Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to assess the readiness of the Swedish manufacturing industry to implement dynamic, data-driven preventive maintenance (PM) by identifying the gap between the state of the art and the state of practice.

Design/methodology/approach

An embedded multiple case study was performed in which some of the largest companies in the discrete manufacturing industry, that is, mechanical engineering, were surveyed regarding the design of their PM programmes.

Findings

The studied manufacturing companies make limited use of the existing scientific state of the art when designing their PM programmes. They seem to be aware of the possibilities for improvement, but they also see obstacles to changing their practices according to future requirements.

Practical implications

The results of this study will benefit both industry professionals and academicians, setting the initial stage for the development of data-driven, diversified and dynamic PM programmes.

Originality/Value

First and foremost, this study maps the current state and practice in PM planning among some of the larger automotive manufacturing industries in Sweden. This work reveals a gap between the state of the art and the state of practice in the design of PM programmes. Insights regarding this gap show large improvement potentials which may prove important for academics as well as practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

Correct and well-planned maintenance based on modern global methods directly affects efficiency, quality, direct production costs, reliability and profitability. The selection of an optimal policy for maintenance can be a good solution for industrial units. In fact, by managing constraints such as costs, working hours and human workforce causing sudden equipment failure, production and performance can increase.

Design/methodology/approach

Therefore, in this research a model was presented to select the best maintenance strategy at Kaghaz Kar Kasra Co of Iran. In this study, it was tried to integrate the two techniques of goal programming and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) to prioritize maintenance strategies. First, all factors affecting maintenance were identified, and based on the Best Worst Method (BWM) the degree of their importance was determined.

Findings

After the evaluation, only 14 criteria in the 4 dimensions of cost, added value, safety and feasibility were selected. The highest points were given to the criteria of equipment cost and depreciation, equipment and personnel performance, equipment installation time and technical feasibility, respectively. In the next stage, using the TOPSIS method the item of maintenance strategy was ranked, and the 3 strategies of preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PDM) and corrective maintenance (CM) were chosen. Modeling was performed utilizing a goal programming approach to select the optimal maintenance strategy for 13 devices. All the technical specifications, cost limits and the device time were extracted. After the model was finished and solved the best item for each device was specified.

Abstract

In 1981, the International Labour Office in Geneva began receiving exciting news from the National Productivity Cente (NPC) of Ethiopia about its results‐oriented maintenance management programmes. NPC was achieving measurable success in helping almost 50 firms solve maintenance problems. Over 360 people from supervisors to plant managers and ministry officials had been trained to identify maintenance problems, find and carry out solutions. Hundreds of recommendations for improved maintenance were being tested and implemented, and many of these solutions were achieving measurable results in the form of increased output, reduced down‐time, improved quality, fewer rejected products, fewer imported spare parts and longer machine life. Several of the factories had estimated savings of over $1.2 million in the first year of the programme. The costs of the training, consulting and implementation were much less than the first year's estimated savings. The cost/benefit ratio, even by rough estimates, appeared to be at least 8 to 1.

Abstract

Purpose

While most studies utilise quantitative methodologies to examine issues relevant to sexual offending behaviour, such as treatment programmes and risk assessments; substantially fewer studies have utilised qualitative methods, and specifically Layder’s Adaptive Theory (AT) as a methodology; and there is a paucity of research examining community maintenance programmes altogether. The purpose of this paper is to report on the use of AT to the understanding of the significance of community maintenance programmes for high-risk sexual offenders.

Design/methodology/approach

Using AT as a unique framework, this study examined an Australian sample of services providers and high-risk sexual offenders participating in a community maintenance programme. In particular, the current research aimed to develop an understanding of community maintenance programmes for released sexual offenders, in a bid to develop a theoretical framework for these programmes. The research had three subject groups, service providers, programme participants who had not reoffended and programme participants who had sexually reoffended.

Findings

It appears that this methodology is a useful approach to studies within forensic rehabilitation and offender research. Common, reoccurring themes have been gathered through this approach, which would not have been possible with a quantitative methodology.

Research limitations/implications

While this research methodology was applied to a small sample size, its use suggested that AT was an informative and useful research approach to utilise in offender research more broadly, yielding rich in-depth information.

Practical implications

Utilising AT provided an in-depth understanding and exploration of experiences for offender populations as well as staff delivering programmes, which enhances the efficacy of programmes delivered by incorporating “user feedback” and allows programme developers to utilise such feedback to improve programmes. An AT approach to offender rehabilitation has been useful in providing exploratory information in the absence of any conceptual or theoretical frameworks and with a very little extant information. Given maintenance programmes are quite understudied, this approach allowed for common themes to emerge in order to guide future research as well as the development of a paradigm. It is worth considering the utility of this methodology for a variety of forensic research, particularly areas which remain understudied.

Social implications

Sexual offending behaviour is a significant societal concern. A better understanding of what makes programmes more effective for those who use them and run them, will assist in reducing recidivism, which will benefit the community at large.

Originality/value

Layder’s AT has not been used with an offender population in the past, and specifically within the sexual offending realm, thus this paper offers a unique and effective approach to offender research.

Abstract

Maintenance control plays a key role in achieving the stated objective of effectiveness and efficiency of the maintenance system. In a recent paper, Gits proposed a reference framework that guides in the design and structuring of maintenance control. The framework is conceptual in nature and its use in practice is limited. Poses Gits’ framework as a set of mathematical programming models. Extends some of Gits’ procedure for maintenance control, then outlines the required expansion in the maintenance management information system (MMIS) in order to provide the needed data to execute the models. The models provide operational plans and schedules ready for implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

Total productive maintenance (TPM) is a very powerful program of equipment maintenance in manufacturing industries and is a direct part of total quality management (TQM). In the manufacturing industry, TPM is a very effective tool for improving product quality as well as productivity. A good number of manufacturing industries have so far adopted a TPM program in countries like Japan, as a part of their quality drive. However, in many manufacturing industries in India it has not been successfully implemented. For successful and effective implementation of TPM in manufacturing industries in India, understanding and awareness of the various possible causes behind its failure is essential. This paper aims to address this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

In this general review paper, after reviewing literature the authors consolidate, highlight and classify the probable reasons responsible for the failures of TPM in many Indian manufacturing industries.

Findings

In this paper, the various causes of failure of TPM in a number of manufacturing industries have been classified into three major categories of problems or issues at three different stages: organizational issues during the foundation stage; TPM implementation issues during the formation stage; and operational issues during the TPM running stage.

Practical implications

The recommended guidelines may definitely contribute to the Indian industry and also industries in other developing countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Consequently, the work has economic and commercial impacts. Economic, because it would allow to improve the productivity of the companies, and commercial, because it would facilitate the interchange and the positioning of products. In addition, it can have a high impact on the industrial relations of the workers and unions.

Originality/value

If management is aware of such probable problems, and becomes careful about them, the TPM programme can also be widely and effectively adopted in many Indian manufacturing industries, and they can achieve improvement in business competitiveness through improved product quality and increased productivity.

Abstract

Over the past decade the education system in the UK has been heavily criticized for its irrelevance to industry. Employers, in particular, have been concerned that the values and products of the system do not meet their requirements. Meeting these requirements presents many challenges and, indeed, raises many fundamental questions about the aims and purposes of education and how it should relate to industry. Although maintenance education in the UK is still in its infancy, the work undertaken at the MIRCE Centre of University of Exeter has demonstrated that education and industry can work closely together to develop programmes which meet the demands for highly skilled and trained maintenance engineers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and to present an overview of TPM implementation practices adopted by the manufacturing organizations. It also seeks to highlight appropriate enablers and success factors for eliminating barriers in successful TPM implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper systematically categorizes the published literature and then analyzes and reviews it methodically.

Findings

The paper reveals the important issues in Total Productive Maintenance ranging from maintenance techniques, framework of TPM, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), TPM implementation practices, barriers and success factors in TPM implementation, etc. The contributions of strategic TPM programmes towards improving manufacturing competencies of the organizations have also been highlighted here.

Practical implications

The literature on classification of Total Productive Maintenance has so far been very limited. The paper reviews a large number of papers in this field and presents the overview of various TPM implementation practices demonstrated by manufacturing organizations globally. It also highlights the approaches suggested by various researchers and practitioners and critically evaluates the reasons behind failure of TPM programmes in the organizations. Further, the enablers and success factors for TPM implementation have also been highlighted for ensuring smooth and effective TPM implementation in the organizations.

Originality/value

The paper contains a comprehensive listing of publications on the field in question and their classification according to various attributes. It will be useful to researchers, maintenance professionals and others concerned with maintenance to understand the significance of TPM.
