Abstract
Purpose
This research proposes a framework to conceptualise the potential realm of data regarding shipping connectivity for application of data analytics which can be used to generate deeper insights with respect to the state of such linkages and potential areas for practical application.
Design/methodology/approach
The study method involved comprehensive presentation of different perspectives of assessing shipping connectivity and levels of data contained within container shipping services and proposed potential application to analyse profitability, performance, competitiveness, risk and environmental impact.
Findings
Advances in capabilities to handle large volumes of data offer scope for an integrated approach which utilises all available data from various stakeholders in analyses of liner shipping connectivity. Research shows how different types of data contained in container shipping services are related and can be organised for application of data analytics.
Research limitations/implications
Research implications are offered to shipping lines, port managers and operators and policymakers.
Practical implications
This research presented a conceptual framework that captures the range of data involved in container shipping services and how data analytics can be practically applied in an integrated manner.
Originality/value
This paper is the first in literature to discuss in detail the different levels of data that reside within shipping services that constitute liner shipping connectivity for application of data analytics.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examined how economic freedom and its related components, such as open markets, regulatory efficiency, rule of law and the size of government, affect bank risk behavior, focusing on the Japanese context.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a two-step GMM framework on the annual data of Japanese banks ranging from 2005 to 2020 to empirically test the hypotheses. Furthermore, we also use the ordinary least square method to ensure the robustness of our mainline findings.
Findings
The finding suggests that economic freedom increases the banks' risk-taking, thus making them fragile. The results also highlight that out of the four main subcomponents of economic freedom, regulatory efficiency and government size increase bank risk-taking, while the rule of law and open markets decrease banks' risk-taking. Additionally, we examine how the banks' specific characteristics affect the results by creating a subsample based on capitalization and liquidity ratios. Overall, the results are consistent with the baseline findings. Moreover, the results are robust to alternative proxy measures of risk.
Practical implications
The study's findings have several implications for regulators and policymakers. The results suggest that regulators and policymakers should reconsider their strategies for economic freedom to ensure that they promote stability in the banking system and reduce banks' risk-taking inclinations.
Originality/value
Although previous studies have examined the impact of economic freedom on bank stability and risk-taking, this study is the first to do so in the Japanese context, contributing to the literature by providing new insights and empirical evidence.

Purpose
The USA has long been known to provide a competitive environment in which religions compete for believers. The data clearly show winners and losers in this marketplace. Major Christian denominations are generally experiencing a decline in membership while religious “nones” are growing in number. Of note, the recent Pew studies of the US Religious Landscape (2008 and 2015a) indicate that measures of spirituality are rising in this environment. This paper empirically investigates how the demand for spirituality in religion may better understand these trends.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper applies ordinary least squares to survey data from the 2015 Pew study to empirically investigate how belonging to a major Christian faith and attending religious services impacts feeling of spirituality, while conditioning on a host of other demographic variables, in order to better understand these trends.
Findings
The author finds that being a member of a Christian denomination generally reduces the measure of spirituality relative to religious “nones.” However, this effect is almost always offset by a measure of attendance at religious services suggesting spirituality is positively associated with social interaction.
Originality/value
The results have implications for religious leaders concerned about maintaining and growing the church's membership. The results suggest that Church leaders may benefit from de-emphasizing hierarchical top-down rules and emphasizing community.

Abstract
Purpose
Prior studies have confirmed market segmentation as an important shackle to China's macroeconomy upgrade, but the systematic analysis of microenterprise upgrade remains inadequate. This paper aims to investigate the nonlinear impact of market segmentation on microenterprise upgrade.
Design/methodology/approach
The price method was applied to calculate China's provincial market segmentation, including commodity, capital, labor and energy. The generalized method of moments was employed to examine the nonlinear impact of market segmentation on the upgrading of manufacturing enterprises based on microenterprise data from 2003 to 2019.
Findings
First, China’s heterogeneous market segmentations have been significantly reduced. Macroeconomics and policies are critical factors in market integration. Second, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between China’s total market segmentation and the upgrading of manufacturing enterprises. Third, the relationship between the commodity market segmentation, labor market segmentation, energy market segmentation and manufacturing enterprises' upgrade is shown as an inverted U-shaped. Nevertheless, the relationship between the capital market segmentation and upgrading of manufacturing enterprises exhibits a U-shape.
Originality/value
The impact of market segmentation on the upgrading of manufacturing enterprises in China performs nonlinearly. An inverted U-shaped relationship exists between market segmentation in commodity, labor and energy and the upgrading of manufacturing enterprises, while a U-shaped relationship prevails between capital market segmentation and the upgrading of manufacturing enterprises.

Abstract
Purpose
The regulatory framework may be construed as the existence of supporting infrastructure that assists in control, direction/implementation of a proposed course of law, rule or action. The regulatory order is now more formalized, expert-driven, transparent, independent and pervasive across countries and sectors. As a result, regulatory reforms enable markets to function efficiently by providing a supportive environment for increased investment, private sector growth and market-led economic growth. This study aims to review previous literature for understanding the impact of sectoral regulatory framework on sectoral performance.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper has adopted a systematic literature review to understand dynamics between the sectoral regulatory framework and sectoral performance. While seven multidisciplinary databases were used to identify 51 research articles, the bibliometric research profiling was executed to broaden academic research.
Findings
The results are organized into three broad categories: research context, research area and research methods. The identified articles exhibited association with 12 distinct sectors/industries, with maximum articles belonging to telecom, energy and finance industries. The study has focused on evolution of regulatory studies, impact of regulatory framework on sectoral performance and commonality in regulatory studies. Among the 15 distinct research contexts identified in this systematic literature review (SLR), the highest mapping was registered (from 23 articles) by the research context “impact of regulatory framework on the sector–institutions, infrastructure and performance indicators.”
Practical implications
Public administration researchers are increasingly using mixed methods research approaches to add diverse and novel perspectives on wicked problems. The qualitative approach (grounded theory, action research, phenomenology and participant observations) is appropriate for understanding the native viewpoints of regulatory practitioners and reducing the gap between rigor and relevance.
Originality/value
The study addresses lack of systematic review of articles covering the impact of regulatory framework on sectoral performance encompassing all sectors by, inter alia, collating important bibliometric profiles of the identified articles.

Purpose
Cost overrun in infrastructure projects is a constant concern, with a need for a proper solution. The current estimation practice needs improvement to reduce cost overruns. This study aimed to find possible statistical modelling techniques that could be used to develop cost models to produce more reliable cost estimates.
Design/methodology/approach
A bibliographic literature review was conducted using a two-stage selection method to compile the relevant publications from Scopus. Then, Visualisation of Similarities (VOS)-Viewer was used to develop the visualisation maps for co-occurrence keyword analysis and yearly trends in research topics.
Findings
The study found seven primary techniques used as cost models in construction projects: regression analysis (RA), artificial neural network (ANN), case-based reasoning (CBR), fuzzy logic, Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS), support vector machine (SVM) and reference class forecasting (RCF). RA, ANN and CBR were the most researched techniques. Furthermore, it was observed that the model's performance could be improved by combining two or more techniques into one model.
Research limitations/implications
The research was limited to the findings from the bibliometric literature review.
Practical implications
The findings provided an assessment of statistical techniques that the industry can adopt to improve the traditional estimation practice of infrastructure projects.
Originality/value
This study mapped the research carried out on cost-modelling techniques and analysed the trends. It also reviewed the performance of the models developed for infrastructure projects. The findings could be used to further research to develop more reliable cost models using statistical modelling techniques with better performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to further analyse the decision-making process of low-income consumer from an emerging market by verifying the influence of regulatory focus and construal level theory on indebtedness.
Design/methodology/approach
An experimental study was carried out with a design 2 (regulatory focus: promotion vs prevention) × 2 (psychological distance: high vs low) between subjects, with 140 low-income consumers.
Findings
Our study points out that the propensity towards indebtedness of low-income consumer is higher in a distal psychological distance. We found that promotion and prevention groups have the same propensity to indebtedness. Moreover, we highlight that low-income consumers are prone to propensity to indebtedness due to taking decisions focused on the present with an abstract mindset.
Social implications
Financial awareness advertisements should focus on providing more concrete strategies in order to reduce decision-making complexity and provide ways to reduce competing situations that could deplete self-regulation resources. Also, public policy should organize educational programs to increase the low-income consumer's ability to deal with personal finances and reduce this task complexity. Finally, educational financial programs should also incorporate psychology professionals to teach mindfulness techniques applied to financial planning.
Originality/value
This study is the first to consider regulatory focus and construal level to explain low-income indebtedness. This paper provides a deeper analysis of the low-income consumers' decision process. Also, it supports and guides future academic and decision-making efforts.

Purpose
This paper aims to explore the comparative analysis of marketing strategies between seaports and dry ports. Second, this paper proposes a recommendation to improve marketing approaches in both nodes.
Design/methodology/approach
This research analyzes current marketing approaches to improve the freight volume and enhance interrelation between them for a comprehensive collaboration in the freight supply chain. This research employed semi-structured interviews via an e-interview questionnaire.
Findings
The result shows that dry port and seaport practice a mixed marketing strategy. Some marketing elements that a seaport applies are also applied by a dry port, like focusing on the target customer, joining exhibitions and face-to-face meetings. Customized service to clients, frequent discussion on the effective marketing plans and increasing the facilities at the seaport and dry ports can improve the marketing strategies in dry port and seaports.
Originality/value
Seaports are the critical components in esteem-driven context, which add to supply chains by creating value-added services in the transport chain. Nonetheless, research between dry ports and seaports has increasingly drawn the attention of scholars during the last decade. Having said like that, there have not been any pragmatic studies undertaken in the Malaysian context that mainly discusses the marketing prospect of the dry ports and seaports especially during COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract
Purpose
AI is an emerging tool in HRM practices that has drawn increasing attention from HRM researchers and HRM practitioners. While there is little doubt that AI-enabled HRM exerts positive effects, it also triggers negative influences. Gaining a better understanding of the dark side of AI-enabled HRM holds great significance for managerial implementation and for enriching related theoretical research.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, the authors conducted a systematic review of the published literature in the field of AI-enabled HRM. The systematic literature review enabled the authors to critically analyze, synthesize and profile existing research on the covered topics using transparent and easily reproducible procedures.
Findings
In this study, the authors used AI algorithmic features (comprehensiveness, instantaneity and opacity) as the main focus to elaborate on the negative effects of AI-enabled HRM. Drawing from inconsistent literature, the authors distinguished between two concepts of AI algorithmic comprehensiveness: comprehensive analysis and comprehensive data collection. The authors also differentiated instantaneity into instantaneous intervention and instantaneous interaction. Opacity was also delineated: hard-to-understand and hard-to-observe. For each algorithmic feature, this study connected organizational behavior theory to AI-enabled HRM research and elaborated on the potential theoretical mechanism of AI-enabled HRM's negative effects on employees.
Originality/value
Building upon the identified secondary dimensions of AI algorithmic features, the authors elaborate on the potential theoretical mechanism behind the negative effects of AI-enabled HRM on employees. This elaboration establishes a robust theoretical foundation for advancing research in AI-enable HRM. Furthermore, the authors discuss future research directions.
