Abstract

We propose a model of multidomain leadership and explain how it drives leader and follower well-being and stress. Multidomain leadership engagement, or the application of leader knowledge, skills, and abilities across domains, results in either an enriching or impairing experience for the leader. The result is influenced by the leader’s self-regulatory strength and self-awareness, as well as the amount of social support and domain similarity. An enriching experience leads to increased self-efficacy, self-regulatory strength, and self-awareness, which in turn leads to increased leader (and subsequently follower) well-being and reduced leader (and subsequently follower) stress. Enriching experiences also tend to drive further engagement and enriching experiences, while impairing experiences do the opposite. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a hybrid multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique for performance evaluation of banks in which the banks are assessed and ranked according to the criteria of the balanced scorecard (BSC) methodology and corporate social responsibility (CSR) views.

Design/methodology/approach

To clarify the performance of the proposed model, the MCDM technique was implemented in four banks in Iran as a pilot. First, proper criteria for banking industry are identified considering BSC and CSR. Consequently, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and modified digital logic (MDL) techniques are used to determine the weights of criteria. The banks are ranked by fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) and fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR). Using a combination of these techniques, four methods, namely, AHP-FTOPSIS, AHP-FVIKOR, MDL-FTOPSIS and MDL-FVIKOR, are obtained, each of which provides a different set of rankings for banks. Eventually, the obtained ranks are integrated using the Copeland method.

Findings

The results showed that the return on investment, debt ratio and lower energy consumption criteria are the most important, and enhancement of brand value, increasing customer loyalty and environmental care criteria have the lowest percentage of importance. Also, the final bank ranking is determined by the proposed method.

Originality/value

This paper identifies 6 criteria and 25 sub-criteria for evaluating the banks considering BSC and CSR viewpoints including some new sub-criteria that has not been considered before. Moreover, these hybrid approaches and especially MDL techniques have not been used by previous researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an analysis of securities class action filings in 2017 along with related trends over time and a comprehensive current view of the securities class action landscape.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper details 2017 securities class actions and related trends by measures including the number and size of filings; market capitalization losses; litigation likelihood for US versus non-US exchange-listed companies; status and outcomes of filings (settled, dismissed, continuing); core versus merger and acquisition filings; individual versus institutional investors as lead plaintiffs; and concentration of class action activity by industry sector, stock exchange and court circuit.

Findings

The number of federal securities class action lawsuits filed in 2017 reached a record high for the second straight year. The jump was spurred by a sharp increase in lawsuits targeting mergers and acquisitions. The 412 securities class action filings in 2017 represented a more than 50 per cent increase from the previous record of 271 filings in 2016.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the Oktoberfest context and memory-dominant logic (MDL), the purpose of the study included assessing drivers of the perceptions of experience uniqueness; if these drivers and experience uniqueness perceptions transformed in memorable experiences; and if memorable experiences translated into enhanced life satisfaction. Based on these relationships, a typology and theory extension is provided integrating practical examples.

Design/methodology/approach

A five-factor model was tested using exploratory structural equation modeling and structural equation modeling; the factors included food and beverage quality; connectedness; experience uniqueness; meaningfulness and memorability; and life satisfaction.

Findings

Guests connectedness impacted life satisfaction perceptions. Positive perceptions of the experience uniqueness resulted in higher memorability. Food and beverage quality impacted both memorability and life satisfaction. Higher memorability resulted in higher life satisfaction. Attendee nationality impacted the relationship among several of the study’s factors.

Research limitations/implications

Progress was made on assessing the MDL concepts and translating them into quantitative values. Study results supported the impact of connectedness and product quality on perceptions of Oktoberfest experience uniqueness along with the impact of meaningfulness of the experience on life satisfaction perceptions. The authors acknowledged limitations because of one Oktoberfest beer tent focus and the weaknesses of survey methodology, limiting pre- and post-activity reporting and future investigation of moderating effects.

Practical implications

The consideration of higher order impacts (i.e. life satisfaction) is needed when delivering experiences and to entice loyalty and social media apostles. Consumers’ experience connectedness with high-quality perceptions and unique service design are likely to translate to memorable experiences, leading to life satisfaction perceptions. The concept of creating the experience “with” the customer appears to be a key aspect of memorability.

Originality/value

These results tested aspects of MDL and a typology emerged of ideal types as a modified MDL framework driven by two continua: transactional vs experiential quality and experiences designed “to” vs “with” customers.

Abstract

Purpose

Carbon steel has a high application rate in modern industry, but this type of steel has the defect of high wear. This study aims to improve the surface friction and wear performance of carbon steel under such working conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a dry film lubricant based on graphite powder was prepared by the ultrasonic dispersion method, and deposited on the surface of carbon steel specimens by the simple pressure spraying technology. At the same time, molybdenum disulfide and polytetrafluoroethylene dry film lubricants were developed by the same method, and the comparative experimental study on friction and wear was carried out in the end-face friction tester.

Findings

The results show that the deposition effect of graphite and molybdenum disulfide dry film lubricants on the surface of carbon steel is obviously better than that of polytetrafluoroethylene dry film lubricant. Compared with molybdenum disulfide and polytetrafluoroethylene dry film lubricant, graphite dry film lubricant has the best friction and wear performance on the surface of carbon steel. The working life of carbon steel specimens sprayed with graphite dry film lubricant decreases with the increase of pressure load and rotation speed. The combination of load and sliding speed will accelerate the transition of the coating to a stable direction. In addition, the micro lubricant particles formed in the wear process will form particle flow lubrication, and the appropriate addition of particle powder of the same material will also prolong the normal antifriction time of the lubricant.

Originality/value

These findings developed a dry film lubricant that can effectively improve the friction and wear properties of carbon steel surface.

To provide an analysis of securities class action filings in 2015 along with related trends over time and a comprehensive current view of the securities class action landscape.

Design/methodology/approach

Details 2015 securities class actions and related trends in terms of the number and size of filings; market capitalization losses; the litigation exposure of IPOs; the classification of complaints; litigation likelihood for US exchange-listed companies; resolutions (settlements, dismissals or trial verdict outcomes); timing of dismissals and settlements; filing lags; filings against foreign issuers; number of mega filings; recent rulings related to class certification; and concentration of class action activity by industry sector, stock exchange and court circuit.

Findings

The number of filings in 2015 was the largest since 2008. The Disclosure Dollar Loss Index® (DDL Index®), the Maximum Dollar Loss Index® (MDL Index®) and the number of mega filings rose sharply in 2015 after declines in 2014. The Consumer Non-Cyclical sector had the most filings in 2015 while filings against companies in the Financial sector were below historical averages. Dismissal rates appear to be trending down. The median filing lag has never been shorter than in 2015. Filings against foreign issuers remain at high levels. Filings against S&P 500 companies remained below the historical average.

Abstract

The results of trial experiments carried out with a computer simulation model of total reflection X‐ray fluorescence, TXRF system to determine optimum conditions for detecting certain elements of interest under various analytical conditions in a given ten‐element standard sample is presented in this paper. Results of these trial experiments show that the detectability of elements improved with increasing applied voltages up to about 43kV (for a Molybdenum anode TXRF spectrometer) and atomic number of elements. Variation of geometry such as the glancing incidence angle of the excitation beam reflected slight increase in minimum detection limit, MDL values as the angle of incidence is reduced from an optimum value of 1.6mradian to 1.0mradian. The nature of the sample support was observed to affect the detectability of the elements as good detection limits were obtained if gold is used as sample holder..

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare music mood perceptions of people with diverse cultural backgrounds when they interact with Chinese music. It also discusses how the results can inform the design of global music digital libraries (MDL).

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was designed based on the Music Information Retrieval Evaluation eXchange (MIREX) five-cluster mood model, to solicit mood perceptions of listeners in Hong Kong and the USA on a diverse set of Chinese music. Statistical analysis was applied to compare responses from the two user groups, with consideration of different music types and characteristics of listeners. Listeners’ textual responses were also analyzed with content coding.

Findings

Listeners from the two cultural groups made different mood judgments on all but one type of Chinese music. Hong Kong listeners reached higher levels of agreement on mood judgments than their US counterparts. Gender, age and familiarity with the songs were related to listeners’ mood judgment to some extent.

Practical implications

The MIREX five-cluster model may not be sufficient for representing the mood of Chinese music. Refinements are suggested. MDL are recommended to differentiate tags given by users from different cultural groups, and to differentiate music types when classifying or recommending Chinese music by mood.

Originality/value

It is the first study on cross-cultural access to Chinese music in MDL. Methods and the refined mood model can be applied to cross-cultural access to other music types and information objects.

Abstract

Purpose

Hospital evaluations create competition between healthcare providers. In this study, a multi criteria decision-making (MCDM) method is used to evaluate criteria that affect hospital service quality. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Criteria affecting hospital service quality are identified. Four Iranian public hospitals are evaluated using these criteria. Four hybrid methods, including modified digital logic–technique for order of preference by similarity to an ideal solution, analytical hierarchy process–technique for order of preference by similarity to an ideal solution, analytical hierarchy process–elimination and choice expressing reality and modified digital logic–elimination and choice expressing reality are used to evaluate hospital service quality. Results are aggregated using the Copeland method and final ranks are determined.

Findings

The four main criteria for evaluating hospital service quality are: environment; responsiveness; equipment and facilities; and professional capability. Results suggest that professional capability is the most important criterion. The Copeland method, used to integrate four MCDM hybrid methods, provides the final hospital ranks.

Practical implications

The criteria the authors identified and their weight help hospital managers to achieve comprehensive organizational growth and more efficient resource usage. Moreover, the decision matrix helps managers to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Originality/value

New and comprehensive criteria are proposed for hospital quality assessments. Moreover, a new hybrid MCDM approach is used to achieve final hospital rankings.

Abstract

Purpose

The analyze phase of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) project is an important phase where the project heads and organizational directors need to select the critical issues for further improvements. The present work is primarily focused on analyze phase of LSS project to prioritize the critical to quality (CTQ) in a particular case industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The CTQ prioritization is being done based on the five evaluation criteria found from the literature. The weights of the criteria are determined through the modified digital logic (MDL) method. The identified CTQs in assembly section of case industry have been ranked through the gray relational analysis (GRA) under fuzzy environment. The results of the study have been validated using fuzzy VlseKriterijumska Optimisacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR).

Findings

It is found that the “cost” criterion is the most significant among other criteria with MDL weight of 0.3. Through fuzzy-GRA, out of ten identified CTQs, non-availability of rack system is found to be the most critical issue in assembly section of case industry. The perceptions of industrial manager and production head of case industry are strongly in favor of the obtained results and have implemented the suggested solutions.

Originality/value

To sustain in the competitive environment and produce quality product at right time, organizations need to control their CTQs as per their criticality. For this, the decision-making becomes quite complex to select the most critical factors because of the fascinating nature of various criteria and sub-criteria. The present study is the first attempt that has implemented the multi-criteria decision-making approach in analyze phase of LSS project.
