Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Maddi Faith.

Design/methodology/approach

In this single case study, Maddi gives a short background and the origins of her mental health issues and is then interviewed by Jerome.

Findings

Maddi tells the authors how her problems developed in her childhood and of the journey she has been on since.

Research limitations/implications

Single case studies provide a single perspective. Yet are they of any less value than a commentary by an academic? On the contrary, many offer unique insights into how the authors provide services for people with mental health problems, and of better ways to help them.

Practical implications

Maddi raises the issue of “falling between services”, with the result that the individual concerned does not receive the help they need.

Social implications

The persistent stigma of mental health problems is an issue that will need to be addressed for decades if it is to be overcome. Personal witness is vital in tackling this issue. Maddi has already done a lot to address this through her work at University.

Originality/value

The Trust the second author worked for, for many years used to have a staff “Made a Difference” award. Maddi surely deserves such an award for her own efforts to develop our understanding of the realities of mental health problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to share the author’s personal experiences as both a service user for the past 10 years and becoming a professional working in the same field. This paper aims to provide an insight into some of the barriers faced relating to support and procedures, as well as provide advice and guidance to service users and professionals.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is designed primarily as a narrative; a first-person approach is taken.

Findings

Advice and reflections for service users is given as well as guidance for professionals.

Originality/value

This paper is a narrative of an individual’s personal experiences and observations therefore providing a unique outlook. This paper contributes to both service users who may feel unsure about or overwhelmed by their treatment and their involvement in decisions, as well as professionals trying to develop their understanding and awareness of less thought about needs for autonomy for service users and improving their practice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the 20 remarkable lives of student accounts published in this journal. These recovery narratives (RNs) are examined first in terms of whether they meet the five elements of the connectedness, hope, identity, meaning and empowerment (CHIME) model of recovery and then in terms of what makes each account remarkable.

Design/methodology/approach

Two Excel spreadsheets were created. One had each author’s name and the five elements of the CHIME model, the other the features of a remarkable life.

Findings

All 20 accounts fulfilled the criteria for the CHIME model, independently validating this model of recovery. Hence, each account showed evidence of connectedness, hope, identity, meaning and empowerment. A number of additional characteristics stood out from the accounts such as the importance of motherhood and of education.

Research limitations/implications

All 20 accounts were only reviewed by the two authors, who may be subject to bias. To reduce this, the first author did the bulk of the ratings. This paper shows the importance of education for recovery.

Practical implications

Some 15/20 accounts reported problems with mental health services, mainly around waiting lists. Must mental health always remain a Cinderella service?

Originality/value

This is the first attempt to synthesise this particular set of recovery narratives, entitled remarkable lives. These accounts show the richness of the recovery journeys embarked on by many sufferers and these are just drawn from one University. Like the authors of these stories, we too as recovery specialists have much to learn from their inspiring accounts.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to better understand how academics-in-the-making construe doctoral performance and the impacts of this construal on their positioning in relation to doctoral performance expectations.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on 25 semi-structured interviews with PhD students from Canadian, Dutch, Scottish and Australian business schools.

Findings

Based on Decoteau’s (2016) concept of reflexive habitus, this study highlights how doctoral students’ construal is influenced by their previous experiences and by expectations from other adjacent fields in which they simultaneously gravitate. This leads them to adopt a position oscillating between resistance and compliance in relation to their understanding of doctoral performance expectations promoted in the academic field.

Research limitations/implications

The concept of reflexivity, as understood by Decoteau (2016), is found to be pivotal when an individual integrates into a new field.

Practical implications

This study encourages business schools to review expectations regarding doctoral performance. These expectations should be clear, but they should also leave room for PhD students to preserve their academic aspirations.

Originality/value

It is beneficial to empirically clarify the influence of performance expectations in academia on the reflexivity of PhD students, as the majority of studies exploring this topic mainly leverage auto-ethnographic data.

Over the last five years, N8 AgriFood has united the expertise of food systems thinkers across the eight most research intensive universities in the North of England, in a programme working to address key issues around food systems resilience across the themes of food production, supply chains and consumer health. As the programme moves towards focusing the results of its research and combined multidisciplinary expertise into policy guidance, the authors of this paper from within N8 AgriFood take an overview of the work undertaken across the programme's eight member institutions. It explores work around linking communities to food, and the vital potential of the research to inform new policy that encapsulates societal sustainability into food systems thinking.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether employees at various levels of managerial positions (e.g. senior, middle, and junior) exhibit different levels of mental toughness. In addition, the study seeks to explore possible effects of age on mental toughness.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 522 participants working in UK‐based organisations completed demographic information and the Mental Toughness Questionnaire.

Findings

Results revealed significant main effects for both managerial position and age. Follow‐up analysis revealed that mental toughness ratings were higher in more senior positions, and that mental toughness generally increased with age.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of the study is its cross‐sectional design. Longitudinal studies investigating the development of mental toughness over time or the effect of mental toughness training are needed. It appears, however, that age plays a role in an individual's mental toughness profile. This suggests that increased exposure to significant life events may have a positive developmental effect on mental toughness.

Originality/value

The results of the study would suggest that mental toughness can be developed through appropriate training programmes.

Abstract

Introduced into the literature a decade ago, grit originally defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals has stimulated considerable research on positive effects primarily in the academic and military contexts, as well as attracted widespread media attention. Despite recent criticism regarding grit’s construct and criterion-related validity, research on grit has begun to spill over into the work context as well. In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of the initial theoretical foundations of grit as a motivational driver, and present newer conceptualizations on the mechanisms of grit’s positive effects rooted in goal-setting theory. Furthermore, the authors also draw attention to existing shortcomings of the current definition and measurement of grit, and their implications for its scientific and practical application. After establishing a theoretical understanding, the authors discuss the potential utility of grit for human resource management, related to staffing and recruitment, development and training, and performance management systems as well as performance evaluations. The authors conclude this chapter with a discussion of necessary and potential future research, and consider the practical implications of grit in its current state.

Abstract

Purpose

The characteristics of the Internet of Things (IoT) are such that traditional models of trust developed within interpersonal, organizational, virtual and information systems contexts may be inappropriate for use within an IoT context. The purpose of this paper is to offer empirically generated understandings of trust within potential IoT applications.

Design/methodology/approach

In an attempt to capture and communicate the complex and all-pervading but frequently inconspicuous nature of ubiquitous technologies within potential IoT techno-systems, propositions developed are investigated using a novel mixed methods research design combining a videographic projective technique with a quantitative survey, sampling 1,200 respondents.

Findings

Research findings suggest the dimensionality of trust may vary according to the IoT techno-service context being assessed.

Originality/value

The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, and from a theoretical perspective, it offers a conceptual foundation for trust dimensions within potential IoT applications based upon empirical evaluation. Second, and from a pragmatic perspective, the paper offers insights into how findings may guide practitioners in developing appropriate trust management systems dependent upon the characteristics of particular techno-service contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

Even though many studies have been conducted in exploring the determinants of job stress, limited research has been conducted in exploring how the internal factors of religious orientation and the relatively new variable in the field of psychology, psychological capital (PsyCap), may relate to job stress. This study aims to examine the influence of PsyCap as a mediating variable on the relationship between religious orientation and job stress.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used self-administered surveys. Data was collected through the completion of online questionnaires. The participants include 208 accountants and business practitioners in Indonesia. Data were analysed using structural equation model-partial least squares.

Findings

The results show that intrinsic (extrinsic) religious orientation is negatively (positively) related to job stress and positively (negatively) related to PsyCap. Additionally, PsyCap mediates the relationship between religious orientation (intrinsic and extrinsic) and job stress. Other results indicate a positive relationship between PsyCap and job stress.

Research limitations/implications

Firstly, the sample used comes from various professions in companies or agencies that function differently. Secondly, this study asks individuals to assess their own job stress, which increases the chance of bias.

Practical implications

The findings of this study will provide a recommendation to the company, particularly the human resources division, to consider candidates’ religious orientation and PsyCap levels during the recruitment process. Thus, the company may observe the employees or individuals who can effectively manage job stress.

Originality/value

This study provides new empirical evidence regarding the relationship between religious orientation, PsyCap and job stress. It shows that the individual’s religious orientation (intrinsic and extrinsic) affects their level of PsyCap (higher and lower), which is a determinant factor in the experience of job stress.

Purpose

This paper aims to provide empirically derived insights into trust and its predictors within a cyber-physical system context of a household service.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology comprises an innovative mixed methods design encompassing a videographic animated film portraying a potential “slice of life” household service-system scenario that was subsequently incorporated into a quantitative survey. A total of 400 responses were then used to examine trust dimensions and their hypothesised predictors.

Findings

Findings suggest trust is two-dimensional, with “online networking competency”, “perceptions of risk”, “propensity to trust technology in general” and “concerns about security” being significant predictors. Surprisingly, “concerns about privacy” do not have a significant effect.

Originality/value

The contribution of this research is twofold. Firstly, from a theoretical perspective, the paper offers empirical insights into trust and its predictors within a cyber-physical system context of a household service. Secondly, and from a pragmatic perspective, the model derived from this study may aid practitioners in developing trust strategies and trust management systems within such contexts.
