The purpose of this paper is to describe the progress India has made in its move towards a knowledge‐based economy with details of how the Indian Government has demonstrated its commitment to the development of fundamental pillars of knowledge sharing infrastructure, knowledge workers and a knowledge innovation system. Libraries are identified as key players in building an inclusive knowledge economy (KE) for a country.

An empirical study of the initiatives taken by Government of India as well as premier institutions and non‐governmental organisations in the area of information literacy, lifelong learning and knowledge repository development was undertaken. These are reviewed to report on the contribution each of them has made in the development of KE in India.

The practice‐based examples of how information and communication technology (ICT) projects are influencing contemporary Indian society and an account of government policies in regard to ICT implementation and development towards a KE are presented. The impediments in the process of KE in India are identified and recommendations are made.

This is an attempt to bring together initiatives and projects initiated by the Government of India as well as other agencies aimed at developing a knowledge‐based society which will ultimately lead to a KE in India.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of ICT to disseminate preventive health care information to combat the AIDS epidemic in India. The role of information professionals in various libraries and information centres and the challenges they are facing to increase HIV/AIDS awareness are discussed. Finally, recommendations are given and the conclusion is drawn that libraries and information professionals must develop AIDS literacy programmes to cater to the growing health information needs of the community.

Lack of knowledge about AIDS, its modes of transmission and ways to avoid infection, are major challenges in India. Staff in ICT‐based library and information centres can make a high impact on the local community by developing community‐based AIDS literacy programmes and hopefully save the society from an AIDS epidemic. There is a perceived need for providing health information services through public libraries to the illiterate rural population who are increasingly making themselves vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. However, awareness of e‐channels is low, especially in rural India; one solution is to increase take‐up and run AIDS awareness campaigns through electronic media.

A summary is provided of ICT‐based projects and initiatives by libraries and other agencies to disseminate AIDS information. Few multi‐type consortia have been formed in the USA and UK to develop AIDS databases and e‐learning modules are listed. These can be used as examples by Indian libraries with limited resources wishing to enhance community awareness through ICT. The concerted efforts amongst stakeholders are emphasized with the objectives of enhancing information professionals' skill in the AIDS information dissemination process.

A conference report of the first Asia‐Pacific Conference on Library & Information Education and Practice conference hosted by the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Library and Information Science education was the focus and preparing librarians for the twenty‐first century. The purpose is to educate practicing librarians and information scientists about directions in the profession and how to incorporate this message into the practice of librarianship.

The purpose of this paper is to review the state of libraries in India and summarise the strategic cooperative initiatives undertaken to improve user access to electronic information services.

The methodology used included personal interview, e‐mail interaction and literature searches. Several strategies for retrieving information were used across both the professional and research literature [Library Literature, Library and Information Science Abstracts, and Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC)] and the Internet (Google). A variety of search terms were employed to gain a broad overview of the subject and then more targeted terms to examine key aspects of the area of study with greater specificity. The paper also examines a range of general environmental factors impacting on libraries and which must be taken into account to accelerate the pace of beneficial change. It also lists the significant achievements in this field to date.

There are still significant potentials for further implementation of cooperative strategies to enhance networked, electronic information service delivery in India. This paper discusses some of the underlying issues which are presumably delaying the establishment of consortia and which need to be resolved.

This area of study is extremely fast moving and regular updating and continuation of this research is required to maintain a grasp of the situation.

The negative factors outlined in this paper which militate against the full successful impact of cooperative strategies are clearly set out, in order to help library managers and administrators create practical solutions capable of eliminating these obstacles to progress.

This paper aims to summarize the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museum’s (ATALM) 7th annual conference events and focus on best practices in indigenous archives, libraries and museums. The city Palm Springs, California, played host to an “eventful” ATALM 2014 international conference which featured diverse range of activities, namely, poem reading from personal collection, melodious flute playing by native players, an open house and cultural evening at a tribal museum, etc. The conference brought together 520 registered delegates from the USA, Canada and Mexico.

This report is an outline of selected ATALM 2014 conference events in Palm Springs based on the theme “Indigenous Archives, Libraries and Museums”. It summarizes selective events, namely, onsite workshops and poster session.

The conference focused on indigenous culture, as the participants discussed challenges and opportunities in sustaining cultural sovereignty of native nations. The hands-on or interactive labs/workshops were centered on the activities and needs of tribal archives, especially on preservation of cultural heritage. As a Fulbright scholar, the author was interested to know about American tribal history, indigenous culture, native archives and libraries, and excited to see the country’s desert scenery. Additionally, ATALM scholarship/financial support encouraged the author to attend the conference, and finally, the heat of the desert which accentuated the beauty of Palm Springs makes a complete experience.

The ATALM conferences are the important conference because of the participation of large number of tribal libraries and cultural heritage keeping organizations serving indigenous population. The ATALM 2014 covered areas like successful collaborations between tribal and non-tribal organizations, and building strategic networks among outside and within the communities.

The purpose of this report is to outline selected presentations of the national seminar based on the theme “open access movement – initiatives, promotion and impact” organized by department of Library and Information Science, University of Kashmir held during 23‐25 October 2008 at Srinagar and narrates scenic beauty of Kashmir.

Conference report.

Many case studies and presentations were made about applications of OA software and the OA publishing model to overcome barriers and promote scholarly communication with special reference to Asia. These are included in this report.

Based on discussion during the seminar and personal interaction the author had with the participants, this report is a useful summary of open access related activities which is a topic of interest to managers of organizations, teachers and educators, librarians, open access protagonists and members of information provider communities. Some new ideas/study reports that have not been placed the traditional literature are introduced in the discussion.

The purpose of this report is to outline‐few selected presentations of the ETD 2007 symposium based on the main theme “Added values to e‐theses” and highlight major events of the symposium held at Uppsala library, Sweden, during 13‐16 June 2007.

Conference report.

The four‐day meeting provided unique opportunity to professional librarians, academicians and other stakeholders of ETDs to explore the collaborative agenda emerged due to the changes in scholarly communication, long‐term digital preservation, ETD repository development and open access movement.

The author, who was also a speaker, provides an overview of the ETD 2007 international symposium, which carried out a variety of program viz. keynote and plenary sessions, paper presentations, poster sessions and local sight seeing tours to national museum, Linnaeus garden and libraries at Uppsala.
