Documentary evidence, particularly the records of the Board of Education, has been used to challenge the biographical accounts of Mary Mackillop’s involvement in an incident that occurred while she was a teacher at the Portland Common School.

Findings

It appears that the biographers, by omitting to consider the evidence available in the records of the Board of Education, have down-played Mary Mackillop’s involvement in the events that led to the dismissal of the head teacher at Portland.

Originality/value

This paper uses documentary evidence to challenge the account of the Portand incident, as provided in the biographies of Mary Mackillop.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite Australia’s history as an exemplary migrant nation, there are gaps in the literature and a lack of explicit conceptualisation of either “migrants” or “migration” in the Australian historiography of schooling. The purpose of this paper is to seek out traces of migration history that nevertheless exist in the historiography, despite the apparent silences.

Design/methodology/approach

Two foundational yet semi-forgotten twentieth-century historical monographs are re-interpreted to support a rethinking of the relationship between migration and settler colonialism in the history and historiography of Australian schooling.

Findings

These texts, from their different school system (state/Catholic) orientations, are, it is argued, replete with accounts of migration despite their apparent gaps, if read closely. Within them, nineteenth-century British migrants are represented as essentially entitled constituents of the protonation. This is a very different framing from twentieth century histories of migrants as minority or “other”.

Originality/value

Instead of an academic reading practice that dismisses and simply supersedes old work, this paper proposes that fresh engagements with texts from the past can yield new insights into the connections between migration, schooling and colonialism. It argues that the historiography of Australian schooling should not simply be expanded to include or encompass the stories of “migrants” within a “minority studies” framework, although there is plenty of useful work yet to be accomplished in that area, but should be re-examined as having been about migration all along.

Purpose

Commencing with publications in the 1970s, the purpose of this paper is to review the historical writing about Australian and New Zealand teachers over the past 50 years.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper incorporates men and women who led and taught in domestic spaces, per-school, primary, secondary and higher education. It is structured around publications in the ANZHES Journal and History of Education Review, and includes research published in other forums as appropriate. The literature review is selective rather than comprehensive.

Findings

Since the 1980s, the history of New Zealand and Australian teachers has mostly focussed on women educators in an increasing array of contexts, and incorporated various theoretical perspectives over time.

Originality/value

The paper highlights key themes and identifies potential directions for research into Australian and New Zealand teachers.

Abstract

Purpose – In light of the recent report on regulation by the CMO of England and Wales and the subsequent Department of Health White Paper, this paper aims to consider the nexus between revalidation, appraisal and clinical governance. It provides a summary of the history of revalidation in the UK and explores how revalidation is linked to annual appraisal. It further considers the implications of this relationship and its potential impact on clinical governance and practise. Design/methodology/approach – This is a policy review related to revalidation and appraisal including primary sources from the Department of Health, the GMC, Fifth report of the Shipman Inquiry and published journal articles. Findings – Local clinical governance will be a significant part of the route to re‐licensing for the vast majority of doctors working in the NHS and many of the larger private sector hospitals. Although it will be used for two different purposes, it is generally accepted that the information collected by doctors for their annual appraisal will also form the basis of evidence for revalidation. If appraisal is to be effective, robust and consistent, it is important that the clinical governance framework within which it operates is appropriately designed for its increased role within the regulatory system. Originality/value – This paper is a valuable summary and introduction to the concept of revalidation in the UK, its history and its impact on clinical governance and regulation. It provides a timely review and analysis of the proposed changes to clinical governance at the local, SHA level and the strengthened connection between consultant appraisal and revalidation, contained in both the Department of Health White Paper – Trust, Assurance and Safety and the report – Good Doctors, Safer Patients, by the Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales.

Librarians can look back over 1920 with a certain amount of satisfaction. The year was fruitful in hope, in effort, and in useful achievements. It was also marked by restraints which we believe to have been wholesome. They entered the year with the almost bewildering knowledge that the main problem of nearly seventy years—the problem of existence—has assumed another and simpler aspect. The library, so far as local government was concerned, had become something that could be developed to any extent that the local governing body might determine; and the public librarian was not without hope that the promised quickening of his special form of libraries would extend to other forms. He was fain to believe that any good which might come to any branch of the profession must in time be beneficial to other branches. There has not been time yet to test the matter. Meanwhile he obtained almost immediate relief from the vexatious debts and difficulties which beset his work.
