Abstract

Purpose

The article attempts to determine whether academic research in the area of finance has a direct link to the practitioners in the field.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used a survey of over 50 finance practitioners to ask their opinion on the relevance of academic finance journals to their respective jobs.

Findings

The results suggest that most business practitioners are more interested in proprietary research than in generally distributed academic research, the academic peer‐review process seems to reduce the interest of practitioners in academic research due to the time lag between the findings of research and their publication, and the statistical significance of academic research results does not interest practitioners as much as the immediate relevance of the research findings to their respective jobs.

Originality/value

A review of the literature suggests this might be one of the first papers to actually test the hypothesis that academic finance research has a direct transference to the finance industry.

• Develop an understanding of how to institutionalize a family business. • Define the dynamics of the family business decision-making process in emerging markets. • Assess the cultural differences between founders and successors in an emerging markets context. • Identify the role of intergenerational differences in deciding the future strategy of a family business in emerging markets.

Case overview/synopsis

This case addresses El Batraa Manufacturers for Chemicals and Paints S.A.E., a privately owned family business operating in the coloring paste industry in Egypt. The main dilemma of the case is the existence of different visions about the business between the old and new generations. Also, it addresses the importance of understanding family dynamics to resolve existing challenges. The necessity of having governance in a family business is highlighted, together with a clear succession plan to secure family unity and business sustainability. Sandra the main protagonist within the case is trying to arrive to a resolution that can guarantee a motivating environment for her to join the family business. Her main dilemma is whether to choose to join the family business, with all the existing challenges or not. Accordingly, she proposes some steps to make the family business more appealing.

Abstract

North Dakota has in place a telecommunications infrastructure that is advanced and active, given the state's rural nature and large pockets of low population communities. The state is criss‐crossed by fiber‐optic cables that link the majority of telephone central offices to each other and connect clusters of high schools with interactive video networking. Public television stations are available in most communities of the state. State government is among the leaders in the state in the rapid deployment of frame relay services. The frame relay network represents the newest generation of data communication facilities in North Dakota, replacing a statewide network of dedicated leased data circuits and X.25 packet switches. The frame relay system provides each user group on the network with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for data communications, which is transparent to other users on the network.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the history and development of transaction log analysis (TLA) in library and information science research. Organizing a literature review of the first twenty‐five years of TLA poses some challenges and requires some decisions. The primary organizing principle could be a strict chronology of the published research, the research questions addressed, the automated information retrieval (IR) systems that generated the data, the results gained, or even the researchers themselves. The group of active transaction log analyzers remains fairly small in number, and researchers who use transaction logs tend to use this method more than once, so tracing the development and refinement of individuals' uses of the methodology could provide insight into the progress of the method as a whole. For example, if we examine how researchers like W. David Penniman, John Tolle, Christine Borgman, Ray Larson, and Micheline Hancock‐Beaulieu have modified their own understandings and applications of the method over time, we may get an accurate sense of the development of all applications.

Abstract

A case study of the integration of information literacy into a psychology research course is presented. The process of integration began with developing learning outcomes, a four‐hour curriculum, exercises, and an assessment instrument, which were approved by the Psychology Department's undergraduate curriculum committee. Also emphasized is the ongoing exchange of expertise between liaison librarian and psychology faculty to enhance library‐related components in the design of the course. Difficulties in implementing the program are described, along with the use of outcome statistics to underscore the value of the partially implemented program. Librarians used data from student assessments to highlight the need for more intensive and extensive student training to meet learning objectives. The sometimes laborious process of academic negotiation is discussed, along with the resulting decision to develop a psychology literature tutorial through collaboration between a junior Psychology Department faculty member and a librarian.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine a week-long science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) project-based learning (PBL) activity that integrates a new educational technology and the engineering design process to teach middle and high school students the concepts involved in rotational physics. The technology and teaching method described in this paper can be applied to a wide variety of STEM content areas.

Design/methodology/approach

As an educational technology, the dynamic and interactive mathematical expressions (DIME) map system automatically generates an interactive, connected concept map of mathematically based concepts extracted from a portable document format textbook chapter. Over five days, students used DIME maps to engage in meaningful self-guided learning within the engineering design process and STEM PBL.

Findings

Using DIME maps within a STEM PBL activity, students explored the physics behind spinning objects, proposed multiple creative designs and built a variety of spinners to meet specified criteria and constraints.

Practical implications

STEM teachers can use DIME maps and STEM PBL to support their students in making connections between what they learn in the classroom and real-world scenarios.

Social implications

For any classroom with computers, tablets or phones and an internet connection, DIME maps are an accessible educational technology that provides an alternative representation of knowledge for learners who are underserved by traditional methods of instruction.

Originality/value

For STEM teachers and education researchers, the activity described in this paper uses advances in technology (DIME maps and slow-motion video capture on cell phones) and pedagogy (STEM PBL and the engineering design process) to enable students to engage in meaningful learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research study is to use a large sample of the US companies and investigate the impact of cash-to-cash cycle’s (C2C) length on company profitability and liquidity in present and future periods and also examine whether such impact is dependent upon firm size or industry type. The authors investigate the association between C2C length and return on equity (ROE), as well as liquidity ratios for current and future years using linear regression models. The authors further examine such association for separate industries and explore the effect of size on the primary associations investigated. Consistent with prior literature, this study documents that C2C length is negatively (positively) associated with current profitability (liquidity). The authors also find that there is a significant negative association between C2C length and future profitability extending up to three years, but only for firms in the manufacturing industry. This research study shows that C2C length affects a firm’s current financial performance and managers should view C2C management as an important strategic tool. However, the authors caution that C2C management is not a “one size fits all” strategy and managers in smaller firms should pay close attention to their C2C cycle. The authors also show that firms in manufacturing industry will specifically benefit financially over long-term from C2C management. This article complements existing literature that examines the impact of working capital management on a firm’s financial performance and extends the literature by examining such relationship for different industries and firm sizes. Although the authors include various factors (e.g., firm size, leverage, growth, industry, year, and past performance) in regressions to control for observable differences among firms, there might be other unobservable differences that may have an effect on the results documented.
