Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the accuracy of finite element method simulations for high voltage equipment featuring resistive field grading.

Design/methodology/approach

In such simulations, the order of the mesh used and the polynomial order of the ansatz functions are varied while maintaining mesh and simulation parameters. The resulting accuracy of the simulations is analyzed by an error convergence study which shows the relative errors against the number of degrees of freedom the computational time and the memory consumption.

Findings

Simulation results of simplified benchmark geometry and applications to large‐scale 3D high voltage equipment are presented herein.

Originality/value

The impact of the order of the mesh and the Ansatz functions are studied for realistic high voltage setups. The paper helps the user of simulation software to choose adequate simulation parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an analytical solution to the plane eddy current problem inside conductive bars with rectangular cross‐section.

Design/methodology/approach

Eddy currents inside conductive materials have been investigated for a very long time, using measurements and mathematical modelling. This paper provides an analytical solution to the plane eddy current problem inside conductive bars with rectangular cross‐section.

Findings

The paper's approach solves the given plane eddy current problem with the boundary integral equation method. The Helmholtz' equation for vector potential inside the rectangle is solved by separation. The solution is inserted into the remaining boundary integral equation for the exterior vector potential in the domain surrounding the conductor yielding a system of linear equations. Results match existing solutions.

Originality/value

The method discussed provides a new way to solve the EC problem and is slightly faster than the available commercial codes; yet, it is limited to rectangular bars of cross‐section.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims at proposing a uniform and demonstrative description of two well‐known and widely used approximations of slowly time‐varying electromagnetic fields, i.e. the electro‐quasistatic and the magneto‐quasistationary approximation to Maxwell's equations.

Design/methodology/approach

Under both approximations, the orders of magnitude of the relative errors of the dominant fields are analyzed by using three characteristic time constants. These time constants are determined by considering the material properties, the characteristic length scale and the characteristic time scale.

Findings

Limiting curves which show the domains of applicability of the two approximations are retrieved from the estimation of their relative errors. The relation between the domains of validity of the electro‐quasistatic and magneto‐quasistationary approximations was found and depicted in a combined diagram.

Research limitations/implications

The study is restricted to slowly time‐varying electromagnetic fields. Heuristic and local estimates based on local material properties were used for the analysis. Rigorous estimations of the errors (e.g. also considering the field problem's topology) of the magneto‐quasistationary approximation are already known in the literature. A rigorous estimation of the error of the electro‐quasistatic approximation is, therefore, suggested for future research.

Originality/value

The combined diagram showing the domains of validity of both approximations considered here in a uniform way is novel. It gives rise to an intuitive and easily accessible understanding of their applicability.

Abstract

The correct simulation and visualisation of textiles comprises many research fields such as mathematics, physics, materials science, and computer graphics. It consists of modelling the physical behaviour of textiles based on real data of garment patterns which have to be placed around an avatar. Therefore efficient numerical algorithms have to be developed to solve the appearing differential equations. Finally the obtained results are displayed photorealistically). The aim of the national research project "Virtual Try-On" consists in providing a prototype of a virtual try-on scenario in a real shop or the internet realizing cost-efficient made-tomeasure wear. In this article we present the whole process chain from the choice of clothes up to the final visualisation and the individual evaluation of fit.

Abstract

This chapter provides a summary of the closing plenary at the 2018 Alberta Institutions Conference in which four scholars – Markus Höllerer, Marc Schneiberg, Patricia Thornton, and Charlene Zietsma – shared their views on how we could once again put the macrofoundations of institutional theory more center-stage in institutional analysis. The first major theme emerging from the panel discussion pertains to the meaning of macrofoundations. While Schneiberg sees institutions as socio-cognitive infrastructures, Zietsma emphasizes their constitutive nature. Second, both Thornton and Höllerer caution that an exclusive focus on either the micro- or the macro-level might remain only partial, and call for more cross-level studies of institutions – and for understanding the micro and the macro as co-constitutive analytical categories. Finally, the panelists discuss how we could break academic silos in institutional analysis and strive for theoretical innovation through interdisciplinary studies, among other avenues.

Abstract

This double volume presents the state of the art in research on the microfoundations of institutions. In this introductory chapter, we develop an overview of where the emerging microfoundational agenda in institutional theory stands and in which direction it is moving. We discuss the questions of what microfoundations of institutions are, what the “micro” in microfoundations represents, why we use the plural form (microfoundations vs microfoundation), why microfoundations of institutions are needed, and how microfoundations can be studied. Specifically, we highlight that there are several traditions of microfoundational research, and we outline a cognitive, a communicative and a behavioral perspective. In addition, we explain that scholars tend to think of microfoundations in terms of an agency, levels, or mechanisms argument. We delineate key challenges and opportunities for future research and explain why we believe that the debate on microfoundations will become a defining element in the further development of institutional theory.

Abstract

Purpose

To propose trigonometric interpolation in combination with the sliding‐surface technique for modeling rotation in electrical machine models discretised by the finite integration technique (FIT).

Design/methodology/approach

Locked‐step, linear and trigonometric interpolation techniques are developed for coupling the stator and rotor model parts of an electrical machine model.

Findings

Linear and trigonometric interpolation should be preferred over the locked‐step approach. Three‐machine models with sliding‐surface coupling discretised by the FIT result in efficient and reliable models.

Originality/value

The introduction of sliding‐surface techniques in the FIT, the trigonometric interpolation used in combination, the application of the FIT for simulating electrical machines.

Abstract

A multimodal perspective highlights the importance of attending to the different modes, mostly verbal and visual, which organizations use when conveying messages. We complement this perspective by adding an additional layer, namely the medium through which messages appear. We suggest that organizations can fine-tune messages not only by playing with possible interactions across modes, but also across media. We build our reasoning around the communication of identity claims. Specifically, we are interested in how identity elements are referenced in verbal and visual modes of meaning making, and how these modes interrelate both with one another and with the respective channels of communication on which they appear. We propose that organizations differentially select identity elements across diverse media and draw on specific identity elements modally in their quest for legitimate distinctiveness. We propose three ways in which multimodal identity claims interact: intensifying, in which messages draw from the same theme to reinforce claims; complementing, in which messages complement each other to enhance meaning; and transposing, in which a dominant theme in one message is transposed into another theme elsewhere. We provide an illustration with identity claims made by single-malt Scotch whisky distilleries.

Abstract

This research explores two interconnected questions: (1) How do we approach stylistic features of multimodal rhetorical artifacts such as protest posters? (2) Do said artifacts designed for different purposes exhibit systematic stylistic differences? Drawing on Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic categorization, this study develops a framework for examining concision, one of the primary stylistic considerations for multimodal rhetorical artifacts such as protest posters. This paper illustrates the use of this framework by exploring the correlation between rhetorical purpose and concision in posters created and disseminated before and during the 2011–2012 Québécois student movement. This study fine-tunes our existing knowledge on multimodality with style sensitivity, and demonstrates how an economy-of-sign based semiotic approach could enrich the empirical examination of multimodal rhetorical artifacts by generating more controlled interpretations.

In this chapter, the authors weave together a set of ideas that lead us closer to a more general institutional theory – one that embraces multiple levels of analysis, including the micro-level. The authors build on the roots of micro-institutional thought – including phenomenological and ethnomethodological underpinnings – as well as very active, social-psychological research areas that address key mechanisms in institutionalization. Among these, the authors discuss the important roles of legitimacy, trust, social influence, and routines. There is great promise for micro-institutional inquiry to make an integral contribution to institutional theory by bringing processes and people back in.
