Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this paper is to introduce the articles of this theme issue and explain the pertinence of the strategic question.

Design/methodology/approach

A brief context for the strategic question is provided, as well as the issue alignment and a content analysis of the articles selected.

Findings

The profile of current and future tourists is changing. Travel consumers now want and expect accurate information to guide their choices, and these are increasingly based on quality, experimentation, willingness to undertake active holidays and to travel to sites with diverse and unique tourism products.

Practical implications

Collectively, the articles in this theme issue provide rich insights on key trends impacting the worldwide tourism industry, as well as suggestions on how to explore the opportunities arising from the highly competitive tourism markets. Proposals on scanning the tourism business environment are also presented and their importance discussed and illustrated.

Originality/value

From various angles of analysis, the final articles for this issue explore the trends and issues affecting the tourism industry, as well as approaches to scan the tourism business environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to critically review the contributions made by the authors of the papers selected for this global trends issue and to present the main lessons for tourist organizations and destinations.

Design/methodology/approach

A content analysis of the papers presented in this global trends issue was performed so as to identify the most relevant contributions made by the authors.

Findings

Despite the questions and uncertainties about the future of travel and tourism, one thing is certain – it is up to us to take a conscious, thoughtful attitude, to fully enjoy destinations while conserving the natural and built heritage for future generations.

Originality/value

A summary of the key ideas in the articles comprising this global trends issue is presented, allowing for the identification of good practices by organizations and destinations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to critically review the contributions made by the writing team for this theme issue and to present the main ideas, lines of action and implications for a model of inclusive tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

A content analysis of the papers selected for this issue was performed so as to identify the most relevant contributions made by the authors.

Findings

From the analysis of the papers in this theme issue, it is clear that destinations need to reflect on and work towards a new model of tourism – more sustainable, innovative, responsible and supportive – adding value to the tourism ecosystem.

Originality/value

The papers in this theme issue shed light on the importance for tourist destinations of adopting a more inclusive approach. All tourist actors need to maintain their commitment to work together to promote universal accessibility and inclusiveness and this can be characterized via a new model of positive tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to critically review the contributions made by the authors of the papers selected for this theme issue and to present the main lessons learnt, recommendations and key points for action by tourist destinations.

Design/methodology/approach

Content analysis of the papers presented in this theme issue was performed so as to review the most relevant contributions made by authors.

Findings

The massification of tourism is becoming a headache for many destinations. Portugal, increasingly fashionable, is no exception. Rising demand may seem very positive, at first glance, but it becomes a problem when there is no control or action plans that monitor results and anticipate growth.

Practical implications

This study provides knowledge about the perceptions and satisfaction of tourists while visiting Portugal, including the main aspects they valued and their satisfaction about Portugal’s main attributes.

Originality/value

A summary of the key ideas in the articles comprising this theme issue is presented, allowing for the identification of good practices by organizations and destinations that deal with the exponential growth of tourism that we are living today.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to critically review the contributions made by this theme issue to the literature by examining key trends in worldwide tourism and approaches for scanning its business environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A critical content analysis of the articles selected for the theme issue was undertaken.

Findings

From the various contributions made to the theme issue, it is possible to identify some major challenges that the tourism industry will face, these resulting from new tourist profiles, a growing middle-class, political tensions and terrorism, technological evolution and the decline in customers’ loyalty.

Research limitations/implications

Collectively, the articles in this theme issue provide rich insights on key trends impacting the worldwide tourism industry, as well as suggestions on how to explore the opportunities arising from the highly competitive tourism markets. The complexity of the information generated today call for innovative approaches on scanning the tourism business environment, to overcome the financial and operational constraints that those processes normally imply.

Originality/value

The articles selected for this theme issue present state-of-the-art research and experts’ viewpoints on tourism trends. These allow a deeper understanding of the challenges tourism organisations and destinations face today and the best-suited answers to explore the opportunities they provide.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to characterize the profile of non-resident female tourists visiting Porto and North of Portugal (PNP) and highlights the importance and evolution of the women travel market and its segmentation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents and discusses trends and segmentation in women travel market and the results of a survey on the profile of international female tourists to PNP.

Findings

This study identifies the key differences of male and female travelers to PNP and confirms that segments that have been highlighted as emerging markets in the literature such as businesswomen, solo travelling and girlfriend getaway are all present in this market. It also presents and discusses the profile of female tourists to PNP.

Practical implications

This study provides knowledge about the women travel market to PNP, thus enabling decision makers to better tailor their marketing strategies to this segment.

Originality/value

This paper seeks to illustrate the importance of the female travel market and characterize the profile of non-resident women tourists visiting PNP.
