Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to generate knowledge of the impact of different virtual reality (VR) set-ups in tourism promotion regarding destination image, place attachment and behavioural intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a comparative study of the impact of different visualisation technologies (video, immersive VR and multisensory immersive VR) to promote tourism destinations. The study’s dependent variables are destination image, place attachment and behaviour intention.

Findings

Results show that VR content impacts these variables. Multisensory immersive VR is the preferred content type for destination promotion. It is also evidenced that female participants scored each variable higher than male participants. Males reported higher scores on the video set-up for destination image and place attachment. Behavioural intention reported higher values in the video when compared to immersive VR in both sexes.

Practical implications

This paper concludes that there is a preference towards multisensory set-ups, which suggests that incorporating audiovisual and sensory elements can significantly enhance the effectiveness of VR experiences in attracting and engaging potential tourists.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the scarce body of knowledge regarding the impact of different VR factors on tourism promotion, including the multisensory VR component.

Abstract

Purpose

On the ground of the Hopf bifurcation theory derived by Hassard et al., the purpose of this paper is to investigate the weakly nonlinear dynamics of transverse rough‐surface short journal bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

By application of the stochastic model of rough surfaces, developed by Christensen and Tonder, the roughness effects of transverse surface patterns on the bifurcation behaviors close to the Hopf bifurcation point are investigated.

Findings

It is found that the dynamic behavior of transverse rough‐surface short journal bearings can display Hopf bifurcation phenomena. Comparing with the case of isotropic rough‐surface bearing by Lin, under the same parameters, the effects of transverse surface roughness provide a reduced sub‐critical Hopf bifurcation region as well as an increased super‐critical Hopf bifurcation region. In addition, the effects of transverse surface roughness result in a lower stability‐threshold critical speed for both the sub‐critical bifurcation profile and the super‐critical bifurcation profile.

Originality/value

The present study, associated with the results of Hopf bifurcation regions and periodic orbits, can provide useful information for engineers when the transverse surface roughness effects and the bifurcation behavior are considered in a journal bearing system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to construct and analyze a parameter uniform higher-order scheme for singularly perturbed delay parabolic problem (SPDPP) of convection-diffusion type with a multiple interior turning point.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors construct a higher-order numerical method comprised of a hybrid scheme on a generalized Shishkin mesh in space variable and the implicit Euler method on a uniform mesh in the time variable. The hybrid scheme is a combination of simple upwind scheme and the central difference scheme.

Findings

The proposed method has a convergence rate of order O(N2L2+Δt). Further, Richardson extrapolation is used to obtain convergence rate of order two in the time variable. The hybrid scheme accompanied with extrapolation is second-order convergent in time and almost second-order convergent in space up to a logarithmic factor.

Originality/value

A class of SPDPPs of convection-diffusion type with a multiple interior turning point is studied in this paper. The exact solution of the considered class of problems exhibit two exponential boundary layers. The theoretical results are supported via conducting numerical experiments. The results obtained using the proposed scheme are also compared with the simple upwind scheme.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and development of “Pylon-Climber II”, a 5-DOF biped climbing robot (degree of freedom – DOF) for moving on the external surface of a tower and assisting the electricians to complete some maintenance tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper introduces a pole-climbing robot, which consists of a 5-DOF mechanical arm and two novel grippers. The gripper is composed of a two-finger clamping module and a retractable L-shaped hook module. The robot is symmetrical in structure, and the rotary joint for connecting two arms is driven by a linear drive mechanism.

Findings

The developed prototype proved a new approach for the inspection and maintenance of the electricity pylon. The gripper can reliably grasp the angle bars with different specifications by using combined movement of the two-finger clamping module and the retractable L-shaped hook module and provide sufficient adhesion force for the Pylon-Climber II.

Practical implications

The clamping experiments of the gripper and the climbing experiments of the robot were carried out on a test tower composed of some angle bars with different specification.

Originality/value

This paper includes the design and development of a 5-DOF biped climbing robot for electricity pylon maintenance. The climbing robot can move on the external surface of the electric power tower through grasping the angle bar alternatively. The gripper that is composed of a two-finger gripping module and a retractable L-shaped hook module is very compact and can provide reliable adhesion force for the climbing robot.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the singular Hopf bifurcation and mixed mode oscillations (MMOs) in the perturbed Bonhoeffer-van der Pol (BVP) circuit. There is a singular periodic orbit constructed by the switching between the stable focus and large amplitude relaxation cycles. Using a generalized fast/slow analysis, the authors show the generation mechanism of two distinct kinds of MMOs.

Design/methodology/approach

The parametric modulation can be used to generate complicated dynamics. The BVP circuit is constructed as an example for second-order differential equation with periodic perturbation. Then the authors draw the bifurcation parameter diagram in terms of a containing two attractive regions, i.e. the stable relaxation cycle and the stable focus. The transition mechanism and characteristic features are investigated intensively by one-fast/two-slow analysis combined with bifurcation theory.

Findings

Periodic perturbation can suppress nonlinear circuit dynamic to a singular periodic orbit. The combination of these small oscillations with the large amplitude oscillations that occur due to canard cycles yields such MMOs. The results connect the theory of the singular Hopf bifurcation enabling easier calculations of where the oscillations occur.

Originality/value

By treating the perturbation as the second slow variable, the authors obtain that the MMOs are due to the canards in a supercritical case or in a subcritical case. This study can reveal the transition mechanism for multi-time scale characteristics in perturbed circuit. The information gained from such results can be extended to periodically perturbed circuits.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to obtain explicit formulas to determine the stability of periodic solutions to the new system and study the extent of the stability of those periodic solutions and the direction of bifurcated periodic solutions. More than that, the authors did a numerical simulation to confirm the results that the authors obtained and presented through numerical analysis are the periodic and stable solutions and when the system returns again to the state of out of control.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors studied local bifurcation and verified its occurrence after choosing the delay as a parameter of control in Zhou 2019’s dynamical system with delayed feedback control. The authors investigated the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem.

Findings

The occurrence of local Hopf bifurcations at the Zhou's system is verified. By using the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem, the authors obtain the explicit formulas for determining the stability and direction of bifurcated periodic solutions. The theoretical results obtained and the corresponding numerical simulations showed that the chaos phenomenon in the Zhou's system can be controlled using a method of time-delay auto-synchronization.

Originality/value

As the delay increases further, the numerical simulations show that the periodic solution disappears, and the chaos attractor appears again. The obtained results can also be applied to the control and anti-control of chaos phenomena of system (1). There are still abundant and complex dynamical behaviors, and the topological structure of the new system should be completely and thoroughly investigated and exploited.
