Abstract

Purpose

While the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend provides benefits for employees, it also poses security risks to organizations. This study explores whether and how employees decide to adopt BYOD practices when they encounter information security–related conflict.

Design/methodology/approach

Using survey data from 235 employees of Chinese enterprises and applying partial least squares based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), we test a series of hypotheses.

Findings

The results suggest that information security–related conflict elicits information security fatigue among employees. As their information security fatigue increases, employees become less likely to adopt BYOD practices. In addition, information security–related conflict has an indirect effect on employee's BYOD adoption through the full mediation of information security fatigue.

Practical implications

This study provides practical implications to adopt BYOD in the workplace through conflict management measures and emotion management strategies. Conflict management measures focused on the reducing of four facets of information security–related conflict, such as improve organization's privacy policies and help employees to build security habits. Emotion management strategies highlighted the solutions to reduce fatigue through easing conflict, such as involving employees in the development or update of information security policies to voice their demands of privacy and other rights.

Originality/value

Our study extends knowledge by focusing on the barriers to employees' BYOD adoption when considering information security in the workplace. Specifically, this study takes a conflict perspective and builds a multi-faceted construct of information security–related conflict. Our study also extends information security behavior research by revealing an emotion-based mediation effect, that of information security fatigue, to explore the mechanism underlying the influence of information security–related conflict on employee behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

A survey of the attitudes of students in eight countries towards the revelations of mass surveillance by the US’ NSA and the UK’s GCHQ has been described in an introductory paper and seven country-specific papers (The People’s Republic of China and Taiwan are combined in a single paper). This paper aims to present a comparison of the results from these countries and draws conclusions about the similarities and differences noted.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was deployed in Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, The People’s Republic of China, Spain, Sweden and Taiwan. The original survey was in English, translated into German, Japanese and Chinese for relevant countries. The survey consists of a combination of Likert scale, Yes/no and free-text responses. The results are quantitatively analysed using appropriate statistical tools and the qualitative answers are interpreted (including, where appropriate, consolidated into quantitative results).

Findings

There are significant differences between respondents in the countries surveyed with respect to their general privacy attitudes and their willingness to follow Snowden’s lead, even where they believe his actions served the public good.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to resource limitations, only university students were surveyed. In some countries (Germany and New Zealand), the relatively small number of respondents limits the ability to make meaningful statistical comparisons between respondents from those countries and from elsewhere on some issues.

Practical implications

Snowden’s actions are generally seen as laudable and having had positive results, among the respondents surveyed. Such results should give pause to governments seeking to expand mass surveillance by government entities.

Originality/value

There have been few surveys regarding attitudes to Snowden’s revelations, despite the significant press attention and political actions that have flowed from it. The context of attitudes to both the actions he revealed and the act of revelation itself is useful in constructing political and philosophical arguments about the balance between surveillance activity for state security and the privacy of individual citizens.

Abstract

Purpose

This study considered organizational politics as a source of stress and examined its spillover effects on the family domain. By integrating the work–home resource theory and transactional theory of stress, the authors developed a moderated mediation model that examined the moderating role of family support in the relationship between employee's perceptions of organizational politics and their family satisfaction through work-to-family conflict.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors examined the moderated mediation model using a sample of 223 full-time employees in Bangladesh. Data were collected using a three-wave survey research design.

Findings

The results indicate that organizational politics is negatively related to family satisfaction; work-to-family conflict medicates this relationship. Besides, family support attenuates the mediating effect of work-to-family conflict on the relationship between organizational politics and family satisfaction.

Practical implications

Managers should reduce the extent of organizational politics to avoid its impact on the nonwork domain. Moreover, social support from family members might play a crucial role in reducing the negative consequence of organizational politics in the family domain. By taking human resource practices such as training, increased communication, family-friendly policies, organizations may improve the ability of workers to cope with the negative consequences of organizational politics.

Originality/value

The current study uncovered the spillover effect of organizational politics on the nonwork domain. This research contributed to the burgeoning stream of organizational politics and work–family interface literature by investigating the influence of organizational politics in undermining family satisfaction and exploring the mediating mechanism linking organizational politics and family satisfaction as well as the boundary conditions of family social support.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact on employee voice from formal vs informal sources of procedural justice: group responsiveness and interactional justice, and to test how this impact may vary according to employees’ traditionality.

Design/methodology/approach

Dyadic data were collected from 261 employees and their supervisors. Results of the analyses offered support for the hypothesized moderated mediation model where group responsiveness and interactional justice would influence employee voice through enhanced organization-based self-esteem, and where such influence would be moderated by traditionality.

Findings

The findings showed that when there was a high level of group responsiveness, low traditionalists spoke up more, but when there was a high level of interactional justice, high traditionalists spoke up more.

Originality/value

By adopting the group engagement model, this study presented an alternative to the conventional perspective from uncertainty management theory about justice and voice, and tended to the neglect of fairness as an antecedent of voice by investigating how employees’ engagement in voice can be affected by their experience with different sources of procedural fairness information.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to build a link between narcissistic supervision and employees' change-oriented organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). On the basis of the social dynamics of state paranoia theory, the study examines the relationship between narcissistic supervision and employees' change-oriented OCBs, and explores how this relationship is mediated by psychological safety and affective organizational commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data collected from a sample of 183 employee–leader dyads from a technology company in China, the study examines the mediating effects of psychological safety and affective organizational commitment on the relationship between narcissistic supervision and employees' change-oriented OCBs. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data.

Findings

The results indicate that narcissistic supervision has a negative effect on psychological safety and affective organizational commitment; psychological safety mediates the relationship between narcissistic supervision and affective organizational commitment; and affective organizational commitment mediates the relationship between psychological safety and employees' change-oriented OCBs. The results also show that the negative effect of narcissistic supervision on employees' change-oriented OCBs is mediated by psychological safety and subsequently affective organizational commitment.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by linking narcissistic supervision and employees' change-oriented OCBs and suggesting that psychological safety and affective organizational commitment are two critical mediators of this relationship. This study not only advances research on the “dark side” of narcissistic supervision, but also sheds light on the underlying mechanism of narcissistic supervision and employees' change-oriented OCBs from the psychological and emotional perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the tribological performance of Cr3C2–NiCr–Mo–BaF2 composite sliding against a Si3N4 ball at high temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

A Cr3C2–NiCr composite and a Cr3C2–NiCr–Mo–BaF2 composite were prepared using spark plasma sintering. Tribological properties of the composites were investigated using a ball-on-disk type tribotester. The relationships among the microstructure, wear mechanism and tribological performance were determined by analyzing the wear track morphologies and the glaze layer’s phase composition.

Findings

The wear rate of the Cr3C2–NiCr–Mo–BaF2 composite was approximately one order of magnitude lower than that of the Cr3C2–NiCr composite from 700°C to 900°C when sliding against a Si3N4 ball. The favorable tribological performance of the Cr3C2–NiCr–Mo–BaF2 composite at high temperatures results from the synergistic lubrication of MoOx, BaF2 and BaMoO4.

Originality/value

This paper reports a new Cr3C2–NiCr matrix self-lubricating composite with better tribological properties than Cr3C2–NiCr composite at temperatures up to 900°C through Mo and BaF2 addition.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies concerning on the effect of reward on individual creativity have generated generally inconsistent conclusions. These ambiguities call for more studies to explore the potential boundary conditions under which reward may or may not promote creativity. The purpose of this paper is to clarify how pay for performance (PFP), a specific type of extrinsic reward awarded in field settings, impacts employees’ creative self-efficacy, and their creativity under varying levels of procedural justice as well as willingness to take risks.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a survey method to investigate nine enterprises in China. A total of 236 matched subordinate-supervisor questionnaires were returned (a 94.4 percent response rate). Because of missing data, the final usable sample comprised 213 subordinate-supervisor matched questionnaires.

Findings

The results suggest that for employees with low procedural justice perception or low willingness to take risks, PFP was negatively related to creative self-efficacy and creativity; where procedural justice or willingness to take risks was high, those relationships were positive. In addition, moderated path analysis revealed that when procedural justice or willingness to take risks was high, PFP had a positive indirect effect on creativity via creative self-efficacy, whereas when procedural justice or willingness to take risks was low, the indirect effects of PFP on creativity via creative self-efficacy were negative.

Research limitations/implications

The findings shed light on the process through which and the conditions under which PFP may promote creativity.

Practical implications

The findings have concrete implications for how to leverage PFP to enhance employee creativity through creative self-efficacy.

Originality/value

The results further underscore the need to rethink the simple reward-promotes (or hinders)-creativity model in order to think in more complex ways about how and under what conditions PFP might promote or inhibit creativity. Second, the results of this research better explain how PFP promotes or inhibits creative performance by pointing to the important mediating role of creative self-efficacy. Finally, the results indicated that social cognitive theory can be used as an overarching theory to clarify how and why reward can influence creativity. Thus, the research contributes to the current literature by developing a new theoretical perspective for exploring the relation of reward to creativity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the determinants of firm performance for Malaysian retailers.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was conducted to collect responses from members of the Malaysian Retailers' Chain Association. A total of 126 responses were obtained. Data analysis was done by using the PLS-SEM method.

Findings

The results of the study indicate that Retail 4.0 adoption is able to improve retailers' performance as-a-whole by improving the four perspectives of firm performance as given in the Balanced Scorecard, i.e. the finance perspective, the customer perspective, the internal processes' perspective and also learning and growth perspective. Further, enterprise risk management was found to have a positive moderating effect on retailers' performance as-a-whole and also on the finance and customer perspectives of performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study was conducted only in Malaysia and so, it might be geographically limited. Besides, it is cross-sectional in nature and therefore, the impact might be different if the study had been conducted over a longer period.

Practical implications

This study provides a useful framework for retailers who are seeking to improve firm performance.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies to show the impact of Retail 4.0 adoption on firm performance. Besides, this is also the first time, enterprise risk management has been introduced as a positive moderator on the impact of technology adoption on retailers' performance.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which financial privacy is present and necessary in dealings between banks and clients in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a comparative study drawing, in particular, on developments in the USA.

Findings

It is a trend in legislation in the western developed countries that the right to privacy is taken seriously and private information in the financial activities is protected by law. The legislation in the USA is typically systematic and complete. The fact that financial privacy protection is sparsely stipulated in finance or administrative laws but the protection of privacy has yet not been systematically written into law in China so far, which is inconsistent with the current situations of the financial industry. China should deal with the relationship between banks and clients, administrative power and personal rights, judicial interpretation and legislation from the aspect of financial practice, so as to set up the legal system to protect financial privacy by learning from the legislation in the USA based on the national conditions.

Originality/value

The paper provides a systematic view of the value of financial privacy in the modern world, with recommendations for reform in China.
