Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to derive tailor-made microtextures for elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) contacts under consideration of manufacturing possibilities.

Design/methodology/approach

Component tests were used for the evaluation of the influence of surface texturing on the friction behavior in the cam/tappet contact. Furthermore, the manufacturing possibilities and limitations of a combined μEDM and micro-coining process and the feasibility of integration into a forming process were studied. Finally, a methodology based on transient EHL simulations and a meta-model of optimal prognosis was exemplarily used for microtexture optimization.

Findings

It was found that surface texturing in EHL contacts with high amount of sliding is promising. Moreover, the combination of μEDM and micro coining and the integration into established production processes allow the manufacturing of microtextures with desirable structural parameters and sufficient accuracy.

Originality/value

This paper gives a holistic view on surface microtexturing over several phases of the product life cycle, from the design, over efficient manufacturing to application-related testing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss various aspects of the development of the places of apparitions and miraculous images, motives and behavioral characteristics of pilgrims coming to the miraculous places of the Virgin Mary in Lithuania.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews literature about miraculous events and presents miraculous places in Lithuania (apparition places of the Virgin Mary and sites of miraculous images). Various classifications are applied. Pilgrims ' motivation and behavioral aspects are analyzed based on the quantitative survey.

Findings

The research showed that the main motives of religious pilgrims visiting miraculous places were asking for God’s grace, health, expressing gratitude to Jesus or Virgin Mary as well as spiritual quest and renewal. These places attract pilgrims who want to solve different problems in their life or to recover from illnesses. Religious pilgrimage has different forms and rituals, and constitutes different models of the specific behavior. During the journey, pilgrims perform various religious practices such as praying, singing hymns, kissing the relics, etc. The grouping of devotional rituals performed during the pilgrimage and at the destination place is presented.

Originality/value

The paper is important to the researchers of pilgrimage and religious tourism. For the first time, miraculous places of Lithuania are analyzed in the broader international context. Classifications of the miraculous sites indicate various aspects of the development of these places. Motives and behavioral characteristics of pilgrims enable to better understand the multidimensional reality of religious pilgrimage.

Abstract

”Green Ox” was written specifically for a midterm exam in an MBA marketing management class. Rather than focus on one particular concept or issue (e.g., segmentation, product line depth), the case challenges students to develop a marketing strategy for a food and beverage manufacturer’s new line of sports beverages, which contain beneficial antioxidants. Focal decisions include choosing a segmentation scheme(s) and a specific target segment(s) and articulating a positioning statement(s) for the new product—all in light of market trends, customer information, and competitor positions. Students must also make recommendations regarding the product name, number of products in the line, and the price (including a break-even analysis). Distribution and promotion issues are downplayed, yet there is sufficient information to determine whether students’ recommendations on the larger issues account for the necessary integration of the 4Ps.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD) on firm performance and the moderating role of corporate governance on the CSRD–firm performance relationship of listed companies in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a panel data set comprising 841 firm-year observations for the period covering 2007-2016. Fixed effect regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between CSRD and firm performance, and the moderating role of corporate governance in the CSRD–firm performance relationship.

Findings

The results of the study show that there are positive performance implications for firms that engage in CSRD. Although this study finds no effect of board size on the CSRD–firm performance relationship, it provides a strong evidence of a positive effect of board independence on the CSR–firm performance relationship.

Practical implications

The study contributes to the understanding of CSRD–firm performance relationship by providing evidence of the moderating role of corporate governance. It is, therefore, recommended that a stronger regulation be put in place for CSR engagement and the disclosure of same in Nigeria as well as robust measures for the enforcement of corporate governance mechanisms because there are economic benefits to be derived.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the literature by providing up-to-date and original insights on the CSRD–firm performance relationship within a developing country context. It also uses an uncommon method of measuring CSRD, taking into account the institutional biases that may arise from other methods used in studies on developed countries.

This case is used in Darden’s “Digital Marketing” course elective. It explores the experience of a niche search firm whose founder attributed her ability to open her recruiting firm to LinkedIn and the new model of recruiting it created. LinkedIn Corporation had been one of the most successful companies in the digital media space, with more than 4,000 employees and a market capitalization of over $25.5 billion in August 2013. But few people knew how LinkedIn had grown and how it had become profitable. LinkedIn had multiple unique aspects to explore: its focus on professional--not simply personal--social interaction, the company’s B2B components, and also its marketing positioning from user experience to targeting and growth strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of large-area texture/slip surface, especially the area and position of large-area texture surface on journal bearing, and improve the tribological performances of journal bearing.

Design/methodology/approach

A modified texture/slip numerical boundary condition with double parameters is presented and is applied onto the region where surface textures locate to represent the impact of actual texture/slip surface. A phase change condition is used to analyze cavitation phenomena.

Findings

The global/cumulative texture effect can be represented by applying texture/slip condition onto the region where it locates. The area and position of texture/slip surface would significantly affect the cavitation and load-carrying capacity. Texture/slip surface would not affect the pressure and load-carrying capacity when it locates at cavitation zone. The effect of texture/slip surface on load-carrying capacity would be beneficial if it locates at the pressure rise region, but its effect would be adverse if it locates at the pressure drop region. Well-designed texture/slip surface can improve tribological performances.

Originality/value

The developed texture/slip boundary condition can be a suitable and useful tool to analyze the effect of large-area texture/slip surface and especially to optimize the area and position of large-area texture surface. This approach can be complementary to conventional approach which is used to analyze the influence of textures’ real configurations and parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this practice-oriented paper is to look at a recent, late-phase development in public administration (PA) reform in Romania, specifically the drafting of the recently adopted national Strategy on Strengthening the Efficiency of Public Administration (2014-2020). In particular, the paper focuses on the opportunities and limits of outsourcing the building of the vision underlying the strategy and the prioritization of strategic objectives. The article’s story is also placed in the broader context of agencification literature and, more specifically, the involvement of executive agencies in policymaking.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes the vision-building exercise, developed according to a script already tested in several sectoral strategy-making processes, and the objectives and procedure of the online participatory consultation by using an adapted real-time Delphi format (similarly tested in the recent past).

Findings

The paper reports on the ways in which the output of the visioning process and of online consultations may be used to enhance a strategic process already underway.

Originality/value

PA reform in post-communist countries has been among the most hotly debated, intensely pursued, yet seemingly elusive policy objectives of the transition and post-transition periods. Among pre-accession and then European Union (EU) member states, the need to get in and then to get involved in European policymaking provided some impetus for such reforms and also set substantial constraints, without however always adding much predictability or significantly streamlining the public sector. The paper contributes to this debate by proving an innovative method of devising a reform strategy by outsourcing the strategy-building process to an agency with the necessary know-how and experience.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to uncover the motivational tensions underlying mobile shopping (m-shopping) behaviours. The authors focus on consumer motivations and the pursuit of life end goals with respect to m-shopping.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the means-end chain theory, hard-laddering approach was used to elicit associations between attributes, consequences and values from 251 online participants. Content analysis was used to develop a hierarchical value map “mapping” these associations to uncover underlying values for m-shopping.

Findings

Mobile shoppers are motivated by their self-actualisation needs (self-focused) and/or social needs (other-focused). Participants’ response contradictions reflected internal complexities and ambivalences during their purchasing decisions. Decisions are based on their concerns around security, time, technological or financial.

Practical implications

This study provides managerial insights into retail marketing and strategies. Marketers should consider creating user-friendly applications by researching the customer journey experience, heightening security measures and ensuring that added-value offers are clearly communicated to meet consumers’ personal values and motivations.

Originality/value

The paper presents an original conceptual contribution of personal values related to m-shopping as desires for self-empowerment, altruism and relationships with others, self-fulfilment and hedonism and possible consumer internal conflicts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop and investigate a fast and accurate algorithm for the modeling of characteristic impedance of double-layer coaxial waveguides.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents the newly developed numerically stable analytical formula for calculation of the characteristic impedance of double-layer coaxial conductor and its elements such as resistance, inductance, capacitance and conductance per unit length. The formula contains modified scaled Bessel functions. The results of the developed analytical formula were compared with results obtained from the axis-symmetric 2D and 3D finite element method (FEM) simulations, using three different solvers.

Findings

The proposed method shows a good agreement between results obtained with the new fast and stable analytical model and particular FEM models, selected depending on frequency range. The relative difference between characteristic impedance calculated using the new analytical method and obtained from chosen FEM method for discussed frequency range is less than 0.1 per cent which proves the correctness of the new analytical formula. Noteworthy is the fact that the relative difference of the resistance computed using the developed analytical method and obtained with Maxwell FEM solver for the frequency in range from 1 Hz to 10 MHz is less than 0.01 per cent. The presented work shows that when the calculations are performed over wide frequency range, it is necessary to use more than one solver, especially when the wavelength is comparable with dimensions of the conductor. The computation time of the new analytical model is much shorter than the computation time of FEM.

Originality/value

An efficient, numerically stable algorithm for computation of characteristic impedance of a double-layer coaxial conductor (waveguide).
