Abstract

Purpose

Field excited flux switching machines (FEFSM) are preferred over induction and synchronous machines due to the confinement of all excitation sources on the stator leaving a robust rotor. This paper aims to perform coupled electromagnetic thermal analysis and stress analysis for single phase FEFSM as, prolonged high-speed operational time with core and copper losses makes it prone to stress and thermal constraints as temperature rise in machine lead to degraded electromagnetic performance whereas the violation of the principle stress limit may result in mechanical deformation of the rotor.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents the implementation of coupled electromagnetic-thermal and rotor stress analysis on single-phase FEFSM with non-overlap winding configurations using finite element analysis (FEA) methodology in JMAG V. 18.1. three-dimensional (3D) magnetic loss analysis is performed and extended to 3D thermal analysis to predict temperature distribution on various parts of the machine whereas Stress analysis predicts mechanical stress acting upon edges and faces of the rotor.

Findings

Analysis reveals that temperature distribution and rotor stress on the machine is within acceptable limits. A maximum temperature rise of 37.7°C was noticed at armature and field windings, temperature distribution in stator near pole proximity was 35°C whereas no significant change in rotor temperature was noticed. Furthermore, principal stress at the speed of 3,000 rpm and 30,000 rpm was found out to be 0.0305 MPa 3.045 MPa, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The designed machine will be optimized for improvement of electromagnetic performance followed by hardware implementation and experimental testing in the future.

Practical implications

The model is developed for axial fan applications.

Originality/value

Thermal analysis is not being implemented on FEFSM for axial fan applications which is an important analysis to ensure the electromagnetic performance of the machine.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper sets out to develop analytical solution to the hysteresis, eddy current and excess losses using the T(x) model. Based on Steinmetz' postulation, the losses, represented by the area enclosed by the hysteresis loop, are individually formulated in analytical form. The model is applied to sinusoidal and triangular excitation wave forms.

Design/methodology/approach

The equivalent interaction fields introduced into the model represent the losses individually by applying the separation and superposition principle.

Findings

Contrary to the presently used models, this model describes the hysteresis loop with its natural sigmoid shape and describes the losses individually in simpler mathematical formulation.

Research limitations/implications

Experimental verification will still be needed as to the accuracy of the model and the applicability to the various magnetic materials.

Practical implications

The model presented here gives a more realistic presentation of the hysteresis loop and by using simpler mathematics than other models it is more accessible to the practical user. At the same time with the easy mathematics and its visual presentation it is a great value to people engaged in theoretical research in the field of magnetics.

Originality/value

In contrast with present magnetic loss models, using almost exclusively MSPM with “flat power” loop or the elliptical equivalent loop approximations, these calculations based on the T(x) model of hysteresis and uses realistic shape for the hysteresis loop, resulting in a simpler mathematical formulation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to calculate forces created by the magnetic leakage field, which are directly applied to tank walls via magnetic shield.

Design/methodology/approach

Electromagnetic and mechanical calculations use 3D finite element technology, both applied to materials having constant orthotropic properties. The magnetic solver uses harmonic excitation; the analysis of mechanical deflection is carried out in static conditions. Two types of forces are considered: magnetostatic surface forces and magnetostriction volumetric ones. In measurements, the laser scanning vibrometer was applied.

Findings

Electromagnetic calculations must use an FE mesh much denser than that for typical power loss analysis. The magnetic orthotropy of the shield material does not create any important effects and it may be omitted. Magnetostriction forces are similar in value to magnetostatic ones, but their influence on the shield deformation is negligible.

Research limitations/implications

The results obtained for the analysis of the displacement of elements of the tank wall are exemplary – they show the difference between magnetostatic and magnetostriction excitation only. The analysis of the vibration of the transformer tank must include the presence of the oil inside the tank.

Originality/value

The asymmetrical placement of magnetic shields against the transformer core creates the visible differences in the magnitudes of magnetostatic forces applied to particular shields. Therefore, the design of magnetic shielding should also include the vibrational point of view.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, a computational model of a coaxial magnetic gear (MG) design with viscose ferrofluid between rotors is proposed. Viscose ferrofluid is used to decrease the magnetic reluctance and therefore creates higher magnetic torque. However, viscose friction of ferrofluid is undesirable and must be minimised in this particular application. MG is supposed to operate under low rotational speeds, where the dynamic viscose friction is very low, and the effects of the viscose ferrofluid over the MG’s efficiency must be estimated. The paper aims to analyze the performance of MG with viscose ferrofluid and to estimate the MG efficiency by computational model using finite element method (FEM).

Design/methodology/approach

An MG design with viscose ferrofluid between the outer low-speed rotor and modulating steel segments was modelled as a coupled transient magnetic field problem and a kinematic model with viscous friction coefficients derived from a previously computed fluid dynamics model.

Findings

The proposed computational implementation is suitable for homogeneous magnetic fluid modelling in electromagnetic actuators and rotational machines. The results regarding power and torque transmission of MG were obtained by coupled finite element modelling. The efficiency of MG significantly decreased due to ferrofluid friction.

Originality/value

The described MG design with viscose ferrofluid is a novel device with new operational characteristics, and new results for the effects of viscose ferrofluid friction in the outer magnetic field over the MG efficiency are estimated.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose and establish a set of new benchmark models to investigate and confidently validate the modeling and prediction of total stray-field loss inside magnetic and non-magnetic components under harmonics-direct current (HDC) hybrid excitations. As a new member-set (P21e) of the testing electromagnetic analysis methods Problem 21 Family, the focus is on efficient analysis methods and accurate material property modeling under complex excitations.

Design/methodology/approach

This P21e-based benchmarking covers the design of new benchmark models with magnetic flux compensation, the establishment of a new benchmark measurement system with HDC hybrid excitation, the formulation of the testing program (such as defined Cases I–V) and the measurement and prediction of material properties under HDC hybrid excitations, to test electromagnetic analysis methods and finite element (FE) computation models and investigate the electromagnetic behavior of typical magnetic and electromagnetic shields in electrical equipment.

Findings

The updated Problem 21 Family (V.2021) can now be used to investigate and validate the total power loss and the different shielding performance of magnetic and electromagnetic shields under various HDC hybrid excitations, including the different spatial distributions of the same excitation parameters. The new member-set (P21e) with magnetic flux compensation can experimentally determine the total power loss inside the load-component, which helps to validate the numerical modeling and simulation with confidence. The additional iron loss inside the laminated sheets caused by the magnetic flux normal to the laminations must be correctly modeled and predicted during the design and analysis. It is also observed that the magnetic properties (B27R090) measured in the rolling and transverse directions with different direct current (DC) biasing magnetic field are quite different from each other.

Research limitations/implications

The future benchmarking target is to study the effects of stronger HDC hybrid excitations on the internal loss behavior and the microstructure of magnetic load components.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a new extension of Problem 21 Family (1993–2021) with the upgraded excitation, involving multi-harmonics and DC bias. The alternating current (AC) and DC excitation can be applied at the two sides of the model’s load-component to avoid the adverse impact on the AC and DC power supply and investigate the effect of different AC and DC hybrid patterns on the total loss inside the load-component. The overall effectiveness of numerical modeling and simulation is highlighted and achieved via combining the efficient electromagnetic analysis methods and solvers, the reliable material property modeling and prediction under complex excitations and the precise FE computation model using partition processing. The outcome of this project will be beneficial to large-scale and high-performance numerical modeling.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a procedure for the determination of the local magnetic loss distribution in transformer cores. An efficient identification method of the parameters of the Jiles‐Atherton model is first described. This method uses nonlinear optimization techniques and several experimental loops with different magnitudes, or measurements obtained with a low frequency supply signal, for a precise determination of the hysteresis model parameters. It is validated by the identification of two different kinds of magnetic materials: a standard laminated material made of 1008 steel and a soft magnetic composite Atomet‐EM1. The implementation of the hysteresis Jiles‐Atherton model in a 2D field calculation tool is detailed. The field calculation procedure is illustrated by two application examples involving single phase tranformers with cores made of the soft magnetic composite Atomet‐EM1.

Abstract

Purpose

The electromagnetic field and cooling system of a high power switched reluctance motor (SRM) are studied numerically. The geometry of the motor and its main components are established using a computer-aided design software in the actual size. This study aims to evaluate the resulting thermal losses using the electromagnetic analysis of the motor.

Design/methodology/approach

In the electromagnetic analysis, the Joule’s loss in the copper wires of the coil windings and the iron losses (the eddy currents loss and the hysteresis loss) are considered. The flow and heat transfer model for the thermal analysis of the motor including the conduction in solid parts and convection in the fluid part is introduced. The magnetic losses are imported into the thermal analysis model in the form of internal heat generation in motor components. Several cooling system approaches were introduced, such as natural convection cooling, natural convection cooling with various types of fins over the motor casing, forced conviction air-cooled cooling system using a mounted fan, casing surface with and without heat sinks, liquid-cooled cooling system using the water in a channel shell and a hybrid air-cooled and liquid-cooled cooling system.

Findings

The results of the electromagnetics analysis show that the low rotational speed of the motor induces higher currents in coil windings, which in turn, it causes higher copper losses in SRM coil windings. For higher rotational speed of SRM, the core loss is higher than the copper loss is in SRM due to the higher frequency. An air-cooled cooling system is used for cooling of SRM. The results reveal when the rotational speed is at 4,000 rpm, the coil loss would be at the maximum value. Therefore, the coil temperature is about 197.9°C, which is higher than the tolerated standard temperature insulation material. Hence, the air-cooled system cannot reduce the temperature to the safe temperature limitation of the motor and guarantee the safe operation of SRM. Thus, a hybrid system of both air-cooled and liquid-cooled cooling system with mounting fins at the outer surface of the casing is proposed. The hybrid system with the liquid flow of Re = 1,500 provides a cooling power capable of safe operation of the motor at 117.2°C, which is adequate for standard insulation material grade E.

Originality/value

The electromagnetic field and cooling system of a high power SRM in the presence of a mounted fan at the rear of the motor are analyzed. The thermal analysis is performed for both of the air-cooled and liquid-cooled cooling systems to meet the cooling demands of the motor for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a comparative study of different stator-segmentation topologies of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) used in traction drives and their effect on iron losses. Using stator segmentation allows one to achieve more significant copper fill factors, resulting in increased power densities and efficiencies. The segmentation of the stators creates additional air gaps and changes the soft magnetic material’s material properties due to the cut edge effect. The aim of this paper is to present an in-depth analysis of the influence of stator segmentation on iron losses. The main goal was to compare various segmentation methods under equal excitation conditions in terms of their influence on iron loss.

Design/methodology/approach

A transient finite element method analysis combined with an extended iron-loss model was used to evaluate discussed effects on the stator’s iron losses. The workflow to obtain a homogenized airgap length accounting for cut edge effects was established.

Findings

The paper concludes that the segmentation in most cases slightly decreases the iron losses in the stator because of the overall reduced magnetic flux density B due to the additional air gaps in the magnetic circuit. An increase of the individual components, as well as total power loss, was observed in the Pole Chain segmentation design. In general, segmentation did not change the total iron losses significantly. However, different segmentation methods resulted in the different distortion of the magnetic field and, consequently, in different iron loss compositions. The analysed segmentation methods exhibited different iron loss behaviour with respect to the operation points of the machine. The final finding is that analysed stator segmentations had a negligible influence on the total iron loss. Therefore, applying segmentation is an adequate measure to improve PMSMs as it enables, e.g. increase of the winding fill factor or simplifying the assembly processes, etc.

Originality/value

The influence of stator segmentation on iron losses was analysed. An in-depth evaluation was performed to determine how the discussed changes influence the individual iron loss components. A workflow was developed to achieve a computationally cheap homogenized model.
