Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to determine the influence of a number of measured points on results of measurements of turbine blades, which are the parts of aircraft engines. The selection of a number of points is the part of a measurement strategy in the coordinate measuring technique and determines the accuracy of measurements.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical and experimental investigations were conducted. The measurements were simulated using different numbers of measured points. The simulated measurements were performed for the selected dispersion of measured points. The dispersion reflected the inaccuracy of a manufacturing process of the considered product and the uncertainty of measurements of curvilinear surfaces. To verify the accuracy of the numerical studies, experimental research was conducted. The real measurements were conducted using the selected coordinate measuring machine.

Findings

The gained results following the simulations can be very useful when selecting the appropriate number of measured points. The chosen number of points may be used during real measurements of turbine blades conducted on coordinate measuring machines. The results of numerical research indicate that there should be used the average radii of leading and trailing edges to increase the accuracy of measurements. The results of real coordinate measurements confirmed the results of simulation studies.

Originality/value

The main novelty of the paper is the presented methodology for determining the influence of measured points on results of measurements. The presented methodology helps the user of a coordinate measuring system select the appropriate measurement strategy of free-form surfaces applied in the aerospace industry.

Examines the tenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a methodology for volumetric error compensation. This technique is applied to an Objet Eden350V 3D printer and involves a custom measurement strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

The kinematic model of the printer is explained, and its error model is simplified to 18 independent error functions. Each error function is defined by a cubic Legendre polynomial. The coefficients of the polynomials are obtained through a Levenberg–Marquardt optimization process. This optimization process compares, in an iterative algorithm, nominal coordinates with actual values of the cloud of points. The points are built in the faces of a gauge artefact as conical sockets defining one unique point for each socket. These points are measured by a coordinate measuring machine self-centring measurement process.

Findings

Most of the errors of the 3D printer are systematic. It is possible to obtain an improvement of 70 per cent in terms of global mean error reduction in single points within a volume of 120 × 120 × 40 mm. The forecast of the final error compensation fully matches the actual final error.

Practical implications

This methodology can be used for accuracy improvement in additive manufacturing machines.

Originality/value

Unlike the calculation of geometric errors, the proposed parametric determination through optimization of the error model allows global error reduction, which decreases all sort of systematic errors concurrently. The proposed measurement strategy allows high reliability, high speed and operator independence in the measurement process, which increases efficiency and reduces the cost. The proposed methodology is easily translated to other rapid prototyping machines and allows scalability when replicating artefacts covering any working volume.

Abstract

This paper is motivated by the need for a generic approach to evaluate the volumetric accuracy of rapid prototyping (RP) machines. The approach presented in this paper is inspired in large part by the techniques developed over the years for the parametric evaluation of coordinate measuring machine (CMM) errors. In CMM metrology, the parametric error functions for the machine are determined by actual measurement of a master reference artifact with known characteristics. In our approach, the RP machine is used to produce a generic artifact, which is then measured by a master CMM, and measurement results are used to infer the RP machine's parametric error functions. The results presented demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach on a two‐dimensional model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to produce electric discharge machining (EDM) electrodes by using stereolithography (SLA) rapid prototyping technique and investigate the machining performance of these electrodes. In the experimental part of the study, the performance of solid copper and copper‐coated SLA (cc/SLA) electrodes are observed and compared.

Design/methodology/approach

The performance outputs such as material removal rate, machining depth, workpiece surface roughness and electrode front surface wear are used as metrics of comparison. The temperature measurements taken from the face of both solid copper and cc/SLA electrodes indicated that the heat build up during machining significantly accelerated the failure of cc/SLA electrodes.

Findings

The paper finds that circulating the cooling liquid inside the internal cooling channels formed with SLA technique, elongated the life of cc/SLA electrodes by dissipating the heat from the coating.

Originality/value

The Fluent Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Software is used to numerically analyze various aspects of cooling of cc/SLA electrodes. The key findings of the study are presented in this paper.
