Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the effect of radical innovation and incremental innovation on the competitive advantage of Jordanian industrial companies and identify the moderating role of technological intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

For this study’s purposes, 303 questionnaires from employees of 30 manufacturing firms were analysed. Convergent validity and discriminant validity tests were performed through structural equation modelling in the Smart-PLS programme. Data reliability was confirmed. A bootstrapping technique was used to analyse the data. Multi-group analysis was performed to investigate the moderating role of technological intensity.

Findings

Empirical results showed that both radical innovation and incremental innovation explain 60.2% of the variance in competitive advantage and that both constructs have a statistically significant effect on competitive advantage. The results also revealed that the relationship between radical innovation and competitive advantage is modified through the high-tech industries. Meanwhile, the relationship between incremental innovation and competitive advantage is modified through the low-tech industries.

Research limitations/implications

This cross-sectional study provides a snapshot at a given moment in time, a methodological limitation that affects the generalization of its results and the results are limited to one country, Jordan.

Practical implications

This study promotes the idea of focusing on radical and incremental innovation to enhance competitive advantage in the Jordanian manufacturing sector and knowing the effect of technological intensity in this relationship.

Originality/value

This study has important implications for leaders in the Jordanian manufacturing sector in general, as the study highlights the importance of radical innovation and incremental innovation to enhance the competitive advantage, especially in light of the technological intensity in this sector, and thus, increase the innovative capabilities of this firms, which leads to an increase in the level of competitive advantage.

Abstract

Purpose

The current work sought to investigate the mediating effect of supply chain ambidexterity on the relationship between Industry 4.0 capabilities and operational performance of manufacturing firms in Jordan.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection was carried out through a survey with 253 respondents from manufacturing firms in Jordan through the first quarter in 2023. The quantitative approach and structural equation modeling (SEM) were applied to analyze the collected data. Dynamic capabilities view (DCV) theory was the adopted theoretical lens for this work.

Findings

The results demonstrated that Industry 4.0 capabilities positively and significantly affect exploration, exploitation and operational performance. In addition, the results confirmed that exploration and exploitation positively and significantly affect operational performance. Further, it is also found that exploration and exploitation in the supply chain positively and significantly mediate the relationship between Industry 4.0 capabilities and operational performance.

Originality/value

This study focuses on this gap to deepen the understanding of operational performance in a recent manufacturing environment under various factors and perspectives (Industry 4.0 capabilities and supply chain ambidexterity).

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the impact of big data analytics capabilities on green supply chain performance. Moreover, it assesses the mediating effect of the green innovation and moderating effect of technological intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on primary data that were collected from the food and beverages manufacturing sector operating in Jordan. A total of 420 samples were used for the final data analysis. Data analysis was performed via structural equation modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS 3.3.9.

Findings

The results of the data analysis supported a positive relationship between big data analytics capabilities and the green supply chain performance as well as a mediating effect of green innovation. It was confirmed that technological intensity moderated the relationship of green innovation on green supply chain performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study faced many limitations such as the method of collecting primary data, which relied on a questionnaire only and the use of cross-sectional data, as well as studying one context and in one country.

Practical implications

The findings can guide managers and policymakers in the Jordanian food and beverage manufacturing sector on how to manage organizational capabilities related to big data analytics to enhance green supply chain performance and improve green innovation in these firms.

Originality/value

This study developed a theoretical and empirical model to investigate the relationship between big data analytics capabilities, green innovation, technological intensity and green supply chain performance. This study offers new theoretical and managerial contributions that add value to the supply chain management and innovation literature by testing the moderated mediation model of these constructs in the food and beverages manufacturing sector in Jordan.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the impact of big data analytics capabilities on export performance. Moreover, it assesses the mediating effect of the supply chain innovation and moderating effect of supply chain agility.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on primary data that were collected from the manufacturing sector operating in Jordan. A total of 327 responses were used for the final data analysis. Data analysis was performed via a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach.

Findings

The results of the data analysis supported a positive relationship between big data analytics capabilities and the export performance as well as a mediating effect of supply chain innovation. It was confirmed that supply chain agility moderated the relationship of supply chain innovation and export performance.

Originality/value

This study developed a theoretical and empirical model to investigate the relationship between big data analytics capabilities, export performance, supply chain innovation and supply chain agility. This study offers new theoretical and managerial contributions that add value to the supply chain management literature by testing the moderated-mediated model of these constructs in the manufacturing sector in Jordan.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of big data analytics capabilities (BDAC) on green radical supply chain innovation (GRSCI), green incremental supply chain innovation (GISCI), and green supply chain performance (GSCP) in the context of a developing country, Jordan. In addition, the mediating effect of GRSCI and GISCI on the relationship between BDAC and GSCP is tested.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection is carried out through a survey with 303 respondents from manufacturing firms located in Jordan. Partial least squares-structural equation modelling approach is applied to analyse the collected data. Resource-based view and natural resource-based view theory form the adopted theoretical lens for this study.

Findings

The results reveal that BDAC positively and significantly affects GRSCI, GISCI, and GSCP. In addition, the results demonstrate that GRSCI and GISCI positively and significantly affect GSCP. Further, it is also found that GRSCI and GISCI positively and significantly mediate the relationship between BDAC and GSCP.

Originality/value

This study's author develops a theoretical and empirical model to investigate the relationship among BDAC, GRSCI, GISCI, and GSCP. This study offers new theoretical and managerial contributions that add value to the supply chain management literature by testing the mediation model in manufacturing firms located in Jordan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of supply chain integration (SCI) in terms of supplier, customer and internal integration on supply chain performance (SCP) and export performance (EXP). The effect of SCP on EXP is also explored. This study further seeks to examine the mediating effect of SCP on the relationship between the types of SCI and EXP.

Design/methodology/approach

The population of this study consists of manufacturing companies in different industries in Jordan. Data were gathered using self-administered questionnaires; managers from 271 companies responded to the survey. The study constructs were assessed for validity and reliability, and it was ensured that acceptable levels of these tests were obtained. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

The findings showed that supplier and customer integration were not drivers of EXP, but internal integration positively impacted EXP. In addition, internal and customer integration positively affected SCP, while supplier integration did not. Also, SCP positively impacted EXP. Furthermore, customer integration and internal integration indirectly impacted EXP through SCP.

Practical implications

Manufacturers should establish both intra- and inter-organizational collaborations to improve their performance. Specifically, managers in developing countries need to pay substantial attention to internal integration, as it is the key antecedent of both SCP and EXP. Furthermore, managers must be aware of the essential role of customer integration in improving SCP and subsequently EXP. Therefore, they should make long-term plans to integrate and incorporate key customers. In addition, managers are advised to reconsider their current relationships with suppliers. By failing to take advantage of the valuable expected contribution of supplier integration, manufacturers may lose export opportunities to international competitors.

Originality/value

The present study addresses an evident gap in the available literature regarding the effect of SCI on EXP. It tests a comprehensive model underlining the role of SCP on the relationship between SCI types and EXP. This study is also valuable because it was conducted in a developing country. Generally, manufacturing companies in developing countries face more SC-related difficulties than those in developed countries; these challenges can limit the export abilities of manufacturers in developing countries. The study offers important implications for the managers of manufacturing companies to improve their SCP and, subsequently enhance their EXP.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate hypothesized relationships between the Internet of things (IoT) and big data analytics (BDA) with supply chain visibility (SCV) and operational performance (OP) in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector in Jordan. The paper also aims to test the conceptual model related to the indirect effects of SCV.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the objectives of this paper, a conceptual model was developed through a review of the current literature. Data analysis was performed by covariance-based structural equation modelling using Amos 25 software, and the convergent validity, discriminant validity, reliability and confirmatory factor analysis were verified. Then the hypotheses were tested.

Findings

The results of the study indicate that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between the IoT and BDA on SCV and OP. The relationship was positive and statistically significant between SCV and OP. In addition, support for the mediation hypothesis that SCV mediates the relationship among IoT, BDA and OP was confirmed.

Originality/value

This paper provides new theoretical and managerial contributions that have not been covered in previous studies, and it is considered the first study that uses this conceptual model with this mechanism in terms of the theoretical lens and empirical application. This paper contributes to understanding the dynamic mechanisms of the IoT and BDA in enhancing OP, which contributes to creating a supply chain capable of facing various environmental fluctuations and pressures. This study presents new implications that can be used in the supply chain literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The current study aimed to identify the impact of the dynamic capabilities on the circular economy in Jordan's small- and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises sector as and the mediating role of industrial Internet of things.

Design/methodology/approach

This study surveyed small and medium manufacturing enterprises operating in Jordan and collected 459 responses through an online self-administered questionnaire. The effects of dynamic capabilities and the industrial Internet of things on the circular economy were analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM).

Findings

Empirical results showed that all hypotheses are accepted. The results also revealed that the relationship between dynamic capabilities (sensing, seizing and reconfiguring) on a circular economy is mediated by the industrial Internet of things.

Originality/value

This work expanded the application of the dynamic capabilities view to investigate the antecedent effects of the industrial Internet of things and the circular economy and deepened understanding of the dynamic capabilities view theory in assessing the dynamic activities of these firms based on the three dimensions of sensing, seizing and reconfiguring. In general, this study made a theoretical and managerial contribution to supply chain and circular economy literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study attempts to examine the relationship between reliable big and cloud data analytics capabilities (RB&CDACs) and comparative advantages (CA) of manufacturing firms (MFs) in the Middle East region as developing countries using green product innovation (GPI) and green process innovations (GPrI) mediating factors, further assess the role of data-driven competitive sustainability factor as a moderated factor.

Design/methodology/approach

436 useable online surveys were analyzed using the quantitative approach for the data-gathering process, applying structural equation modeling in the Smart-PLS program as an analysis tool. The sample unit for analysis included all middle- and senior-level managers and employees within MFs. The authors performed convergent validity and discriminant validity tests, bootstrapping also was applied. The authors included GPI and GPrI as mediating factors while using data-driven competitive sustainability as a moderated factor.

Findings

The findings of this study indicated that there is a positive significant effect in the relationship between reliable big and cloud data analytics capabilities and comparative advantages, which is supported by the formulated hypothesis. Furthermore, the findings confirmed that there was a positive and significant effect through the mediating factors (i.e. GPI and GPrI) on comparative advantage, additionally, it confirmed and supported that the moderating factor represented by data-driven competitive advantage suitability has significant effect as well.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations represented by using only one type of methodological approach (i.e. quantitative), further, it was conducted on only Asian countries in the Middle East region.

Originality/value

This piece of work improved the proposed conceptual research model and included several factors such as reliable big and cloud data analytics capabilities, comparative advantage, data-driven competitive sustainability, GPI and GPrI. This research offered new and valuable information and findings for managers, practitioners and decision-makers in the MFs in the Middle East region as a road map and gaudiness for the importance to apply these factors in their firms for enhancing the comparative advantages in their firms. Further, this research fills the gap in SCM literature and makes a bridge of knowledge and contribution to the existence of previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the authors investigate the effect of big data analytics capability (BDAC) on supply chain performance (SCP) to assess the mediating effect of supply chain innovation (SCI) and the moderating effect of a data-driven culture (DDC).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected the primary data through an online questionnaire survey from the manufacturing sector operating in Jordan. The authors used 420 samples for the final data analysis, which the authors performed via partial least squares structural equation modelling using SmartPLS 3.3.9 software.

Findings

The results indicate that BDAC has a strong relationship with SCI and SCP. SCI shows a positive relationship with SCP as well as a mediating effect on SCI. The authors confirmed that DDC moderated the relationship between SCI and SCP.

Originality/value

The authors developed a conceptual and empirical model to investigate the relationship between BDAC, SCI, DDC and SCP. The authors contributed new theoretical and managerial insights that add value to the supply chain management literature through testing the moderated-mediated model of these constructs in Jordan’s manufacturing sector.
