Abstract

Purpose

An improved adaptive finite element analysis based on local error estimate is proposed via the element energy projection (EEP) technique. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned idea.

Design/methodology/approach

The computational region for a posteriori error estimation based on EEP method is further confined to a critical set of local elements generated in the previous adaptive step, enhancing efficiency while maintaining accuracy. The adaptive procedure incorporated with hierarchical mesh refinement is then developed.

Findings

The effectiveness of the improved error estimation of the overall adaptive analysis is confirmed by several benchmark examples. The results show that the shrinkage of the local computational region has little negative influence on the accuracy of a posteriori error estimation, thus yielding an improved adaptive procedure with simplified logic and reduced cost.

Originality/value

By localizing the computational region for error estimation, two crucial but cumbersome tricks, i.e. treatments of virtual elements and hanging nodes, are removed, giving the proposed approach full clarity and flexibility. The improved adaptive procedure characterizes simpler and faster computational algorithm and can produce results with required accuracy measured in maximum norm.

Abstract

Presents an interpolatory subdivision scheme to generate adaptively refined quadrilateral meshes which approximate a smooth surface of arbitrary topology. The described method differs significantly from classical mesh generation techniques based on spline surfaces or implicit representations since no explicit description of the limit surface is used. Instead, simple affine combinations are applied to compute new vertices if a face of the net is split. These rules are designed to guarantee asymptotic smoothness, i.e. the sequence of refined nets converges to a smooth limit surface. Subdivision techniques are useful mainly in applications where a given quadrilateral net is a coarse approximation of a surface and points on a refined grid have to be estimated. To evaluate the proposed approach, shows examples for FE‐computations on surfaces generated by this algorithm.

Abstract

Significant progress has been achieved over the last decade in the realistic animation of garments. However it is still a very costly process in terms of computational resources. Since wrinkles and vast smooth areas co-exist commonly, it is tempting to reduce computational cost by avoiding redundant tessellation at the smooth areas. In this paper we present a method for dynamic adaptation of triangular meshes suitable for the most elaborated cloth simulation approaches, such as finite-element based or alike. We use bottom-up approach to mesh refinement, which does not require precomputation and storage of multiresolution hierarchy. The hierarchy is constructed in runtime using √3-refinement rule. The hierarchy is essential to allow reverting of the refinement locally. Local mesh refinement and simplification are triggered by curvature-induced criterion, where the curvature is estimated using methods of discrete differential geometry. In the existing literature of adaptive meshes only the formulas for estimating the discrete mean curvature at the inner mesh vertices can be found. We extend it to the triangulated 2-manifolds with boundary, such as cloth meshes. The results demonstrated are the realistic animation of garment worn by a walking mannequin generated with Baraff-Witkin type cloth solver enhanced with our mesh adaptation scheme.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to describe the solution of a simple electrostatic problem using an adaptive hp‐FEM and to show the benefits of this approach. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate its superiority.

Design/methodology/approach

Adaptive hp‐FEM is used. In contrast with standard FEM, the automatic adaptivity procedure can choose from a variety of refinement candidates. An element with over estimated error can be refined in space, or its polynomial degree can be increased. Arbitrary level hanging nodes are allowed, so that no unnecessary refinements are performed in order to keep a mesh regular.

Findings

Numerical solution of a singular electrostatic problem is presented. From the comparison it can be seen that the hp‐FEM outperforms both the standard linear and quadratic elements significantly. The accuracy of an hp‐FEM solution would be hard to attain by standard means due to the limited capacity of the computer memory.

Originality/value

The paper describes results obtained from an original and innovative implementation of the adaptive hp‐FEM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the unstable propagation of parallel hydraulic fractures induced by interferences of adjacent perforation clusters and thermal diffusion. Fracture propagation in the process of multistage fracturing of a rock mass is deflected owing to various factors. Hydrofracturing of rock masses in deep tight reservoirs involves thermal diffusion, fluid flow and deformation of rock between the rock matrix and fluid in pores and fractures.

Design/methodology/approach

To study the unstable propagation behaviours of three-dimensional (3D) parallel hydraulic fractures induced by the interferences of adjacent perforation clusters and thermal diffusion, a 3D engineering-scale numerical model is established under different fracturing scenarios (sequential, simultaneous and alternate fracturing) and different perforation cluster spacings while considering the thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling effect. Stress disturbance region caused by fracture propagation in a deep tight rock mass is superimposed and overlaid with multiple fractures, resulting in a stress shadow effect and fracture deflection.

Findings

The results show that the size of the stress shadow areas and the interaction between fractures increase with decreasing multiple perforation cluster spacing in horizontal wells. Alternate fracturing can produce more fracture areas and improve the fracturing effect compared with those of sequential and simultaneous fracturing. The larger the temperature gradient between the fracturing fluid and rock matrix, the stronger the thermal diffusion effect, and the effect of thermal diffusion on the fracture propagation is significant.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the behaviours of the unstable dynamic propagation of 3D parallel hydraulic fractures induced by the interferences of adjacent perforation clusters and thermal diffusion. Further, the temperature field affects the fracture deflection requires could be investigated from the mechanisms; this paper is to study the unstable propagation of fractures in single horizontal well, which can provide a basis for fracture propagation and stress field disturbance in multiple horizontal wells.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose a measure for earned attention and a model and procedure for the maximization of earned attention by a company over a period of time.

Design/methodology/approach

Utility functions are used as the base of the earned attention measure. An evolutionary algorithm – a memetic algorithm – is applied to identify strategies that aim to maximize earned attention. Computational analysis is performed resorting to simulated data, and the memetic algorithm is assessed through the comparison with a standard steepest ascent heuristic.

Findings

The shape of the utility functions considered in the model has a huge impact on the characteristics of the best strategies, with actions focused on increasing a single variable being preferred in case of constant marginal utility, and more balanced strategies having a better performance in the case of decreasing marginal utility. The memetic algorithm is shown to have a much better performance that the steepest ascent procedure.

Originality/value

A new mathematical model for earned attention is proposed, and an approach that has few applications in business problems – a memetic algorithm – is tailored to the model and applied to identify solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

To achieve a high container handling efficiency at transshipment hub ports, there are a variety of scheduling problem as ship-to-berth assignment (BAP), container-to-yard arrangement (YAP), etc. As it is difficult to acquire the actual data of an existing terminal under various circumstances, this study aims to develop the time estimation model of container handling. Additionally, to achieve an efficient handling of containers at the yard, this study proposes the way to optimize the yard arrangement along with the berth allocation simultaneously by using estimated handling time.

Design/methodology/approach

To obtain the handling time based on various situations of the terminal operated, the discrete simulation model of container handling is constructed. The model to estimate the handling time of a quay crane assigned to a relevant ship by multiple regression analysis is developed. To find a feasible solution to minimize the total service time which includes YAP and BAP simultaneously, a genetic algorithm based on heuristics is developed.

Findings

The proposed regression model has high performance to estimate the time spent of container handling. In the total service time, the proposed approach outperformed the existing 2-step process approach.

Originality/value

As it is difficult to acquire the actual information of an existing marine terminal under various circumstances, the paper contains a regression model to estimate the container handling time based on simulation data, and the regression model is used in an optimization model to minimize the ship turnaround time.
