Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe development of Russian mutual fund (MF) market, to suggest and apply methodology of statistical analysis of management quality, to evaluate profitability and risks of the market. Design/methodology/approach – Statistical research applies: descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, cluster analysis, ratings, transition probability, optimal portfolio theory.

Findings

Russian mutual market is growing both in number and in aggregate value of net assets. Profitability and risks of the market are high.

Research limitations/implications

Statistical research was fulfilled on the data for 2004‐2006.

Practical implications

The results of the investigation are useful for investors and for managers of the funds.

Originality/value

The paper represents an attempt of statistical investigation of Russian MF market, its profitability and risks, classification and rating of MFs and analysis of rating stability.

Abstract

Purpose

This study analyzed the relationship between mobile financial services (MFS) usage and customer satisfaction with MFS in Bangladesh, considering perception, purpose of use and technical challenges as the primary factors influencing customer satisfaction with MFS. The aim is to determine the factors most influencing the use of MFS.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 400 MFS users through a structured web survey using snowball sampling that is consistent with the nature of MFS users who are difficult to identify or locate. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the data and evaluate the reliability and validity of the measurement model.

Findings

The results show that customers’ perceptions and satisfaction significantly impact their intention to use MFS. Specifically, customers’ perceptions strongly influence their satisfaction with MFS, and the purpose of use significantly predicts both perception and satisfaction. Technical problems and challenges were found to have no significant impact on satisfaction levels, but other factors were more critical. Furthermore, the integration of innovative technological solutions is crucial for fostering sustainability in MFS, as it enhances reliability and efficiency while minimizing environmental footprints.

Research limitations/implications

The study was conducted in a single country, relied on self-reported data, and used a cross-sectional design, which limits the ability to draw causal inferences. Future research could explore the factors that influence customer satisfaction with MFS in different countries and regions and incorporate additional variables to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the drivers of customer satisfaction with MFS.

Originality/value

This study significantly contributes by extending the technology acceptance model (TAM) framework with the innovation resistance theory, offering a nuanced understanding of MFS adoption. The findings challenge conventional wisdom, highlighting the limited impact of technical problems on satisfaction and emphasizing the central role of user perceptions in shaping satisfaction and intention to use.

Abstract

Purpose

This study attempts to examine the relationship between reliable big and cloud data analytics capabilities (RB&CDACs) and comparative advantages (CA) of manufacturing firms (MFs) in the Middle East region as developing countries using green product innovation (GPI) and green process innovations (GPrI) mediating factors, further assess the role of data-driven competitive sustainability factor as a moderated factor.

Design/methodology/approach

436 useable online surveys were analyzed using the quantitative approach for the data-gathering process, applying structural equation modeling in the Smart-PLS program as an analysis tool. The sample unit for analysis included all middle- and senior-level managers and employees within MFs. The authors performed convergent validity and discriminant validity tests, bootstrapping also was applied. The authors included GPI and GPrI as mediating factors while using data-driven competitive sustainability as a moderated factor.

Findings

The findings of this study indicated that there is a positive significant effect in the relationship between reliable big and cloud data analytics capabilities and comparative advantages, which is supported by the formulated hypothesis. Furthermore, the findings confirmed that there was a positive and significant effect through the mediating factors (i.e. GPI and GPrI) on comparative advantage, additionally, it confirmed and supported that the moderating factor represented by data-driven competitive advantage suitability has significant effect as well.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations represented by using only one type of methodological approach (i.e. quantitative), further, it was conducted on only Asian countries in the Middle East region.

Originality/value

This piece of work improved the proposed conceptual research model and included several factors such as reliable big and cloud data analytics capabilities, comparative advantage, data-driven competitive sustainability, GPI and GPrI. This research offered new and valuable information and findings for managers, practitioners and decision-makers in the MFs in the Middle East region as a road map and gaudiness for the importance to apply these factors in their firms for enhancing the comparative advantages in their firms. Further, this research fills the gap in SCM literature and makes a bridge of knowledge and contribution to the existence of previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study tries to investigate and examine the extent of power dynamics of diverse actors in supply chains (SCs) in affecting the (un)stable connections within the logistics service providers (LSPs) triad in manufacturing firms (MFs) in Australia as a developed country.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a qualitative research approach by conducting 28 face-to-face semi-structured interviews, which was performed over a five-month period, between May and October 2022 with the targeted respondents via several Case MFs studies focusing on the triadic SC relationships through the power dynamics of LSPs (e.g. Case 1/MF-A, Case 2/MF-B, Case 3/MF-C, Case 4/MF-D and Case 5/MF-E) in order to gather primary data from the perspectives of logistics service clients, providers and suppliers that are dealing with MFs in Australia country. Interviewees were selected based on their knowledge, professional, expertise and tasks that are related to the study context if they are from MFs and/or LSPs. The researchers performed NVivo 12 Software as a tool for analyzing the collected primary data from the targeted interviewees, thus using a purposive sampling approach. This study constitutes a cornerstone for a conceptual exploration of the field of B2B and as it expands existing fields of broadcasting and investigation that focus on B2C within the manufacturing firms' context.

Findings

The findings clearly show the importance of stable purchase volume and resource ability for a focal company in the logistics triad. This leads it to have a strong long-term relationship through monitoring its partners and curbing evolutions in different dyads.

Practical implications

Identifying influential factors offers complementary insights to practitioners for depicting the SC relationship dynamics using the dominant power used by logistics service providers. Such findings encourage investigating an issues in emerging countries.

Originality/value

The study provides an extending novel piece of work on how to establish the relational embeddedness of two dyads through the power dynamics of the dominant player represented by LSPs that can significantly affect the triadic SC relationships in manufacturing firms (MFs). Such a perspective seems not to be similar to the classical standpoint in the SCM literature, in which the LSPs as a dominant and dynamic power derived from bridging the customer-supplier sustainable dyads relationship in the MFs context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study tries to examine how supply chain (SC) absorptive capacity (AC), SC ambidexterity, SC risk mitigation and supply chain agility (SCA) affect SC efficacy (SCE) in manufacturing firms (MFs) in the Middle East region.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a quantitative approach through a survey-based study, 1,004 questionnaires were distributed to the MFs that are listed in the chambers of the industries of Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in the Middle East region, with 239 useable and valid responses retrieved for analysis, representing a 23.8% response rate. The main respondents were chief executive managers, operations managers, managers and logistics managers from both mid and top levels. The conceptual model was tested by using a hypothesis-testing deductive approach. The findings are based on covariance-based analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) using partial least squares-SEM (PLS-SEM) software.

Findings

This study illustrates a significant relationship between SC AC, SC ambidexterity, SC risk mitigation and SCA on SCE. Further, the findings indicate that there is a significant effect of SC risk mitigation as a mediating factor in the relationship between SC AC, and SC ambidexterity on SCE directly and indirectly, as well through a moderating effect of SCA in these relations. Finally, there is a significant direct and indirect effect of SCA in the relationship between SC AC and SC ambidexterity on SCE as a moderating factor.

Originality/value

This study presents theoretical and empirical insights that both SC risk mitigation and SCA are proper logistics features for mediating and moderating extends the literature by adding a positive role of SC AC and SC ambidextrousness in mitigating SC risks. However, this study adds up the SC literature by evidencing moderating role of SCA between the absorptive capacities, ambidexterity on SCE. Such findings of this study can provide insightful implications for managers and practitioners at different levels in and efficacy among MFs (MFs, stakeholders and policymakers regarding the importance of using the three mentioned enablers on SCE) in MFs, particularly in the Middle Eastern firms and in developing countries in general East region.

Abstract

Purpose

Manufacturing firms (MFs) nowadays are struggling to design and maintain an integrated product-service offer. This paper aims to explore the role of the supply chain (SC) in the design of the Product-Service System (PSS). In particular, the study focuses on the Design for Supply Chain (DfSC) approach in order to understand its role and contribution to the Design for Product Service Supportability (DfPSSu) approach in supporting PSS design.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the multiple-case study approach, this paper used in-depth-interviews method to collect primary data from four multinational car manufacturers and two academic researchers.

Findings

The study reveals how a better design of the SC is required for the development of a service supportability approach that, in turn, facilitates the design of the PSS. Additionally, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies support MFs to analyse the ongoing development of the PSS business model. Finally, a better design of PSS is essential for strengthening the integration of Product and Service Offerings.

Practical implications

This study suggests that MFs can build dynamic SC capabilities to deal with fundamental changes that occurred when adopting servitization.

Originality/value

This paper is among the first attempts to study the design process of the PSS business model in a real business context taking into account different design strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

Extreme support vector regression (ESVR) has been widely used in the design, analysis and optimization of engineering systems of its fast training speed and good computational ability. However, the ESVR model is only able to utilize one-fidelity information of engineering system. To solve this issue, this paper extends extreme support vector regression (ESVR) to a multi-fidelity surrogate (MFS) model which can make use of a few expensive but higher-fidelity (HF) samples and a lot of inaccurate but cheap low-fidelity (LF) samples, named ESVR-MFS.

Design/methodology/approach

In the ESVR-MFS model, a kernel matrix is designed to evaluate the relationship between the HF and LF samples. The root mean square error of HF samples is used as the training error metric, and the optimal hyper-parameters of the kernel matrix are obtained through a heuristic algorithm.

Findings

A number of numerical problems and three engineering problems are used to compare the ESVR-MFS model with the single-fidelity ESVR model and two benchmark MFS models. The results show that the ESVR-MFS model exhibits competitive performance in both numerical cases and practical cases tested in this work.

Practical implications

The proposed approach exhibits great capability for practical multi-fidelity engineering design problems.

Originality/value

A MFS model is proposed based on ESVR, which can make full use of the advantages of both HF data and LF data to achieve optimal results at same or lower cost.

Abstract

Purpose

Information system continuance model has been used in a number of studies to explain information system continuance in different contexts. However, very little research attention has been given to continuous use of mobile financial services (MFS). The purpose of this study is to fill this research gap by identifying the main factors that influence the continual use of MFS.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample was randomly taken from MFS registered accounts or mobile wallets. A five-point Likert scale survey was conducted in Ghana. Structural equation modelling was used to test the data. Constructs such as continual use, satisfaction, perceived usefulness and confirmation were adapted from information system continuance model to suit the requirement of MFS. A pilot study was then carried out after the questionnaire was developed to gauge the appropriateness of the survey questions.

Findings

Results from the survey indicated that user satisfaction has the greatest impact on the continual use of mobile financial services. Good agent quality and satisfaction were the second most influential determinant. Satisfaction was, in turn, confirmed to be determined by perceived usefulness. Another important contributor to MFS continual use was found to be perceived ease of use (PEOU) with an impact surprisingly higher than that of perceived usefulness. There was a significant impact of good agent quality on satisfaction, which could be attributed to the characteristics of the technology for the study.

Research limitations/implications

Although a relatively high R2 (71%) was indicated by the proposed model, there is need for additional factors to be identified to improve the ability to predict and explain the continual use of MFS. A longitudinal study would have enhanced the identification of determinants and the understanding of their inter-relationships to influence MFS continual use.

Practical implications

To ensure continual use of MFS, PEOU as identified by the study is important to ensure that customers can use the service with little effort. Good agent quality can promote PEOU in the sense that competent agents can render relevant tutorials to customers’ right after the registration process. This will address a major barrier to continual use, which is the lack of understanding of how MFS operate.

Social implications

This study contributes to ensuring financial inclusion such that the unbanked can have access to financial services and also improve digital inclusion.

Originality/value

The study provides empirical evidence to support the substantive differences between acceptance and continual use behaviours, integrating the constructs of good agent quality and PEOU into our understanding of information system continual use literature. The authors also theorized and evaluated a model of MFS continual use.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the earnings management (EM) practices of Portuguese municipal firms (MFs), which are a special type of public-sector entity.

Design/methodology/approach

MFs are identified using a dedicated list maintained by the Portuguese Government. Accounting data are collected from the Bureau Van Dijk's AMADEUS database. The Burgstahler and Dichev's (1997) methodology and panel data regression methods are employed to examine the EM practices of Portuguese MFs.

Findings

Portuguese MFs manage earnings to report small and positive net earnings and to avoid disclosing losses. There is evidence that such companies are more likely to engage in EM practices when facing higher liquidation risk and financial leverage, lower liquidity and in certain periods of the local election cycle.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies investigating the EM practices of MFs, directly contributing to the literature that explores the relationship between state ownership and the quality of financial statements. The paper has important implications for the MFs' stakeholders, especially regulators and supervising authorities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare the ability of the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) and Farmer's fall-risk assessment tool (FFAT) to identify correlations between risk factors and falls among older adult long-term care (LTC) facility residents.

Design/methodology/approach

This was a correlational retrospective study. 200 medical records of older adults hospitalized in a LTC facility in central Israel, from January 2017 to January 2018, were examined.

Findings

Of all the residents, 75% and 99.5% of the residents were identified as having a high fall risk according to the MFS and FFAT, respectively. Only 12.5% of residents actually fell. MFS score was weakly correlated with actual falls (odds ratio = 1.035). It was also found that all fallers fell during their first week at the facility.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should explore the ability of the tools to capture changes in the fall risk by repeat assessments, as this has not been examined in the present study.

Practical implications

The MFS and FFAT tool may have little value in assessing fall risk in older adult LTC facility residents. Therefore, nurses should perform a clinical evaluation of each individual patient. In addition, nurses should place a particular emphasis on fall risk and prevention during the first week following admission.

Originality/value

The findings of the present study raise doubts regarding the utility of the common practice of assessing fall risk in older adult LTC facility residents using the tools MFS and the FFAT, thus emphasizing the need to adopt a different approach.
