Abstract

Reviews the origins of the MRes – the research masters programme developed in the mid‐1990s as a result of pressure to provide research students with a broader based training in research before embarking on a PhD or industrial research career. Notes the variation in the implementation of the MRes across a range of science‐based programmes observing the diversity, innovation and approach to skills training. The implications of recent and current national developments promoted by the Government, the QAA and the research councils are considered briefly. Finally the paper reflects on the role that the MRes might play in the further development of research training in doctoral programmes in the UK.

Abstract

Purpose

Cobalt-based alloys exhibit a unique combination of wear resistance, strength and corrosion resistance. Localized corrosion of such alloys in seawater system can be several orders of magnitude faster than general corrosion, and direct experimental evidence of the local activation process is still lacking, which makes the accurate prediction for properties difficult, especially for long-term corrosion. The purpose of this study is revealing the relationship between multiple environments and corrosion properties to predict the corrosion of cobalt-based alloys.

Design/methodology/approach

A data-driven method for the prediction of the corrosion behavior of cast and hot isostatic-pressed CoCrMo/W alloys in seawater is proposed. The gradient boosting regression models calculate mean relative errors (MREs) of 0.160 and 0.435 by evaluating a hold-out set for breakdown potential (Eb) and maximum current density (imax), respectively, considering various compositions, synthesis methods and corrosion environments.

Findings

The models can be used to estimate the “unseen” cobalt-based alloy after immersion in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution for one, two, four and eight months to obtain high precision with MREs of 7.8% and 9.8% for Eb and imax, respectively.

Originality/value

Machine learning method provides novel and promising insights for the prediction of localized corrosion properties.

This study aims to understand how marketing faculty become reference-educators of business executives by exploring the factors that contribute to their teaching performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand how marketing faculty become reference-educators of business executives by exploring the factors that contribute to their teaching performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploratory qualitative research, using in-depth interviews in which the object of the study was the marketing educator, based on three Brazilian business schools.

Findings

The teaching performance depends on the teaching practice, which is influenced by technical knowledge, pedagogical factors and personal features. The development of a practitioner-educator is a complex process that arises from both formal and informal learning.

Research limitations/implications

Deepens the understanding of marketing educators’ individual factors, proposing a model to expand the knowledge of the factors shaping a reference-educator.

Practical implications

Raises awareness among managers of Higher Education institutions of the relevance of the development of its educators considering not only pedagogical skills but also marketing and social skills.

Social implications

Improvements in education generate a positive contribution to society. Better marketing educators may result in better professionals, which could, ultimately, generate more benefits both for corporations and for society.

Originality/value

Existing literature has neglected the understanding of how marketing educators’ individual factors may impact on good teaching to create a well-rounded practitioner-educator. This study seeks to address that gap by exploring how marketing faculty, especially practitioners of marketing, become reference-educators, that is, educators identified as exemplars of good practice by their students and peers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to explore how professional educators in early childhood education cope with diverse linguistic environments in their daily work. The article addresses this issue by focusing on practices of language use in Luxembourgian nurseries.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is reflecting on empirical data of an ethnographic research project currently conducted in six different day care facilities for children from three months to four years old. The study uses participant observation and videography as data collection strategies. Data analysis was based on field notes and protocols, video recordings, photographs, documents, and artifacts.

Findings

On the basis of the ethnographic observations, two different practical regimes of “doing linguistic diversity” are discriminated: an area of “practicing super‐diversity” and an area of “practicing difference”. In the context of the second regime it becomes visible that the use of Luxemburgish as lingua franca for the communication between educators and children produces unequal distributed opportunities for foreign children when participating linguistically in the everyday life of daycare facilities.

Originality/value

The paper raises serious questions about the language policies in the Luxembourgian daycare sector as well as in respect to the supposed inclusion effects of early childhood education and care, effects that both politicians and professionals emphasize regularly. This especially concerns the conceptualization of “the child” which is in use while professionals treat children as foreign language speakers.

Abstract

Purpose

With the rapid advancement in the automotive industry, the friction coefficient (FC), wear rate (WR) and weight loss (WL) have emerged as crucial parameters to measure the performance of automotive braking systems, so the FC, WR and WL of friction material are predicted and analyzed in this work, with an aim of achieving accurate prediction of friction material properties.

Design/methodology/approach

Genetic algorithm support vector machine (GA-SVM) model is obtained by applying GA to optimize the SVM in this work, thus establishing a prediction model for friction material properties and achieving the predictive and comparative analysis of friction material properties. The process parameters are analyzed by using response surface methodology (RSM) and GA-RSM to determine them for optimal friction performance.

Findings

The results indicate that the GA-SVM prediction model has the smallest error for FC, WR and WL, showing that it owns excellent prediction accuracy. The predicted values obtained by response surface analysis are closed to those of GA-SVM model, providing further evidence of the validity and the rationality of the established prediction model.

Originality/value

The relevant results can serve as a valuable theoretical foundation for the preparation of friction material in engineering practice.

Abstract

This paper discusses a programme of work being carried out jointly by the British Aircraft Corporation and Hawker Siddeley Aviation, into the design of flight decks for future civil transport aircraft. The programme is aimed at exploring all aspects of flight deck design, in sufficient depth to enable decisions to be made as to whether or not significant changes could, or should be introduced into aircraft scheduled to enter service in the 1980s. Some of the information now presented has been published previously by my colleagues engaged on the programme. I make no apology for this, since any story worth telling is also worth repeating — and perhaps embellishing in the process.

Abstract

PREDOMINANT areas of concern to the Licensing Authority with relation to the above conference were defined as the maintenance requirements and procedures relating to Transport and Aerial Work Category aircraft, with particular reference to large transport types and helicopters. All UK transport operators must hold an air operators certificate and it is the responsibility of the Airworthiness Division of the CAA to set the maintenance requirements and standards and the subsequent monitoring. The importance of control procedures cannot be over‐emphasised and it is considered by the CAA that work planning play a major role in maintenance and is a key activity for a successful and safe maintenance operation. The legal liability problem is making itself felt in all aspects of aircraft maintenance work as well as design engineering and makes vital the meeting of all legal requirements including appropriate history records.
