Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to describe how linked data technologies can change the digital library collections, what are the benefits of linked data applications in digital libraries and what are the challenges of digital libraries in linked data environment.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study is based on substantial literature review on the applications of linked data technologies in digital libraries. The search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Google Scholar were used to find the relevant literature for the study. Online databases such as Pro Quest, Science Direct, Emerald and JSTORE were also used to find the relevant literature of the study. Databases of Library Sciences Library and Information Science and Technology Abstracts and Library Information Science Abstracts were also used to find the relevant literature of the study. Library, linked data technologies, Semantic Web, digital library and digital collections were the main keywords which were used to find the relevant literature for the study.
Findings
The evolution of linked data technologies and Semantic Web has changed the traditional role of the libraries. Traditional libraries are converting into digital libraries and digital libraries are in a struggle to publish their resources on the Web using XML-based metadata standards. It has made capable the digital collections to be viewed by machines on the Web just like human. On the emergence of linked data applications in digital libraries, Web visibility of the libraries has been enhanced to provide the opportunities for the users to find their required quality information of libraries round-the-clock on the Web. National Library of France, National Library of Spain, Europeana, Digital Public Library of Americana, Library of Congress and The British Library have taken the initiatives to publish their resources on the Web using linked data technologies.
Originality/value
This study present several key issues for policy makers, software developers, decision makers and library administrators about linked data technologies and its implementations in digital libraries. The present study may play its role to facilitate the users of the Web who are enthusiastically interested to exploit the quality and authentic library resources on the Web round-the-clock. Search engines will also achieve their longstanding goal to exploit the quality resources of the libraries for their Web users to make their Web appearance more credible and trustworthy.

Design/methodology/approach
This paper explores linked data methodology, and the benefits of using linked data as a discovery mechanism. It briefly touches on the possibilities of using linked data within research.
Findings
It is important for libraries to build in mechanisms for exposing data that are being archived and preserved digitally. This will help libraries to participate in the semantic web both by enriching one's own data exposure mechanisms as linked data, and by providing means for patrons to take advantage of the growing volume of linked data available on the internet.
Originality/value
The paper explores the basic principles of using linked data, and compares and contrasts that with traditional web browsing using HTML pages. It also touches on the ways in which linked data can help researchers to gain access to data that would otherwise be hidden on the web, by tapping into semantic ontologies that link data in multifaceted ways.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this article is to analyze the trajectory of library linked data in light of the ideological machinations of late capitalism. This is accomplished in order to understand how and why its development currently occupies a place of contradiction and provide avenues for examining how this tension can be resolved.
Design/methodology/approach
Our approach relies on the work of Boltanski and Chiapello's “new spirit of capitalism” to understand the rise of the network and situate linked data within that history by examining various technologies, projects and agents involved in its development. We use this history to outline the growth of contradictory tensions within linked data necessitated by capitalistic growth.
Findings
Library linked data has found itself in a contradictory position because of the nature of late capitalist expansion, but this development has been facilitated largely by hegemonic agents within libraries and related institutions. We suggest that a counter-hegemonic lens be applied to envisioning linked data's future and its infrastructures.
Originality/value
To our knowledge this article represents one of the first attempts to provide a critique of late capitalist designs on linked data with a particular emphasis on hegemonic control over library technology and infrastructures.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify the concepts, component parts and relationships between vocabularies, linked data and knowledge graphs (KGs) from the perspectives of data and knowledge transitions.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses conceptual analysis methods. This study focuses on distinguishing concepts and analyzing composition and intercorrelations to explore data and knowledge transitions.
Findings
Vocabularies are the cornerstone for accurately building understanding of the meaning of data. Vocabularies provide for a data-sharing model and play an important role in supporting the semantic expression of linked data and defining the schema layer; they are also used for entity recognition, alignment and linkage for KGs. KGs, which consist of a schema layer and a data layer, are presented as cubes that organically combine vocabularies, linked data and big data.
Originality/value
This paper first describes the composition of vocabularies, linked data and KGs. More importantly, this paper innovatively analyzes and summarizes the interrelatedness of these factors, which comes from frequent interactions between data and knowledge. The three factors empower each other and can ultimately empower the Semantic Web.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the transfer of information from the building information modelling (BIM) models to either conventional or advanced asset management platforms using Linked Data. To achieve this aim, a process for generating Linked Data in the asset management context and its integration with BIM data is presented.
Design/methodology/approach
The research design employs a participatory action research (PAR) approach. The PAR approach utilized two qualitative data collection methods, namely; focus group and interviews to identify and evaluate the required standards for the mapping of different domains. Also prototyping which is an approach of Software Development Methodology is utilized to develop the ontologies and Linked Data.
Findings
The proposed process offers a comprehensive description of the required standards and classifications in construction domain, related vocabularies and object-oriented links to ensure the effective data integration between different domains. Also the proposed process demonstrates the different stages, tools, best practices and guidelines to develop Linked Data, armed with a comprehensive use case Linked Data generation about building assets that consume energy.
Originality/value
The Linked Data generation and publications in the domain of AECO is still in its infancy and it also needs methodological guidelines to support its evolution towards maturity in its processes and applications. This research concentrates on the Linked Data applications with BIM to link across domains where few studies have been conducted.

Purpose
Research in the area of technology‐enhanced learning (TEL) throughout the last decade has largely focused on sharing and reusing educational resources and data. This effort has led to a fragmented landscape of competing metadata schemas, or interface mechanisms. More recently, semantic technologies were taken into account to improve interoperability. The linked data approach has emerged as the de facto standard for sharing data on the web. To this end, it is obvious that the application of linked data principles offers a large potential to solve interoperability issues in the field of TEL. This paper aims to address this issue.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, approaches are surveyed that are aimed towards a vision of linked education, i.e. education which exploits educational web data. It particularly considers the exploitation of the wealth of already existing TEL data on the web by allowing its exposure as linked data and by taking into account automated enrichment and interlinking techniques to provide rich and well‐interlinked data for the educational domain.
Findings
So far web‐scale integration of educational resources is not facilitated, mainly due to the lack of take‐up of shared principles, datasets and schemas. However, linked data principles increasingly are recognized by the TEL community. The paper provides a structured assessment and classification of existing challenges and approaches, serving as potential guideline for researchers and practitioners in the field.
Originality/value
Being one of the first comprehensive surveys on the topic of linked data for education, the paper has the potential to become a widely recognized reference publication in the area.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate connected data through the use of open-source technology. It demonstrates the transformation process from library bibliographic data to linked data, which allows for easy searching across numerous collections of information.
Design/methodology/approach
In generating this file, a high-level operating system such as Ubuntu, which is based on the LAMP architecture, is used. It is required to use open-source strategies in building the relevant information. LODRefine is being used to convert all of Koha's bibliographic data into linked data that is now available on the Web. This framework has been conceptualized and formulated based on linked data principles and search algorithms accordingly.
Findings
Linked data services have been made publicly available to library users by using a variety of different forms of data. Information may be sought quickly and easily using this interface built on numerous search structures. Aside from that, it also meets the needs of users who use the linked data search mechanism to find information. Through modern scripts and algorithms, it is now possible for library users to easily search the linked data enables services.
Originality/value
This paper demonstrates how quickly and easily related data from bibliographic details may be developed and generated using a spreadsheet. The entire procedure culminates in the presence of specialists in the library setting. A further advantage of the SPARQL system is that it allows visitors to group distinct concepts and aspects using independent URIs and URLs instead of the SPARQL endpoint.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate ontologies with respect to the linked data principles. This paper presents a concrete interpretation of the four linked data principles applied to ontologies, along with an implementation that automatically detects violations of these principles and fixes them (semi-automatically). The implementation is applied to a number of state-of-the-art ontologies.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on a precise and detailed interpretation of the linked data principles in the context of ontologies (to become as reusable as possible), the authors propose a set of algorithms to assess ontologies according to the four linked data principles along with means to implement them using a Java/Jena framework. All ontology elements are extracted and examined taking into account particular cases, such as blank nodes and literals. The authors also provide propositions to fix some of the detected anomalies.
Findings
The experimental results are consistent with the proven quality of popular ontologies of the linked data cloud because these ontologies obtained good scores from the linked data validator tool.
Originality/value
The proposed approach and its implementation takes into account the assessment of the four linked data principles and propose means to correct the detected anomalies in the assessed data sets, whereas most LD validator tools focus on the evaluation of principle 2 (URI dereferenceability) and principle 3 (RDF validation); additionally, they do not tackle the issue of fixing detected errors.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to come to an understanding of the role of the Linked Data Librarian as well as to explain why this librarian requires significant skills and knowledge in the area of creating and working with legacy library metadata.
Design/methodology/approach
Typical job positions for cataloguing and metadata librarians from two different librarian job posting websites were monitored and examined over the course of nearly three months. The findings from the analysis were compared with a new job posting for a Linked Data Librarian to answer the question regarding whether or not the Linked Data Librarian is just a new type of cataloguer or if the job posting represents a new speciality within librarianship.
Findings
The analysis found that in the early days the position of Linked Data Librarian will appear to be very much like a cataloguer and linked data librarian. As linked data technologies become established in libraries and Bibliographic Framework is eventually implemented, the position will take on its full Linked Data leadership role.
Originality/value
Seeing as the Linked Data Librarian position is a new one, little analysis of it and how it fits into the cataloguing and metadata department as well as the library in general exists. This paper seeks to fill that gap.

In this paper the authors survey the current research works, tools and applications on publishing legacy data as linked data with the aspiration of conferring healthier understanding of the working domain of the linked data world.
Findings
Today, a vast amount of data are stored in various file formats other than RDF, which are called legacy data. In order to publish them as linked data they need to be extracted and converted into RDF or linked data without altering the original data schema or loss of information.
Originality/value
Most of the key issues have to be addressed. A more sophisticated approach to this technology is the linked data, which constructs the transformation of web of documents into the web of connected data possible.
