Abstract
Purpose
As an important engine of economic growth, the digital economy is bringing new opportunities for the promotion of entrepreneurship. However, key questions regarding the extent of the effect of the digital economy on entrepreneurship remain unanswered. This study examines how the digital economy influences entrepreneurship in China using provincial data from 2011–2020, applying convergence tests and spatial econometric models.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on theoretical analysis and using macro provincial data covering the period of 2011–2020, we adopt a diversified empirical analytical method and apply a combination of the convergence trend test, spatial auto correlation test, and spatial Durbin model to test the research hypotheses.
Findings
First, there is spatial correlation between the digital economy and entrepreneurship. Second, the overall trend of China’s digital economy shows s convergence, with the whole country and the eastern region showing absolute β convergence and the whole country as well as the central and western regions showing β conditional convergence. Third, the digital economy can significantly promote entrepreneurship and has spatial spillover effects. Moreover, higher education has a negative moderating effect on the process of digital economy empowering entrepreneurship.
Research limitations/implications
Studying the spatially correlated impacts of the digital economy on entrepreneurship enhances our understanding of its contribution to economic growth. Policy-makers can use these findings to develop targeted digital infrastructure investments in lagging provinces, guide entrepreneurs to better grasp the opportunities of the digital economy, and provide support for innovation and entrepreneurship. The findings also could offer Chinese experience that can be used to guide developing countries in utilizing the digital economy to enable entrepreneurship.
Originality/value
This paper expands and enriches the analytical focus on digital economy-empowered entrepreneurship and complements the current theoretical research on the moderating effect of the digital economy in empowering entrepreneurship.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine whether China's grain price support policy has distorted the grain market price.
Design/methodology/approach
The time-varying differences-in-differences (DID) model is used to study the impact of support policies on grain prices, and it is combined with the event study method to explore the dynamic effects of price support policy. Panel data model is used to study the effect of the price support policy on price formation for national grain market prices. In addition, we apply the smooth transformation (STR) model to verify whether there is a distortion in the transmission of grain prices among different markets in China and from the international market to China’s market.
Findings
China’s grain price support policy plays a significant role in rising grain market prices, weakens the decisive role of the market mechanism in the formation of grain prices, hinders the spatial transmission of market price signals and decreases the effect of price transmission from the world market to China’s market.
Research limitations/implications
In order to ensure both the stability of grain production as well as the market stability, and also to ensure that intervention policies do not distort the food market, the minimum purchase price of grain and market regulation policies should be adjusted as follows: (1) price support policy should be shifted to an income support policy and (2) reasonably determine the scale of reserves and implement a grain minimum purchase price policy in limited areas.
Originality/value
Our findings are relevant for understanding the effect of China's grain price support policies on the implementation regions and the price transmission effect, which provide reference experience for developing countries to implement food price policies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to reduce the destructive effects of existing unavoidable noises contaminating temperature data in inverse heat conduction problems (IHCP) utilizing the wavelets.
Design/methodology/approach
For noise reduction, sensor data were treated as input to the filter bank used for signal decomposition and implementation of discrete wavelet transform. This is followed by the application of wavelet denoising algorithm that is applied on the wavelet coefficients of signal components at different resolution levels. Both noisy and de‐noised measurement temperatures are then used as input data to a numerical experiment of IHCP. The inverse problem deals with an estimation of unknown surface heat flux in a 2D slab and is solved by the variable metric method.
Findings
Comparison of estimated heat fluxes obtained using denoised data with those using original sensor data indicates that noise reduction by wavelet has a potential to be a powerful tool for improvement of IHCP results.
Originality/value
Noise reduction using wavelets, while it can be implemented very easily, may also significantly relegate (or even eliminate) conventional regularization schemes commonly used in IHCP.

Abstract
Purpose
This study explores match related factors and their impact on the batting strike rate in Twenty20 cricket – an aspect which can generate excitement and fan engagement in cricket matches.
Design/methodology/approach
Data was collected from www.cricinfo.com using a web scraping tool based on R programming from February 17, 2005, to October 25, 2022, numbering 4,221 men’s Twenty20 international innings featuring 41 national teams that had taken place in 85 venues across 11 countries of play. Hypothesis testing was conducted using one-way ANOVA.
Findings
The findings indicate that batters score faster in the first inning of a match, and mean strike rates also vary significantly based on the country of play. Further, the study analyses the top performing national sides, venues and country of play in terms of mean batting strike rate, thus providing insights to cricket boards, international regulating bodies of cricket, sponsors, media companies and coaching staff for better decision-making based on batting strike rate.
Originality/value
The originality of the study lies in its focus on using non-marketing strategies to increase fan engagement. Further, this study is the first one to examine different venues from the perspective of batting strike rate in men’s Twenty20 international matches.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to discuss the development of a defect classification system that can be used to detect and classify powder bed surface defects from captured layer images without the need for specialised computational hardware. The idea is to develop this system by making use of more traditional machine learning (ML) models instead of using computationally intensive deep learning (DL) models.
Design/methodology/approach
The approach that is used by this study is to use traditional image processing and classification techniques that can be applied to captured layer images to detect and classify defects without the need for DL algorithms.
Findings
The study proved that a defect classification algorithm could be developed by making use of traditional ML models with a high degree of accuracy and the images could be processed at higher speeds than typically reported in literature when making use of DL models.
Originality/value
This paper addresses a need that has been identified for a high-speed defect classification algorithm that can detect and classify defects without the need for specialised hardware that is typically used when making use of DL technologies. This is because when developing closed-loop feedback systems for these additive manufacturing machines, it is important to detect and classify defects without inducing additional delays to the control system.

Abstract
Purpose
University students are a unique population with great potential to adopt eating habits that promote positive human and planetary health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the current perceptions of sustainable eating behaviours among the students and to examine the determinants of sustainable eating behaviours.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from December 2020 to May 2021 through focus group discussions among university students in Ontario, facilitated through synchronous online sessions. There were 21 student participants during the course of five focus group sessions (4–5 participants per session) from various departments within the university. The discussions were transcribed and analyzed for main themes and concepts using open coding; deductive coding based on the framework by Deliens et al. as well as the literature; and inductive coding for emerging themes.
Findings
The students had different perceptions about what constituted sustainable eating behaviours, some of which were not based on fact. A variety of individual, environmental (macro, micro and social) and university characteristics were mentioned as factors influencing sustainable food choices, with “food literacy” and “campus food” being the top two factors.
Originality/value
This study presents a novel and holistic overview of how sustainable eating behaviours and sustainable foods are perceived among university students and identifies the perceived determinants of adopting sustainable eating behaviours. This study helps with identifying opportunities to promote sustainable eating behaviours among university students and the design/implementation of informed interventions and policies aimed at improving eating behaviours.

Design/methodology/approach
The study uses compact finite difference and the pseudospectral method to solve Darcy’s law.
Findings
The presence of heterogeneous anisotropy may result in non-monotonic trend of the breakthrough time and quantity of CO2 dissolved in the porous medium, which are important to the CO2 underground storage.
Originality/value
The manuscript numerically study the convective phenomena of mixture contained CO2 and brine. The phenomena are important to the process of CO2 enhanced oil recovery. Interesting qualitative patterns and quantitative trends are revealed in the manuscript.

Purpose
This study aims to analyze the performance of quality indices to continuously validate a predictive model focused on the control chart classification.
Design/methodology/approach
The research method used analytical statistical methods to propose a classification model. The project science research concepts were integrated with the statistical process monitoring (SPM) concepts using the modeling methods applied in the data science (DS) area. For the integration development, SPM Phases I and II were associated, generating models with a structured data analysis process, creating a continuous validation approach.
Findings
Validation was performed by simulation and analytical techniques applied to the Cohen’s Kappa index, supported by voluntary comparisons in the Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) and the Youden index, generating prescriptive criteria for the classification. Kappa-based control charts performed well for m = 5 sample amounts and n = 500 sizes when Pe is less than 0.8. The simulations also showed that Kappa control requires fewer samples than the other indices studied.
Originality/value
The main contributions of this study to both theory and practitioners is summarized as follows: (1) it proposes DS and SPM integration; (2) it develops a tool for continuous predictive classification models validation; (3) it compares different indices for model quality, indicating their advantages and disadvantages; (4) it defines sampling criteria and procedure for SPM application considering the technique’s Phases I and II and (5) the validated approach serves as a basis for various analyses, enabling an objective comparison among all alternative designs.

Abstract
Purpose
The performance of solid fins inside a differentially heated cubical cavity is numerically studied in this paper. The main purpose of the study is to make an optimization to reach the maximum heat transfer in the enclosure having the solid fins with studied parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
The considered domain of interest is a differentially heated cube having heat-conducting solid fins placed on the heated wall while an opposite wall is a cooled one. Other walls are adiabatic. Governing equations describing natural convection in the fluid filled cube and heat conduction in solid fins have been written using non-dimensional variables such velocity and vorticity taking into account the Boussinesq approximation for the buoyancy force and ideal solid/fluid interfaces between solid fins and fluid. The formulated equations with appropriate initial and boundary conditions have been solved by the finite difference method of the second of accuracy. The developed in-house computational code has been validated using the mesh sensitivity analysis and numerical data of other authors. Analysis has been performed in a wide range of key parameters such as Rayleigh number (Ra = 104–106), non-dimensional fins length (l = 0.2–0.8), non-dimensional location of fins (d = 0.2–0.6) and number of fins (n = 1–3).
Findings
From numerical methods point of view the used non-primitive variables allows to perform numerical simulation of convective heat transfer in three-dimensional (3D) regions with two advantages, namely, excluding difficulties that can be found using vector potential functions and reducing the computational time compared to primitive variables and SIMPLE-like algorithms. From a physical point of view, it has been shown that using solid fins can intensify the heat transfer performance compared to cavities without any fins. Fins located close to the bottom wall of the cavity have a better heat transfer rate than those placed close to the upper cavity surface. At high Rayleigh numbers, increasing the fins length beyond 0.6 leads to a reduction of the average Nusselt number, and one solid fin can be used to intensify the heat transfer.
Originality/value
The present numerical study is based on hybrid approach for numerical analysis of convective heat transfer using velocity and vorticity that has some mentioned advantages. Obtained results allow intensifying the heat transfer using solid fins in 3D chambers with appropriate location and length.

Abstract
Purpose
Amidst the scarcity of resources, it is undisputable that an effective public procurement performance measurement system (PMS) is required particularly in county governments, especially for Kenya to realize its ambitions in devolved governance system. County governments cannot be effectively evaluated on their performance if the long-term, strategic impact of public procurement processes and projects is not captured. Arising from this backdrop, this study aims to determine the predictors of strategic procurement performance metrics (SPPM) adoption in public procurement PMS of county governments.
Design/methodology/approach
Anchored on institutional theory and public sector scorecard model, a survey research design was adopted where data were collected through census from 115 respondents working in procurement, finance and stores department of Kakamega county government. Data were collected using questionnaire (75.56% response rate) and key informant interviews, and analyzed by using multiple regression model and ordinal logistic regression models.
Findings
Multiple regression model and ordinal logistics regression revealed that national government support negatively and significantly, and regulatory framework positively and significantly affects the adoption of SPPM.
Practical implications
There is need for formal mechanism that will enable the national government in partnership with the council of governors to be proactively involved in developing procurement performance measurement capacity of county governments. This study’s findings also provide suggestions for a working regulatory framework required for the adoption of SPPM by county governments.
Originality/value
This work adds value to the prevailing body of knowledge on public procurement PMS in the public sector.
