Abstract
1986 heralds a period of significant change for SWALCAP, the Bristol‐based co‐operative, currently supplying centralised cataloguing and circulation systems to 23 Member libraries. Firstly, as of 1st January it ceases to be a consortium of libraries and becomes SWALCAP Library Services Ltd, a private company limited by shares: the shareholders are the existing members, or those of the membership who have elected to take shares in the new company. Secondly, the first quarter of 1986 will see the full launch of SWALCAP's local integrated library system which has been in development for the last 18 months. The first general public viewing is scheduled for the Bath Online Conference (see p.) in April. Development has been undertaken in conjunction with the System Working Group, comprising SWALCAP staff and representatives from member libraries, so that there has been a strong user input into the system design. Over the past few weeks, SWALCAP has been running a series of seminars to bring the members up to date with progress and to introduce them to those modules which are more or less fully developed, namely cataloguing, catalogue enquiry and circulation control. Public access and authority control will be available imminently, with acquisitions and serials control modules in the pipeline for 1986/87. The following pages take a look at the system to date as it has been shown to the SWALCAP membership. The account is, for the most part, based on a live demonstration of the system, with full system software and a database of 100,000 records; where simulations or other sources were used, this is made clear.

Abstract
The purpose of this literature review is to reorient empirical research on the causal links between corporate ecological sustainability (CES) and corporate financial performance (CFP). Toward this end, we summarize the findings of four meta-analyses (conducted between 2012 and 2016), which indicate that there is, on average, a small positive association between CES and CFP. In addition, these empirical associations seem to be contingent on the firm’s strategic approach with regard to ecological sustainability (e.g., proactive vs reactive approach) and on the operationalization of both constructs. We conclude that future research may benefit from an even more explicit, analytic shift to the circumstances under which it pays for firms to go green. The main research limitations we point out are model misspecifications, endogeneity, and problems in the measurement of both CES and CFP.

Abstract
The case is based on a real $25 million project at a major U.S.-based computer manufacturer. For confidentiality reasons the company has been disguised as A&D High Tech. The Web-based online ordering system project is required by sales and marketing for the fall holiday season. If the project misses this window, the firm will lose substantial market share to competitors. Part (B) takes place three months into the original project plan. The project manager has just been fired and the management challenge is to find out what is wrong with the project and recommend fixes. In addition, the scope of the project has changed: the VP of marketing has an additional promotional bundle requirement. A&D High Tech (A) examines how to create and analyze a project plan in Microsoft Project. In order to make the case manageable for students we reduced the size of the project, and corresponding number of resources, to approximately $1 million, but retained all of the features of the original project. Part (B) gives actual work done on each task three months into the project. Students must answer the management questions: Can the project be fixed and completed in time for the holiday season? Can the additional requirements be incorporated, and if so, what is the best approach? In order to answer these questions, earned value data can be extracted from Microsoft Project and analyzed. These data provide important insights into the root cause of problems with the project. The next step is to reduce the scope of the project and reassign resources. However, one must be aware that indiscriminately adding people can slow a project down, not speed it up. Finally, the additional promotional bundle requirement from the VP of marketing provides an important outsourcing management discussion. The case can also be taught using other project management software tools, such as Primavera.
The case teaches students how to analyze a project in trouble using Microsoft Project (or other project management software tool). More important, the case teaches prospective executives how to manage a project in trouble by first accurately diagnosing the problems, then reducing scope where necessary, and finally replanning the project with reallocated resources. In addition, students will learn the tradeoffs of outsourcing to highly specialized professionals vs. average contractors.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper provides an overview of research published in the innovation and operations management (IOM) literature on 15 methods for cost management in new product development, and it provides a comparison to an earlier review of the management accounting (MA) literature (Wouters & Morales, 2014).
Methodology/approach
This structured literature search covers papers published in 23 journals in IOM in the period 1990–2014.
Findings
The search yielded a sample of 208 unique papers with 275 results (one paper could refer to multiple cost management methods). The top 3 methods are modular design, component commonality, and product platforms, with 115 results (42%) together. In the MA literature, these three methods accounted for 29%, but target costing was the most researched cost management method by far (26%). Simulation is the most frequently used research method in the IOM literature, whereas this was averagely used in the MA literature; qualitative studies were the most frequently used research method in the MA literature, whereas this was averagely used in the IOM literature. We found a lot of papers presenting practical approaches or decision models as a further development of a particular cost management method, which is a clear difference from the MA literature.
Research limitations/implications
This review focused on the same cost management methods, and future research could also consider other cost management methods which are likely to be more important in the IOM literature compared to the MA literature. Future research could also investigate innovative cost management practices in more detail through longitudinal case studies.
Originality/value
This review of research on methods for cost management published outside the MA literature provides an overview for MA researchers. It highlights key differences between both literatures in their research of the same cost management methods.

Purpose
Knowledge organization (KO) content is central to educational programs of library and information science (LIS) and information and knowledge management (KM) programs. The components of information and KO have similar philosophies, theories, approaches, strategies and tools. LIS education programs have strong traditions of teaching KO. Fresh emphasis is noted on metadata, data mining, info-maps, knowledge maps, taxonomy, ontologies and other strategies for organizing an organization’s explicit and tacit knowledge. This paper aims to analyze how LIS schools have responded to the needs of developing competencies related to information and KO among its graduates.
Design/methodology/approach
This study analyzed the curricula of LIS accredited schools and leading schools in selected regions of the world based on the course titles presented on their websites.
Findings
This analysis provided an overall picture of the coverage of KO courses in LIS programs of 68 selected schools located in Southeast Asia, the Europe and accredited schools of North America.
Research limitations/implications
The paper is limited to the treatment of KO in 68 selected programs of LIS education.
Practical implications
Library and information education programs may benefit from the findings for incorporating needed content in KO coursework.
Originality/value
The study is ground-breaking as it addresses the needs of development of KO competencies among LIS professionals from the perspective of findings of a systematic study of the curricula of 68 schools.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the relationship between personality traits and the willingness to buy groceries online. Our research is based on research on consumer values regarding online grocery shopping (OGS), and the authors argue that customer values are aggregated states of personality traits. The authors, therefore, propose the predictive power of personality traits toward OGS usage adoption.
Design/methodology/approach
For a more thorough evaluation of the matter, the authors conducted an online administered questionnaire resulting in N = 678 valid responses and conducted structural equation modeling using IBM AMOS (Vers. 25).
Findings
The authors found that none of the five personality traits had a significant influence on the attitude toward OGS. However, subjective norm had strong influence on attitude, and both subjective norm and attitude were solid predictors of purchase intention for groceries online. Unsurprisingly, the attitude toward OGS was higher for consumer groups with prior experience. The results indicate a high relevance of peer groups in the decision-making process of buying groceries online and the crucial importance of the initial purchase.
Practical implications
Practitioners, therefore, may resort to marketing the strategies to peer groups and initial purchasing behavior and address the level of experience with the usage of OGS, as well as situational aspects. This may be facilitated by precisely targeted online marketing activities and marketing service strategy adaptations.
Originality/value
This is the first study to examine the influence of personality traits toward the willingness to conduct OGS with an emphasis on the lower overall adoption within Germany. The authors furthermore validate the predictive power of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) construct for the economically attractive market segment of OGS by adapting and enhancing the scope of previous research.

Purpose
In contrast with recent studies noting the necessity of library and information science (LIS) skills in digital library and repository projects, this study aims to examine the impact of metadata quality requirements on how LIS professionals apply their skills outside a library setting.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper reviews the concept of metadata quality and examines the implications of this for LIS professionals by reviewing the differences between the context of the library community and other relevant communities of practice.
Findings
The paper argues that, although much needed, LIS skills require contextualisation before application outside library settings.
Research limitations/implications
Many of the new opportunities for and settings of LIS skills are immature – consequently this analysis may date as the context of these settings mature. Current trends, however, suggest that it will not.
Practical implications
Training in LIS skills should take account of how they might apply differently outside libraries. Librarians co‐operating with colleagues outside the library should appreciate the potential metadata “compromises” they might have to make and why they are necessary.
Originality/value
The paper provides food for thought on the increasing number of LIS professionals working outside library settings.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to present and discuss the international library and information community’s initial responses to the coronavirus pandemic. It chronicles official statements from various library and information associations as they were released in real-time, thereby providing a contemporary and historical snapshot of the early stages of this global health crisis. The aim is to both historically and thematically contextualize these initial responses to help establish a foundation upon which to anchor, build, extend and analyze approaches to the pandemic as it unfolded (and indeed as it continues to unfold at the time of this writing in June 2020).
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing upon a qualitative documentary analysis of statements on COVID-19 released by various international library and information associations, this study provides a thematic analysis of these contemporary policies. Specifically, this thematic analysis was carried out to identify and illuminate major themes appearing within the statements. Further, a comparative thematic analysis was then undertaken to compare the themes across all statements to discover and determine convergences or divergences in content and coverage.
Findings
The formal statements released by these organizations feature and share many similar themes in their initial responses to COVID-19, including support for/solidarity with libraries; information provision; maintaining services; digital migration of services; workplace arrangements/concerns; contextual contingencies of libraries (diversity of kinds, circumstances and challenges); health concerns and proper/good hygiene; countering dis/misinformation; external collaborations with public health agencies; and partnerships with industry including publishers.
Research limitations/implications
Although this study’s purview is admittedly limited in size and scope – involving six, albeit major, library and information associations from mainly English speaking countries – it can be used as a foundation for further studies into how libraries and information centres in other English and non-English speaking countries responded to the coronavirus pandemic.
Practical implications
This study can help inform current, alternative, contingency or other future library responses geared towards or tailored for the coronavirus or other health-related crises. It can also be used as a baseline to track the trajectory of library responses and actions as they unfolded throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
Social implications
By providing the start of an account and analysis of the international library and information science (LIS) community’s initial responses, this study also contributes to the broader (ongoing) conversation about the coronavirus pandemic and intervenes in emerging historical examinations of this crisis. This study could be of interest to LIS scholars and practitioners, in addition to public health researchers, public policymakers, cultural studies academics and historians, interested in how different and intersectional efforts – in this case, the international LIS community – contributed and can contribute to this pandemic and other similar or parallel crises.
Originality/value
The international library and information community’s initial responses to this global health crisis are contextualized, thereby serving as a foundation upon which to anchor, build and extend other research on responses to the pandemic as it unfolded. Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate what metadata elements for access points currently exist to represent diverse library reading materials, either in libraries or from external sources, as well as what metadata elements for access points are currently not present but are necessary to represent diverse library reading materials.
Design/methodology/approach
A field scan of thirteen contemporary metadata schemas identified elements that might serve as potential access points regarding the diversity status of resource creators as well as topical or thematic content. Elements were semantically mapped using a metadata crosswalk to understand the intellectual and conceptual space of the elements. Element definitions and application of controlled vocabularies were also examined where possible to offer an additional context.
Findings
Metadata elements describing gender, occupation, geographic region, audience and age currently exist in many schemas and could potentially be used to offer access to diverse library materials. However, metadata elements necessary to represent racial, ethnic, national and cultural identity are currently not present in specific forms necessary for enabling resource access and collection assessment. The lack of distinct elements contributes to the implicit erasure of marginalized identities.
Originality/value
The search for metadata describing diversity is a first step toward enabling more systematic access to diverse library materials. The need for systematic description of diversity to make visible and promote diverse materials is highlighted in this paper. Though the subject of this paper is library organization systems and, for clarity, uses terms specific to the library profession, the issues present are relevant to all information professionals and knowledge organization systems.
